Sarah Palin Will No Longer Be Coming to a Town Near You

Real Clear Politics reports that former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin has ended her cross-country bus tour and returned to Alaska: 

Though Palin and her staff never announced a timeline for the remaining legs of her trip, aides had drafted preliminary itineraries that would have taken her through the Midwest and Southeast at some point this month. But those travel blueprints are now in limbo, RCP has learned, as Palin and her family have reverted to the friendly confines of summertime Alaska, where the skies are currently alight for over 19 hours a day and the Bristol Bay salmon fishing season is nearing its peak.

Palin's public opinion polls in Alaska were extremely high, in the >90% until an extensive smear campaign was started against her that drove her polls down into the >65% range. Would she have ever been recalled? Not if she had had the money to defend herself from bogus ethics violation charges. It was the family financial pressure caused by the bogus charges that lead her to resign. Her situation was nothing at all like that of Nixon other than the fact that they were both being smeared by the media which was cooperating with her detractors.

The other 49 states don't have to deal with the handicap that Alaska has to deal with, namely that most of Alaska's land is owned by either the Federal Government or by Indian Tribes. That makes it a PITA to try to get anything done. If the Federal Government were not crippling Alaska's ability to develop its own resources, balancing the Alaskan budget wouldn't be a problem.

If you were at all interested in finding out about her accomplishments, you would do some investigation on your own. Read her first book. Watch the bio movie which was recently released about her. Do a little googling. Its not hard to find articles about her that aren't just hit pieces filled with the kind of vapid criticisms which you yourself parrot. Here's one from the Weekly Standard. As always, to get a good picture, it is important to review many sources with many different ideological perspectives. Since you can't do anything more than make unsupported claims about her lack intelligence and post sophomoric psuedo-quotes in a patois that Palin does not speak in and which cannot be found outside internet forums and comedy sketches, it seems clear that your attitude towards Palin is based on willful ignorance rather than being informed and considered. Needless-to-say, your posts add very little to a blog like H&R which usually attracts people who have a modicum of skill at presenting well-reasoned arguments. You should probably consider either lurking and not posting on H&R or spending your time at blogs which attract a readership more given to monkey-poo flinging.

No, of course not. One of the many reasons that Latin American countries are poor is that mineral rights are usually owned by the State. The difference between Alaska and Venezuela is the difference between the US and Latin America - the proceeds from resource exploitation in Venezuela ends up mostly in the pockets of Latin American leaders and their cronies whereas the proceeds from resource exploitation in Alaska gets dispersed to Alaskan citizens, the Alaskan government and private businesses.

Your attempt to suggest that Palin is some kind of extortionist is just weird. Just what would you expect an Alaskan governor to do? Sell off Alaskan mineral rights to private entities thereby cutting Alaskan citizens out of the deal beyond a one time bump from the revenues from the sale? An Alaskan governor wouldn't even have the power to do such a thing given the amount of land owned by the Federal Government and the Indian tribes.

I'm not making an argument, merely presently the state of affairs that an Alaskan governor has to deal with. Palin didn't confiscate private mineral rights and redistribute them. She dealt with the reality of the situation in Alaska. Trying to criticize her for the collective ownership of Alaska's mineral rights is just absurd. Find something real to criticize Palin for.
