Reason.tv: Nick Gillespie & Matt Welch Preview "The Declaration of Independents"
At Reason Weekend 2011, held earlier this year in Laguna Niguel, California, Reason's Matt Welch and Nick Gillespie previewed their forthcoming book The Declaration of Independents: How Libertarian Politics Can Fix What's Wrong With America.
The book is a rollicking tour of how we got to be freer when it comes to personal identity, creative expression, the workplace, and more. And it's an operator's manual on how to create a liberatory politics for the 21st century.
"This is *the* up-to-date statement of libertarianism," says New York Times columnist, George Mason University economist, and Marginal Revolution blogger Tyler Cowen. "Not warmed-over right-wing politics, but real, true-blooded libertarianism in the sense of loving liberty and wanting to find a new path toward human flourishing."
"An enthusiastic, entertaining libertarian critique of American politics, brimming with derision for the status quo and optimism for the future and confident of the right direction." Kirkus Reviews

Very good - like Soros -- Capitalism, free trade, secularism, legal drugs, free movement of labor, liberty for all, legal euthanasia, property rights, etc.
Open Society / Liberty - what is not to love about it?
What does secularism have to do with libertarianism shriek? The rest of what you said all fit under liberty for all. Also, Soros is a mixed economy guy, not a capitalist.
You're fucking kidding me? What part of "free minds" confuses you?
Soros should be the on poster for Reason/Liberty.
Last I checked no one forced me to be Christian or Jewish or Muslim. I'm still an atheist. What part of "free minds" makes you think of secularism?
And Soros is 100% capitalist.
Capitalism is NOT = to absence of regulations like some idiots here think.
Shriek, if Soros was 100% Capitalist then he wouldn't support a Mixed Economy would he? Are you denying that Soros supports a Mixed Economy?
Do you know what a Mixed Economy is Shriek? It's some combination of private economic freedom and government regulation of markets. So it is to some degree Capitalist, and to some degree Socialist. 100% Capitalism is a free market, and 100% Socialism is a command economy.
All modern economies are mixed - idiot.
No one pines for a return to 1100 and the Dark Ages.
Indeed, I never said they weren't (although North Korea is almost assuredly a total command economy). That doesn't make the free market any less ideal.
The Dark Ages has nothing to do with the free market. Feudalism (a command economy) prevailed throught this time period. To say that a shift to a free market would put us in the Dark Ages is just as retarded as anything else you've said today, so I'm not surprised. Once again, you've failed to reply to anything I've said, so I'll just assume that I've convinced you.
"Declaration of Independents, name of the book - we have to 'ts', they have to 'ce'..."
You have the 'ce', too, Matt. Unless you're British. You're not a Redcoat, are you, Matt? One if by land, two if by sea, three if by PowerPoint Presentation?
Ending on the groundhog, though. Good call.
