Congrats to Matt Stone and Trey Parker's Book of Mormon, Which Won Big at the Tonys
Congrats to South Park's Matt Stone and Trey Parker, whose Book of Mormon (written with Robert Lopez of Avenue Q renown) was the big winner at last night's Tony Awards for Broadway:
At the top of the heap was "Mormon," which has taken Broadway by storm this season. It captured nine awards, including best musical, for its offensive yet good-natured look at two missionaries who arrive in Uganda and get way more than they bargained for, including gun-toting warlords, whole villages infected with HIV and a running gag about maggots in a man's scrotum.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of the Emmy Award-winning "South Park," collaborated with Robert Lopez, who co-wrote the Tony-winning "Avenue Q." Collecting the best musical prize, Parker said he'd be remiss if he didn't thank his late book co-writer — Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon church.
"You did it, Joseph! You got the Tony!" Parker said, looking skyward.
Reason's Kurt Loder and Ron Bailey reviewed the play here and here, respectively.
Stone and Parker gave a great interview to Reason in 2006. Read it here.
They remain that rarest of birds: Artists who are genuinely popular while also consistently challenging and extending their audiences. They are to popular culture what athletes such as Michael Jordan or Babe Ruth were to their sports.

Wow! They picked on the Mormons. When is the fatwa starting?

no

Geez, what a bunch of rubes.
You obviously did not watch. They're not just for gays anymore.

A musical number with Neal Patrick Harris is "Not for the gays anymore?"
Why, because you implicitly include the bi-curious as well?
And they're libertarians too.
To quote OhioUrine: opn thrd plz?
Which thread do we crap on for debate commentary?
Michelle Bachmann out does Palin with 5 babies and 21 foster children. Ron Paul counters FOUR THOUSAND BABIES DELIVERED!!!
Ron Paul...FOR THE CHILDRENZ!
HERE!
I'm good with this as our choice for jackin.'
I too wonder if RP threw that number in there to highlight the silliness of his opponents trying to one up each other with their loins.
Gary Johnson gets barred so Reason
takes their debate post and goes home.
NEW THREAD IS UP YOU MORONS.
I'm taking my talents to North Beach.
Watch as I start an internet rumor, but has anyone else besides me thought that Trey Parker might be a closet homosexual?
No.
Watch as I start an internet rumor, but has anyone else besides me thought that Trey Parker might be a closet homosexual?
And why the fuck did this post twice?!
We have no idea.
Not that I would spread rumors, but word on the street is that it is because your an attention seeking post whore.
The answer is still no.
Now I really want some Cheezy Poofs.
Fuck you, fat boy!
Wow, someone watched South Park in what, season one?
Now quick, say "beefcake!"
I'll make you eat your parents.
So Book of Mormon is the equal and opposite reaction to all of Season 15, eh?
We need an open thread on the mid-season, Landslide-laden tearjerker that kicked us all in the nuts last Wednesday.
A world without South Park's equal-opportunity mockery of both political parties is a world I'm not looking forward to.
Hey, you'll always have me!
If things do not change for the better, then it is best to put it down now before it becomes old and painful, dragging out to an embarrassing and undignified end.
I just want them to finish out their contract. I think two years will be enough time to sit and compose myself for the sad future that awaits me...watching The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, followed by the Colbert Report, followed by the John Oliver Midnight Leftist Cock Gobbling Fun Time.
I want them to walk away and scrub Season 15 from the list entirely. "Creme Fraiche" is not a bad note to go out on, unlike say...."Funnybot".
I liked "Royal Pudding". I'd rather them go forward and give us plenty of material that will last me the rest of my life (possibly another 60 years) then for them to cut it short right now.
True, but the last episode was up to South Park awesomeness standards.
heller - yes, it was. However, the end of the episode only makes sense in the context of the rest of Season 15's spectacular awfulness, so I figured it might not make sense in context.
Achtung - if you liked "Royal Pudding", I do not know if we are speaking a common language. Mackey's antics were funny (until terminal equine was beaten over and again - a trend this season), but the rest of it was ridiculous. The "ripping off the arm" "joke" at the end was something a sixth-grader could have written.
By the way, I'm very much convinced that kids' music today (1999-2011) is actually inferior to past generations' musics (Big Bang-1999).
I only need two words to disprove that, but I think three is better:
Fleetwood fucking Mac.
You could have chosen much better examples. Chicago, for one. KISS for another.
Hurumph -- obviously 'Only the Beginning' never got you laid.
You would not say that if you ever heard the Trojan Marching Band play "UCLA sucks".
i have no idea
Bye the way, if anyone is offended by this number, you isn't seen nothing yet. It is worth noting that the Mormon Church has made no protest whatsoever? and most Mormons who see the show report walking away utterly charmed by it.
