CATO Analysts: U.S. Out of Libya, Out of NATO…
Cato foreign policy analysts Chris Preble (pictured), Justin Logan, and Ben Friedman make a concise and convincing case that Europe doesn't really need the U.S. military around the way that it might have back in the day. They also point out that the U.S. military budget and mission is more plus-sized than William Howard Taft's bathtub, contributing to all sorts of screwups and snafus.

Why is it that I feel that, much like efforts to reform Social Security and Medicare, any effort to reform another obsolete 20th century bureaucracy like NATO will be met with wild, frantic hysteria?
Was the 20th century really that good?
Without the 20th century, we wouldn’t have Mel Brooks. So yes, it was that good.
It’s good to be the king.
I mean seriously, the only other time in American history that there was this much knee-jerk reaction to a proposed change in an American institution was…you guessed it…slavery.
Yeah, I went there!
…you guessed it, Frank Stallone.
Actually, the euro-weenies probably do need us to fight their wars, since their own military forces are so pathetic. However, that’s all the more reason we should abandon them: they’ve gotten soft, they’re ungrateful for our military’s contribution to their well-being, and they’ve gotten overly reliant on our foreign bases as a form of welfare spending writ large. Let those parasites build their own friggin’ militaries, fight their own friggin’ wars, and run their own friggin’ bases.
Gotta love how lefties deny the fact that the U.S. enabled Europeon socialism by protecting their asses from the Soviets for all those years and even in doing so Europeon socialism is still an epic fail. Let the Euroweenies defend and pay for their own defense instead of the American taxpayer.

NATO is the last thing keeping the Reds at bay. Make Europe pay their own way and you’re inviting Uncle Joe into the pantry. And they will be crushed under the weight of their own welfare states.
Perhaps the need to procure for their own basic defense might actually lead them to more sustainable economic policies (so that domestic lefties can stop blathering about the desireability of the butter spending) and actually force necessary and positive developments on the larger culture of Europe.

Nah it’s their pitching; Cincy is sixth best in batting average, but 5th from the bottom in ERA.
As the Dodgers ably proved this weekend.
Before posting, I was actually going to change Reds to Russkys or something to keep someone like you from making that joke, but thought, Who am I to deprive someone the chance to riff off my inane comments?
Dude, Red is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-Communist, please.
You fool! You raving Oriental idiot! There is a time and a place for everything, Cato! And this is it!
Yeash I would have to say that makes a lot of sense dude.

Since the purpose of NATO is to prevent the Soviet Union from sweeping all the way to the English Channel, for the life of me I can’t see why it should still be around at all.
One of the very first cuts to the defense budget in the name of budget balancing should be closing most of our overseas bases and bringing the troops home. I look forward to the spluttering from the militarists as they try to square the circle of “supporting the troops” while opposing bringing them home.
Since the purpose of NATO is to prevent the Soviet Union from sweeping all the way to the English Channel, for the life of me I can’t see why it should still be around at all.
Well, it was also intended to keep the Germans down, so there is that.
I don’t see the Soviet Union invading Europe, so you must be wrong.
“Since the purpose of NATO is to prevent the Soviet Union from sweeping all the way to the English Channel, for the life of me I can’t see why it should still be around at all.”
Because you just replace “Soviet Union” with “Islamo-fascist Caliphate” and ta da!
Yeah, disband NATO, and the damn Turks will be storming the gates of Vienna in no time.
The US needs to stay in NATO to pay for the new billion dollar plus headquarters they are building. How can we have Kinetic Military Action without a shinny new billion dollar glass headquarters building?
http://www.signonsandiego.com/…..3-billion/
Also Albania joined NATO in 2009, doesn’t everyone feel safer now that the mighty Albanian Army is pledged to come to the US’s aid in case of attack?
We should give NATO notice this year that we are pulling out of the treaty in 2020. That will give them plenty of time to adjust to our exit.
is good
