I never really got into Babylon 5. I’d like to give it another chance, but my library managed to lose the first episode, so I haven’t gotten around to it.
The first season is a complete wash, fairly painful to watch, but there a few episodes in there that provide backstory to the arc.
It picks up in the 2nd season and really gets going in the 3rd.
and the 5th just sucks because the creator thought the show was going to get cancelled after 4 so he rushed the end of the story arc. Then had to invent somethign new for season 5 which was bad. That in turn was onyl summed up with a tv movie.
The things that are cool about the show:
1. its one of the first shows to have a series long story arc rather than independent episodes.
2. they got the space physics correct
3. many of the aliens are the main characters – so its not a human vs them type of thing which I thought was interesting
Well, you need the last 6 or so episodes of the 5th to wrap things up. But yes, most of the 5th season is useless.
Speaking of B5, I saw that JMS wrote the Thor screenplay. I was surprised to see this after the movie, considering how absolutely mediocre it was. A real snore-fest story wise and it was fairly disjointed as well (not that a this is a surprise in and of itself for a major release for the summer season).
My son loved the movie, because, well, they blew shit up.
If I recall, it was when Bruce Boxleitner came in that it got measurably better.
Is that a phrase you’d ever expect to hear? I still have nightmares about The Scarecrow and Mrs. King.
You are correct.
The series creator, J. Michael Straczynski, started writing every episode sometime in the 3rd season IIRC, which dealt with the very spotty story quality. And yes, Boxleitner was an improvement.
The series definitely has smoking turds of episodes and desperately needed good directors, but the story arc and some of the major characters were enough to carry the show.
While Mr. Boxleitner was a very good actor, the character of Johnny Nuke’em wasn’t a very impressive military strategist.
That said, Vir’s story arc was probably the best. The Londo and G’Kar storyline was probably the most tragic thing you could put on TV.
Back on topic, I didn’t realize the Jerry Doyle show was so widely syndicated. I his book in a book store at Atlanta airport…I was a bit surprised to see his mug on the cover.
they got the space physics correct
You mean, nothing that was in a vacuum made a sound?
Yes, sound doesn’t carry in a vacuum and spaceships don’t bank in order to make a turn. B5 spaceships could rotate in directions independent of their forward motion.
Okay, maybe I’ll try again.
This is a good post. Thank you so much. Keep up the good works. Bothbest bamboo flooring bamboo plywood bamboo plywood, ???? gives you best support.
