Fox and Beck Break Up
Glenn Beck's Fox show is coming to an end. Here's an early reaction to the news from Daniel McCarthy:
Beck was attempting to break out of the conventional Republican mold set by Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. For a while, the puppet shows and conspiracy theories were amusing, but once the novelty wore off, Beck had no substance to fall back on. There's a market out there for something other than the conservative-movement mulch shoveled up by Hannity and Mark Levin, but it requires more depth than Beck is capable of.
Beck did try to break out of the mold, and if I had to choose I'd take him over Hannity any day. But he was too sloppy with his facts, and too prone to letting all those Discover the Networks-style conspiracy theories about the left distract him from the much more substantial foes of liberty in the center. Politics aside, his skills as a broadcaster are immense—he may be as important an innovator in TV as Limbaugh was in radio, sort of an Ernie Kovacs for the Cleon Skousen set. I'm sure he'll land on his feet.
Reasoners on Beck: Greg Beato, Nick Gillespie, Michael Moynihan, Tim Cavanaugh, and the gang.

No more sweaters and crying? How sad.
I know. It's like when The Cosby Show was cancelled.
Hah! Your youtube career is OVER young lady!
beck said "if u believe anything i say, ur an idiot". I ll take him at his word
says, "Ur [sic] an idiot regardless."
"too prone to letting all those Discover the Networks-style conspiracy theories about the left distract him from the much more substantial foes of liberty in the center"
---So when someone tells the truth about the left is a "conspiracy theory?" Beck often attacks the left using their own words, their own videos, their own books! Yet to the liberal media, if you scream "I am a communist" they hear "I am a moderate" or "I'm only kidding."
Jesus, what do we need to do to get libertarians to hate Obama and the left? You guys are really great hating the right, yet you always give the left a pass!
http://libertarians4freedom.bl.....ly-in.html
The fuck?
beck said what he said. deal w it
Beck is the unchallenged king of factless lying CT.
His CCX/Al Gore/Goldman Sachs/Fannie Mae all running carbon trading through the front of the tiny Obama bailout connected Shore Bank in Chicago was the most reality-detached piece of fantasy fiction since Tolkien.
And then attacking the capitalist/libertarian Soros for being a commie when Soros himself was fighting for democracy in the Ukraine and other parts of Eastern Europe - too much.
Anyone who takes Beck seriously cannot be taken seriously themself.
Yeah, why couldn't Beck have been as truthful and objective as that awesome Keith Olbermann?
Or the Madcow. And Larry O'Donnell and Ed Schultz, all of them noted paragons of truth dispensation and the finest examples of objectivity.
Hey you guys, stop giving the left a pass!
+1
so ur placing beck on their level?
Good question. The toxic fake-virtuous stance of false equivalence (otherwise known as "Republicans are better but it's uncool to say so!") means you have to treat Beck and Olbermann as equally bad with facts. I'm no fan of Olbermann but he and his MSNBC comrades do feel compelled to inhabit a factual universe, however much they may or may not scream about it.
Its inconceivable to these closet conservative commenters here that the top capitalists are also liberals.
"Well Goddamn! That Warren Buffett's a fukin commie!"
Warren Buffet is a commie who wants the rich to pay more taxes. Guess what, Buffet, YOU can CHOOSE to pay more taxes, the IRS form actually allows that. But commies like Buffet want to force everyone to pay more taxes.
Remember Shrike, Stalin and Lenin were rich, being a millionaire doesn't mean you can't be a communist.
You're a riot - the comments below are hilarious to those who haven't read them.
So, Stalin stealing and killing for his money is the same as Buffett working and investing for his?
OK - Beck taught you well.
Sugarhead - this guy is the new Reason mascot!
That's because we can distinguish between capitalism and corporatism, fool.
Tony likes Democrats. That's about it.
libertarian Soros
*spit take*
I assume he's using it in the half-tarded Chomsky sense.
But isn't Shrike full retard?
Half-tarded on Chomsky's part. There was a originally a non-free market, anti-property movement called "libertarianism", but that was before they stole "liberal" from supporters of individual rights.
Once you go full retard...
Capitalism, legal drugs, open borders, free trade, rationalism (free mind) - sounds like some Beck brainwashing has infected you two.
Reason has interviewed Soros and supported him.
Ohhh - he didn't like Bush! I forget how many Bush supporters are here.
Yup. I'm a HUGE GWB fan. Ask anybody.
You do have a GWB Fleshlight. How much of a bigger fan can you be?
You made me laugh and vomit at the same time.
Mmmm... squelchy...
What is your problem with Soros?
What part of Capitalism, legal drugs, open borders, free trade, rationalism (free mind) do you not like?
$13 billion isn't a bad merit badge either.
You can oppose Bush with out giving millions to the Democratic Party.
So you are a Republican. Unless you condemn the Kochs for their GOP donations as well.
shrike, you won't know shit if you were up to your neck in it.
Everyone always wants to say libertarians only see things in black and white, but partisan little dumbasses like you are the ones trapped in the binary.
You disparage Soros simply because he donated to Dems - and you call me a partisan?
I don't disparage or lie about the Kochs - I don't care about their donations.
You are the true partisan hack - pinned and classified.
Hilarious. Keep digging, shrike... I'm sure there's a pony in there somewhere.
So you are a Republican. Unless you condemn the Kochs for their GOP donations as well.
Can I condemn the Kochs for giving $75,000 to New York's Democrat Governor?
Sorts himself has affirmed that he is a supporter of a "mixed economy" i.e. not a libertarian
As long as you're allowed to pick up that merit badge by intentionally collapsing currencies, after taking a short position.
""You do have a GWB Fleshlight""
What??? How is it a GWB Fleshlight? Does it rattle off GWB quotes when you pump it?
I'd pay ten grand to suck Bush's cock. Ten Grand.
Well, Libertarian Today disagrees, and no, it's not my blog.
http://www.libertariantoday.co.....ctors.html
Well, shit, if Libertardian Today says so, then The Science Is Settled?
I forget how many Bush supporters are here.
He did cut taxes.
Soros is not a capitalist or a libertarian, Jesus, where do you get your information? Soros is a SOCIALIST, he wants to spread the wealth! He wants to redefine capitalism which is the PC way of saying "I'm a socialist."
Soros doesn't give a fuck about democracy, he funds evil progressive organizations like MediaMatters and MoveOn to defame Beck and Fox. He sues people for "defamation," as if!
Yep - a true Beckerhead. Don't worry - he will always be there on Youtube when you get lonely.
There is not a shred of evidence Soros is a socialist.
u mean soros believes in socialism for people instead of just for corporations. some big eevil there yessirree
Soros isn't a socialist, Smith is brainwashed by the Beckerhead and the Fox News liars.
Read what Discover the Networks has to say about the evil one, George Soros.
http://www.discoverthenetworks.....?indid=977
No, I won't read more Beck shit and spin.
I want a quote from Soros where he supports socialism. He has written 8-10 books so it should be easy.
Of course you won't find one.
He does criticize market fundamentalism but so did Adam Smith.
Admit it - Beck has you under his armpit.
I want a quote from Soros where he supports socialism.
"I support Socialism."
- Soros
Although I oppose corporate welfare, if I had to choose between giving some lazy ass welfare and giving a corporation a two year tax break so they build a plant here, I think I'd rather support the corporation.
The reality is that cities compete for companies just like people compete for jobs. It's supply and demand. People like George Soros want all the states to have unions and anti-business law so the entire USA looks like the state of Michigan. God help us all if that happens.
And the corporations don't give a shit what the states look like as long as they get the cheapest labor and biggest welfare checks--and states are lining up to provide them. It's called a race to the bottom--something very real and very enabled by the fact that corporations are rewarded for not having any loyalty to the US or their local community. Are you OK with a market for jobs when you have to compete with two billion starving Asian people?
Yes, but COUNTRIES have the power to say "you want to sell cars in my country, build a plant here." That's why the Japs got smart and started building cars in America while the so-called "American" car companies got dumb and started producing them in Canada, Mexico and China. Yet who got the bailout? GM and their asshole friends.
Troll-off! Too bad reasonable doesn't work on my iPod. (It's very sure to correct the capitalization on that.)
How are none of you completely blown away by the fact that three of H&R's biggest trolls are engaging one another in a bitch slap cage match? Has this happened before? I feel like I'm witness to an evolutionary epoch.
the capitalist/libertarian Soros
HA! See, up until now, I thought you were just some idiot lefty turdburgler who actually believed the nonsensical bullshit you posted. But with this, you've overreached and in doing so, you've tipped your hand. The mask has slipped - you're really just a highly talented troll. I mean, really, this is just too much. Not even the most idiotic, deluded progressive (but I repeat myself) could truly believe Soros genuinely is libertarian.
I mean, really, right? Right guys? Guys?? ....
His CCX/Al Gore/Goldman Sachs/Fannie Mae all running carbon trading through the front of the tiny Obama bailout connected Shore Bank in Chicago was the most reality-detached piece of fantasy fiction since Tolkien.
Following shrike's portrait of Beck's crazy conspiracy theories about Obama will be Shrike's own crazy conspiracy theories about Koch.
If we are lucky we might be able to see shrike blame Bush for Japan's recent earthquakes.
You guys are really great hating the right, yet you always give the left a pass!
Only the Tonys actually give the left a pass on anything around here.
Jesus, what do we need to do to get libertarians to hate Obama and the left? You guys are really great hating the right, yet you always give the left a pass!
But Beck is liked by yucky people.
And the most important thing for Faux-Libertarians at Reason is to fit in with their cool socialist media friends.
Good point, Josh. You're a real libertarian.
Good point, Josh. You're a real libertarian.
First i feel sorry for Josh...having Smith call you a real libertarian can never be a good thing.
Second: I am the arbiter of who is and who is not a libertarian!!! My power to is absolute* and you have no business saying who and who is not a libertarian!!
*URKOBOLD does have a legal limited license granted by me that allows him to finger 12 libertarians a year.
But where to the true Scotsmen fit in with the socialist media friends?
Right under the kilt!
So when someone tells the truth about the left is a "conspiracy theory?
I guess you missed the "chalk board" episodes.
Soyyyyy en perdador.
I'm a loser baby.
So why don't you kill me?
Lather, rinse, repeat.
"Get crazy with the cheese whiz!"
...and make alll the women scream...
all right!
turn it up now! well
all right!
turn it up now!
"Pistols are pointing at a poor man's pockets...smiling eyes rippin' outta their sockets."
"Gotta Soros haircut, on my head...Gotta Fox News Broadcast, 'bout to be dead."
To quote the pictured album:
"Well there ain't nobody left to impress..."
I hope Beck takes a cyanide breath mint cause I hear they got plastic in the afterlife and blood on the futon.
Thank goodness for da' Judge!
When will Alex Jones get his own show? He has depth in spades.
I bet Woodrow Wilson is behind this.
I blame Bush
I second that! Not that I'll do anything to change the situation...
No, it was Soros or the Tides Foundation.
Let me tell you, if he had me as a co-host we'd have the greatest show you will ever witness in the history of television. Except for my Apprentice shows.
*chases after Trump holding microphone*
Mr. President! Mr. President...any further comment! Mr. President!
You're dead to me after firing the gay reality show "celebrity" for being a bad painter.
I must say I don't agree with putting Hannity and Levin in the same class. Levin, love him or hate him and his high nasal whine, is very intelligent and knowledgeable. Hannity is by far the dumbest of all the right wing radio guys.
Beck was in a class by himself -- certifiably nuts, but sometimes interesting.
I concur with your assessments of each of them. Hannity has become unlistenable to me - he comes on, off goes my radio/TV like a trap just snapped shut.
Beck - not quite as nuts on the radio (for whatever reason), so I can take him in small doses.
Levin - too bad he cuts people off and yells so much, b/c he's by far the most knowledgable of the three. But I can't listen to him any more, either - just irritating.
Actually, he grows on you. It may not be the messenger that is irritating, but the fact it seems that people just either are incapable of grasping the message or willfully rejecting it and embracing their inner entitlement mentality. I listen to Levin as much as I can. Roger Hedgecock, Alan Colmes, and Jerry Doyle as well. Oh, Kudlow too.
I don't know the dust up between Tom Woods and Mark Levin leaves me with the impression that Levin is a dolt.
He's not a dolt. Just so in love with warfare that he has a mile wide blind spot about anything related to it.
I agree Hannity is an idiot. I can't take Beck though, or his radio co-host. They just annoy the hell out of me. I can't listen to his show more than 5 minutes.
Does anyone else ever listen to Jason Lewis? I don't know how widely he's sydicated, but his show is on a new FM talk station we just got here. I've listened a few times, and he seems to be more libertarian than all the usual suspects.
"All those Discover the Networks-style conspiracy theories" were his weepy tent-revival show's only virtue. Dramatic listing is good TV. Success-N-Life isn't. That's why it's on BET at sunrise.
Damn, that was one of the funniest shows on television. Maybe Comedy Central will pick it up? It could take one of Daniel Tosh's fifty time slots there.
They should bump Colbert and put it on right after The Daily Show.
Don't go taking Tosh off anything. He can have one of those spots with repeats of Scrubs (never seen that show).
Beck, a musical genius. One of the most talented artists of the past 25 years. Glenn Beck, not so much. However, his ability to get thoughtless Team Red drones to actually think about Republican hypocrisy and the corrupt two party system should not be underestimated. In the end he has helped the cause of liberty and libertarianism.
Finally someone gives credit where credit is due. Although I disagree with the term "Team Red drones" specially since you don't refer to the Mulatto Lovers, ooops, Obama-Lovers, as drones.
What's the "Mulatto Lovers" comment mean? Is it because Obama's mother was white and that bothers you?
Ignore him. He's either a brain-dead crypto-Republican or he plays one for the purposes of trolling.
Well, they do love him for being Mulatto or black, which is racist in my opinion. Ask Geraldine Ferraro, she told the truth about Obama, said that if Barry had been white he woudn't be as popular and she was vilified for that comment. So, I take pride in calling him the Marxist Mulatto. I do unto Democrats what Democrats did unto Republicans. I spread the hate, you know. ;0
Wow, you're a true GOPer and Becktard - bet you love that teabagger shit too.
This your boy, Sugarhead! He is why I hate the modern GOP!
He's probably your alt.
See, you use the word "teabagger" yet nobody calls you racist or any derogatory words for it. So, I'll use the word Mulatto, which is not a racist word unless some progressive like you decides it's racist. For the record, I hate Obama for being a RED, not a black, or half-black, ugly ass negro. Again, "negro" is used by the United Negro League and by old blacks.
If you can't figure out how not to sound like a racist, then you don't get to take umbrage at being called a teabagger.
Look up the history of words before you declare what they are or aren't. Mulatto can very much so be construed as racist because of it's etymology. There is some disagreement, but many scholars believe that the origin of the word is from the Spanish / Portugese word for "mule". Mules were widely used in Iberia at the time as beasts of burden, the implication being that mulattos were no better than mules.
Perhaps he's commenting on the fact that you chose to mention it as indicating that you consider it significant, which would be racist? Do you typically identify white politicians by their race when disparaging them?
The insistence embedded in the name of your blog is hilarious in the way that totalitarian regimes the world over relentlessly insist they are "democratic" and "republics".
Sorry, but this country is knee deep in Team Red junkie morons. When the Republican establishment actually calls for an end to The Patriot Act, the Drug War, discrimination against homosexuals, military adventurism, etc... all of which are Unconstitutional yet backed by the self proclaimed "Constitution Party", then maybe we will be getting somewhere.
As for Team Blue, these fuckers went full retard. There seems to be no inner organized resistance to the corruption and absolutely no semblance of rational thought. Socialism will fuck your brain up way worse than crack, and it's apparent Team Blue has over indulged in both.
Please, homosexuals are a pain in the ass, no pun intended. When they're not having sex in public parks they're making wedding pans. Besides, if I have to choose between same-sex marriage and a tax break, I'll take the tax break and vote for a "homophobe." Seriously, why do we even need government marriage? Let the people get power of attorney's, let individual sponsor individuals for greencard, get the government out of the marriage business and be done with it.
""Seriously, why do we even need government marriage?""
So she can take you to the cleaners in the divorce, Geeeezzzz.
"" get the government out of the marriage business and be done with it.""
That would include laws that defines who can marry.
I thought he was fairly entertaining until he got all religious and stuff.
Then he became a bore.
Ever listen to Beck's radio show years ago before anyone had ever heard of him? Hilarious and fun and occasionally edifying. Then he started taking himself seriously...
Bring back moron trivia!
Ever listen to Beck's radio show years ago before anyone had ever heard of him?
Yes, I somehow stumbled across it one day while working in my garage/workshop, back in about 2003. He was hilarious. Then a few socio-political issues caught his attention and he started doing more and more of that stuff. Then he got the CNN show, then Fox and now he does tend to go off on a rant too often.
I still sometimes listen to the radio show, and he still can be pretty funny sometimes, but he's become a little too apocolyptic sometimes. I think I watched his Fox show once, just to see what it was like. I watch very little TV anyhow, so other than that, I've never seen his show.
I completely agree. I stopped listening for awhile, and soon everyone was talking about how crazy he is. I was like, "no way, that guy's hillarious!"
I want the old Beck back.
He was much better back in the early '00's when his show was local here in the Tampa Bay area.
The funny thing is I thought this sub-thread was referring to the musician Beck and his re-discovery of Scientology. Take out the part about having a radio show and later a TV show and it's actually fairly accurate.
I for one will miss Beck. I see him every day, because for some reason, my DVR always catches the tail end of his show just before recording Redeye. What will be the lead in to the show now? And what will Bill Schulz say is the greatest evil now that the name of Woodrow Wilson will be disappeared from FOXNews.
Greggy and shrike. Two sides of a very dumb coin.
The joke's on you! The coin is really a penny slug.
DOH!!!
Shouldn't it be a Treasury note? Coins have some intrinsic value.
FIAT MONIES!
You betcha - a spyder will be in the shop from day 1.
Oh C'mon! You know I am 100x smarter than that bozo.
Regain some respect here and admit it. I don't remember arguing with you before anyway.
I normally ignore idiots. For good reason it seems.
Oh C'mon! You know I am 100x smarter than that bozo.
ummmmm....
No you are not.
Also i am missing your "chistfag" screeds.
You should totally bring that back.
Hey, at least I have the right ideas while he's a Soros-lover.
Greggy and shrike. Two sides of a very dumb coin.
What is odd is they are both libertarianish...or at least they claim to be.
I wonder which issues they agree upon.
Shrike and Smith do you think pot should be legalized?
Ah Beck - In the times of the chimpanzees he was a monkey, so there really is no room for him on the air.
Wait... That's Fox on the cover of "One Foot in the Grave"? I always thought that was Calvin Johnson.
"Beck did try to break out of the mold, and if I had to choose I'd take him over Hannity any day."
I agree with that, but I agree with this more:
"There's a market out there for something other than the conservative-movement mulch shoveled up by Hannity and Mark Levin, but it requires more depth than Beck is capable of."
Let's hope they replace Beck with someone who wants to break out of the conservative mold AND cares about intellectual integrity and factual accuracy.
"someone who wants to break out of the conservative mold"
Doubt it. Doesn't fit the GO TEAM RED mentality of the FOX Network (not to be confused with FOX Business).
Re: Fiscal Meth,
Da Judge!!!!
And Stossel.
I would love to see the Judge get more exposure, but I would to screw with the FBN dynamic. Besides, one can hope that each person watching the Judge means one less person tuning into O'Reilly.
Judge and Stossel are both fantastic but they're on Fox Business. I'm holding out hope that the Koch-dealers really do control everything and put a libertarian on Fox News Channel at the 5 slot.
Vit vaz me swoo vot heem off zee ayer!
What will John Stewart talk about now?
I don't listen to that clown, he laughs at his own jokes! What kind of comedian does that? And his audience, all they do is yell like they're on Jerry Springer. Jesus F. Christ, drives me nuts.
Excuse me, but my middle initial is "H".
Harold? Horatio?
Hebrew? Too obvious?
Herbert? Hector? Henry?
Herschal? Hiam? Hillel?
Jesus H Christ is like Harry S Truman...
It's Hussein.
+all points ever
T thought it was "F"?
Ugh, I don't have the stomach to go to nutroot hangouts like Daily Kos, but I'm guessing they are celebrating over there like its North Vietnam in 1975.
Moscow 1945
I didn't go for the religion stuff or the paranoid conspiracy theories, but Beck was at least entertaining to watch. And I can give him credit for being less blindly pro-Republican and pro-warfare than the rest of the Fox crowd.
Here Come Da Judge!!
Re: Flip Wilson
May Fox see the light, listen to you and (finally!) bring Da Judge.
Sigh. I only wish that Reason Magazine was anywhere near as relevant as Beck is. He got more accomplished on behalf of American society from his little cable program in two years than Reason has in over forty.
drink?
whoa...i just read a complete thread of sockpuppets and trolls...jeebus, i think my browser broke.
"sort of an Ernie Kovacs for the Cleon Skousen set"
I think Ernie Kovacs ghost gets to skull fuck Jesse for making that comment - what exactly is he innovating on that Father Coughlin didn't come up with 80 years ago?
Coughlin was a radio broadcaster, and my comment was explicitly about TV. Though for the record, Beck's radio style doesn't have much in common with Coughlin's. Have you ever heard a Coughlin broadcast?
Beck's radio show is much better then his TV show.
Mostly because he has 2 other guys on with him who often call him on his shit and openly disagree with him.
For about the past twenty months, every time I would flip past Fox with Beck on he seemed to be ranting about muslims. Shit like that gets old quick.
I always saw the guy as more of a huckster than anything else.
Reading Mr. "rich people are socialists so that makes socialism good" (Shrike) debate Gregory "Mulatto-Lovers" Smith is a little too much like "Two Girls One Cup" for my taste
Best comparison possible.
+100
Except that it's not the girls, it's the contents of the cup.
Politics aside... An important innovator? An immense broadcaster? He started out as a shitty morning zoo type radio show, then became a shitty political and conspiracy talk show. His TV shows were just a rehashing of his radio show. He wasn't the first person to take a radio show and turn it into a TV show, Larry King, Howard Stern, etc.
That one sentence should read: He started out as a shitty morning zoo type radio show host, then became a shitty political and conspiracy talk show host.
I'm going to miss Beck. Many people who criticize him have never really watched his show. His facts don't always check out, but when you have hundreds of hours of air time, I don't blame him for being sloppy. Unlike other TV personalities, though, he encourages his audience to look it up for themselves and not just take him at his word(another quote taken out of context). Like it or not, he's been right quite often. He talks about the things that no one else sees.
I'm excited about the change, though. He's going to do specials instead, like Stossel does. This will allow him to put more effort into less air time, and present more complete pieces.
The good news is syndicators do not want him.
http://www.broadcastingcable.c.....Talker.php
"We'll air Springer and Wendy Williams, but we have to draw a line somewhere..."
Beck's ratings dried up for one reason: The Republicans won. People who feel helpless and without empowerment (i.e. conservatives pre-2010) always turn to the most radical versions of themselves (i.e Beck) until they regain their power. It's a defense mechanism. It gives the Right the illusion of control.
Now that Republicans rule Congress, conservatives don't need their Beckian security blanket --- blankets which always end up in dusty attics.
People who feel helpless and without empowerment (i.e. conservatives pre-2010) always turn to the most radical versions of themselves.
If he is the most radical does that mean republicans no longer care about gay marriage?
By the way Rand Paul is far more radical in terms of policy then Beck is.
PLEASE don't compare Glen Beck to Ernie Kovacs!! The all time genius of early television, a television pioneer, to GLEN BECK! Come on now.
