Looters and Leviathan: Hobbes Turned Upside Down
John Robb reacts to the looting in Egypt:
There have been a growing number of reports of looters/thugs conducting smash and grabs across Cairo. Interestingly, there's also a growing number of reports that when these thugs are caught, they have police/interior ministry identification on them. If this is so, the reasons for it are:
1. It tars the insurgency as a group of criminals and thugs.
2. It provides a reason for a reluctant army to get involved and enact a curfew.
3. It forces a percentage of the movement to stay at home (to guard the neighborhood).
This above has the potential to set the stage for a harsh response domestically. It could also help provide cover to the regime globally (hitting the Egyptian Museum was smart in this respect, given how many people around the world care much more for the artifacts there than the freedom of 80 m Egyptians).
The question is: will it work? A decade ago, certainly. Today? No way. Too much backchannel.
How much of the looting is bona fide grassroots rioting and how much is false-flag activity by the cops? I don't know, and neither do you; in general, whenever you hear the word "looter" on the news, it'll probably be days or more before you can speak with any certainty about what has actually been going on. But government agents are clearly involved with the spree, and it's very possible that they're stoking and spearheading it; defense of person and property, meanwhile, has fallen not just on the Army but on civil society, as neighbors form informal protective associations. If Robb's scenario turns out to be true, Egypt has inverted the Hobbesian story of the state: The police are spreading disorder and the voluntary sector is containing it.

I told you the police are there to preserve disorder.
"Pull out the fucking tampon and tell me what you want to say." & "Get the fuck out of my chair you fucking retard." - Mayor Emanuel
Government employees need big screen televisions, too, you know.
Agreed. The cops stealing after Katrina were doing it on their own account.
And its very likely that some number of the incidents are just like Katrina; local cops trying to get a piece. Its also very likely that some of the incidents are centrally directed. There's really no way to know for sure right now.
The accusations of looting, of suspected regime involvement in the looting, and even of looting the museum, should all be familiar from Iraq. Of course, since people have different priors, many will react differently to these reports than to the ones from Iraq in a similar situation.
Speaking of Iraq. The Iraqi government is making arrangements to bring its citizens from Egypt back to the relative safety of Iraq.
One thing in support of this. The protesters were setting up a human wall to protect the Cairo Museum, while the police/security forces weren't doing a thing to protect them. Also, there are reports that the prisons have been abandoned and thousands of criminals have escapes from nearby prisons. As a result, people are afraid to be on the streets. Even if the looters aren't all police or security forces, the police appear to be complicit.
If Mubarak retains power, and the US (read: Obama admin) continues to support him after this, I really want to hear how the left spins that Hope & Change?.
Hey, you do what you have to do to protect the country from tea partiers, er, I mean anti-government protesters.
Reed partiers?
You won't hear anything; it will all be ignored. Intellectual consistency doesn't exist for partisans.
My administration will continue to support the situation.
yup
That's about right.
You won't hear anything; it will all be ignored. Intellectual consistency doesn't exist for partisans.
Seen any anti-war rallies lately? Me neither.
IT"S OK WHEN WE DO IT!
Half of 0 is still 0.
The State, at it's heart, is violence, so it's unsurprising that those who serve as its enforcers should turn out to be, at heart, petty thugs.
Whaaaaaat? A buncha otherwise useless thugs with badges, official state sanction, and guns acting badly? Naaaaaaaah.
That would NEVER happen here! Oh, wait. . .
4. The cops are depraved worthless shitheads that aren't experts in anything except douchbagary.
#4. [Alternate] Egyptian police and security forces see this as an opportunity to enrich themselves via smash-and-grabs.
IIRC, the same thing happened with the NOPD in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Interestingly, there have been little to no reports of looting from the mainstream british media, at least as far as I've seen. Where are you getting this from? is it information put out by people on the ground?
http://english.aljazeera.net/n.....59936.html
That article says nothing about police or government employees looting...
There was an AP report published in the Hindu (http://www.thehindu.com). The Indian press should be a good source. It has plenty of English newspapers, freedom of the press, and no guilt complex.
By the way, that report in The Hindu also said that Mubarak kicked al-Jazeera out of Cairo.
defense of person and property, meanwhile, has fallen not just on the Army but on civil society, as neighbors form informal protective associations.
Or, as the preternaturally vapid Alex Witt, on MSNBC, said, "VIGILANTE MOBS."
And, of course, the Egyptian Teabagger mobs have emptied the prisons, and the streets are filled with terrorists.
And to think Sarah Palin was almost a heartbeat away from the Presidency.
Even more depressing: with Obama we got a VP who says that Mubarak is not a dictator and should stay in power.
the nile ain't just a peninsula in the black sea.
Thanks to the Muslim Brotherhood, no less it seems.
The chanting seems exceptionally loud on al Jazeera right now.
The question is: will it work? A decade ago, certainly. Today? No way. Too much backchannel.
Goddammit....
It was supposed to have this also...
"Why not? It worked in Thailand during the last riots, which were only a year ago."
I saw the vandalism done by anti-Globalization protesters when I was in college, so I can believe that the protests turned into riots. It's also believable that the police are rioting. We'll see how things progress.
Mr. Robb forgot scenario #4: The Lakers won another NBA Championship.
Wrong city? My bad.
Some of those early pictures reminded me of that.
Have you seen the DirecTV ad where the superhero is on his couch watching TV while the city is destroyed by rioters and looters?
Every time I see that, I think: LA after a Lakers championship or Detroit on a Thursday.
Shit, you are a bunch of pikers.
A bunch of toothless goons fighting another bunch of toothless goons is not a riot. It's Darwinism at work.
Or Pittsburgh next Sunday, probably.
I'm glad to see you have faith in the Steelers winning, but there won't be any riots if and when it happens. Didn't have them the first six times. Not gonna have 'em now. It's just not something we do.
Montreal after losing a Stanley Cup final.
Only in frogland. Every other Canadian city's riots are easily stopped when the people involved find a beer store and/or a bong.
Good point. Canadiens fans make Raiders fans look classy and rational.
I think the Richard Riot would be more appropriate.
I saw something like the Richard Riot happen at a Vancouver Canucks game once. The referee made a questionable call and three fans booed loudly. Nervous glances were exchanged throughout the stadium.
Yeah, they can't all be as classy as Todd Bertuzzi.
I didn't see that sucker punch coming...
There's no right to loot! The police and the military needs to shoot them down! I support the rights of LAW-ABIDING individuals, but when your become a looter you have no rights, it's insane to care about you and worry about your safety.
The military needs to shoot the police down, you mean?
"but when your become a looter you have no rights"
lol. Right. Once you grab a TV, all that due process shit goes out the window. TVs are important! There's certainly no way that attitude would empower thugs and tyrants.
And of course, once you get accused of looting, there's no way you're innocent, so you should be executed on the spot with no trial, right?
Thanks for providing our authoritarian fetishist comment for the day; Tulpa seems too busy to have done it.
you should be executed on the spot with no trial, right?
If you're carrying my property, absolutely!
SIV has my phone in his hand! Kill him!
Why don't you try it yourself?
The property owners should shoot the looters.
Good news for him: Brad Nowell is already dead, so he can save his bullets.
And of course, once you get accused of looting, there's no way you're innocent, so you should be executed on the spot with no trial, right?
As an anarchist, I would have thought that you would approve of such a course of action. After all, a justice system and its surrounding philosophical support systems (like "due process" and "innocent until proven guilty") is the apparatus of the State. Shooting looters is just a grassroots "market" approach to justice.
Episiarch is a statist anarchist.
Not really.
These ideas have their roots in ancient philosophy and moral discussions independent of the state.
Unless you think that the whole groundwork of natural rights is just a statist conspiracy or something. At which point, nice to meet you potential meat sack, cause you are no better then any other animal without any kind of rights structure.
The State, in a state of nature, is one of barbarism...
Right, Hobbes had it upside down to begin with.
A Tunisian friend emailed this to me during their crackdown and overthrow:
"Remember our discussions about the [U.S.] second amendment? Well, you were right. It's been some years I've been thinking [about] that now, but today, that's something I wish Tunisians had."
I saw a tweet that someone was passing out baseball bats to the volunteer citizen patrols. Baseball bats, yet the lamestream media keeps focusing on the "made in America" tear gas cannisters. America doesn't just export oppression.
Baseball bats? In Egypt? I would have thought as a former British colony, they'd be cricket bats.
It's a tweet. It could be Quiddich brooms and you still wouldn't know if the tweeter was an idiot or not.
Whoever it is, they tweeted.
The evidence already fails to lean in the "not" direction.
Louisville Slugger exports tens of thousand of baseball bats to countries where no one plays baseball. They're much better impact weapons than other sports' cudgels.
A croquet mallet would probably be pretty useful too. But none of these can compare to the lethal menace that is lawn darts.
I prefer a good pitching wedge.
I made more with that swing that he ever made in a tournament
Yipee! Conk a few heads, and I come a knockin'!
Most astute comment to date -
yeah, if only Hosni had listened to Barack and invested in high speed rail, that woulda saved his arse. . .
Just so you're all prepared, unless Egypt is burning to the ground tomorrow or someone goes on a FourLoko fueled rampage, prepare for a fresh new round of Mosquerbating tomorrow on H&R.
Apparently, the new imam running the show is a little more aligned with the jackasses protesting him when it comes to teh gaiz. Converts from the religion of peace...not so much for those guys.

If your doorbell rang, and there was a foaming, frothing, snarling, completely rabid and insane dog on your doorstep waiting to come in - would you let it in? No, you'd pull out your licenced/registered Glock, splatter it's brains all over your front lawn, and be back in front of the TV before half-time is over.
WHY are we even entertaining and indulging these morons and their sick, twisted, perversion of a religion? Like rabies, there is no cure for Islamofascism. The sooner we start rounding them up and sending them back, the easier it will be to locate them and incinerate them later on.
NYPost commenters are almost as respectful and tolerant of their opposition as NYTimes editors.
Westboro Baptist would be at home next to that mosque -- with the mayor's support.
"The forward-thinking mayor of NYC would never tolerate the bigoted stances the hateful people at WBC have. Their level of intolerance has no place in the big apple and the mayor would see to it that they could not build there. Freedom of Speech comes with responsibility, and if they cannot speak responsibly and tolerantly then their ability must be curtailed in the name of safety for citizens, policeman and our other heroes. The imam, on the other hand, is simply misunderstood. His direct quote was just taken out of context and should be ignored. Islam has always been and is a religion of peace. The fear-mongering from right-wing media outlets only fuels the false perceptions that Islam promotes violence against non-Muslims, gays, women and cartoonists across the globe. The direct quotes from the Koran espousing violence are, likewise, taken out of context and are being used to incite violence."
an influential blogger running the rumor that the looters are the secret police.
Old news by now.
Not your fault though as you're probably American. Riots just aren't like presidential election campaigns. You actually have to try and keep up with riots, unlike our POTUS campaigns.
Personally, I think there's something to recommend the idea that our POTUS campaigns should have a somewhat more riotous flavor to them.

Allow me to insert this one thought: who gives a fuck?

LOL
The world would be better off if all the artifacts of ancient Egypt were ground to dust then dumped into the sea.
If they can be used to support the regime of a tyrant then they are worse then useless.
i think you might want to stop off at international finance first, bro.
huh?
I nominate this for most insane comment:
Why?
You have a particular fondness for hieroglyphs?
Maybe you are thinking about the hurt feelings of all those Ra worshipers who would miss their golden scarabs.
5. Many of the police and security personnel are greedy and see an oppt'y.
6. Their bosses are giving them encouragement to loot as a fringe benefit.
You won't hear anything; it will all be ignored. Intellectual consistency doesn't exist for partisans.
Seen any anti-war protests lately?
Me neither.
War is not the answer if the other guy is in charge.
At my very liberal UU church this weekend someone brought blank postcards and set up a table to give us an opportunity to send a message to Obama and our congressmen to end the war in Afghanistan. I sent mine to Durbin. He had sent his to Mark Kirk. I saw someone else send one to Danny Davis. Pretty sure that was a form of protest.
7. The Cairo PBA labor contract provides looting privileges to police officers.
Isn't it amazing how everything ultimately proves libertarian dogma right?
Isn't it amazing how everything ultimately proves libertarian dogma wrong?
Yeah, its pretty cool, isn't it, Max?
Still, when your dogma is that people can't be trusted with power, and that states should be kept small and weak, its hardly surprising.
I just posted this in the Rand thread, but I had to post it here as well.
In other news, FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU.
Why am I not surprised. Team Red is just bound and determined to fuck up their chance to get spending under control.
WTF!?!?
They said they want more private investment in this. The only way to get private investors in a money-losing project would be to guarantee their losses would be paid for by the government.
We are screwed.
The Republicans seem like they might try very hard to get me to take Kronos's advice and throw away my vote.
Then again, it is the House Transportation Committee (pork is what they do to keep their hearts ticking!) and one of the guys is named "Shuster," a last name that should ring loud alarm bells when it comes to pork-stuffed transportation funding, so maybe a grain of salt is best here...
I thought they might actually be serious this time. I seem to be wrong.
The GOP is and has always been in the business of fighting for rent-seeking constituents, bailouts, protectionism and corporate welfare. It happens to be the only home for non-Keynesians, but it's run by Keynesians.
Haw-ha. The government caused a problem that the private sector fixed. That really goes against the libertarian mindset.
I'd love to stay and argue that straw man, but, heh heh, it's my honeymoon.
WastingDC: My first editorial, in a little Southern newspaper predicted the inevitable Presidency our Sec State, HRC will be drafted to accept, in 2012. Her Egyptian emergency statements, and the following fell reminder, of the times I wrote that long ago editorial, is appropriate as Egyptian's die, and display their and our magnificent human preference, at any risk, for individual liberty, where ever we tend to be located.
Lest We Forget: On one 9/11 terrorist's plane, a handful of American heroes carefully disarmed by infringement of their rights to keep and bear arms, for personal defense, chose to give up their lives in service of Freedom, and the American Republic. Greater Love, nor Greater Courage, can ever be demonstrated, albeit it may well be being equaled in many places today, in Egypt. With bare hands, American passengers attacked armed 9/11 terrorists, that TSA proves monthly during penetration exercises they cannot prevent, detect, or disarm like they illegally disarmed the heroes and other passengers on that fated flight, in defiance of our US constitution. Politicians and other misinformed bureaucrats continue attempting to continue and extend the infringement of the weapons rights of our helpless blue states' disarmed law abiding citizens, to the rest of us. Nov 2, 10 was a reminder of the political risks of any infringement whatever, with American's inherent right bear arms for self defense.
Facing exactly the horrors our forefathers sought to prevent, those American 9/11 heroes scattered their plane, the terrorists, and their own shattered bodies, over a field of honor, in Pennsylvania. Their sacrifices saved countless politicians, and public employee union members, as the plane was apparently intended to attack the White House, Capitol Building, or another icon of the clueless politicians that work daily to take away the private arms that made America, and have kept the Republic whole, for centuries. Remember our revolution started when British troops were ordered to seize and destroy a store of citizen's arms and ammunition, near a bridge in Concord.
The deaths of those 9/11 heroes and their fellow passengers were in large part, caused by anti-gunners among our politicians, police unions, and Public Employee Union member regulators, preventing law abiding travelers, particularly the several long service military personnel proved to have been on several 9/11 passenger lists, along with law officers, and other trained and vetted homeland defense volunteers, including trained serving Civil Servants, being armed, to protect millions of American flights, trains, buses, and subways they take daily, just as is done by always armed Israeli homeland defense volunteers, where ever they are standing, when terrorists strike.
WastingtonDC: reminds all Americans that millions of humans enslaved by petty dictators worldwide are left with their hands, knives, lengths of pipe, and now in Cairo, molotov cocktails, to help, when their Army asks Egyptians barred on pain of death from owning private arms for self defense, to help in defending their neighborhoods, homes, and family members, from Iranian proxies, roving gangs of looters, militants, or just hungry/angry criminals, none of whom appeared to obey the widespread prohibition of private arms for law abiding Egyptians.
We chortle, as the abamination is being castigated, even hammered daily by its paid voters and the professional far left, for not losing the 2012 election, by demanding that all Americans give up their private arms, right now, on pain of death. These anti gunners insist on disarming their neighbors even as we may well all be forced to face the Egyptian's same problems.
If the present potential for another old European socialist caused depression becomes as bad, or worse than the last one: 100M deaths, hyperinflation, Hitler, Japan, etc, we could face the roving gangs of desperate starving people that our grandparents told us about, hundreds of times, as their worst nightmares.
Thank God, that even the clueless abamination can study Nov 2, 10 political history and realize how politically stupid it would be, to go back to its far left plan to fail, an announced deliberate campaign to destroy all American's gun right.
All these demands for banishing Americans guns, is coming after a memorable politician whipping, wood shed experience administered by our Taxed Enough Already protesters forced to emulate the paid voter block so often insulted and ignored by the abaminaton. Voting in an effective block at last, we held our noses, and shellacked the abaminatoin. That block includes most of some hundred million or more Libertarian, military veterans, active, reserve, retired, disabled, and their families, admirers and sapient supporters from the NRA and GOP, addded to the majority of 43M Americans who hunt with private arms, and vote out any politician dumb enough to try and infringe, in any way, that vital right to keep and bear arms for self defense.
Do you really want to be disarmed, helpless, with a kitchen knife as your only defense, when the food gruel trucks fail to arrive for a week, in WastingtonDC:, NYC, Philadelphia, or Chicago, after the US dollars' fall, to equal the Zimbabwe trillion dollar bills. Egypt's criminals and militants are armed illicitly, by Iran, et al, and will prey on their citizens, openly, when the police have wisely gone home, to stay alive, and protect their own family property, as happened in New Orleans, along with police illegally disarming New Orlean's citizens protecting themselves with private arms. Was it worse, could the Egyptian dictator have ordered the police to gather and protect his abamination, or the elites only, or worse, to go home, stay armed and safe, whilst deliberately exposing their fellow men to Iran's proxies, in hope they will relent, preferring the despot regime's slavery to Iranian proxy savagery?
In similar fashion, American criminals depended for generations on blue state gun banners, to disarm their victims. Apparently, criminals don't like US red state's concealed carry folks who terminate criminal attacks in seconds, then call the police to "take out the trash", when they arrive in a few hours, instead of drawing chalk lines around the bodies of innocent victims. Violence against the citizens of some four dozen red states, where constitutionally protected rights to keep and bear arms are recognized, is plunging so drastically that anti gun statistic managers are losing their battle to keep you from learning that Florida's famous car jackers and rest area robbers prefer to attack cars that do not have Florida License Plates. Criminals appear to have learned about those vulnerable old retirees surprising their attackers with a hundred year old Colt .45 instead of begging for mercy.
Consider the historic facts laid out below, and the constant threat to America's freedom, before you call for disarming your law abiding, often helpless neighbors, in a world where the criminal element will always be larger, stronger, come in gangs, or steal their weapons from policemen, soldiers, et al. This is a quote by a classmate, but not one of those who joined the large number of lefty anti gun voters frantically calling me, during my GI Bill college days, while they hid, trembling at home, office or campus dorm, during riots that pervaded our college town and county. They suddenly wanted to break their favorite local laws infringing their rights to borrow one of my hundred year old antique weapons with some ammo. Of course, like New Orleans during Katrina, and other well known American riots, we were serenaded hourly, with stern Blue/Purple, city, county and state Government public union employee warnings about draconian penalties for sales, carrying, or even transporting, loaning/sharing of any weapons, ammunition, et al, that might have allowed a law abiding American, albeit a rabid anti gunner experiencing an epiphany, to acquire the weapons that were their only hope of self defense, during the raging riots. Those violent riots that roiled the entire city, and county, occurred with still plenty of food, no depression, and police still on duty everywhere. It was a short, sharp, violent learning experience, like Egyptian protests ongoing, and like that we taught the abamination on Nov 2, 10, but much more effective.
Read CP's forwarded history lesson below, it could save your life, and the American Republic, if you learn from reading those historic lessons, or by watching enslaved Egyptian families, and millions of other humans, forced to repeat them, with their bare hands against Iranian, or other criminals' AK47s, grenades, et al. "Class Person" CP, is a euphemism for our really vulgar nickname, for this beloved Nuclear Engineer class mate.
CP's most telling Historical Quotation:
In WWIl Japan 's highest ranking naval officer was Isoruku Yamamoto. Although he was Japanese, and his loyalties were unquestionably with The Empire, he studied for many years in America, graduating from Harvard University. There is an oft-repeated (and sometimes disputed) quote attributed to him regarding the possibility of any nation taking a war to American soil: "You cannot invade the mainland United States . There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass."
Here is why he was correct:
America's Hunters. The World's Largest Army.
The state of Wisconsin has gone an entire deer hunting season without someone getting killed. That's great, considering there were over 600,000 hunters that got permits this year.
Allow me to restate that number.
Over the last two months, the eighth largest army in the world - more men under arms than Iran; more than France and Germany combined - deployed to the woods of a single American state to keep the deer population under control.
But that pales in comparison to the 750,000 who are in the woods of Pennsylvania this week. Michigan's 700,000 hunters have now returned home. Toss in a quarter million hunters in West Virginia , and it is literally the case that the hunters of those four states alone would comprise the largest army in the world.
And that is just FOUR states. The total population of registered hunters in America today ranges from 23 million to 43.7 million individuals. (Based on annual data provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.)
As long as the American Hunter retains his right to Bear Arms, America will forever be safe from foreign invasion of troops. Hunting - it's not just a way to fill the freezer. It's a matter of national security.
Wow. Who the fuck gives a shit?
I'd say get a copy editor, but I don't know any copy editors I hate that much.
lol
Dude. This isn't a blog, it's the comments section of a blog. Next time edit for brevity, and if you have (or start) a blog, put it into the Website box when you post and you might get some people to read the whole thing.
As long as the American Hunter retains his right to Bear Arms, America will forever be safe from foreign invasion of troops.
This is true. If our hunters have Bear Arms, they could tear foreign invaders limb from limb. They'd be good at scratching backs, too.
Fuck, dude. I thought I was long-winded from time to time on here. You almost broke the internet with that "comment." Oh, ed-i-tor!
I thought it was Bare Arms. You know, the Gun Show!
What?
0/10
Honestly I'm pretty skeptical of these reports that say the police is looting. It's not that I don't think the police in Egypt would do this, it's that so far I haven't seen any news stories from credible sources saying this. The first time I heard it was someone speculating that the looters were police on facebook. It just sounds too convenient and too unfounded to be true.
Team Red is just bound and determined to fuck up their chance to get spending under control.
Here's another one for you:
I will not support any measures that stress our forces and jeopardize the lives of our men and women in uniform.
So he will be killing any bills that fund the continuing presence of our troops in the Middle East?
tag fail-
Imagine the 'blockquote" not including that last sentence.
Yeah, but that's pretty predictable for team red.
But, HIGH SPEED RAIL? That's got almost everyone who wants to cut spending scratching their head...even quite a few dems. It was a non-starter.
"How much of the looting is bona fide grassroots rioting and how much is false-flag activity by the cops? I don't know, and neither do you."
Why should that stop us?
Only a retard would try to make that sentence sound like libertarians are gullible. Is that you Mr. Pedant?
So....how about you come back to us when we have, oh, some FACTS or something, rather than speculation.
"I don't know, and neither do you."
That's just mega-useful...thanks.
One thing for sure, never believe the initial media reports about these events. That is one thing that the last 10 years have taught us. Remember the "looting" of the Baghdad museum? Or the murders in the Super Dome and the shots being taken at rescue helicopters in New Orleans? None of that shit was true but was reported as true by the media.
Another thing to remember is how big a city like Cairo (one of the two or three largest in the world if I am not mistaken) is and how distorting television is. All you see on TV are the spots where there is rioting. You don't see the other 99% of the city where nothing is happening.
I can see that you are putting a lots of efforts into your blog. Keep posting the good work. Some really helpful information in there. Bookmarked. Nice to see your site. Thanks!
Now that the protests are hitting there peak I think things are sure to move quickly. Soon this scenario will play out here on the streets of America. There are forces at work trying to usher in the last days, Revelations, the Apocalypse... call it the Illuminati, the New World Order, or whatever you want... it is coming... hell it is already here! Step by step we will all watch as the reality around us unravels, that is unless we are lucky enough to be awake. Those of us who have our eyes open can avoid the initial blows but it will take a strong Army to fight the wars that are ahead. Be prepared, be safe, and awaken those around you, they will be next to you in the battle.
