Majority of Public Not Convinced That ObamaCare Will Make Their Lives Better
Since February 2009, the Kaiser Family Foundation has released a monthly health tracking poll examining public perception of the health care debate. The poll is widely considered to be one of the most authoritative surveys of opinion about the health law; it frequently generates headlines in major news outlets, and, over the summer, briefly helped convince supporters of the law that the public might finally be warming to it. The most recent poll, though, doesn't have much in the way of good news for supporters of the law. Although it suggests that the health care overhaul may not have been as influential in last week's election as early exit polls suggested—Kaiser reports that health care was only the fourth most important issue, while some early exit polling put it in second place—it indicates that the voters who were concerned with health care were unhappy about it. According to Politico, a majority of voters who said health care was a top voting issue voted Republican. Meanwhile, the number of people who think the health care law will improve their lives is at a record low:
Only 25 percent of the public now say they expect their own families to be better off under the reform law, the lowest response since Kaiser began asking the question in February 2009. Another 31 percent say they'll be worse off and 34 percent think it won't make much difference.
That's 65 percent who expect to see no benefit from the law. Democrats have frequently chalked statistics like these up to messaging failures, arguing that if the public understood the benefits, which polls show the public likes, they'd appreciate the law more. So Democrats have continually amped up efforts to explain those benefits, forgetting that costs are involved as well. But costs matter too. Just because you can get the public to say they like the law's benefits doesn't mean they think those benefits are worth putting up with other parts of the law that the public likes less.

INGRATES! The O will have great and terrible vengeance upon your pitiful souls! Repent and recant, and you may be granted pity!
Persist, and die by Death Panel hellfire!!
Let me be clear - I am the Lord God of Hellfire. Bitches.
Let me be clear: You are a eunuch married to a mule.
If you don't like ObamaCare, Barry will wish you into the cornfield with his mighty BRAIN.
Hey, Barry, it sure is wonderful how my insurance premiums went up! Gosh, that's super. And my flexible savings account doesn't cover HALF the stuff it used to, thanks to ObamaCare. Gosh that's super-keen, isn't it, everyone?? Isn't Barry just the most awesomest president ever? Ugh... I cant take it! Barry, you effin' JERK!
*poof*
"Not convinced" seems too tepid a phrase to me.
My thought exactly.
"Understand All Too Well" strikes me as the way to go.
Oh, and throw a "Not" in there, too.
The eternal optimist will say that it is 65 percent who are either enthusiastic about it or just don't mind it.
Read: They think people are dumb.
My lady friend already had her health insurance rates go up 25%. She was never too enthusiastic about it before, but now I'd guess she considers it nothing short of an unmitigated disaster. Something similar is probably happening for millions across the country.
This is not what the Democrat "strategists" have told me. They've been trumpeting their pet poll which states America's preference for ObamaCare at 47% in favor to 46% against. Biggest gang Majority rules, teabaggers, folks.
Majority of Public Not Convinced That ObamaCare Will Make Their Lives Better As Stupid As Obama Thought They Were
FTFY.
My health care premium just went up over 30%.
Thanks, ObamaCare!
The dumb thing is, people will believe that was caused by the insurance companies being greedy. They just did it out of spite.
Even though that implies that the insurance companies weren't actually being greedy before, they were nice companies just leaving that extra money on the table.
People who believe that prices go up when companies "get greedy" have way more faith in the inherent altruistic benevolence of corporations than any libertarian.
"25 percent of the public now say they expect their own families to be better off under the reform law."
Apparently, at least 40% of these people are in for a bit of a surprise.
Ooh, you're going to get such a Colinoscopy for saying that!
Ooh, you nasty lady, Kathleen.
Clap, you bastards!
Tinkerbell needs your help.
Thanks, ObamaCare!
INGRATE!
I did like half of that.
"So Democrats have continually amped up efforts to explain those benefits, forgetting that costs are involved as well. But costs matter too."
Democrats: "You just won a free Maserati!"
American People: "...um...yay?"
Democrats "Now here's your bill for $120,000."
American People: "See you in 2012."
The portion of our premium we pay just went up 50%.
I think the GOP is going to have so much fun campaigning against this leviathian pile of crap that they won't want to repeal it.
It's really important that we keep using the word "ObamaCare" for the next two years.
Really. Important.
More important than any other argument we make. People rationalize against or for various arguments for myriad reasons, but if the general public associates the name "Obama" with that steaming pile of healthcare legislation?
There's no effective argument against that!
I fully expect any argument against the one will be met with cries of racism anyway. They've done it for nearly 2 years now. It's really all they've got.
32% increase here.
I'll take this opportunity to put a voodoo hex on all the libertarians/conservatives here who didn't think McCain was the lesser evil and therefore voted third party or didn't vote (there're even rumors that some of you voted Obama to punish the GOP).
McCain just wanted to eliminate the tax-exempt status of employee health insurance benefits and use the additional revenue to give each household a voucher to help them buy health insurance. Granted, it was redistributive and almost certainly not revenue neutral, but at least it introduced some market forces and was nowhere near the monstrosity of Obamacare.
(there're even rumors that some of you voted Obama to punish the GOP)
If I read it right then, supposing the last POTUS election had been based on Reason staff alone, Obama would have won by a landslide.

Remember that there's never ever been any tendency to lean leftward around here, given the choice. Nosiree. They'll beat you and throw big hard things at you, if you even suggest it.
And remember those Republicans deserved it. And besides, there was this book to sell and I seem to recall it had something to do with McCain.
We are all so much better off now than we would have been with McCain.
And whatever else you say, don't get the idea that some panel of government bureaucrats is going to end up deciding what health care you are, and are not, allowed to have.
McCain is an unprincipled Nervous Twitch and you never know exactly where he's going to land on what issues. But I sincerely doubt we'd have McCainCare -- and McCain did at least tell the truth about what's going to happen with Iraq and Afghanistan. More than we can say about Obama.
And Palin might be a genuine twit, but we almost assuredly will see the day when government bureaucrats decide what health care we can and cannot have.
"If I read it right then, supposing the last POTUS election had been based on Reason staff alone, Obama would have won by a landslide."
If the 2008 elections were based on Reason staff alone, libertarians would be the majority party in Congress.
Majority of Public Not Convinced That ObamaCare Will Make Their Lives Better
Let me be clear.
Thanks to the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, these poor unfortunates will be treated for their mental illness.
Nancy doesn't give a fuck what the public thinks.
Barack doesn't give a flying fuck what you think.
Death Panels are a reasonable response to government-caused shortages.
Health care mandate for the Fatherland.
If you don't agree, they have a rehab program for you.
I just cant stop reading this. Its so cool, so full of information that I just didnt know. Im glad to see that people are actually writing about this issue in such a smart way, showing us all different sides to it. Youre a great blogger. Please keep it up. I cant wait to read whats next.
I attended a presentation given by the head of one of the largest health-care providers on the left coast. He claimed to have read the entire package and understood it as best he could; his reference to various details suggested he did.
His prediction was a ~20%/annum rise in costs *over* any increases absent Obamacare for the foreseeable future.
Contrary to the lefty view, he was not pleased with this, as *he* was the guy who had to present the increases to his customers, collect the extra dough, only to pass it on to various regulatory agencies or legal consultants.
BTW, where's the 'tip of the hat'? Gabby scooped this in "The Case Against ObamaCare's Individual Mandate"

I have seen numerous lefty talking heads push this tactic. They keep claiming that polls show that one feature or another of Obamacare is popular.
But asking somebody whether they like some benefit in abstract as if somebody else is going to be paying for it means nothing. Of course people like getting stuff free. If they think they are going to have to pay for it that's another ball game.
And if they think they will NOT be getting the benefit in question but WILL be paying for somebody else to get it, that is REALLY another ball game.

Some bozo mentioned that forcing insurance companies to accept "pre-existing conditions" was wildly popular according to some poll or other.
So are free ponies. Expensive ponies, not so much.
There are now as many people in America that think Obama was born in Kenya as there are people who believe Obamacare will make their life better.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA.
