Nope, ObamaCare Didn't Help Democrats at the Polls
Time's Kate Pickert has a helpful report on the health care overhaul and the election. Key line: "There are clear signs that pundits who predicted high-profile losses for the Democratic Party in districts and states where health care was a major campaign issue were right." It's very difficult to pin any individual loss (or win) on a single issue, and obviously Democrats were set for a significant loss this November in just about any case. But as I've argued previously, the key thing to note about health care and the election was that prominent Democrats, including multiple White House representatives, confidently predicted that it would be a winning campaign issue—something that would actively help Democrat fortunes—and they seem to have sold that message to a lot of the party rank and file. It never seemed particularly likely that this narrative would turn out to be true, and, as it turns out, it wasn't.

it's difficult to attribute losses to a single issue.
Oh no, it's not!
Did some post disappear ? I was reading something and F-5ed and it went all 404...
Sorry. It was only a test you weren't supposed to see.
It is time for plan b, calling off all future elections. Americans are simply a danger to themselves and are not capable of choosing the correct leaders, as the GOP House takeover shows. Obama should use the military for something useful, for once, that is, ensuring he stays in power indefinitely and is able to institute his policies. America cannot afford to do otherwise.
But just wait until people find out what's in the bill.
Considering that nothing got people so exercised as the health care bill being passed, and considering how hard it was to pass and what had to be done to pass it, anyone not seeing this coming was engaging in wishful thinking.
What I don't understand is why the Dem party rank-and-file bought it. Many of them seemed to know it was a real loser for them. And...now they're out of office.
You assume that this was passed for political reason, not so they could seize control of how people live their lives.
+1
Who is "they"? It certainly isn't the Dems who just lost their jobs, yet those Dems went along with this plan. So either they sacrificed themselves (which makes no sense), or they were dumb enough to let the party leaders convince them that it would be good for them.
I bet they're kicking themselves right now. Which makes me laugh.
No they're not. They're just trying to think how many criminals and illegal immigrants they can get registered to vote before the next election.
Alice laughed. `There's no use trying,' she said `one ca'n't believe impossible things.'
`I daresay you haven't had much practice,' said the Queen. `When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast. There goes the shawl again!'
I don't know about all Dems, but I don't assume that all Democrats only care about politics and furthering their career. I think some were willing to sacrifice their seats in order to have the federal government call the shots in our health care. I don't know which is worse.
So either they sacrificed themselves (which makes no sense)
I am going with option A here.
If only so we examine the possibility more closely.
Why does it make no sense that Democrats are kamikaze pilots?
...
I mean Kamikaze Pilots did exist. Any rational person would say they should not exist but they did. Kamikaze pilots were fanatical warriors bent on spreading fear in their enemies and dying to push their cause despite its lack of reason.
How again does this not fit the description of modern day Democrats?
This is what I was trying to say, but you said much better. Dems have a "higher" purpose than self-preservation, perhaps, unfortunately.
So don't we supposedly have a department of homeland insecurity, or something like that, to deal with suicidal people like this?
I mean in theory there shouldn't be any problem here that can't be dealt with.
And in the long-term, more people addicted to the government dole is a plus.
What I don't understand is why the Dem party rank-and-file bought it.
Me, neither. It's as if the leadership has the goods on all these clowns.
CNN projects Reid wins. Too bad.
So unpopular legislation doesn't help you win elections???? Holy moley, my mind is blown!
Democrat party, Peter.
Suderman was right they were wrong.
Eat that blogginghead left wing scum bags!!
Note: Suderman was wrong about Healthcare passing. Of course Suderman probably made the mistake of thinking that Democrats were not politically suicidal.
Only in this election cycle. As with Medicare and Social Security, the (very reasonable) bet is that the American people want "free" shit, and will vote for it unto the death.
In related news, the sky is not green either.
18 terms for House Transportation Chairman Jim Oberstar, ended tonight because of Obamacare. The Stupak pro-life Dems did especially poorly.
