Why Sarah Palin Matters…to Democrats
At Salon, Glenn Greenwald notes this New York Times story–"Democrats Invoking Palin to Stir Base"–and comments:
I personally find it hard to believe that large numbers of voters will be motivated by a fear-mongering campaign centered around people who do not currently wield power, do not occupy any positions, and are not even running for office. But the more significant point is what this tactic says about the Democratic Party. They have controlled both houses of Congress for almost four years and the White House for almost two. Yet rather than run primarily on affirmative accomplishments (some Democrats are even running against them), they're reduced to this not-very-inspiring or hope-laden message: at least we're not as bad as Sarah Palin. […]
There's one irony worth noting in all of this as well. It's been extremely common to hear Democratic Party commentators complain that the media pays too much attention to Palin and her various utterances. But the reality, as today's NYT article demonstrates, is that Democratic officials want her front and center, and have done everything they can to keep her in the spotlight, because they desperately need her to distract from their own record. Above all else, they want Palin and those like her to receive as much attention as possible, all in an attempt to try to use fear as a replacement for the hope and inspiration which are largely missing even among their own core supporters.

Sarah, how many Democrats are getting voted out this fall?
"All of 'em, any of 'em that have been in front of me over all these years."
I think $arah is going to tear down the entire Republican party.
The Dems will surely win now.
$arah is like the PIED PIPER to HELL.
She's thinking short term and only cares about herself and that little RUSH she's getting. It's all about her.
The funniest thing is that no one can say for sure just how "bad" a Sarah Palin presidency would be . . . thus making the whole comparison that much more pathetic. I do feel sorry for the Dem-agogues...
Given her social conservatism, I'd vote Democrat if Palin was the other choice.
I'm no Palin fan, nor am I a fruitcake hater. I don't think she would win a primary. Hope not. But didn't the electorate already take that route? How's that fucking working out?
Even so, I can only imagine how shitty America would be if McCain/Palin-monster won.
I think it'd be about the same as it is now, but with a slightly smaller deficit.
A is Awesome:
You MIGHT just want to and look at Sarah Palin's ACTUAL 20 PLUS year record of public service instead of believing whatever nonsense the media has force-fed you.
Personally Sarah is incredibly conservative. (a good thing) but she governs like a libertarian.
You'll find her career has always been about getting and keep the financial house in order, something she is one of the best in the nation at, and going after corrupt politicians, even those in her own party.
This is actually why the GOP elites hate her so much. They know WHEN she becomes President in 2013, their corrupt little butts are in deep doo-doo.
Sarah took down the entire Alaska Republican Party over corruption.
She went after the oil companies too. Took on the CEO of the largest corporation on earth, and told him how it was gonna be.
We couldn't be more blessed to have such a top notch person ready to become our next President.
also, as useful as she might be to rile up the base, I don't think she's all that scary to Democrat-leaning and independent voters in general, so I don't think making her the centerpiece of their campaign is such a smart move.
Well, if the choice is to talk about Jughead and his screw-ups, his nasty wife or Palin, I completely understand the focus on Palin.
CALL 911, I'M HAVING A SEIZURE!
And that's just from reading a Greenwald quote. Don't even get me started on that animated gif.
How come the oppressors can use animated GIFs in their posts but SF isnt allowed yellow blinky text?
For a magazine called "Reason"
Thank you Bandit, I needed a drink today.
i live to serve...HA a pun.
Indeed, Palin Obsession Syndrome seems to affect way more pundits on the left.
"Sarah just backed one out! Get in there and get a comment before she flushes it!"
Upon further review, I can definitively say that this particular material did not come from Sarah Palin, it came from that whore Bristol.
AND IT SHOWS!!!
The great strategic minds at the DNC have apparently concluded that running against Bush really isn't going to work this year, so they will run against . . . Sarah Palin! . . . instead.
Meanwhile, the apparatchiks in the punditocracy who told us, with furrowed brow, that the Republicans were doomed to failure if they only ran against the Obama Machine and lacked a positive agenda, have somehow neglected to make this same point vis-a-vis the Dems.
The great strategic minds at the DNC have apparently concluded that running against Bush really isn't going to work this year, so they will run against . . . Sarah Palin! . . . instead.
And it works.
Mention Palin (or Glenn Beck) around any partisan Team Blue twit. It's like Pavlov has his own little school just for this.
common enemy
When ya got nutin' to show for your work you have to create a common enemy to compete.
Great. So now that conservatives have finally let go of Palin, the left is going to keep her front and center. Awesome.
Admit it, you want her to hang around long enough for Nailin' Palin 2.
There's a Nailin' Palin 1?
Don't bother. It has a plot.
How disappointing.
You must be disappointed a lot.
What the hell does Darrell Waltrip have to do with Sarah Palin?
Took me a while, but I got it....
Shove that blinky picture up your ass, Mister Welch. Up your ass.
This is why I read H&R with only cached images showing.
"all in an attempt to try to use fear as a replacement for the hope and inspiration"
Sad, really.
Here's my theory:
All the lefty guys are buggo over Palin, and she won't even return a tweet.
So, like scorned teenagers, they whine, claim they hate her and can do little else other than talk about her.
Personally, I'm tired of it
Good point. I'm surprised none of them have run up and pulled her pigtails. On second thought, she'd beat their asses, so it's not really that surprising.
sage|9.13.10 @ 5:24PM|#
"...she'd beat their asses,..."
Which, I surmise, is a good part of the reason they are buggo.
Is this new? Rush Limbaugh, early 1990's--same deal. Right? Vote for Gore and get the Hollywood elites. And a vote for Obama is a vote for Ayres. Far easier to run against a strawman than a real person.
In other news, the sun will rise tomorrow.
When you've lost Glenn Greenwald, you've lost ...
I figure Greenwald is probably one of the first ones to be lost, since he seems to actually care about policies rather than the letters beside names. He's been one of the few lefties to criticize the Obama administration on a regular basis.
B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-Bush Palin did it.
B-B-B-B-B-B-Bush Palin did it.
B-B-B-B-B-B-Bush Palin did it.
She's history's greatest monster.
Spoken like a scared feminazi
B-B-B-B-B-B-Bush Palin did it.
Given her social conservatism, I'd vote Democrat if Palin was the other choice.
I don't know that she is a social con, politically. She's anti-abortion, rhetorically, but that's not a conservative-specific position. There are official TEAM _____! positions, but they're not ideological. They're trust signals beamed at electoral blocs. Nothing much comes of them after any November.
Has she done any social-con things?aside from not pointedly alienating social-cons? She was a governor. They do all kinds of governy things. Alaska doesn't provide many opportunities for its politicians to social-con it up, because the people there aren't into that shit, but the one chance I remember she had, when a bill to block employee benefits for gheys whose cohabitors work for the state crossed her desk, she vetoed it because she thought it was unconstitutional.
I know it doesn't matter what she does, what she really probably would do, or what she's actually done. Elections aren't about that kind of nonsense. But.
They're trust signals beamed at electoral blocs.
That's good.
Anyone who lets their daughter run around with a loser like Levi can't be too social conservative.
There are winners in Alaska?
Obama is apparently running against
Boehner. As if the sheeple know who the hell Boehner is. Just look at the faces of the extras they use at Obama's economic campaign speeches. Palin's a better strawman. Much better.
Picking on Boehner is probably based on the anti-Newt Gingrich ploy of the late 90s that seemed to work. but it is perplexing. Boehner is pretty bland. Scary looking maybe. But it really doesn open up a Boehner vs. Pelosi opportunity for the Reps. It's not so much that Boehner wins, Pelosi just loses.
I was reading that hack Sargent at washpost today, about the attack ads Reid was running against Angle. All I could think of was "How fucking crazy does a republican candidate have to be to return the democrats to congress?"
Then I remembered I was a libertarian and the obvious answer is "legalize it and ask me then."
Hmmm, even in that GIF she is still hotter than Hillary.
all in an attempt to try to use fear as a replacement for the hope and inspiration which are largely missing even among their own core supporters.
The core supporters just wanted to get rid of bush. The hope was that the next president would not be bush, and the inspiration was the cidea of a non-Bush future.
Since those things have been accomplished, nobody is getting too excited about the hope for ... what exactly? ... and inspired by the dream of ... ???
The hope was that the next president would not be bush ... Since those things have been accomplished
Have we been watching the same administration?
TW did anyone notice that Rush Limbaugh mentioned Hit&Run; on his show today about the Palin article last week? He read one of the comments i think it was dbcooper's if i recall but I am too lazy to look it up. If even HE is reading H&R then there may be hope.
I don't like the sound of this. The population of trolls would EXPLODE if his listeners actually start coming here. At least now they're manageable.
Yeah, a dittohead invasion would be brutal. Actually, it could be fun for a little while.
Picture a thousand lonewhackos.
I miss lonewhacko.
i swear if this summons LW then I am holdign you responsible.
I do too. Hey Matt, can LoneBoner come back?

It was this comment by 'Cyto':

That would be it.
I don't know, i like making hard line cons rethink their premises. At least you can reason with half of them...no hope for hard line libs.
Oooh! Rush noticed me! He likes me, he really likes me!
Democrats have a serious problem when Raul Castro is to their right.
Cuba announced Monday it will cast off at least half a million state workers by early next year and reduce restrictions on private enterprise to help them find new jobs ? the most dramatic step yet in President Raul Castro's push to radically remake employment on the communist-run island.
Palin is a dictator like Castro!
there should be a B at the from of that post
Also from Greenwald

The same week the U.S. gov't announced that suspects who we tortured can't sue our government, Iraq agrees to pay us 400 million$ in damages for any Americans tortured by Saddam, as a condition for lifting U.N. sanctions. I hate this country.
Let's see. Democrats refuse to legalize marijuana and they refuse to raise the number of diversity visas for immigration. When are we going to start targeting the DINOs for election defeat by reminding their base how much they have failed?
Not a bad idea. Just focus on the democrats who have sucked on social issues and immigration. Remind the base that there are issues besides handing out entitlements and subsidizing automakers that they are supposed to care about.
Not a bad idea. Just focus on the democrats who have sucked on social issues and immigration. Remind the base that there are issues besides handing out entitlements and subsidizing automakers that they are supposed to care about.
I don't think we have to remind the dems how much Barry has failed. Every time Biden or Gibsy speaks, it is Rham-ed home.
Why does it seem like the federal government and its elections are more like a LJ battle between the retards of Team Edward and Team Jacob than arguments between educated and reasoned statesmen?
Team Blue #1: "That Palin is, like, such a bitch!"
Team Blue #2: "Yeah, I like, totally hate her!"
Team Blue #1: "We should, like, hate her together or something!"
Team Blue #2: "Oh my God! Yeah! Let's send out a tweet about how much we, like, hate her and stuff!"
They're window dressing the real issue being incapable to hold a position. People in government likes talking about their selves, criticize Palin, but what they says about her also says about themselves. Government per see, not just the Republican and Democrats, should mend their ways. People should not expect lot from the government since they always find a way to disappoint American people.

Two Minutes Hate beats responsible governing any day.
They also don't tell you what Palin's record is.. Before they started distorting with their lapdog media, she was like by 80% of her constituents. She cleaned out corruption in her own party. The more the dems hit her, the more people find these things out. The dems don't deserve the power they have.
Where do you get 80% ? As to corruption, she is right up with the best of them. Find out what she said when she re-decorated the office she occupied as mayor in Wasilla. Sarah the dim.
Hey, Wes, her approvals were at 80% the year she soaked the oil and gas companies for more taxes so she could double the checks Alaska sends to her residents, thereby 'spreading the wealth' to every citizen, something she was for before she was against it. She did nothing to 'clean up corruption' that wasn't already started by Dems before she was elected. Her account of her own record is very biased, and you would do well to find out some of the facts of her two ventures governing. She left Wasilla and Alaska in debt.
I also love how you are all so certain that Dems have been in control for four years, when Bush vetoed every bill they presented that didn't have war spending attached, and the we do not have a true majority in either house, so Reps have been able to nix nearly everything that would work submitted by Obama. But go ahead, blame us for turning the economy around, creating jobs, lowering taxes, and withdrawing the combat forces from Iraq. I'd say we've accomplished a LOT.
Are you delusional or what? When did the economy turn around? Was it with all the jobs saved or created during recovery summer? Funny how NO dems are running on your fairy-tale accomplishments. Instead, they're pointing out how they voted AGAINST Obamacare. Quick- look over there, Palin dresses like a girl...
If you really believe this, don't tell us, tell the Democrats who are running against Sarah Palin instead.
The Democrats are making a big mistake (another one) if they think focusing on Sarah Palin will scare people to their side. Sarah Palin is the hope for the future for everyone in the country except the East and west coast. She is the one we want in the Oval Office. She is the one who can reverse out of control spending, diminishing national defense and irrational energy policy. The Democrats are continually underestimating Sarah Palin and it will be their ruin. All of the candidates she has endorsed will win in November. She will use this platform as a springboard to launch her successful presidential campaign.
Get used to it libs. Madam President Palin.
