I'm Not a Special Interest, Not That There's Anything Wrong With That
This missive from "Wendy C." just landed in my inbox:
Without federal help, a lot of teachers like me -- as well as other public servants like police officers and firefighters -- will lose their jobs. Maybe you know some of these people. Maybe it's you.
Democrats in Congress are trying to do the right thing, proposing emergency assistance for states to preserve more than 100,000 jobs like mine. They're racing back to the Capitol for an emergency session this week to pass this bill and save these jobs.
But Republicans are standing in the way. Minority Leader John Boehner is calling the bill a "payoff" to "special interests" and attacking every Democrat who is fighting for us.
But I'm not a special interest. I'm a teacher.
I hate to break it to you Wendy, but you are both. Teachers unions are some of the most powerful special interests in the country. They consistently show up near the top of lists of the biggest federal and state political donors. The Examiner's Tim Carney made the case handily earlier this summer in a broader piece about public sector unions:
Government employee unions — through their employees and political action committees — have contributed more money to congressional candidates this election than all the PACs, executives and employees of the entire oil industry, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics. Because 92 percent of public-employee union money goes to Democrats, President Obama's party has raised more money from these unions this cycle than Republicans have raised from Wall Street…
The American Federation of Teachers has also spent more this election — $7.1 million — than any business PAC.
Or as Matt Welch has noted:
Over the past two decades, the heavily Democrat-leaning National Education Association and American Federation of Teachers have donated the 7th most political money and 14th most, respectively, in the nation. In California, teachers unions accounted for 20% of all political donations over the past decade.
It all sounds pretty special and interesting to me.

I'm not a special interest. I'm a teacher.
And therefore a member of a Protected Class. Say no more, Wendy! Please forward your home address so I may send you a special package.
But what's the name of the bill?
It's the bill with no name.
Just call it "Blondie"
It's good to be out of the rain.
I may be going out on a limb, but maybe, just maybe (and it may be a stretch, I recognize that): this bill IS a massive payoff to the teachers' unions.
It is possible.
Wendy knows its a payoff, that's the point. Otherwise she wouldn't be spamming people to support the shakedown.
But payoffs are OK unless you're an oil company, or some other greedy profit hoarding bastard devilorporation.
What's wrong with teachers organizing a lobby with which to legislate themselves better pay and benefits? Aside from the whole "loonies running the asylum" aspect, I mean.
Where's hmm, i got no oven mitt in my kitchen and my forehead is starting to go concave.
I am pretty sure that the point of school funding is supposed to be to educate students, not to keep teachers in good paying jobs. Even assuming that public schools are great and will solve all of our problems, this woman's argument is disgusting. As if keeping her employed were an end in itself.
Your comment identifies you as a disgusting, violent, cracker-racist teabagger. There is no place in our great nation for psycho-talking haters like you.
You left out ratfucking.
Thanks, Fatty! Amended to read: Your comment identifies you as a disgusting, violent, cracker-racist, teabagging ratfucker.
And I am so using that on my show tonight, as soon as that albino freak Chris Matthews finally ends his daily retardathon.
Did I say that outloud?
As if keeping her employed were an end in itself
And there you'll have it.
Wait for it ... 'But it's for the children.'
SEIU; ABA; AMA; UAW; NEA; AFTA; AFL-CIO; big O'bummer backers. Oh and don't overlook the unseen hand of Soros. Yea, it's for the children all right.
The good captain said it best:
LET THEM DIE!
The sort of spam I usually get would have included a picture of Wendy C engaged in illegal, predatory activity during detention with a lucky male student.
I so badly want to see any type of federal "help" fail, and then hear the wailing and screeching from the teacher parasites. I will savor it like a fine wine.
A cousin of mine went to college in her late 20's-early 30's and got a teaching degree. Prior to that, she had always seemed pretty apolitical. A year or two of public school teaching, and she was suddenly the Democrats' biggest cheerleader, actually calling around to friends and family to ask that they vote for the candidate who is for "education." Ugh. I don't know what they put in the school cafeteria food to have such an effect.
Sounds like a scam to me.
My wife is an anomoly - she went into teaching, and is now somewhere to the right of Attila the Hun politically.
Doesn't even bother to engage in conversations with The Horde now, for fear of leaping forward and choking them to death while they share talking points over lunch.
I've seen that happen. The flow of bullshit is pretty incredible in the teacher's lounge. If you're at all honest, you retreat into a total state of rejection.
My sister is a teacher who is a conservative/libertarian and she gives the same impression that the political view of most teachers is somewhere to the left of Noam Chomsky. The louder ones just assume every teacher in any given room with them is the same (and they're probably mostly right).
Wendy C. could easily make more money in the private sector if she wasn't such a selfless public servant so we should pay her the fair value of a liberal arts teaching credential.
[FWIW my bro-in-law plated that junk over the weekend at a family cookout. children were present so i just laughed heartily and said nothing.]
I have friends who are policemen and teachers. I have absolutely no desire that they lose their jobs. But dammit, when we can't afford to pay you it means we can't afford to pay you!
It's not your fault, you angrily tell me, and I agree. It is not your fault. You have been good cops and teachers. It is your unions that screwed things up, and your local governments. But that changes nothing, we cannot pay you if we cannot pay you. Don't go crying to me about how unfair it is that Meg got paid millions, you're not Meg. What do you expect me to do, shit some dollar bills out my ass?
fuck meg, she sounds like a real police and teacher haiting bitch who doesn't pay enough taxes
If a person's private company went out of business and they lost their job, and they said "that's unfair, I need a federal bailout", these teachers and cops would laugh at them. But when it comes to themselves, it seems it's not a laughing matter.
I am so anticipating the firing of so many useless parasites.
"If a person's private company went out of business and they lost their job, and they said "that's unfair, I need a federal bailout", these teachers and cops would laugh at them. But when it comes to themselves, it seems it's not a laughing matter."
Well that's because "public service" is all special and noble and a "higher calling" and all those "public servants" have altrusitic motives as pure as the driven snow for choosing those occupations - not mere crass monegrubbing as occurs in the private sector.
The peddlers of that crap will spew it while simultaneous whining for guaranteed pay raises, job protection and sweetheart pension and retirement benefits that very few in the private sector get.
My mom just lost her job as a school administrator because their standardized test scores went down and firing the actual teachers responsible for the low test scores would have meant having to fuck with the union, which they didn't want to do. She's still waiting for her bailout.
It has absolutely nothing to do with inflated salaries and benefits/retirement in to which they needn't put a dime.
Hey, if you want to make it part of a real no shit effort to permanently downsize government, you can have my government job. I am not kidding.
Everyone has to sacrifice sometime. These people are always talking about what selfless public servants they are. Then fine, lets see some selflessness and willingness to give up something for the greater good of the country.
I'll agree here. I work for a regional-level governmental organization, and I always tell my boss that my goal is planned obsolescence not just for me, but for the whole damned system -- I want things to improve so much that the public doesn't need us anymore and we shut down.
But I'll settle for a shutdown due to mass fiscal sanity. I'd have to declare bankruptcy, since I have no savings and live paycheck to paycheck, but I'd take a grim satisfaction out of taking one for the team.
I will replace the need for teachers in 7 years.
We'll see about that.
You'd damn well better!
You or Anono-Bot.

What city appeared for the rest of you?
She do this on a school PC?
Unlikely, it was sent out from info@barackobama.com.
I want to find out what city appears in the signature of the email everyone else received. Please copy and paste the signature of the email you received here.
"Without federal help Because we don't produce anything of value, a lot of teachers like me will lose their jobs."
But in American political-hack-speech, there are "good" special interests, and "bad" special interests.
According to Team Blue, the "good" special interests are Big Government/Business and Big Labor. Team Red prefers Big Business/Government and Big Church.
There are maybe five guys in D.C. supporting Big Liberty, but Big Liberty doesn't bring in the dollars.
So I should quit reading this blog and give up my ideological leanings because I will never ever see things turn out "my" way....
Wow! Teachers are THE special interest, not just A special interest. I particularly like it when they are asked their opinion on education policy *as advocates for students* - which they most assuredly are not.
Like asking UAW members as advocates for the auto industry, which they basically destroyed (yes, it's going under eventually; you can't make cars with labor costs of $50/hour).
I know a coupla Catholic schoolteachers around these parts who are super jealous of the public schoolteachers higher pay and cushier job. I tends to agree with that they have it pretty sweet and the ones who are lazy complacent fuckeheads should be dismissed to make room for energetic youthful teachers who might even deserve some of the benefits. Sucks how the whole schoolteacher gig is totally based on seniority. I mean, like, old people totally suck and say "gimme gimme gimme" like all the time. Where did I put my car keys?
This is such a scam. The public is now convinced every spending cut to education (hell, every spending FREEZE) is going to result in students getting their desks and books yanked out from under them. Just like every cut/freeze in Medicaid/Care will result in old folks eating dog food and poor people bleeding to death in the gutter.
And both parties go right along with it.
Yes, what exactly does it take to educate children? I've been stunned at some of the multi-million dollar boondoggles they have in our local school system. No surprise, of course, since we've been throwing money at education without the slightest sign of improvement for decades.
a dedicated, literate person willing to spend a few hours a day guiding a child to discover something new.
I tell you, I could teach a kid to read, write, and do basic math with a phone book and a pencil, I swear it is that easy. Persistence and patience are key. After about 4th grade, kids become very self-directed in their learning and require less and less supervision as time goes on.
One thing that makes the current system suck so bad is that the "minimum level of education" really equals "ready to enter college after high school." But all the tech and money and books and gadgetry in the world can't make a kid think if he was never taught how to reason, use logic, or has a basic level of factual knowledge about subjects. These tenets of classical education are gone, gone, gone from the majority of curricula - all the emphasis is on creativity and skill building (important, yes, but not as sole objective of education).
I am seriously considering NOT returning to the teaching profession. Too political and too easy to piss off kids, parents, and administrators alike. Being in school feels like being stuck in Huxley's Brave New World - don't venture any opinions that go outside the standard published curricula, or you might find yourself being reprogrammed into a different level of servitude.
Dear Wendy C (if that really *is* your name);
Die in a fire.
thanks
This is typical public sector employee thinking. The economy is tough, and the government should tighten their belts like everyone else. When revenues go down in business, you are forced to remove your weakest employees. No such time exists for governmnet, and as a result we end up with a lot of really lousy employees.
You could lay off half the teachers and our children wouldn't be any less educated than they are already. And God Damn these ever expanding school supplies lists.
No shit. I have to supply dry-erase markers for one of my kids this year.
We have to buy community supplies for our kids. So I'm paying--on tax of my tax burden--for tissues and antibacterial gel for a whole class.
After 17 weeks of Friday furloughs in Hawaii, test scores went UP. The possibilities are endless.
I only wish I could get my education tax money back being that, so long as I have any say, my child won't ever see the inside of a public school.
That's bullshit. There's no way only 92% of the public-employee union money goes to Democrats.
The other 8% goes to us.
... oops ...
*covers mouth*
You forgot Olympia Snow and Susan Collins.
Despite the NEA's power, doesn't anyone find it odd that we haven't been hearing any crazy stories about obscene teacher pensions? This is probably because they have few mechanisms to pad their final salary.
Of course, I have no idea why this padding is allowed in the first place. The few corporations that still offer traditional pensions virtually exclusively base it on your base salary over your last 3-5 years.
Which is easily padded in the last 3-5 years.
Wendy, you are not only a teacher and a special interest, but it appears you are also a special person for not realizing the later. You stupid fucking retard.
latter.
If I know one thing I know retards. We can smell our own.
10 billion dollars, for 100,000 jobs saved. Hrmm. Divide, no carry, move the decimal point over, $100,000 per job saved.
How much are we paying teachers these days (esp. the most junior ones, first to be fired)? Where do I sign up?
I got my pencil! Gimme something to write on!
I'm so sick of the term "special interests" in our political system. EVERYONE can be a "special interest." Isn't this a "democracy", or at least a republic? Why shouldn't as many voices be able to speak out on their favored issues as possible? Why do certain sides always call folks on the OTHER side "special interests", as if THEY'RE the true citizens' advocates who care about the country rather than a minority's interests only?
The term "special interests" has got to go from our lexicon. It's ridiculous.
There are very few political issues today where the vast majority of people agree. So every group that represents a certain cause is a special interest. But what's wrong with that? Isn't "special" generally a good word? Don't people love to feel special?
DEFINITION OF SPECIAL INTEREST:
An derogatory name for an Interest that one is not especially interested in.
DEFINITION OF A CONSERVATIVE:
A Liberal That's been MUGGED!!
DEFINITION OF A LIBERAL:
A conservative that has been charged with a crime.
That is exactly my thoughts upon receiving my email from "Wendy". Also, made she should get president Obama to release some funds from the unspent stimulus funds...of coarse, those are probably already promised to SCIU.
Judging from most of the comments on this site, y'all could have used Wendy C. for a teacher. Ain't ignorance grand 🙂
