  1. Suki   15 years ago

    Good morning reason!

The moral above is: don't be born in Canada.

    1. Untermensch   15 years ago

Curses, foiled again in my goal to be first. Suki, do you live outside of the United States or are you a vampire?

      1. Suki   15 years ago

I am in all places and in everything. I am eternal.

Good morning Untermensch 🙂 Everything kosher in your world?

    2. Dilema   15 years ago

So here is a question for you.

Is it better to be born in Canada and have to struggle to learn the evils of, and then disregard socialism, or,

Is it better to be born in the U.S. and have to struggle to learn the evils of, and then disregard religion?

      1. Isaac Bartram   15 years ago

You seem to be operating under the misapprehension that the is no socialism in the United States and that there is no religion in Canada.

The most frequently heard justification for socialism in Canada is the Biblical admonition that you are your brother's keeper.

        1. Dilema   15 years ago

Nope, not suffer under that misapprehension:

Infact was raised a Christian in Canada, so am well aware of your point.

Just as an overwhelming broad generalization, it appears that the dominant burden put on the young minds of United States Citizens is Religion. They are far more well versed in the evils of Communism, etc. However, it sneaks in, based on the moral premise, as you stated, of "you are your brothers keeper".

In Canada, again, as a broad generalization, religious fundamentalism is less prevalent, due to the acceptance of multi-multiculturalism, and instead, it is these secular teachings of socialism, or left wing "environmentalism" that seem to dominate the general culture.

So basically, Suki's comment had me wondering, what burden would be psychologically, and philosophically easiest to free oneself from.

I thought the readers of reason may have some interesting opinions on this.

          1. Suki   14 years ago

            Thought provoking, quite.

  2. ?   15 years ago

It left me on the edge of my seat, wondering: Will Part II ever get around to having a point?

    1. Suki   15 years ago

What's wrong with you? If they get to the point in Part II nobody will read Part III: I.M.P. Goes to Gaza.

      1. ?   15 years ago

Oh boy! And don't forget: Ayn Rand hasn't yet made an appearance. That panel should be chock full of yucks!

        1. Suki   15 years ago

Get the corkscrew ready for the Virginia Postrel cameo.

  3. rctl   15 years ago

    Free kosher dills for everyone!

  4. Alan Vanneman   15 years ago

Forget the "abbreviated" bullshit. We want the real deal! Here's hoping for a ten-parter! I love learning about forgotten libertarian heroines whose lives came to nothing!

    1. ?   15 years ago

      libertarian heroines

That's hero worship? Seems like standard Reason snark to me.

    2. The Angry Optimist   15 years ago

Better a ten-parter about Paterson than a disjointed, nonsensical story about Holmes, complete with awkward sex scenes.

      1. Alan Vanneman   15 years ago

You read the book! No wonder you're angry!

        1. The Angry Optimist   15 years ago

          well-played.

  5. Man of the New Normal   15 years ago

I thought this strip would somehow incorporate Kerry's yacht, Isabel.

    1. Suki   15 years ago

That's after Vietnam in "I.M.P goes to RI".

      1. DADIODADDY   15 years ago

I thoughtit was in "Isabel Paterson and her all girl electric orchestra"

  6. SugarFree   15 years ago

We have a Gutzon Borglum sculpture in our lobby. Too early to have been worked on by Paterson, though.

  7. mr simple   15 years ago

So this woman lived a life and things happened, huh? That's so interesting.

    1. The Angry Optimist   15 years ago

Not everything that is written is written for you.

      1. Suki   15 years ago

        +1

      2. Citizen Nothing   15 years ago

Funny. At my newspaper we seem to write everything for "Mr. Simple."
Then we wonder why the industry is dying.

        1. Mr. Simple   15 years ago

I didn't get my paper today, dammit!

    2. Les   15 years ago

Actually, this woman lived a life when women had a fraction of the rights and respect that men did and she prevailed while showing more independence and courage than most of the men of her time and probable even now, a hundred years later. So, it is pretty interesting, if you like stories of remarkable, complex people.

      1. DADIODADDY   15 years ago

        douche

  8. Citizen Nothing   15 years ago

Bravo, Bagge. Paterson's story is one that should be known by far more people.
(And isn't it time for a fucking eclipse or something?)

  9. Colin   15 years ago

    Very nice.

Maybe he tackle Rose Wilder and Zora Neale Hurston next.

    1. Peter Bagge   15 years ago

      That is my intention, yes.

  10. Reformed Republican   15 years ago

Just look on the bright side. It is not a Chip Bok Friday Funny.

  11. Justin Raimondo   15 years ago

  12. Tim   15 years ago

Who was this woman? Why should I care?

    1. Tim   15 years ago

Let me help you with your case of The Dumb:

        Isabel Paterson, Reason Archives

        1. Tim   15 years ago

I live in the moment, and that moment is past.

  13. Tman   15 years ago

Just reading that Wiki link I saw this-

"In her retirement, Paterson declined to enroll in Social Security."

There's a lady with some principles, that's right.

  14. Mike Laursen   15 years ago

    Yay! Bagge is back!

  15. Atilla   15 years ago

    Who?

Did Neil Gaiman write this. I heard he is writing Ann Rand into the next Dr. Who episode.

Gee, that makes about as much sense as a comic strip about somebody nobody has ever heard of . . . . .

    Who is Ann Rand?

    1. Brandybuck   15 years ago

It would be awesome if Ayn Rand became the new companion for the doctor. He would have his bow tie, and she her cigarette holder.

      1. DADIODADDY   15 years ago

who would hold the douche bag?

  16. Homeboy   15 years ago

Hmmm...doesn't Radley Balko's blog mention that some fellow is searching for the most boring article on the internet?

  17. ugg online   15 years ago

Ugg boots (sometimes called uggs or ug boots) have been considered a fashion trend since the early 2000s.The combination of its soft shank and sheepskin interior means that ugg boots are designed for casual, short-term use, and not for situations which require sturdy, protective footwear, as the design emphasis is on style and comfort rather than protecting the feet. While in the boot, the sockless foot is in full contact with the sheepskin lining, thereby maximizing the insulative properties of the boot.
