Our Saudi Allies in Action: Whipping and Imprisoning Men & Women for Mingling
From the AP:
Judicial officials say a Saudi court has convicted four women and 11 men for mingling at a party and sentenced them to flogging and prison terms. The men, who are between 30 and 40 years old, and three of the women, who are under the age of 30, were sentenced to an unspecified number of lashes and one or two year prison terms each.
The fourth woman, a minor, was sentenced to 80 lashes and was not sent to prison.
The ruling was handed down on Tuesday at a court in the northern town of Ha'il.
The officials say the police saw the group partying until dawn last month. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.
Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam that prohibits unrelated men and women from mingling.

Thanks for the reminder that I don't really want to move back to my childhood home.
Well, I'm sure our state department, at the direction of our Dear Leader will give those Saudis a thorough (tongue)lashing in protest. Or was that tonguelicking?
If this were a BDSM party, would they raise or lower the number of lashes given in the sentence?
Win.
Neither, they'd just confiscate the nipple clips and butt plugs.
For their own use.
I think that was implied...
I'm beginning to suspect the prison workers' and lashers' unions are behind Sharia law.
+1
Hey, those union members are the only middle-class Saudi Arabia has.
No, because a lashers' union would want less work and more pay.
If a judge sentences a woman to 100 lashes for drinking water without ice cubes in it, the union gets one man to do each lash in order to avoid repetive stress injuries. Thus, jobs for 100 men. The union knows the importance of safety when flogging someone.
Is the problem the crime, or the punishment?
Have an all night party with alcohol with minors and people may go to jail in this country.
I know that's not really apt, just sayin.
Hey you break the party laws, you pay the piper. 😉

I don't see a reference to any drinking
the middle east is a total shit-hole.
Too bad the world needs what they are selling.
I think I've figured out Sharia law, without ever having to refer to actual documents, the Koran, or Mohammad (Pieces of Eight Be Upon Ye, Arrrrrr). It's so easy.
Think of something that could never, ever possibly be interpreted as Sinful. Let's say, oh, I don't know, your infant daughter was raped by a dozen Muslim men, after breaking in to your home and murdering your atheist wife.
Sharia logic: Flip it! Obviously, the infant's sexuality enticed these good Muslim men to commit lust in their hearts. For that, the infant should be burned alive. Your wife, apostate that she is, also contributed to this unfortunate series of events, and thus may be slaughtered as well.
To recount:
When taking a shit in the middle of a sandy parking lot, wipe the feces off your asshole with your left hand. Fling excess shit away.
When aroused sexually, butt fuck your buddy. No vagina = no problem.
Allahu akbar, motherfuckers. Vijay for congress.
My fondest wish is to see the heads of the House of Saud and senior Wahabbi clerics displayed on spikes in Riyadh.
I despise the whole fucking Saudi power structure, their culture and customs. I also note that politicians of both fucking major parties are quite happy with the status quo of half the populace enslaved.
The K.S.A. makes P.W, Botha's South Africa look downright enlightened.
Why is it our business?
They are sovereign and our culture and concepts do not apply to them.
Thankfully, some Muslims are pushing for change.
I think it's important to remember that judging other people's cultural values through the lens of our own societal norms tends to give a very distorted picture.
Granted, whipping people just for associating with each other may seem barbaric to us, but looking at through the eyes of their culture, it may make perfect sense.
And they must have known the risks! I don't know how many times they have to whip people like this for talking to each other, but civil disobedience is still disobedience.
Everything makes sense when seen through the eyes of the person doing it. If the action didn't make sense to the actor, he wouldn't be taking that action. Ken, your argument boils down to, "Everyone else is the neighborhood is doing it. Why can't I whip a few people?"

This is either extremely dry, and I'm missing it by that much, or that Yucatan heat has fried your brain, Ken
Hold the phone! Maybe I need to rethink everything I thought about freedom, justice and punishment.
Please excuse my cultural eyes and let the beatings and imprisonment continue. Thet'll teach 'em to mingle!
One could justify this as a law that would deter date rape.
One in four women in America are victims of rape. How frequent is rape in Saudi Arabia?
Almost, but you tipped your hand.
Well at least SOME countries know how to keep their women in line.
Their men too.
This is why I was glad when the Houthi rebels in Yemen started killing Saudis (they killed over 100). Death to the House of Saud.
