The Austin Bomber's Anti-"Big Brother" Manifesto?
With all the usual caveats about veracity in breaking news, officials have identified the man who flew a small plane into an Austin building containing Internal Revenue Service offices as Joseph Andrew Stack, are beginning to say they think it was intentional, and lo and behold here's what appears to be a suicide note (UPDATE: try this link):
If you're reading this, you're no doubt asking yourself, "Why did this have to happen?" The simple truth is that it is complicated and has been coming for a long time. The writing process, started many months ago, was intended to be therapy in the face of the looming realization that there isn't enough therapy in the world that can fix what is really broken. […]
We are all taught as children that without laws there would be no society, only anarchy. Sadly, starting at early ages we in this country have been brainwashed to believe that, in return for our dedication and service, our government stands for justice for all. We are further brainwashed to believe that there is freedom in this place, and that we should be ready to lay our lives down for the noble principals represented by its founding fathers. Remember? One of these was "no taxation without representation". I have spent the total years of my adulthood unlearning that crap from only a few years of my childhood. These days anyone who really stands up for that principal is promptly labeled a "crackpot", traitor and worse. […]
Why is it that a handful of thugs and plunderers can commit unthinkable atrocities (and in the case of the GM executives, for scores of years) and when it's time for their gravy train to crash under the weight of their gluttony and overwhelming stupidity, the force of the full federal government has no difficulty coming to their aid within days if not hours? Yet at the same time, the joke we call the American medical system, including the drug and insurance companies, are murdering tens of thousands of people a year and stealing from the corpses and victims they cripple, and this country's leaders don't see this as important as bailing out a few of their vile, rich cronies. Yet, the political "representatives" (thieves, liars, and self-serving scumbags is far more accurate) have endless time to sit around for year after year and debate the state of the "terrible health care proble". It's clear they see no crisis as long as the dead people don't get in the way of their corporate profits rolling in.
Between polemics there are long and confusing personal stories about working as a contract software engineer, maybe running afoul of tax exemption laws affecting churches, losing his retirement a couple of times, lobbying strenuously against the 1986 tax reform bill, taking it on the chin during every major economic calamity of the past two decades, losing one wife, gaining another, having a dispute with his personal CPA, and railing against both communism and capitalism. The ending:
The recent presidential puppet GW Bush and his cronies in their eight years certainly reinforced for all of us that this criticism rings equally true for all of the government. Nothing changes unless there is a body count (unless it is in the interest of the wealthy sows at the government trough). In a government full of hypocrites from top to bottom, life is as cheap as their lies and their self-serving laws.
I know I'm hardly the first one to decide I have had all I can stand. It has always been a myth that people have stopped dying for their freedom in this country, and it isn't limited to the blacks, and poor immigrants. I know there have been countless before me and there are sure to be as many after. But I also know that by not adding my body to the count, I insure nothing will change. I choose to not keep looking over my shoulder at "big brother" while he strips my carcass, I choose not to ignore what is going on all around me, I choose not to pretend that business as usual won't continue; I have just had enough.
I can only hope that the numbers quickly get too big to be white washed and ignored that the American zombies wake up and revolt; it will take nothing less. I would only hope that by striking a nerve that stimulates the inevitable double standard, knee-jerk government reaction that results in more stupid draconian restrictions people wake up and begin to see the pompous political thugs and their mindless minions for what they are. Sadly, though I spent my entire life trying to believe it wasn't so, but violence not only is the answer, it is the only answer. The cruel joke is that the really big chunks of shit at the top have known this all along and have been laughing, at and using this awareness against, fools like me all along.
I saw it written once that the definition of insanity is repeating the same process over and over and expecting the outcome to suddenly be different. I am finally ready to stop this insanity. Well, Mr. Big Brother IRS man, let's try something different; take my pound of flesh and sleep well.
It will be interesting, to say the least, to see which groups of people get blamed for the actions of a single very disturbed man.

"American zombies wake up and revolt"
Zombies of course.
And I didn't know the IRS was harrassing the zomies.
It takes a zombie to catch a zombie.
Perhaps that should be, set a zombie to catch a zombie.
To Catch A Zombie
Hansen: You are free to walk out the door. No, there, the door where you came in.
Mr. President?
Eric Holder's on the phone asking if he can ban airplanes.
My Dem buddy (I can only have one) has already labeled him as a "Teabagger". I read his screed as slightly more lefty than righty (but only slightly).
Maybe more lefty then righty, but certainly not liberal (in the modern sense of course). The liberals have the better case so far to blame libertarians and 'tea baggers'. The smart move would be to try to shift the blame onto anarchist, since everyone can agree that they suck.
Fuck you, anarchists rule. It's just the lack of intellectual consistency on the part of you statist libertarians that keeps us back. If you'd just all accept that the logical conclusion of your beliefs is that all government is rapine, freedom destroying, and wrong, we could rise up and smash the state!
Or buy an island and move there. Whichever.
Well, I am an anarchist (notice my screen name). But, I do recognize that both left (for opposing the state) and right (for opposing exploitation) like to take shits on us. Just saying that since 'libertarians' and 'teabaggers' are likely to take the blame for this one, it would be smart of them to blame anarchist. That way everybody (except us) wins; the right can blame socialism and the left teabaggers/libertarians/anarchist (since they increasingly conflate the three).
If only there was such a thing as anarchy. Unfortunately anarchy results in justice by emotional mob and a de facto government by whoever has the brutality to control the powerless. Think Somalia. I'll take a minimal government with strong limits and an unemotional justice system over anarchy any day and there is nothing inconsistent if one argues that in a theoretical anarchy lacking a formal government structure one would likely be less free than a minimalist state.
If this guy was supposedly so hard up for cash, why did he contribute to Ron Paul?
While there is some truth in his insanity, he went about it the wrong way. dont think its time for a bloddy rebellion yet.
Especially a one man terrorist style bloody rebellion.
At least he picked the right target.
The Congress is responsible for the tax system, and not the collectors they hire.
Randal: So they build another Death Star, right?
Dante: Yeah.
Randal: Now the first one they built was completed and fully operational before the Rebels destroyed it.
Dante: Luke blew it up. Give credit where it's due.
Randal:And the second one was still being built when they blew it up.
Dante: Compliments of Lando Calrissian.
Randal: Something just never sat right with me the second time they destroyed it. I could never put my finger on it-something just wasn't right.
Dante: And you figured it out?
Randal: Well, the thing is, the first Death Star was manned by the Imperial army-storm troopers, dignitaries- the only people onboard were Imperials.
Dante: Basically.
Randal: So when they blew it up, no prob. Evil is punished.
Dante: And the second time around...?
Randal: The second time around, it wasn't even finished yet. They were still under construction.
Dante: So?
Randal: A construction job of that magnitude would require a helluva lot more manpower than the Imperial army had to offer. I'll bet there were independent contractors working on that thing: plumbers, aluminum siders, roofers.
Dante: Not just Imperials, is what you're getting at.
Randal: Exactly. In order to get it built quickly and quietly they'd hire anybody who could do the job. Do you think the average storm trooper knows how to install a toilet main? All they know is killing and white uniforms.
Dante: All right, so even if independent contractors are working on the Death Star, why are you uneasy with its destruction?
Randal: All those innocent contractors hired to do a job were killed- casualties of a war they had nothing to do with. (notices Dante's confusion) All right, look-you're a roofer, and some juicy government contract comes your way; you got the wife and kids and the two-story in suburbia-this is a government contract, which means all sorts of benefits. All of a sudden these left-wing militants blast you with lasers and wipe out everyone within a three-mile radius. You didn't ask for that. You have no personal politics. You're just trying to scrape out a living.
You know, any contractor willing to
work on that Death Star knew the risks. If they were killed, it was their own fault. A roofer listens
to this... (taps his heart) not his wallet.
I'm pretty sure there would been consequences if they had not been willing to work for the emperor.
The Empire doesn't hire contractors. They use clones, droids and robotic machines.
Less chance of union thuggery that way.
What about the Machinists Union?
You think the star wars rebels were left wing???? Un-uh.
> You think the star wars rebels were left wing????
They were A-Wing, B-Wing, X-Wing, and Y-Wing.
Was The Death Star Attack An Inside Job?
http://www.debunking911.com/questions.htm
The drug lords are responsible for the drug problem, and not the drug dealers they hire.
Those damned extremist moderates!
Oh shit, why did he have to be a contract software engineer? If this fucker gets me on a list I'm laying a dookie on his gravestone.
more likely a crackdown on general aviators.
Apparently he was particularly upset about Section 1706. I remember when it was passed. It was a personal, targeted reaming for the entire industry of independent computer consultants, at a time when people needed more advice than ever, due to a lack of standards and an amazing proliferation of technology vendors.
I can understand why he was so torqued about that regulation in particular.
When it passed, people with modest private practices who had been working for a decade or more receiving 1099s were pressured to either sign up under some "body shop" which essentially laundered their compensation (and levied a vigorish on the gross receipts), or had to incorporate, which added to the independents' overhead, in terms of both time and money.
The alternative was seeing one's clients scared off by perceived liability for not doing withholding for people who weren't their employees.
virginia: That's a scary and all-too-possible outcome. General aviation is a favorite scapegoat of class warriors. People hear "airplane" and think Gulfstream, not the Skyhawk or Cherokee that rural folks use to make life more livable when the nearest center of population is 100 miles away.
Thanks for this explanation of the statute.
the joke we call the American medical system, including the drug and insurance companies, are murdering tens of thousands of people a year and stealing from the corpses and victims they cripple,
This isn't exactly standard issue teabagger-speak, is it?
Not exactly but close enough for government and media work. Good God help us. MSNBC is going to be screaming for mass detention and re-education tonight.
Fucking KosKids are already calling it "teabagger terrorism". Is it just me, or are they getting really lazy in how they use the word "teabagger".
They are lazy and desperate. These people never let the facts get in the way of a good narrative. The fact that Tim McVeigh never attended church and had views on foreign policy right out of Noam Chomsky didn't stop them from claiming he was a "right wing Christian terrorist" I am sure Andrew Sullivan has cum in his pants at least three times this afternoon. Thank God the idiot didn't kill more people.
McVeigh was a libertarian atheist who actually took libertarian atheism seriously.
(I kid! I kid!)
+1
Good one, Mad Max. I have always enjoyed your multiplexity.
You mean in the same way that they are "lazy" in using the terms "racist" and "fascist"?
That was fast.
Exactly. I think that this is Liberal/Progressive rage, same as the colleague shooting college professor.
Yeah, practically the whole thing reads like a standard leftist paranoid fantasy.
The hard left in this country has slowly but steadily become mentally unhinged in recent times. I'm not sure precisely what has triggered this disturbing phenomenon, but it seems to have become particularly acute in the last four or five years or so, and the rise to power of Obama has done almost nothing to slow it down.
Bush Derangement Syndrome, of course
These mantras of our would-be overlords are moot since such innovations in medical technology would never have existed without some greedy bastard pushing the shit through at some point. I wonder, if we still used bleeding as a viable health-care technique, would they bleat about the millions killed by such barbaric methods? Now the American Medical Association...if anything, they slow innovation to a crawl. At least, he threw blame around like it was going to be rationed any day.
Wait a minute. I agree with most of his thoughts, and he's a pretty decent writer. So what is the problem?
Well, the problem is that he's a charred, smashed mess in the remains of a building down the street from me, so we can't all rise up and follow him.
Well clearly, that means you're just a paranoid liberal commie socialist who worships at the Alter of Obama.
At least, that's what I've gathered from other comments.
There is a God. And he doesn't like you.
especially for spelling "altar" with an incorrect vowel (guess which one!)
[disclaimer: The following comment is satirical, just like Swift's Modest Proposal but without the Irish angle]
This guy's action shows that he's a libertarian - come on, talking about an oppressive federal government and [a dead giveaway] aiming his attack at that favorite libertarian target, the IRS - what more proof do you need? And the denunciation of the bailouts and the discussion of how the federal government is corrupt and oppressive - right out of the libertarian hymnal!
The only difference between Mr. Stack and other libertarians is that he actually believes in the libertarian principles which others only give lip service to - just like the guy who killed Dr. Tiller is the only guy who took prolife principles seriously.
To paraphrase Jacob Sullum:
"[Flying planes into IRS headquarters] may or may not be a good long-term strategy for [opposing abuses of power by the federal government], but it is hard to see why the use of deadly force is not morally justified, at least in principle, once you accept the premise that [the federal government, specifically including the IRS, is oppressing the people]. . . .
"A [libertarian] position does not require pacifism in the face of [federal oppression]; it allows and arguably demands the use of force in defense of oneself and others. . . .
"It is not clear why [Reason magazine] and the [Cato Institute] reject this argument. Both say they are committed to legal, nonviolent change, but they are hazy as to whether that course is morally mandatory or merely prudent. . . .
". . . does this bad press mean that [Joseph Andrew Stack's] supporters are indeed "crazed militants"?or, as Operation Rescue President Troy Newman puts it, "loons" and "wing nuts"? It seems to me they share the moral premises espoused by other [libertarian] activists but disagree about how best to implement them. Either that, or they take seriously what others only pretend to believe."
I think anyone who flies a plane into an office building is a one off nut, no matter what his beliefs or justifications.
If by 'nut' you mean 'fundamentally mistaken in such a way as to make him either evil or insane (depending on the evidence),' then yes.
One off nuts flying planes into things sank 49 US ships in WWII...
Actually, if you read the manifesto, you see that he is not upset at big government itself but that big government never helps him.
He whines and whines about how the government, big business, his accountant, etc in short anyone but him have screwed him over and refused to help. He whines and whines and whines that government helps out everyone BUT him and his grievance isn't that the government is invasive but that it is not invasive in his favor.
He seemed perfectly happy to feed at the public trough when the military was pumping money into aerospace in southern California and he was pissed off that when the Cold War finished and his gravy train ended that the government didn't charge in a make everything better.
He bitches that he came to Austin and couldn't compete against the business that already existed. Bitching that others outcompete you and that the government should make sure you get a fair shot in business is not a libertarian point of view.
This guy never even had a thought about personal responsibility and self-reliance.
He's not a libertarian/classical-liberal. He's a greedy little piglet who is angry that the bigger piglets pushed him off the teat he felt his by divine right.
exactly. he wants government healthcare, and he wants others pay for it. lefties don't love to pay taxes. lefties love for other people to pay taxes. and quoting the communist creed correctly and the capitalist creed as a caricature is another tell.
He's right that comparative pay is lower here in Austin than it is in Cali (at least, before Cali started turning into a dystopian wasteland). Of course, the cost of living is comparatively even lower than that. Or at least it was until we got flooded with STUPID FUCKING CALIFORNIANS who moved here trying to find work after they trashed their own goddamn state.
Yes, I'm trying to engineer a big Californian trap somewhere just east of El Paso.
I'm with you! Goddamn these Californians.
Better make the Californian trap somewhere in Arizona or NM will have one more reason to hate Texans.
Nuke it from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Beware of New Mexicans (even Neu Mejicans) wanting Texans to make their traps for them.
...railing against both communism and capitalism.
Can you point me to where he rails against communism? I seemed to miss that part.
Last two sentences. "Rails against" probably improper description, but he's clearly critiquing both.
but he's clearly critiquing both.
Noam Chomsky was a pilot?
Noam Chomsky critiqued communism?
Don't get my hopes up, Jamie.
I didn't have a chance to read the entire thing before the page got taken down, but if it was limited to just the last two sentences then I fail to see how regurgitating a shopworn Marx quotation constitutes a critique of communism.
I thought the end, where he sums up communism and capitalism, was a condemnation of both, but maybe I read it wrong.
It's a very obvious attack on crony capitalism, which the writer conflates with free-market economics.
See, I always thought communists liked the phrase "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs." I don't see how repeating that is a condemnation.
I see those last sentences as praise of communism and condemnation of capitalism.
It's a greatly written piece, but come on, don't fly a plane into a building about it.
Also, anyone who calls the Catholic Church a vulgar institution is probably not your typical right-winger.
Ehhh, lots of Christian Righties are evangelical Protestants, and if there's one thing Protestants hate more than Jews, it's Catholics.
Total. Bullshit.
I know that in my Protestant family, Catholicism is not thought highly of.
That's not the same as hate.
My Protestant mother used to really hate Catholics and Mormons.
Then her son (me) become a Mormon. (I got better later on.)
Then she married a Catholic.
So now she's running out of religions to disparage.
There is always me.
...and me!
Shut up, Buddha, you didn't even start a religion.
No one ever brings up me. Apparently I'm not a real religion because I use copyright law instead of the tax code.
Because, you know, in a country where statists claim there is a wall of separation between church and state, a legitimate religion is determined by a tax schedule that's dictated by the state.
Speaking of Statism, there's another religion not represented here.
Early in the last century the KKK sure hated them some Catholics.
So representative of the Protestant demographic as whole!
Last time I checked the Catholics weren't real fond of Jews either - especially the Irish, Polish, and German Catholics.
Anyone who flies their plane into a building is probably not a typical anything. Only the really far out evangelicals engage in much Papist bashing these days.
The recent presidential puppet GW Bush and his cronies in their eight years certainly reinforced for all of us that this criticism rings equally true for all of the government.
Not a "tea-baggerism" either.
Also, anyone who calls the Catholic Church a vulgar institution is probably not your typical right-winger.
Obviously, you did not grow up in a Southern Baptist church. Protestant fundamentalists don't much like the papists.
Nor do feminists.
Or the gays.
So I guess that makes him a dead gay feminist, which means he has 2 things in common with Rachel Maddow and Ellen Degenerous (sp?).
Neither are dead, sadly Rachel Maddow is not. Ellen is funny, so she can live.
Saying Ellen is funny is pretty Degenerous.
sadly Rachel Maddow is not
Don't make fun of Xeones one-night-stand.
One night, indeed. He wouldn't even suck my dick.
I think I'm gonna puke.
Is it her dick or her balls that you object to so strenuously?
You guys leave Randy alone!!
OMG! THAT'S SO HILARIOUS! Because no queers or feminists would ever read Reason or agree with any bit of libertarianism.
You must not come here often.
I'm guessing "doesn't come at all" is what leads to the bitterness. Let it go, Drunk, let it go...
They have toned it down in the last few decades, but growing up Baptist, I heard "Catholics aren't Christians" quite a bit.
I heard that a few weeks ago from my Baptist co-worker. She didn't have the guts to say it to my Catholic co-workers, but whatever.
My mom told me how when she went to college in the 60's, her Protestant roommate couldn't believe how normal and friendly she and her Catholic parents were, since she was raised to believe (and I shit you not, this is what Mom says she said) "Catholics are evil and have horns."
In other words, lots of people are really fucking sheltered and/or stupid.
I have a fucktard uncle (by marriage) that's a Mason and baits my wife about being a Catholic all the time. He's a real charmer. And an idiot considering she hasn't set foot in a Catholic Church in 20 years.
Wow. Who is a Mason anymore? My wife is Catholic and if someone baited her about being one, I think I would kick his ass. And I am not even a Catholic. What the hell is wrong with people?
Wow. Who is a Mason anymore?
Cops. Lots and lots of cops.
Why don't Masons like the Papists?
Depends on which conspiracy theory you prefer... If the Masons really are descended from the Knights Templar, then they hate the church because it suppressed them rather viciously (even if it was under the influence of one of the Anti-Popes.)
But probably it's just because they were a Protestant secret society and hating Catholics was just the style at the time.
I am still waiting to see the Knights of Columbus versus Masons octogenarian rumble.
Oops. Sorry... Clement V was not an Antipope, he just started the Avignon Papacy.
Two of the Avignon Popes, Clement VII and Benedict XIII, were Antipopes. I forgot that not all the Avignon Popes were Anti-fied.
Protestant fundamentalists don't much like the papists.
And the "papists" - especially the eastern liberal ones - don't think too highly of the Protestant fundamentalists either, particularly the southern ones.
It will be interesting, to say the least, to see which groups of people get blamed for the actions of a single very disturbed man.
As always, I blame the Presbyterians.
Yeah, and which groups have been blamed in the press for Amy Bishop's rampage?
She was just a lone nut like the Ft. Hood shooter.
Her haridresser and personal trainer certianly deserve a measure of approbation.
Also, she had three unpublished science fiction novels kicking around, so those fucks at io9 need to take in the neck too.
Her haridresser and personal trainer certianly deserve a measure of approbation.
Hey, garden shears can double as cosmotology equipment! And it's a double write-off if you're also a landscaper!
Didn't someone tell her that the Anne Rice look is so 1998?
I bet her brother would have.
Or did.
Dungeons and Dragons.
I can't tell you how many times I broke up a faculty meeting of Gelatinous Cubes with a handgun.
If only.
I confess that at times sitting in one of those eternal purgatorial meetings that in my minds eye the other participants transmogrified into various monster manual beasties and I thought:
"One good vorpal sword would fix most of our problems."
That is a blast from the past. Back in the 80s, before there was heavy metal inspired suicide, there was Dungeons and Dragons inspired murder.
That Tom Hanks was such a nice boy before he started playing that game.
Yo, fuck Rona Jaffe.
Hey, ass spelunker, I'm being baptized into the Presbyterian church this summer. Don't make me sic Jesus on your sphincter.
As a lifelong Presbyterian, I welcome you to the club, and remind you of our motto:
Presbyterianism: almost like having no religion at all!
I knew it was the church for me when the pastor lent me his Keith Jarret jazz piano collection, then said, "these will make you cum in your pants."
He must know my pastor! What are the odds!
Welcome, JK, welcome...
I don't think I could post a suicide note at a social media site. If you do it and then chicken out, you look like a total ass.
Can you imagine how savage the mocking comments would be?
It's already taken down.
As far as any kind of political stance might be gleaned from the manifesto, it kind of reminded me of the old man in Slacker that becomes friends with the guy trying to rob his house and complains about anarchists not having the balls to plant bombs anymore.
Actually it reminds of of Michael Douglas in "Falling Down".
Economically unviable!
Uhhh ... "NOT ECONOMICALLY VIABLE" ... that's the rallying cry. Don't fuck with me when it comes to movie trivia.
I bow before your eruditedness.
I have had all I can stand.
"and I can't stands no more!"
I blame Popeye.
Come to think of it, he did extend an aweful lot of unqualified credit to Blimpy...
Fox News' coverage of this is like watching the news eqivilent of Reno 911. Megan Kelly's botoxed face is almost showing movement.
Sorry but Megan Kelly needs no botox and won't for some time. She's babeulicious. She's atcually pretty bright too.
Kelly's mine, JR - move along to one of the other blonde bimbettes.
You're not very bright if you think a 40-year-old looks like that naturally.
I don't think I could post a suicide note at a social media site.
You wouldn't have to worry about finding somebody to proofread it for you.
Just wait for all the bat shit response on the need to crack down on general aviation now. I can see it - prove you haven't written a suicide note, get the full body scan, must have a govt approved person along to shoot you if you stray, mandatory full flight plans with shoot downs if you deviate, yadda, yadda, yadda.
I can sense the stupidity coming down on the poor peons who like to fly a cessna.
Yes. And then we can send stimulus money to places like Wichita Kansas who see their industry destroyed thanks to it.
A broken clock tells perfect time twice a day.
What if "broken" means always runs a little slow?
Not under an infinity-reductionist model, where there is no such thing as aligning events.
Henceforth, every general aviation flight will have to have an Air Marshal on board.
Dude, you should have carried a torpedo with you . . .
Something isn't adding up here. The plane-into-building stunt is not a viable method of protest for someone who thinks like that writer, who can construct a somewhat cogent, if emotional, argument that remains generally focused. Mark this, new information will surface, true or not, that indicates what really went on there. They current storyline just isn't gonna fly...
The building did house the IRS. Yeah, flying a plane into it seems pretty stupid. But, there is no accounting for insanity.
Plenty of violent criminals can write a pretty paragraph.
But not pretty enough to get tenure in Alabama.
LOL, she was a biology professor!
Or get Norman Mailer to spring them from the hoosegow.

Obviously this guy was murdered and this incident was staged by the same guys that blew up the World Trade Center.
Probably Mossad. With the assistance of Jesuits.
It was all done to cover up Trig's paternity. You know Palin was in Texas last week campaigning for Rick Perry. A coincidence? I think not. I am sure Andrew Sullivan is on it right now.
I was thinking more like there must have been booze involved.
Buildings don't just burn like that. It must have been an inside job!
did any jews show up for work today?
Its clear the Bush administration planted explosives in the building.
Bush blowing up the IRS? I'm liking him more each and every day.
I sure miss him.
http://billstclair.com/blog/im.....me-yet.jpg
PATSY!
As much as anything, it made me think of the Unabomber.
No question at all that this will be hung on the Tea Party.
Just like the guy who shot the guard at the Holocaust museum. Next on his list was the Weekly Standard. But he was a NEOCON Teabagger.
Trying to kill innocent people--and yes, IRS employees are innocent--is evil and whacked out. Screw him.
Screw him? I though only Warty has sex with the charred and dis-articulated corpses of domestic terrorist.
You learn something new every day.
Unlike Warty who likes his corpses freshly killed and intact, Pro prefers them partially dismembered and charred. To each his own I guess.
Just as a matter of grammatical construction, the sentence, "Screw him" was directed at the audience. Thus, the implied meaning of the words was, roughly "You screw him."
So am I a bad guy then for sympathizing with him somewhat?
Depends. Can you fly?
You know Nathan Petrelli? That's me.
I meant a plane.
A distinction without a difference.
And really, I'm Sylar.
Are you still watching Heroes Epi? I think I've given up on it. 5 shows in the DVR queue and no desire to watch them.
I am. It's still ok.
Never watched it.
This season has bored me to tears.
It got pretty boring for a while, granted. It picks up again, though.
Episiarch|2.18.10 @ 3:47PM|#
I am. It's still ok.
You just lost half your "has taste" points.
You're dead?
"but when he spoke in an ordinary voice he sounded pompous and faggy to them."
and yes, IRS employees are innocent
Of what? Sex with snakes? They're not innocent of harming people without cause, I can tell you that with sad assurance.
So they deserve death?
When you make your living hurting people and stealing their stuff, you shouldn't be real surprised if someone decides to hurt you back.
Can you fly?
Don't answer him Joel, it's a trick! He'll cut your head open and steal your power!
Foiled again!
In any event, my point was that the IRS rank and file, whatever guilt they share for helping to oppress the rest of us, don't deserve to be murdered by some wackjob.
But murder by a non-whackjob would be OK?
I'm just clarifying...
I also left a gap for IRS management, which was also not intended. What do you expect from a blog commenter?
I like your flexibility, PL
I'm an attorney. I can wrap my tongue around my head.
Nobody stole anything from you. If you don't like paying taxes, move to the USVI. Don't try to justify killing some desk jockey doing what he's paid to do. Deadbeat crybaby.
Well, now, let's not get hasty. "My taxes, love them or leave them" is hardly a sentiment shared by most Americans.
The dude should've publicly and noisily refused to pay his taxes. With a hunger strike after he was jailed. Now that might've done some good.
Trying to kill innocent people--and yes, IRS employees are innocent--is evil and whacked out.
Of course they're innocent! "They're just following orders." Right?
It will be interesting, to say the least, to see which groups of people get blamed for the actions of a single very disturbed man.
As usual, that will depend greatly upon who's pointing the finger.
Oh, I think just about every group is going take a hand at stirring this pot.
ie, "Aren't most low-level bureaucrats either black or hispanic? He was a racist!!!"
A commenter to the Wall Street Journal's article has already called the guy a government-hating, racist, teabagger.
So, any wagers on how long it will take for Jack Thompson to blame it on violent video games?
The Throwin' Samoan?
No, it's clearly Marilyn Manson's fault.
Every commenter at MSNBC's story on this event is calling the guy a "teabagger", with the very small exception of those who actually read his suicide note.
Amazing that I'm not amazed.
I predict that Tea Partiers will get the blame, libertarians will take flack, and statists of all stripes will party down for a few days or weeks.
The hell of it is, pretty much everyone i know, Republican, Democrat, whatever, has said many of the exact same things as Stack's note. If his mania had manifested itself in a drive for political power rather than a suicidal lashing out, he could have been John's vaunted centrist candidate.
What centrist candidate?
You are correct though in that if he had taken his sociopathic urges and channeled them into public service, he probably would have gone far. It is not like sociopaths don't have a great track record in politics or anything.
Uh, X, we all know that only people who dislike overarching government commit violent acts. I mean, there has never been a case of left-wing or right wing statist violence. No, not ever.
Nope. Not one.
In the spirit of mindlessly pointing fingers, I suppose its too much to ask of our vaunted press to find out if he was a registered member of a political party.
I don't think they'll bother unless the know he's a McCain supporter.
Even if they do, they won't let things like facts get in the way. Lee Harvey Oswald was a radical right winger. The fact that he was a committed communist who once defected to Russia and was constantly pissed off about the US treatment of Castro was immaterial.
See, the storyline goes
Public building or Democrat attacked = RIGHT WING TERRORIST
Business or Republican attacked = LEFT WING TERRORIST
get with the "pre-written" program...
Actually it's more like:
Business or Republican attacked = ISLAMIC TERRORIST
What centrist candidate?
The mythical one you and MNG were going on about the other day. I'm not going to dig up the link.
"I predict that Tea Partiers will get the blame"
Your vision of the future has already come to pass.
God help every private pilot out there. You're taking it up the ass tomorrow. Twice if you have ever uttered anti-government rhetoric. And if you're libertarian, you better sell your plane.
Your vision of the future has already come to pass.
On an even wider scale in the days to come, though. Probably even from the mouths of a handful of Congressthings.
If only the TSA had swabbed his hands before take-off.
Seems to me one of his biggest problems was about being treated as an independent contractor when he wanted to be treated as an employee. The difference being that he wouldn't have to pay out of pocket certain employee taxes.
It was his employer screwing him when they didn't pay him the taxes they had previously been paying on his behalf (once he got labeled an independent contractor). He should have got a raise to compensate.
Joe didn't understand that those numbers on an employee paycheck entitled "employer contributions" are really a part of your pay. If those numbers are reduced, it's a paycut by your employer.
He crashed a plane into the wrong building. It wasn't the IRS screwing him.
Yes, it was. Nobody is obligated to give you a job nor are you entitled to one, but the IRS screws you no matter what.
Well in the big picture the IRS is screwing us all. Yes, I agree.
But what I am saying is that by getting reclassified, his employer took advantage of him by not increasing his pay to compensate. They reduced a benefit to him and he didn't realize it (he was stating his employer lobbied for such a change I think).
It's like national healthcare. Those of us who are employees with benefits that include employer paid healthcare might lose out if national healthcare were passed. We'd lose the amount our employer was paying towards healthcare and we'd have to make it up by paying a new tax.
They might be nice and pay you directly the amount they used to pay to the insurance company or they might not. If they don't they have reduced your pay.
It wasn't the IRS screwing him.
However, the bastards who voted for the 16th Amendment are all dead.
Anyone else see this? It is a bit inside baseball. But it is pretty damn funny when one of the condescensity turns out to be basically a white trash deadbeat dad.
http://www.nydailynews.com/gos.....drama.html
Yo, fuck Joseph Andrew Stack!
The Congress is responsible for the tax system, and not the collectors they hire.
The Godwin churned inside him; he could literally hear its slow, stinging, gurgling rise into the back of his throat. His eyes watered. his nose burned. And yet, he strove to constrain it, his whole body straining with the effort. A little brown-shirted demon sat on his shoulder and snickered in his ear, "G'wan, ya SISSY! Ya know ya wanna!"
It is Bush's fault. I inherited this small plane crash from Bush.
The key to understanding this guy is to grasp the staggering reach of his narcissism and self-absorbtion.
People who carry out these types of crimes have an incredibly invariant profile. It's always the same in every single one of these crimes.
(1) They have a seriously inflated sense of their own competence. They believe they are in the top 1% when they are usually merely average or sub par. Since they believe they deserve the top rewards but only get the average rewards, they constantly believe themselves cheated out of money, jobs and status.
(2) They are incapable of acknowledging responsibility for anything negative that happens to them whereas positive events are entirely their own doing. Combined with (1) this leads them to the logical conclusion that vast forces are conspiring against them. In this case, he refused to accept responsibility for complying with the tax code (whether he agreed with it or not, he should have know of and planned for the consequences.)
(3) Any and all events are interpreted solely through the lense of how it affects them. Great sweeping events only have context for them and them alone. In this case, he sees the end of the Cold War, the dot com bust, 9/11 and the recent collapse solely in terms of how the affected him. He's not upset that the government spent money to offset economic woes, he's upset that the government didn't spend money on him personally.
(4) He will prove to have long track record of "anger control" issues and he will have lashed out at people physically before. There is a good likelihood he abused his wives or partners.
So at the end he has constructed this little story in which the wonderful fantastic nearly flawless individual he believes himself to be is constantly cheated, abandoned and conspired against. He who is utterly blameless in all things is nevertheless crushed down by the injustice of the world . Presented with two choices (A) admit his short comings, redress his actions and start over or (B) kill as many people as he can while self-murdering to escape the consequences of his own actions...
... he chose (B) because that was the most selfish action he could take.
That is the key to the political pattern in his rant. At every juncture, he chooses the political view that is the most individually selfish. When he must contribute to the collective via taxes he creates a rationale for why he personally doesn't have to pay taxes. When he wants help from the collective, he whines that the collective does not take tax money from others and give it to him. He wants the government to leave him alone in business but then he wants the government to protect him from competition.
These people are the very definition of evil. They often reflect some part of every political belief because every political belief has some piece that can be used to be selfish and evil. They take only the bad and none of the good from every ideology.
Exactly
Isn't being selfish a virtue?
I think we've found who will ultimately be blamed:
Ayn Rand!!
No, openly acknowledging that you operate based on enlightened self-interest is good.
Using a pretension of altruism as camouflage for dominating and coercing other human beings, is evil.
The "selfishness" that Randians and others extol is not true selfishness but merely the lack of fake altruism and power lust. They say, "If using the violent power of the state to take from others for my own benefit is unselfish, then I prefer to be selfish."
It has to be rational, CZ. That means that it has to be epistemically aligned with facts (i.e. -- the evidences of reality, and this alignment is what constitutes "truth") from which to abstract values. Arguably, a sociopath is "selfish", but his values selections vary sharply from reality -- which is what makes it ultimately impossible for him to survive in a rational culture -- and that's not what Rand outlined. At all.
BINGO. 'Nuff said.
A really nicely done analysis. Thank you!
Fuck, except for number 4, you've described my oldest son.
That just just means he is good at hiding his plans and is patient. But nothing to worry about I am sure.
That just just means he is good at hiding his plans and is patient. But nothing to worry about I am sure.
Hell, Shannon described me!
Err, except for (4). Really. You can't prove it anyway!
Dad?
Ha ProL! My daughter pulls down all 4 easily. My kid wins!
Good luck with that, JW. Keep your daughter away from airplanes and faculty meetings.
She's 11 now. It's going to be a loooooong and painful 7 years (5, with the option of involuntary emancipation). Fortunately, I know how to self-medicate.
Sad part is how prevalent these personality traits are becoming.
One and two describe every liberal I know and three describes most republicans I've met.
It is the product of the self esteem movement in schools. It used to be schools taught humility and perseverance. Now they teach everyone how special they are. Is it any surprise we now have three generations of narcissists running around?
Bullshit.
Bam!
Every myth has a grain of truth.
It's a good thing we have plane control in this country . . .
+1
+2
If only those IRS agents had planes too, they could of prevented this.
They do. It's the 104th Squadron, "The Helldriver Accountants" Squadron motto, "Audits from Above!"
It's a good thing we have plane control in this country . . .
I'm assuming he hit what he was aiming at.

Anyone catch the 1.4% monthly inflation number for December? Welcome to the 1970s and stagflation. When do I get my "Whip Inflation Now" button?
And why is that whenever a bad jobs report comes out now that the media calls it "unexpected"? Not a single one of them has surprised me in the least.
Yeah, it is always unexpectedly. I like you am never surprised. Maybe after a year of being surprised every month, the media might want to adjust their expectations.
Yeah, it is always unexpectedly. I like you am never surprised. Maybe after a year of being surprised every month, the media might want to adjust their expectations.
Cause Obama's got a patent on "unprecedented"
It's Bush's fault
@ Shannon Love
*nods head approvingly*
"Terrorist", "disturbed individual", "psycho whack job" - all of these seem unlikely given the just-transcribed last words of the pilot to a nearby control tower:
"Hold my beer....I'm gonna try sumthin..."
which groups of people get blamed
All of us, because we're too free. Several cable-news sites today harped on the fact that Stack didn't file a flight plan. Got that? He just started up his own plane and took off! Without telling anyone!
We also need to get under control these people who drive thier cars around without notifying their state's DOT. This must no longer be allowed.
Can't wait to see Olbermann's take on this tonight. At this very moment, his sycophantic minions at MSNBC are scurrying about, desperately seeking what they hope will be the smoking gun that proves Stack was a Tea-Bagger.
Suck it, peasants.
In my city, when Bush visited, they shut down the bus service during the evening rush hour. Man did that suck.
That's dumb - they just needed to keep Dennis Hopper away from them and everything would have been fine.
When Bush came to speak at my college, I missed most of a major midterm. Secret Service all over the place, and they would not let me onto campus. The only reason I got a 50 instead of a 0 was because I was able to sneak onto campus via the unguarded parking garage and catch the last 15 minutes of class. Even with the POTUS on the line, it's still mostly security theater.
"It will be interesting, to say the least, to see which groups of people get blamed for the actions of a single very disturbed man.
Both of the major parties will agree it's the tea party's fault. ...as sure as the sun will rise tomorrow.
The Democrats will blame the Republicans for opposing what Obama's trying to do, and the Republicans will blame the "tea baggers" for leading well meaning people astray. ...and then they'll go back to squandering our money.
...and crackpots will still be nuts.
Here's another example that has ripped off millions of people for several decades, to the tune of 10s of billions of dollars:
Amway is a scam, and here's why: Amway pays out as little money as they can get away with, so they support the higher level IBOs ripping off their downline via the tool scam.
As a result, about 99% of IBOs operate at a net loss, while the top 1% make several TIMES more from their Amway tool scam than from the Amway products. This was made illegal in the UK in 2008, but our FTC is unable to pull their heads out of their butts to stop it here.
Read about it on my blog, I suggest you start here: http://tiny.cc/D5oJh and forward the information to everyone you know, so they don't get scammed.
The IRS is evil evil evil,
they are robbers that terrorize the American public.
Regardless of the pilots political beliefs, he did attack the right bad guy.
Yeah, I don't want to see any terrorist attacks on anybody, but if it had to be somebody...
The IRS isn't one of my favorites either.
He was an idiot, the IRS are just poor schmuck clerks. They are not the "right bad guy".
But his note was refreshing, the first true observations on politics since Claire Wolfe.
From his rant:
"The communist creed: From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.
The capitalist creed: From each according to his gullibility, to each according to his greed."
I guess you Ayn Rand types were too busy kissing smokestacks to notice that you are just another bunch of useful idiots in the power elite's machinations.
Stockpile ammo and MREs, its coming, but in 200 years.
Yeah, they are poor schmucks, the same way the mafias muscle are poor schmucks. They still carry guns, and do the actual intimidating of the public.
"The communist creed: From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.
The capitalist creed: From each according to his gullibility, to each according to his greed."
Yeah, Welch, I think you left an important part off at the end there...
He ends the rant with what amounts to a complete rejection of capitalism and an warm embrace of Communism 101.
Just 'cause he hates the IRS doesn't make him like the rest...
It really does make you wonder why an apparently socialist would hate the IRS so much, or, rather, why someone who hated the IRS so much would be an ideological socialist...
...but then it's entirely possible that he was a nutcase!
This may be what happens to ideological socialists after they've had their dreams popped by real life encounters with the IRS!
So I blame the Obama fanatics! He's obviously one of theirs.
Wait a minute......was this his own plane that he crashed? I didn't realize that one could afford such a thing while being trampled by the jackboots of tax collectors. Also, if any additional deaths are reported will Fox start referring to him as a "homicide pilot"?
Yeah, obviously, if you own your own plane, then the IRS must have treated you fairly and you couldn't possibly be overtaxed...
Sorry, I sometimes don't get the humor, obviously you must have been making fun of someone who would say something like that.
No, I was directing my ire toward the guy that apparently spent years penning a screed about how destitute the IRS has made him before crashing his OWN DAMN PLANE into a building. What's not to get? If you're looking for some kind of heroic tax underdog to put on a pedestal, I would suggest you consider someone that hasn't tried to take people's lives. All you'll find in Joe Stack is a self-aggrandizing sociopath.
Yeah, that's what I was lookin' for.
...and everyone with more money that me shouldn't complain about how much the government rips them off. ...or something.
There's some kind of twisted logic there, I'm sure. It has to do with poster boys and who deserves to complain. ...and how that should either only be people less fortunate than me, or people who make good poster boys...
Believe me, I get it. You made an excellent point. ...to someone, I'm sure.
So are you saying that his relative financial straits (whatever it may have been) was enough to justify attempted murder?
He bought the plane with the money he didn't pay in taxes... But yeah, for a guy talking in his suicide note about being broke all the time and unemployed or trampled on by the oppressive price-setting oligarchy, I was wondering the same thing.
It is rather striking, these liberals all goin' off at the same time for various slights. It's always the kooks that go over the edge first, but that doesn't mean there isn't something bigger going on over there...
A crisis on the far left, maybe? Is this what happens when the kooks over there find their hero in power but still have to come to terms with reality?
Sorry, Ken. There's nothing bigger going on here. In fact it is probably much, much smaller. Try to come back down to reality for just long enough to consider that perhaps Stack just wasn't cut out to be an entrepreneur. Perhaps it isn't the IRS that brought him to his knees but rather the simple fact that nobody was buying what he was selling. Did you entertain that possibility at all before shaking your fist at the sky? Did you consider that despite possibly being a brilliant engineer, Stack was a lousy businessman?
Here's a fairly astute discussion of the IRS gripes in the manifesto:
http://moneywatch.bnet.com/sav.....-irs/1543/
It kind of sounds like he got on the shit list early and then got deeper and deeper into trouble and eventually felt like going out with a bang was his only option.
What's really sad is that he probably had some legitimate gripes and felt like the system was rigged against him, which, to be perfectly fair, it totally is, just like it's rigged against all of us.
People who loudly complain about income taxes are just ignored or dismissed as cranks, except when they do something spectacular like this, and then they get scorned and their acting out is taken as a refutation of their argument and proof that they were just always crazy to start with.
I will stop there before this gets any deeper. Suffice to say, the more i think about the whole concept of an income tax, and especially the way it is administered in this country, the more distressed I become. The whole thing is troubling on many philosophical levels to me.
FWIW - in no way am I condoning what he did... I'm just saying that buried within that note are some legitimate gripes about the IRS and the income tax, and I wish more Americans would have the wherewithal to sit down and ponder all of the implications of it all instead of just accepting it as another fact of life. The whole concept is just insidious when you think about it in the context of the founding principles and the way it enables all kinds of political corruption.
Why is it so hard for our elected saviors of hope, change, and family values to grasp that if "sin taxes" create a disincentive to consume a thing, that income taxes might have some analogous effect on work?
Oh, sorry, I was in a sleep-deprived twilight of logical consistency. Never mind.
If this guy was a teabagger terrorist, as some on the Left are saying, you would think he would have mentioned Obama, Pelosi and Reid at least once, with venom. The only politicians he fingered, Bush and Moynihan, are now out of power. Frankly he just sounds like a very dissatisfied populist who hates both sides (government and corporations, Left and Right), and he said that he had seen "no politician" who cared about his interests. Thus he's probably not a hardcore Ron Paul fan, unless he was trying to avoid the embarrassment this would cause to any politicians he actually liked.
By the way, the "take my pound of flesh and sleep well" has to be one of the most poetic phrases I've heard in a long time.
Personally I find his actions highly despicable. Even if he targeted the democratically elected politicians in power or his specific tax collector, it should be condemned, but especially targeting random innocent low-level bureaucrats who are just doing their jobs and were not personally responsible for the policies that cause his hardships.
By the way, if it were a Muslim flying the plane, even with the exact same gripes and motives, the conservative talk show hosts would be thundering on about how PC everyone is for not calling him a terrorist and how this is like 9-11 version 2. Then again, the government might have already revoked the flying licenses of all Muslims, so...
All so interested in the man and not in the act. I celebrate the latter and don't care about the former.
By the way, Shannon Love's arrogant armchair analysis was particularly revolting, no matter how many high-fives she got for it. Has she met Stack, or does she just get primo points for being an "expert" blowhard?
Uh, Shannon Love is a dude, dude.
Oh. I love an instructive moment.
To all the above, cowardly, gutless, ignorant critics of Joseph Stack:
May you rot in hell for all eternity, you worthless, state-worshiping, middle class, ineffectual scum!
Where the fuck do you get off, by attacking, belittling and smearing your better?!
And you Billy Beck, of all people you... on you motherfucking blog, endorsing a conceptually vacuous, gimmicky analysis/projection, pop-psychology type, some clueless Shannon Love; Cut it out! The guy outdid you -- learn to live with it... better yet, pay your respects!
And as for the management's 'comments' around here... well, I guess you're just mutating along the lines of least resistance... in the interest of shitty, pragmatic survival... no doubt!
DISGUSTING, the lot of you!
'Reason,' my ass!
Fucking deceptive, shallow phonies!
Where the fuck do you get off, by attacking, belittling and smearing your better?!
Jeeze, you're right. What's wrong with me for not hero worshiping a guy that torched his house with his wife and child inside? I'd better reexamine my entire value system.
Bullshit! No wife and no child inside.
The guy outdid you -- learn to live with it... better yet, pay your respects!
Okay, the next question: mate, how exactly did he outdo anyone in anything except body count?
Reading from your spittle-flecked ranting, I'm guessing that you're a troll and trying to punk us. On the off chance that you're serious, you sound a hop and a skip away from pulling a Stack yourself. So as a general rule, there's better ways to deny government the fruits of your labor than pulling your own off switch.
You're welcome, I'm just here to help.
Don't attempt to help. It's self-evident you're not qualified, not by a long shot.
The guy outdid you -- learn to live with it... better yet, pay your respects!

No, "Ancap": that man goes to his fate without my respect. He was a very sadly confused individual without principles that I can admire.
It doesn't matter whether you like it or not.
I think you should reconsider. Either that, or go back to studying the ITOE. He also lived by his principles. Pretty decent ones at that. (Even if he didn't articulate them, to your lofty standards.) Which I might add, must be the same kind of lofty standards, that got you to endorse that piece of trash by Shannon Love, right?
P.S. And this time, I'll overlook your backhanded "Ancap"
Don't do it again. Thanks.
What a bizarre thread this turned out to be.
You crack me up!
😉
This guy needed an editor. Should have called me. The whole manifesto can be said in:
"...We are... brainwashed to believe that there is freedom in this place, and that we should be ready to lay our lives down for the noble [principles] represented by its founding fathers. Remember? One of these was "no taxation without representation"... These days anyone who really stands up for that [principle] is promptly labeled a "crackpot", traitor and worse... I know I'm hardly the first one to decide I have had all [that] I can stand. It [is] myth that people have stopped dying for their freedom in this country... I know there have been countless before me and there are sure to be as many after. But I also know that by not adding my body to the count, I insure nothing will change. I choose to not keep looking over my shoulder at "big brother" while he strips my carcass[.] I choose not to ignore what is going on... around me, I choose not to pretend that business as usual won't continue; I have just had enough... I can only hope that the numbers quickly get too big to be [whitewashed] and ignored [-] that the American zombies wake up and revolt; it will take nothing less. I would only hope that [in] striking a nerve that stimulates the inevitable double standard, knee-jerk government reaction [resulting/which results] in more stupid draconian restrictions[,] people [will] wake up and begin to see the pompous political thugs and their mindless minions for what they are. Sadly, though I spent my entire life trying to believe it wasn't so... violence... is the answer[;] it is the only answer. The cruel joke is that the really big chunks of shit at the top have known this all along and have been laughing... at and using [the awareness of this] against... fools like me".
Faucets will also need to be installed on a sink and the components for faucets are also considered plumbing supplies.
