When You've Lost Greenpeace …
The Times (London) is reporting that the head of Greenpeace in the U.K. is calling for the resignation of Rajendra Pachauri. chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Why? Because Pachauri stonewalled when he learned the assertion in the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report that man-made global warming would melt away Himalayan glaciers by 2035 was a major error. As the Times reports:
John Sauven, director of Greenpeace UK , said that Dr Pachauri should have acted as soon as he had been informed of the error, even though issuing a correction would have embarrassed the IPCC on the eve of the Copenhagen climate summit.
A journalist working for Science had told Dr Pachauri several times late last year that glaciologists had refuted the IPCC claim that Himalayan glaciers would disappear by 2035. Dr Pachauri refused to address the problem, saying: "I don't have anything to add on glaciers." He suggested that the error would not be corrected until 2013 or 2014, when the IPCC next reported.
The IPCC issued a correction and apology on January 20, three days after the error had made global headlines. Mr Sauven said: "Mistakes will always be made but it's how you handle those mistakes which affects the credibility of the institution. Pachauri should have put his hand up and said 'we made a mistake'. It's in these situations that your character and judgment is tested. Do you make the right judgment call? He clearly didn't."
The IPCC needed a new chairman who would hold public confidence by introducing more rigorous procedures, Mr Sauven said. "The IPCC needs to regain credibility. Is that going to happen with Pachauri [as chairman]? I don't think so. We need someone held in high regard who has extremely good judgment and is seen by the global public as someone on their side.
"If we get a new person in with an open mind, prepared to fundamentally review how the IPCC works, we would regain confidence in the organisation."
Let's give Sauven points for integrity, but it will take a lot more than replacing Pachauri to restore confidence in the IPCC, beginning with the adoption of much more open process for evaluating scientific evidence. In the meantime, according to the Times, Pachuari says that he will stay the course, telling…
…Indian television at the weekend that he believed attacks on him were being orchestrated by companies facing lower profits because of actions against climate change recommended by the IPCC.He added: "My credibility has been established because I was re-elected chairman in 2008 by all the countries of the world. They must have been satisfied with what I did in terms of the fourth assessment report [published in 2007] because they have given me the mandate of completing the fifth assessment report [[to be released over 2013 and 2014] which I intend doing."
Given the number of errors and sloppy sourcing being uncovered in the Fourth Assessment Report, one wonders how long Pachuari's "mandate" will last?
Go here for the Times story.

I want more of their tears. More.
Ask and you shall receive. This is just the beginning.
Every once and a while, us cynics and skeptics get a gift. It's rare, and we forget that it happens, but it does. This is one. Spitzer was the one before this one.
Yes. We must treasure all that this will give us. Delicious.
WHERE THE FUCK IS MNG?
Over here on his other handle.
John, your OCD attention whoring is getting kind of stale.
MNG, stop calling me John.
Wow, Suki accusing someone else of being a sockpuppet? Now I've really seen it all!
Don't you mean . . . LoneSuki?
Who released that ball from your mouth harness NS?
Ah grasshoppa' . . . I'm in full blown ZEN mode. I have overcome my physical limitations. There was no mouth harness.
You think I don't know what you are trying to pull? No paddle for you!
Bailed like joe. He can't defend his position the Left/Democrats are better on free speech and civil liberties anymore.
I guess he got tired of having to facilely equate skepticism to Piltdown Man. That takes effort, man, and frankly, I wouldn't want to be in the AGW defense business right now.
glaciologists had refuted the IPCC claim that Himalayan glaciers would disappear by 2035.
What manner of mental defective could EVER have believed such a preposterous claim, in the first place?
They should have their glaciologist licenses revoked never to perform a Pap smear again.
Ron Bailey was promoting this crap about 18 months ago....cap and trade was regarded as practical due to the consensus among all reasonable scientist that "something" had to be done about CO2. People who argued were call "unscientific", "radicals", "idealistic", "conspiracy nuts". The Cosmo/Koch/CATO wing of libertarians was 100% ready to "comprimise" as a sign of their rational practicality. NEVER FORGET
gabe,
I wasn't around here 18 months ago but I have been around long enough to know that NEVER FORGETs require an exact date.
Please research and resubmit.
At the time, I was hoping that RB was playing the journalist game of pretending to accept a premise in order to gain access to all the meetings.
Gabe: Since you suggest a little trip down memory lane and while we're busy NEVER FORGETTING, you and other H&R commenters might enjoy re-reading a couple of my columns on the topic:
First, my September, 2006 column,"Confessions of an Alleged ExxonMobil Whore" on the difficulties I have evaluating scientific information in a highly policitized area, and my May, 2007 article, "Carbon Taxes vs. Carbon Markets" where I definitely did NOT come out in favor of cap-and-trade.
I am covering the current revelations about IPCC and other climate science shenanigans as news. I am waiting with considerable interest to see how the reanalysis of surface temperature data set adjustments turn out.
I knew you would kick his ass Ron Bailey!
John, stop kissing ass.
NEVER FORGET
How can we? JOHN WON'T LET US
Stop calling me SUKI!!
Ron Bailey, thanks for correcting me. You came out in favor of Carbon taxes, how could I have forgotten which of the two statist plans you backed?....and you are proud enough of it that you posted the article for all of us to see!
Here is the money quote for everyone to see:
"Why impose limits? Because accumulating scientific evidence indicates that the increased concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is causing average temperatures to rise globally. This increase could trigger significant disruption of the world's climate by the end of this century. Although there remain serious uncertainties about the magnitude of the human role in climate change, there is a growing consensus that emissions need to be reduced.
The battle now is over how."
You cite monetary czars greenspan and Volcker as being great minds who agree with your totalitarian recomendations as if that should add to the libertarian cred of CO2 taxes.
you then go ont o explain how it won't really be much of a burden anyways
" The CBO calculated the income effects of a 15 percent cut in carbon emissions: the average household in the lowest one-fifth of income earners would pay about $560 per year more and households in the highest quintile would pay $1,800 per year; however, $560 represents 3.3 percent of the average income of households in the lowest fifth, while $1,800 is just 1.7 percent of income for households in the top fifth"
you bought this BS Ron...admit it! The "conspiracy nuts" were right and you were a sucker. Every time you snarkily quoted the "deniers" as describing the pro-co2 taxers as "alarmist" you outed yorr bias.
gabe: As I said, I am waiting with considerable interest the results of the reanalyses of various surface temperature datasets. With regard to carbon taxes vs. carbon markets (aka cap-and-trade), part of my argument is that taxes are the least bad of the two policy alternatives being considered. For a longer and more recent disquisition on how one might address man-made global warming, see my article, "Is Government Action Worse than Global Warming?"
Finally, I am doing my best not to give into my confirmation biases on this issue. I hope the rest of H&R commnenters are too.
You are right...you have come back over to the good side over the last two years and I apologize for being a dick about one of your worst paragraphs out of hundreds of articles over a 4 year period...obviously you'd see I have written plenty of dumb shit too if you went through all my postings(which nobody has any desire to even do, because I don't matter at all.)
Still I am definitely giving in to my bias, the government is incredibly corrupt. I have studied hundreds of issues in depth over the years and 100% of the time...whenever I have studied the issue, I have found that the proposals to infringe on individual liberty are the result of the use of BS logic and reasoning to screw the politicaly weak at the expense of the politically powerful. After seeing it a few hundred times, I am biased...when I find a counter-case I may change my bias. It doesn't matter what the new temperature data says...CO2 taxes won't fix ANYTHING! they will make things worse, your naivity at excepting the premise that this is all being done to "save the earth" is fucking insane. They find PR slogans and ideas that they think they can fucking sell...then they sell the BS to useful idiots to GAIN FUCKING POWER. STOP being a fuckin tool!
What manner of mental defective could EVER have believed such a preposterous claim, in the first place?
To be fair about it, I can understand why reasonable people would have considered the IPCC credible before learning what we've learned in the last couple of months.
But certainly given everything we know now, I don't how anyone can any longer believe a word that comes out of the mouths of the IPCC or their decline-hiding muckrakers.
Penn State is refusing to honor a FOI request regarding Mann.
I'm not sure if states and state entities are required to. They're conducting a sham internal "investigation" of him. It's an absolute joke.
The entire Mainstream media and all the politicians except the "gladflys", "wackos", "cranks" and "conspiracy nuts" were mentally defective enough to believe the preposterous claims. Same thing happened with the Iraq war.
The Times (London) is reporting that ...the head of Greenpeace in the U.K. is calling for the resignation of Rajendra Pachauri. chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Why? Because Pachauri stonewalled...
This is just further evidence that Climate Change isn't about the science anymore it's about public policy and influencing public opinion.
And when you're talking about public opinion, Caesar's wife must be above reproach.
...that really didn't come out right, what I was trying to say is that science isn't a popularity contest, but that's what these scientists seem to be engaging in.
Public policy's another question entirely. ...but some of these scientists seem to behave as though public policy and science were the same thing. As if to reject the solutions offered at Copenhagen and/or Kyoto were the same as rejecting the science.
But it is possible to accept the science and reject the proposed solutions. No, really.
Ron, you two have something in common big oil connections!
How cool is that?
Global Warming Climate Change still causes earthquakes, right? They haven't debunked that yet, have they?
I thought the George Bush/Dick Cheney earthquake weapon caused them?
Dunno. Check the list.
Cool link.
WoW
That's some list ya got there Lou.
Nice, JW. Global warming causes almost as many problems as HFCS!
Wha wha what??!
I said almost.
That's awesome! I clicked on "Invasion of Midges" thinking it read "Invasion of Midgets." I don't think I need to tell you how disappointed I was.
Fist,
The short answer is yes. GW is still the root cause of earthquakes.
1) GW causes more crops to grow.
2) These crops are turned into Trans Fat!
3) Tasty Trans Fat is slipped into fast food items
4) Ugly Americans drive the SUV's through the drive thru at fast food joints releasing more smog which increases GW.
5) These americans also get extremely Obese. The effect of all these lard asses tramping through the unspoiled environment leads to stresses on the tectonic plates which = Earthquakes.
So you see a combination of GW and Trans Fat lead to Obesity and Earthquakes.
Of course this connection could be broken if people would only listen to Michelle Obama's sermons on the evils of Obesity. But of course they won't. Because of Racism.
Wow, very good analysis. Should be picked by the IPCC very soon.
I have to warn you, if the IPCC has an open bar I'm going to sell out.
My will is not very strong.
I'm so craven that I would come up with a link between GW and autism just so I could invite a bunch of MILMAAKW's* to the IPCC open bar.
* Mother-I'd-Like to Make Another Autistic Kid With
What a comprehensive analysis! Very impressed.
What are all you people doing on my thread?
I haven't been around in a while. What ever happened to joe and neu mejican and mng?
The last two are still around, with MNG adding fake handles daily. I keep hearing of a joe but have never seen him on this board.
come to think of it, I haven't seen gaius marius since bush failed to declare himself emperor for life as predicted.
That one is not familiar to me at all. Not sure if I have been here a year yet or not, but it's close.
gaius still blogs here. Very good blog. gaius was way ahead of the pack when it came to predicting the housing collapse.
Oh man! Gaius!?! I remember his posts from before even I started to post comments! I feel old now.
That's okay I've been here for almost eight years, and then is probably my 20th hande.
...the only way to recognize me is by the consistent typos.
By that standard you must be.....75% of the posters, myself included, on this board.
Back in the aughts joe was one of the more prolific and astute commenters. He was also a cheerleader for team blue.
His attacks on Bush and the GOP were often crippling. However he had a big blind spot for the benevolence of Democrats.
In the years after the D's won the house in '06, joe lost much of his edge. A true believer in the chosen one, joe left H&R in shame once it became clear that he would not be getting a pony.
They say he haunts other blogs now. Blogs with more of a blue hue. Blogs where being well read and articulate will mask fallacious reasoning.
on the rare occasion that Yglesias writes something particularly retarded, i'll peruse the comments and see Joe from Lowell and I laugh.
Joe was the worst. He was just the more clever version of CHONY. MNG actually was a better more thoughtful liberal. Sadly, the climate gate e-mails did him in like the 06 election did Joe in.
Stop speaking its name! We're already at 3!
From that link SF posted below he did not sound more thoughtful than a stone.
joe was good at wonky political analysis. He could even set aside his team blue pom-poms and look at particular political races and analyze them in an insightful manner. As the Dems got more control, though, he started wearing the TEAM BLUE cheerleader costume a bit too much, until he was almost a caricature.
Warren,
I love you like a brother, but please stop calling joe astute. He had his moments, yes, but saying that he was generally clever and articulate is like saying that the Vikings generally bomb the NFC championship game (when they really only do it once every 10 seasons like clockwork.)
Joe was convinced in 2005 that if the Democrats took Congress in 2006, they would end the war in Iraq. There was nothing politically astute about Joe. He was only right to the extent that he always said the Dems would win and he would get a pony and indeed sometimes the Dems do win. But sadly for Joe, he never gets a pony.
yep...that is what happened. Obama was also going to end torture and stop wiretapping....LOL ...so fucking hilarious...Joe, the democrats are fascist too...and the CO2 taxes were a big scam you fucking no-astute masshole moron.
Personally, I miss Joe. He was a clean, articulate guy and only spoke in dialects when it suited him.
joe ran off with his tail between his scrawy legs after Obama failed to bring about the Rapture of the Democrats. MNG mysteriously disappeared right after the Scott Brown election. NM has been posting less and less lately.
Lonewhacko is gone too... Warty insulted him into getting the banhammer (we think.)
The new trolls are Tony and Chad--who sockpuppet each other and are collectively known a Chony--DJF, who only shows up to to complain about TEH CORPORASHUNS!, the sockpuppeteer who shows up on every damn Che thread, and various assorted whiners.
Warty insulted him into getting the banhammer (we think.)
He crazied himself into bannination-nation. I was just the needle that popped his crazy-balloon, if anything.
We're no less thankful. Still, he ruins almost every other blog I read. You should expand your scope.
Maybe we should run an ad for some new trolls. This year's crop is just shriveled and puny.
Remember, ACORN is out there doing God's work!!
Cry-baby joe storms off in a huff.
The Warty/LW thread was sent down the memory hole.
First comment by sage made me LOL.
Joe, the race-obsessed troll, is the one you guys keep wanting to come back and chat with? I don't get it.
Must say that Tim Cavanaugh|2.20.09 @ 12:37AM is disappointing.
Here's a better joe thread:

I know there are way better ones, but this is the only one I had time to find right now.
I miss joe. He would never, ever admit that he had lost a debate. Thread after thread, he would dig himself into more and more absurd and self-contradictory arguments -- and would still claim he won the debate! Except on Fridays, when he would just get pissy.
This is just like Piltdown Man. Does that mean you don't believe in evolution? Stupid libertardians. Hurr Durr!
We bow to your Terminal degree Oh Wise one!
Well, the Piltdown fraud got exposed because they accepted to have the skull seen by others... Now where is the data that you can cross-verify? They've hidden (or lost!!!) the stupid skull and they claim it is "proof" of "Piltdown man".
So when is the scandal going to break about which of of the climatologists got caught with thier pants down in the presence of a sheep? Inevitably all the controversy ends with a sex scandal.
That is their secret plan to draw more support.

He did it through illegal quantum tunneling.

Holy fuck, this guy is a huge douchebag.
Britsh class snobbery filtered through Indian culture.
Native South Asian men will never admit they're wrong. They have a cultural thing where anyone who has a position as an "expert" must be able to answer every question, immediately. Any hesitation or wavering - let alone reversing one's position - is perceived as a total negation of the person's knowledge and capabilities. The women aren't as bad, but they're close.
It can make it really fucking annoying to work with them.
Fuck You!
That's NOBEL PEACE PRIZE level douchery. He'd shovel more, but he has to fly to the other side of the planet to watch a cricket match.

Like the difference between being raped or just being sodomized. Indeed, the argument can be made that one could be "less bad" than the other, but just as the two are acts of aggression, "Cap & Trade" and Taxation are both private property transfers by coercive means, better known in the vernacular of liberty as "thievery".
same logic used for all Reason columnists who voted for McCain and Obama...keep it up a-holes

No, no, no.
The caption should read, "I ordered Teryaki Soba noodles and my friend had the sushi warmed about .06 degrees C higher than last year"
Now this being said, they will fire Pachauri and re-start the circus with a different clown. The goal of Green Peace is obviously to have the blame put on a single person and save (from public opinion) the whole (rotten) IPCC name.
Caption: "Mommy will be SO proud! She'll want to put it on the fridge."
Yeah. Once they start bottling IPCC Classic everything will be cool.
By the way, in your latest "weather is not climate (except for when it's really warm outside)" news, it looks like the mid-Atlantic is going to get slammed with another blizzard tomorrow that could be even bigger than the one we got a few weeks ago.
Heh, did you see the article in the Washington ComPost claiming that the extra snow is more proof of global warming? O Gawd, it's snowing...in the wintertime! And we're getting hurricanes...in hurricane season! What more proof do we need?
The argument is that global warming causes more evaporation from major water bodies (i.e., oceans); more evaporation means more water in the air; means more extreme weather; means bigger, badder huricanes in the summer and bigger, badder snowstorms in the winter.
Kinnath,
You forgot to claim that all the extra water evaporation also causes more droughts and deserts along with the extra rain... the bullshit never ends.
The theory that increase energy and moisture in the atmosphere produces a trend towards more extreme weather events seems not totally unreasonable and should be verifiable.
However, anyone that uses a specific storm as proof for or against AGW is full of shit.
We never had weird weather like this until they stopped testing atomic bombs in the atmosphere.
It seems that they alarmist have lost Greenpeace, but all they have to do to get Ron Bailey back on the old team is to have some new panels conduct a official investigation and release some new temp data and he will be all aboard the new and improved global-co2-tax-because-it-is-poison-train.
Come on ride that train

gabe: If you're interested see my reply posts above.
I am interested and thank you greatly for your replies. It really is more than I deserve. I have been too rude. I sill think that "anxiously waiting on the "new data"...is a bit silly given all the info that is out there that even if we are warming at 1 degree per year...CO2 taxes run by any government on this earth that has ever existed, will do nothing to actually fix the climate. It will only give more power to kleptocrats who are destroying the very property rights that were needed to make the massive leaps our civilization has made in the last 300 years.
damned threaded comments...old school was better.
I retrospect, Mr, Bailey, perhaps you should have said:
Although there remain In spite of the serious uncertainties about the magnitude of the human role in climate change, there is a growing political consensus that emissions need to be reduced.
To be fair, I don't know that even a semi-serious follower of the issue could have known until the ClimateGate emails came out last year just how corrupted the science was, so I don't hold it against you that you went along with a "weight-of-scientific-opinion" in favor of some undefined link between global warming and CO2 emissions.
But seriously, the "science" in favor the catastrophic cascading scenarios needed to support any kind of political action was always very speculative, no?
"To be fair, I don't know that even a semi-serious follower of the issue could have known until the ClimateGate emails came out last year just how corrupted the science was, so I don't "
Any serious follower of the history of political movements to centralize power and the organzations that push to destroy individual iberties could see this corruption and bag of lies coming for miles. The "conspiracy nuts" were right...we told you to read the Club of Rome documents! stuff like the "The First Global Revolution" published in 1993:http://www.archive.org/details/TheFirstGlobalRevolution
read the whole thing, but start at page 70(81 in the pdf)if you are too bored to do that. "New enemies must be identified...however it appears that awareness of the new enemies are, as yet, insufficient to bring about world solidarity and cohesion in the fight....page75 "In searching for a common enemy against whom we can unite, we came up with the idea of pollution,THE THREAT OF GLOBAL WARMING..and the like would fit the bill" "the real enemy then is humanity itself"
in 2007 (the same year Bailey was supporting CO2 taxes)the New York Times published an extraordinary editorial complaining that "Right now, everyone is using the atmosphere like a municipal dump, depositing carbon dioxide free." The Times editors suggested that the government "start charging for the privilege" by imposing a "carbon tax."
People who claim they had no way of knowing how corrupt the alarmist community is are just as ridiculous as the people like Hillary Clinton who say they had no way to know how corrupt the false Iraqi WMD claims were or the bailout supporters who claim they had no way to know how corrupt Paulson, Geithner and the Fed are!!! it is outrageous...any fool who believe these people has lost all credibility. You are the worst form of mockingbird big government apologist. You mock the "conspiracy nuts" who were right about all these issues. The same type of people who used to claim there was no such thing as a bilderberg group and now cliam "ya there is a bilderberg group but they aren't important and it is fine that the media doesn't try to report on their annual meeting...keep paying your taxes bitches....and be scared of the terrurist! be very scared!"
gabe: I think you might enjoy my first book, ECO-SCAM: The False Prophets of the Apocalypse.
From the Barnes & Noble synopsis:
Fifteen years ago, we were warned to prepare for the next Ice Age. Today, we worry about our ever-shrinking ozone layer and the looming threat of global warming. Ever since the atomic bomb, the public and policymakers have been barraged by predictions of imminent environmental doom - none of which came true, and, Ronald Bailey asserts, none of which probably ever will come true. In this timely, hard-hitting book, Bailey explores and explodes the popular myths of global disaster, from "nuclear winter" to the depletion of nonrenewable resources. Who are the "prophets of doom" whose apocalyptic visions keep their lecture calendars full and their audiences in constant anticipation of the world's end? What effect are they having on the economic and environmental policies that will shape our planet's future? Bailey, a PBS producer and former Forbes science writer, offers clear and compelling arguments to debunk the popular grim prophecies. In the process, he questions the wisdom of such established environmental gurus as Carl Sagan, Jeremy Rifkin, Paul Ehrlich, and Barry Commoner: Are they activists or alarmists? In a book sure to raise discussion, debate, and controversy, Bailey assures us that while the earth is in far better shape than we've been led to believe, a few highly paid, highly regarded "intellectuals" are building successful careers out of convincing us otherwise, and diverting scarce resources into foolish and unnecessary programs.
You wrote a really good book. I liked it along with clear foundations that Julian Simon's books laid for your writings and your abundant references to Richard Lindzen who is very legit. I like all that, I still don't think the real facts about government and policy implementation versus "ideals" can be ignored. This whole thing is a scam to get power and it should never be forgoten how even well educated "libertarian" leaning people keep falling for the same lies over and over.
I don't believe that the Bilderberg group are anywhere near as effective as they believe themselves to be, let alone what their detractors believe.
People with more money than common sense get together and make their plans, but the market scuttles them because there are economic laws that can't be overcome.
-jcr
I've got no idea how effective they are because there is next to zero reporting on them. The only time the media has brought them up over the last 50 years is to say they didn't exist and the pick one (anti-semites/white supremicist/militia groups) think they run the world. Of course it is impossible that educated people who aren't racist and don't think they control everything in the world, might still be interested in seeing more investigative reporting on what the richest most powerful people in the world are discussing. What the General Dynamics and Oracle CEO's are saying versus what the David Rockefeller and Henry Kissinger are saying..."no that wouldn't be news...shut the fuck up racist conspiracy nut!" is the only thing we get.
The Graham Family, Murdoch's, Kissingers, Zebrinski,Rockefellers attend and of course the WP, WSJ and NYT don't report on it. That much I do know. If I have to choose who to believe on certain issues this will factor into my equation.
Also known as Shaggy.

For a second I though you were advocating that we cut his sack...not cool...BUT, if we had to do it to protect us from CO2 taxes I'm sure there are some good national review libertarians who could help write that article.
get that John Yoo fucker to work on this...no, I guess he will only justify torture if it benefits Blackwater and the military industrial complex.
Speaking of John Yoo...Obama would give him a hand job before he would end torture.
No. We need a CIA interrogation team to go after Mann and the whole crew at West Anglia to determine what happened to all that climate data the "accidentily deleted" and what it really said. It is a ticking time bomb man.
the climate could be on the edge of the event horizon, there may be no turning back and the entire future of our civilization depends on getting the real data so we can analyze this problem.....please CIA agents! start torturing some climate propagandists, you may be the only ones who can save us with your torture....you are the real Jack Baur....please save us!
