All well and good, but I agree with the Reasonoids who pointed out that the Dems always have a hole card:

At this point, their electoral oppo is Republicans.

If the Tea Party graduates from an inchoate grassroots mob (NTTAWT!) to an actual political party (reducing the Repubs to third party status), then maybe we can see a fundamental change in American politics with a statist party fighting it out with an anti-statist party.

Otherwise, its going to be endless rounds of meet the new boss. . . .

    1. Suki   15 years ago

If they just glitz it up a little the Tea Party people could get the support of the Cosmotarians.

      1. Tooway   14 years ago

You should keep an eye out for more details on this exciting program that will bridge the gap to your highest potential and utmost satisfaction.

I'm not at all confident that a Tea Party that actually comes into power will remain anti-statist for long. The tea partiers are already beset by the problem of having their movement co-opted by statist politician wolves in sheeps' clothing -- and they don't even have power yet!

The only way we're going to have any shot at limited government in this country is if the voters demand it and are vigilant about punishing politicians who fail to deliver it. I see absolutely no evidence that that's the case now. The current anti-government fad is due to the (correct) perception that the administration and Congress are picking the taxpayers' pockets and handing over money to their palls on Wall St and special interests. As soon as that activity becomes less blatant, the fad will be over.

Look, I want to believe it just as much as anyone here but don't get ahead of yourselves. November is a long ways off and they'd be swapped with Republicans that are no better.

Watching the lose though would be great.

    1. Tulpa   15 years ago

They won't be any better -- but they will be useful for blocking the mischief the Democrats would like to do. Our system of government doesn't just acknowledge that political office will be held by the most power-hungry people -- it depends on it. Would-be dictators don't tend to cooperate.

This is a radical idea, but I think the solution may be a European-style multiparty coalitions in Congress. Split up the Republican Party into a moderate fiscal-conservative party, a social-conservative party and a libertarian party. Although they would have different areas of dominance (the Northeast, the South and the West respectively), they wouldn't have to try and fit in the same big tent and cause the contradiction-riddled mess that is the current Republican Party. They could come to ad hoc agreements in Congress, and perhaps reach agreements not to run candidates in certain congressional districts or senate races.

Why is Reason sucking up to Reynolds lately? He's the model of a Republican hack masquerading as libertarian when it's convenient.

    1. R C Dean   15 years ago

You don't read Reynolds much, do you, vanya? He's pretty hard on the Repubs much of the time.

lol, I thought he just said BJTV.

In the film version of "1984" made in 1984, starring John Hurt & Sir Richard Burton, when Big Brother is about to make an announcment, the telescreen starts with a big "V" across it. Everytime I see the "InstaVision" logo I am reminded of that.

Maybe also because I know Glen Reynolds newspeak version of "libertarianism"
