Joe Lieberman: Connecticut's Own John Wayne Gacy?
The Washington Post's Ezra Klein says that by opposing the final health care bill, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) "seems willing to directly cause the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in order to settle an old electoral score." As both Mark Hemingway and J.P. Freire of The Washington Examiner noticed, Klein edited his post, removing the word "directly"—that was, apparently, too much—but leaving his nuanced argument that Lieberman is a mass murderer. His Post colleague Charles Lane objects:
How else to explain the outrageous smear of Lieberman, posted earlier today by youthful policy wonk Ezra Klein on The Post's Web site? Apropos of Lieberman's opposition to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's proposed Medicare buy-in for uninsured people between the ages of 55 and 64, Klein had this to say: "At this point, Lieberman seems primarily motivated by torturing liberals. That is to say, he seems willing to cause the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in order to settle an old electoral score." (Emphasis mine.)
Let me repeat: Klein essentially accuses Lieberman of mass murder because he disagrees with him on a policy issue about which there is considerable debate among people of good will across the political spectrum.
This is disgusting, and pretty illogical, too. Klein brandishes a study by the Urban Institute showing that the lack of health insurance contributed to the deaths of 137,000 people between 2000 and 2006. But last time I checked, Joe Lieberman does not oppose insuring everyone. Indeed, he is on record favoring "legislation that expands access to the millions who do not have coverage, improves quality and lowers costs while not impeding our economic recovery or increasing the debt." He simply opposes the public option, as well as Harry Reid's last-minute improvisation on Medicare. Klein's outburst only makes sense if you assume that there is one conceivable way to expand health insurance coverage, and that Harry Reid has discovered it.
In unrelated news (and not deserving of its own post), The Nation's Washington correspondent Chris Hayes tweets an "uncomfortable," Tom Friedman-like thought suggesting that perhaps China should remain a dictatorship for the good of Mother Earth.

How else to explain the outrageous smear of Lieberman, posted earlier today by youthful policy wonk Ezra Klein [?]
Simple; Klein is an hysterical douchebag of the highest order.
Who's never created, run anything, or probably held a position of serious responsibility in his life.
Nah, douchebag sounds better.
How is Ezra Klein any more of a "wonk" than your typical hit and run poster? I thought "wonk" meant someone who actually knows a lot about a field and has worked in it and done serious work in it. What has that moron done besides sit around and smell his own farts?
Perhaps Lane meant 'wank.'
someone who actually knows a lot about a field and has worked in it and done serious work in it
The word wonk is disputed. Wikipedia defines it in strictly policy-expert terms, though Random House (circa 1993) defined it as: "a student who spends much time studying and has little or no social life," alternately as a "stupid, boring, or unattractive person."
I like the dense and subtle contempt wrapped into Lane's "youthful policy wonk."
Not only did wonk imply expertise as you say, but it was not limited to policy. An episode of a network tv show from the seventies (don't hold me to this but it may have been the tv spinoff of the George-W.-Bush-goes-to-law-school movie Paper Chase) has college students desperately searching for a wonk who could help them retrieve an accidentally deleted thesis. There is much discussion of what a wonk is and/or does, and when the wonk finally arrive, he is a pushy and supercilious computer geek. The wonk performs showy acts of computer wisardry with theatrical gestures -- the seventies version of today's moving of holographic data by waving your hands around in the air -- and succeeds in retrieving the delated data.
So there was definitely a connotation of actual professionalism or effectiveness, but I think any hint of the "worked in it and done serious work in" meaning has been lost for good. When I hear the word wonk I think of an Ivy League Bright Boy who has never held a real job and more importantly never had the painful but salubrious experience of having nobody give a shit what his opinions are.

To repeat an earlier comment of mine, 'willing to cause the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people'is a fair description of the Senate majority, which is willing have the federal government support elective abortions, reversing Congressional policy of over a quarter century.
Increasing federal support for abortions will increase the number of abortions, and thus cause the deaths of hundreds of thousands of human beings.
i can't wait to have my free abortion
Abortion is an issue which could possibly wreck the health-care bill. If only because of that fact, folks who oppose the bill as a whole should be paying closer attention.
If you say, 'I don't want to think about abortion,' then extremists like me will capture the debate. You wouldn't want that, would you? ?
Extremists like you will continue to be either ignored or made fun of by various sections of the debate. And you'll enjoy it, too, that's the sick part.
Yeah, it's really fun to be ignored. To tell the truth, it turns me on.
'Ignore me . . . disregard me . . . dismiss my concerns . . . oh yes, ignore me more!'
Forgot my ? symbol again.
Incidentally, do you believe that abortion does *not* destroy human beings, or do you think that it doesn't much matter one way or the other, because there are more important things to worry about?
uh oh
i think it kills future hitlers.
And which 'section of the debate' does Congressman Stupak belong to? He persuaded the House to add prolife language to the bill (the language the Senate omits).
Come to think of it, the House bill reflects the policy reflected in the Hyde Amendment, which has been Congressional policy for over a quarter of a century.
Yet you claim that the prolife movement is irrelevant.
That reminds me of that French general who said in 1940 that England's neck would be 'wrung like a chicken's.'
Churchill's reply was 'some chicken - some neck!'
That's some delicious irony, the meaning of your username compared to your statement.
is this an almost Godwin?
"Lieberman is directly causing The Holocaust II."
woah woah woah
Let's not get carried away.
Chris Hayes tweets an "uncomfortable," Tom Friedman-like thought suggesting that perhaps China should remain a dictatorship for the good of Mother Earth.
If the good of Mother Earth is your metric, then all sorts of delightful things become advisable, beginning with forced sterilization.
This is where I always apply my favorite political test: let whatever is proposed be done to the one proposing it.
In this case, if people favor keeping China a dictatorship, let them be deported to China to live under the regime they support.
In the case of forced sterilization, anyone proposing it must be immediately sterilized. If they have already had children, those children must also be sterilized.
Anyone in favor of abortion-on-demand must be aborted if anyone demands it. (See Paul Hogan's hilarious short story "Zap Thy Neighbor" for an example of how this might work in practice.)
By the same logic, Al Gore must be stripped of his C02-spewing jet, mansion, limousine, and anything else he has that demonstrably spews lots of C02.
Anyone supporting China's one-child policy must be forcibly sterilized after having one child. If she has already had more than one child, she must be put to death to make room for her excess children.
Of course, this political test also mandates that any mandate our Congress passes must likewise be applied to Congress. That Congress shot down amendments requiring this very thing invalidates the entire ZeroCare bill and any arguments in favor of it.
Joe Lieberman does not oppose insuring everyone. Indeed, he is on record favoring "legislation that expands access to the millions who do not have coverage, improves quality and lowers costs while not impeding our economic recovery or increasing the debt."
He left out the part where he'd give everyone free unicorns farting rainbows out their ass.
Would there be a pot o' gold at the end of each one? Because I'd be on board then (one restriction applies: the pot must not be at the ass end of the unicorn).
No, the bill left that out. That's why he doesn't support it.
What a selfish sob Lieberman is. 40,000 people a year die because they don't have health insurance.* If he would unselfishly help them pass legislation in the next two weeks, then 40,000 people a year would stop dying........in 2014. 40k people on you, Joe, in three years. Two weeks, Joe. Tick mf tock.
*Bernie Sanders - everytime he opens his mouth about health care legislation
More people than that die in car accidents in the US every year.
That number has plummeted since Kennedy died.
Yeah, but how many Senators would give up their seat just shy of half a century like ole Teddy? Uh?
Like you can verify that. What are you gonna do - some bullshit like look at the number of car accidents and associated fatalities? How do you know if those people didn't have health insurance and that's why they died!?
What else do you have, some bullshit about that car accident stat adding to our higher mortality rate? Or people getting capped adding to our mortality rate?
Bernie said 40k. If you want me to verify that number with evidence, I'll put a you tube link of Bernie saying it. The debate is over.
"Bernie said 40k. If you want me to verify that number with evidence, I'll put a you tube link of Bernie saying it. The debate is over."
This is hilarious. Thought you were serious but it turns out you were just setting up the punchline.
Your Chad-impersonation skills are excellent, Hank.
Your Chad-impersonation skills are excellent, Hank.
Yeah, let's look at some statistics...
Did you know that more people WITH healthcare die every year than people WITHOUT healthcare?
Lieberman is simply trying to find a way to reduce health care costs.
But wouldn't free healthcare just keep too many people alive who rape Mother Earth?
'Chris Hayes tweets an "uncomfortable," Tom Friedman-like thought suggesting that perhaps China should remain a dictatorship for the good of Mother Earth.'
When someone on *my* side says something outrageous, he's being courageous, bold and daring, raising the uncomfortable issues that others would prefer to ignore.
When someone on *their* side says something outrageous, it's . . . an outrage.
Debate settled. Environmentalists are totalitarian dweebs. Oh, and can we start to dismiss this "myth" that China is oh-so superior on its environmental policy. This thing start rolling about a year ago and has since picked up serious steam.
Oh, so that's why American "computer recyclers" typically ship the computer garbage to China so the heavy metal toxins can be dumped there.
Like we don't ship some of that shit to India, Malaysia, and Africa. Don't be a racist.
You're going to have to put a little more effort into it, "hank." The trolls around here crap bigger than you.
Perhaps I could have calibrated my words differently. I doubt that, all I eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner is prime rib marinated in soda, finished with a creamy velveeta spread, washed down with a gallon of cool-aid (raspberry hope and change flavor). I poot thunderstorms.
You misunderstood me. The turds that come out of the trolls around here are bigger than your body. They crap bigger than you.

That must be the reason du jour. When did The Nation ever think any country shouldn't be a communist tyranny?
Curse my html-fu.
The existence of Ezra Klein is killing countless Americans.
I call for greater access to abortion to deal with his existence.
So Lieberman is on record of being for healthcare for everyone is he?
Lieberman was also on record as being for the expansion of medicare and medicaid too.
Problem is, Lieberman's word isn't worth spit. He proved that beyond all doubt today. He is willing to deny healthcare to people so he can settle some political scores. He is an unprincipled hypocritical liar.
People will die early from a lack of HC because Lieberman killed this bill. Their blood will be on his hands.
No, people will die because that is what people do. I'm almost certain there is not immortality clause in the bill. Luckily if this bill dies some may not have to die poor, in a waiting line, using the same technology as today....40 years from now.
