Death by Capitalism

|

Under the headline "Capitalism raises murder rate, says Shizuka Kamei, Japan's Finance Minister" in the London Times:

Shizuka Kamei, Japan's new Financial Services Minister, has launched an "astonishing", full-frontal assault on corporate Japan, in which he charged the country's largest companies with raising the national rate of family murders.

The domestic murder rate has advanced in Japan, he said, "because companies have stopped treating humans the way they should be treated"….

Mr Kamei's philosophy appears to hark back to a period of Japanese corporate life when companies were encouraged to think of "sufficient" levels of profits and then circulate the excess throughout the rest of the economy, an often woefully inefficient practice that prompted many outside observers to question whether Japan was a capitalist country at all.

Many are agitating for Capitalism 2.0 in the wake of the crash, but perhaps they really want Capitalism ?.

  1. I guess Kamei-san seeks with his anti-capitalist screed to be the “Rei of light” for his nation.

Sorry, had to do that given the use of ? above.

  2. And here we thought all those Asian types were smart.

    1. Another great post from KBoingBoingMW at ReasonBurakuMagazine! Meanwhile, during what years was Japan “inefficient”, and were people generally better off (and not just in the financial case)?

P.S. In case anyone replies to this, their responses will almost assuredly be ad homs, thereby conceding my points and showing the childish, anti-intellectual nature of libertarians. Dozens of comments here have shown that the phrase “fascist libertarian” isn’t an oxymoron.

      1. May I?

        Don’t mind if I do.

        Shut the fuck up, LoneWacko.

      2. STFULW

  3. How does this “rise in the murder rate” compare to the rise in the murder rates that happened in China and Russia because of communism? I would think the government killing twenty or thirty million people would raise the rate a bit.

  4. That’s not murder, John, it is merely the breaking of eggs.

    1. By the way, we didn’t get our omelet.

  5. Is this about Japanese companies abandoning their strict seniority practices?

    1. I got the impression that it was about abandoning the employment for life policies.

However, I have heard that employment for life was nowhere near as common as it was made out to be.

IIANM, it was pretty much limited to the largest industrial and banking concerns which as big as they were only accounted for a portion of the jobs in the country.

  6. Hmmm.
One would expect to see some sort of correlation were this true.

    1. Ah, Louisiana.

  7. This is even dumber than blaming street crime on Rap music.

  8. This is even dumber than blaming street crime on Rap music.

Or Satanic ritual murder on backwards messages in heavy metal music.

Sadly, it’ll probably get the same amount of attention in the legislative halls of the world. If not more.

  9. Fuck, that’s about as close as a human being can come to looking like Hypno-toad.

    1. companies have stopped treating humans the way they should be treated…

…he said, and then flicked a fly in midair with his tongue. Mmm, oishii desu!

  10. ALL HAIL THE HYPNOTOAD

  11. Your looking at next year’s Nobel Prize in Economics winner.

    1. That may have been his intent, as the mayor of Tokyo is bucking for the Nobel Peace prize next year by going the Gore route.

      1. CAPITALISM TOOK MY BABY AWAY, KILLED MY DADDY, AND CAPITALISM USES TSUNAMIS TO PREY ON THE POOR. I WANT TO END CAPITALIST WARS ON THE POOR BY BRINGING EVERYBODY TOGETHER SO WE CAN YEARN FOR A BETTER WORLD OF HOPE AND PROMISE FOR A BETTER TOMORROW.

Okay, now where is my prize, and my million?

        1. Bah…

The KKK took my baby away
          They took her away
          Away from me.

  12. Bold use of the Japanese hypertext!

  13. “because companies have stopped treating humans the way they should be treated”

There’s a difference between consensual and forced action, Mr. Kamei. Dude would make a terrible Mr. Slave. Jesus Christ!

  14. I’m not sure if this guy looks more like Jabba the Hutt or John Murtha. And I’m not sure which would be worse.

    1. My vote is a squinty-eyed Jonathan Winters, wearing a bad toupee, and suffering from a touch of jaundice.

  15. I want to abolish economics, politics and society.

I’d be happier, at least. I can’t see any meaningful difference between socialism and capitalism, since they both involve the exchange of goods.

    Fuck economies.

    1. I can’t see any meaningful difference between socialism and capitalism, since they both involve the exchange of goods.

With capitalism the exchange is voluntary. With socialism the exchange is compulsory.

  16. I don’t want to buy, sell or process anything.

    1. I don’t want to process anything bought or sold.

  17. I find it ironic, actually, considering how many people point at Japanese capitalism as a model of public-private cooperation.

Japan’s business culture is well known for the stress it places on workers. The fact that those workers have fewer opions for becoming entrepreneurs in an economy dominated by a few politically connected entrenched conglomerates might have something to do with that.

  18. Is it just me or does that guy look like a blowfish?

    1. I think the consensus is Hypnotoad.

      1. Geez, that video Warty posted was so fucking ret-ALL HAIL THE HYPNOTOAD.

  19. I thought that he was the Japanese version of the guy from Northern Exposure. You know, the guy who was the general in War Games.

  20. He brings great shame to the name Kamei, a name that should only be reserved for Eri Kamei

  21. According to Wikiality, the last recorded change in Japan’s homicide rate was a drop.

Maybe he was thinking of the suicide rate (just current numbers, no historical data).

  22. What a fucking idiot. I raugh at roud at your stupidity.

  23. Look what capitalism has done to this guy! It has turned him into a claymation creature that could terrorize the streets of Tokyo.

Oh No, he says capitalism has got to go, go go oh hynotoad! Oh no, there goes Tokyo, go go oh hypnotoad!

    1. Merging Hypnotoad with B.O.C. works for me.

  24. PZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZT

  25. hmm sounds like someone wants to lose another decade.

  26. Yesterday, it was suicide. Today, it’s murder.

Capitalism: Ridding the World of the Human Pestilence.

  27. Kamei’s the financial services minister because the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) needs the People’s New Party (PNP) to have a ruling upper house coalition. The PNP only offers five seats, but the DPJ needs them. As such, Kamei has a lot of power, and he’s very aware of that.

But today’s weirdness is at least just rhetoric. The most bizarre stuff is definitely stuff like the moratorium on debt repayment by small companies:

We’re going to get financial institutions to provide these firms with more loans. Banks won’t have to treat debt on which they provide a moratorium as bad.

hmm sounds like someone wants to lose another decade.

  28. And here we thought all those Asian types were smart.

    I am merely inscrutable.

    1. Well, Hypnotoad, if you follow those policies and the ones described by Amakudari, Japan will be sruted all over again.

  29. Ah, so.

  30. holy shit, that last character looks exactly like my tramp stamp!

  31. There’s a difference between consensual and forced action, Mr. Kamei. Dude would make a terrible Mr. Slave. Jesus Christ!

You mean him? Funny, I thought he’d do well at that job.

  32. God help Japan if these are the people now running the place.

  35. there doesn’t seem to be any libertarian leaning political parties in Japan. it seems there is a lack of any libertarian thought in Japanese culture.

    1. There really isn’t. Having lived there, I can tell you that the vast majority of Japanese are stewed in their very collectivistic culture. Libertarian ideas would be scoffed at.

  36. As my contribution to World Peace, I would like to suggest:

THAT SOMEBODY KILL THAT FUCKING SPAMMER POSTING ON EVERY THREAD. (10:17AM)

  37. …oh I get it, this is sortof like the “Death by Chocolate” dessert you get in the restaurant. It’s like it’s so good, you could just die. Right?
