It's Different When Obama Does It, Part 35
The anti-war group Code Pink, run by the unemployed Castro-loving activist Medea Benjamin, is "rethinking" its opposition to the war in Afghanistan, according to the Christian Science Monitor:
Code Pink, founded in 2002 to oppose the US invasion of Iraq, is one of the more high-profile women's antiwar groups being forced to rethink its position as Afghan women explain theirs: Without international troops, they say, armed groups could return with a vengeance - and that would leave women most vulnerable….
While the group hasn't dropped its call for a pullout, the visit convinced them that setting a deadline isn't in Afghanistan's interests, say Ms. Benjamin and fellow cofounder Jodie Evans.
"We would leave with the same parameters of an exit strategy but we might perhaps be more flexible about a timeline," says Benjamin. "That's where we have opened ourselves, being here, to some other possibilities. We have been feeling a sense of fear of the people of the return of the Taliban. So many people are saying that, 'If the US troops left the country, would collapse. We'd go into civil war.' A palpable sense of fear that is making us start to reconsider that."
Back when he was on MSNBC, Tucker Carlson asked Benjamin about her group's "reality tours" to Venezuela.

One of the reasons why obama is more likely to get us into a serious war. There will be no 'anti-war movement" with a black Democratic President. Obama could invade Canada and these clowns would find a way to justify it. Pathetic. And pathetic not because they are wrong in understanding what pulling out of AFghanistan would mean to the women who live there. But pathetic because they only discovered this issue after the Obamasiah became President.
What serious conflicts would Obama be likely to get us into? War with Iran? Do you think that would have been less likely in a McCain administration?
Iran is a big one. Yes, I think it would have been less likely under McCain. Obama has no credibility. The Iranians at least think they know he is not going to do anything and are thus more likely to miscalculate and do something even Obama can't ignore.
If I were good enough to predict where the next war will be, I would be in Vegas. But, the weaker we appear and the more Obama grovels and apologizes, the more likely it is that someone is going to miscalculate and do something that causes a war. Wars are not caused by belicosity. They are caused when one side miscalcuates and does something that it thinks it can get away with but can't.
Obama = Bush = McCain
When Obama is in charge, it isn't war-war.
When Obama rapes America, it isn't rape-rape.
Roman? Is that you?
Um, I believe he was channeling Whoopi.
Duh.
The same arguments for staying in Afghanistan can be applied to staying in Iraq. Which Code Pink is apparently still against, apparently because Afghanistan is the "good war".
Apparently should have left out the redundant "apparently".
"We would leave with the same parameters of an exit strategy but we might perhaps be more flexible about a timeline," says Benjamin
Goddamn I hate activists (even the fucking libertarian ones).
Why can't I get a preview so I don't screw up my tags?
Try dumping your cache.
Reality bites hard when you're a liberal...
Huh? It just gets ignored when you are a liberal.
"While the group hasn't dropped its call for a pullout, the visit convinced them that setting a deadline isn't in Afghanistan's interests..."
Whoa, who is editing this? The sentence actually reads "With a Democrat in office, they were convinced their opposition might harm the president."
"So many people are saying that, 'If the US troops left the country, would collapse. We'd go into civil war.' A palpable sense of fear that is making us start to reconsider that."
And that's why Code Pink is calling for an immediate increase of 30,000 troops in Afghanistan. We are also looking into military options for Saudi Arabia, where women have been living in fear for centuries now.
And throwing Israel under the bus. A place where women have the same rights as men.
Oh, you were joking 🙂
Well, one good thing has come out of this. They have absolutely shattered any credibility they had. If they don't think this screams "hypocrisy" they are more politically tone-deaf than the "president".
That's a nice thought, but how often are lefties called out on the carpet for being hypocrites?
the unemployed Castro-loving activist Medea Benjamin
Hate to be her kids.
That's hilarious.
This is Bush's fault. He didn't do a good job explaining the Taliban don't treat women nice.
Bush was a bloodthirsty ideologue. Obama is a thoughtful, kind soul, faced with a terrible dilemma.
dud
dud, duh...
whatever
Code Pink = retarded fetuses.
Afghanistan was not unresponsive.
WIN!!!
Second.
I vote to confirm.
Definite win.
I liked it better when it was about the economy.

Actually, this is case across nearly the entire Dem-affiliated spectrum. I mean, Obama is fucking them hard by not giving them anything they asked for, and their response is to destroy their own credibility instead of going after him. Like I've said before, it seems the left just can't let the right win the moron awards; they have to get that blue ribbon themselves.
I tend to think of the Democrats as the retarded party and the Republicans as the stupid party.
I'd give that nasty skank the bum's rush if she crashed my party.

Yeah, it's a race to the bottom of the death spiral. It's impressive to watch, but depressing when you contemplate the consequences.
OK, so let's call out Code Pink for a distinction that a wide majority of Americans have been making for years: that troops in Afghanistan is in our interest while invading Iraq never was. Notice how Code Pink wasn't founded in 2001 after war started in Afghanistan? Iraq was always their major target for opposition. To pretend like Obama came in and everything changed is bullshit, pure and simple. I may be mistaken, but I seem to recall that Code Pink didn't list Afghanistan on their front page until this year.
In short, Code Pink didn't protest Afghanistan for much of George Bush's term, so it isn't much of a change when they relax their attitude during Obama's administration.
True to some extent, but they have still protested the war in Afghanistan. Whether Iraq was the cause or merely the catalyst of Code Pink's formation doesn't change that.
What's disconcerting to me isn't that a women's anti-war group is concerned about women and civil war, but that that particular justification was almost never used during the Bush years. Now, the war is being marketed to the Dems on their terms by other Dems, and the risk (probably reality) is that the War on Terror becomes completely bipartisan.
Too many protestors are more concerned about elections than wars.
Despite my comment above, I don't disagree with this.
"It's Different When Obama Does It" is like that line from the British play in which a lady says something like "Of course the upper classes use the toilet. It's just that we do it in a different way."
"And our shit doesn't stink."
"...run by the unemployed Castro-loving activist Medea Benjamin..."
What do her employment status and affiliation with the Castro have to do with the validity of her political views? Would she be any less of a hypocrite if she were, say, working as a librarian and living in New Hampshire?
When you wrote that statement, did you see the irony as you pressed the 'Submit' button?
nope, and he used preview twice.
What do her employment status and affiliation with the Castro have to do with the validity of her political views?
Full-time political activists are likely to be narrow and unrealistic.
Castro supporters are likely to be idiots.
The views of an unemployed Castro-loving activist are, ipso facto, likely to be narrow, unrealistic and idiotic.
As the post demonstrates.
Aaaaaaaaand that's the same Code Pink whose rejection by some tea party guys as rally co-opters was here offered as proof of that icky prole movement's intractable hostility to libertarianism, yesterday.
Gold.
Good catch!
Also, the Tea Parties aren't primarily anti-Obama, or anti-whatever-Obama-is-doing. They're anti-bailout, anti-spending, anti-tax. They're not supposed to be an all-purpose bring-all-your-Obama-grievances events. If you're not protesting the war on spending grounds, you really don't belong at a tea party.
Too many drug war/police insanity supporters there for my tastes.
Yeah, the Tea partiers are more against the establishment factions of both parties.
Looks like Matthew Yglesias' prediction is coming to fruition: That Obama would "destroy the anti-war movement" in this country.
I wouldn't say he's destroying it so much as he's demonstrating that it was never really all that genuine of a movement.
It was always just a cudgel to bash Bush. Always.
Brilliant Discovery, Einstein.
Duh
A better Tucker/Benjamin exchange can be found here. They are debating her support for Chavez and his treatment of the press.
Snippet below with her explaining how the television station tried to overthrow the government.
CARLSON: How can a television?let's be real. You are throwing a very serious charge out there, a charge for which people have been killed in Venezuela. I am asking you a very simple question, explain how a television station can cause a coup? They said they did not like the president. Is that the same as pushing a coup? I mean, what the hell are you talking about?
BENJAMIN: They falsified information. They got people out on the street. They falsified footage that showed pro Chavez supporters killing people, which did not happen. They refuse to cover any of the pro Chavez demonstrations. When Chavez?
CARLSON: They refuse to cover pro Chavez demonstrations?
What do her employment status and affiliation with the Castro have to do with the validity of her political views? Would she be any less of a hypocrite if she were, say, working as a librarian and living in New Hampshire?
Seriously?
OK, which one you guys is fucking around with a sockpuppet? Really, you can do better that this.
Always wondered who's paying astroturfer Benjamin's freight as she hauls her parts around the country. must be another unemployed trust fund baby...
And yet this somehow did not occur to them as Iraq slid toward chaos in 2006/2007.
Nah... The Sadrist and Salafist theocracies formed probably would have been bastions of second-wave feminism.
Two things:
1) That shambling ghoul in the picture claiming that Sarah Palin is not a woman.
2) While the group hasn't dropped its call for a pullout...
"Paging Dr. SugarFree, Dr. SugarFree to ward 3, stat."
How is Ms. Benjamin unemployed? And why should that be italicized as an epithet?
Simply- it's not true.
She's a founding member of Global Exchange - and as best I can tell- active with the organization and it's stores. Her wikipedia page lists plenty of other activities that would seem to count as employment and material achievement.
I don't agree with Benjamin or Code Pink. But I'm not much more impressed with Mr. Moynihan when he launches off with stupid insults - that are untrue to boot ... 'for a magazine called Reason.'
(glug, glug, glug) Ahh! (burp)(hiccup)
Yo Medea, I'm really embarrassed for you, I'll let you finish, but Iraq is one of the best wars of all time.
