How Many People Attended the 9/12 March in DC?
Reader David Thomasson writes in:
Here's one way to think about it: Those who estimated 60,000 to 70,000 would have us believe that if a capacity crowd from the Orange Bowl would fill the yellow areas shown here.
He supplies this schematic, which suggests far more than the 75,000 estimate floating out there:
Other attempts at estimating the crowd size include Rand Simberg's two calculations that are very interesting and yield ranges from around 250,000 to 500,000. Hat tip: Mark Hemingway at The Corner.
And there's this Pajamas Media analysis, which yields an estimate of 850,000, the same number apparently that actually showed up for Obama's inauguration (after initial reports of 2 million). Having been in DC for both the 9/12 march and Obama's swearing-in, there's no question the latter event was much, much more populated. The article is very interesting for its history of estimates of attendance of Mall events.
I don't feel like I've got a real handle on numbers and estimates like this, but those lower six-figure figures (anywhere from 100,000 to about 250,000) seem to be pretty plausible.

No matter what the number actually is, that's a lot of racists in one area.
Is the Orange Bowl really to scale in that schematic? It seems kinda shrunk, to be honest.
There wasn't a pillow case to be had in the whole of Washington that day.
The picture looks like a human plunger came to dislodge a giant turd from the Capitol.
Just sayin'.
Thanks for this, Nick. I've seen discussions on leftist blogs that assume that it is very, very important that some of the initial estimates of the crowd were inflated. So I guess that makes it important, in a way.
I took my wife and kid down because my wife did the triathalon the next day and needed to register her bike and stuff.
The orange line trains were packed. More packed than for rush hour. Once in the city, Everywhere we went, we saw Tea-partiers. All very nice. One ran up and gave my toddler an American flag. More proof of their virtue: as the march wound down, they only seemed interested in restaurants that served beer.
There were at least 250,000, and 750,000 wouldn't surprise me.
It is still a s**tload of people. Most of the media outlets were pretty happy to reprint the same, lame AP report that came on Sunday, indicating that "tens of thousands" were at the protest.
This map might help.
Speaking of racists protesters in the hundreds of thousands, did anybody had a chance to read Maureen Dowd's diatribe against Joe Wilson?
In a nutshell, she said that Wilson called the president a liar because Wilson is a racist. By the same logic, I can assume Dowd calls Wilson a racist because she's a Marxist, since only Marxists use non sequiturs.
I haven't read Dowd in a long time. Nothing has changed: she needs a beef slap. And I'm just the guy to give it to her, if that will shut her up.
"In a nutshell, she said that Wilson called the president a liar because Wilson is a racist."
Yup, she said her imagination heard "You lie, boy" so that makes Wilson a racist.
All the lines were packed, even well into the night. The Orange Line was particularly bad because it was single-tracked between East Falls Church (the innermost Orange Line stop with at-station parking) and Ballston/MU, resulting in delays up to twenty minutes between trains.
There are lots of protests all the time. I have no idea about the right number, but the traffic seemed bigger than a Redskins game or normal protests. I didn't bother to go into town during the inauguration though.
The picture looks like a human plunger came to dislodge a giant turd from the Capitol.
Apropos, I feel.
You know what's nice? I haven't yet heard one cable news bobble-head call them "teabaggers."
But Chris, Ed, Keith and Rachel have not yet weighed in...
"In a nutshell, she said that Wilson called the president a liar because Wilson is a racist."
And Dowd is a dipshit, because only a dipshit screams racism at every criticism of a President.
Boy! This game is FUN!!!!!!!!! 😉
I just checked the scale. The Orange Bowl is a little smaller than it should be. From end-to-end the bowl is 730 feet. The distance between the first two streets that cross the Mall is 614.
Let's go with 300,000, and I'll be extra generous and assume that for everyone there there were 10 others who wished they were there. That represents... [drumroll]... a whopping 1% of the U.S. population.
And, most of those people probably already live in red districts, with many or most in red states.
IOW, they have little electoral power; about the only thing they could do (with numbers alone) is topple some already-weak Dems and elect Republicans who would be strong fiscal conservatives.
Who's doing the thinking for these people again? Oh, yeah: those who support MassiveOrIllegalImmigration such as DickArmey, GroverNorquist, and the Kochtopus. That's a terrific "braintrust" right there.
For much more, see my extensive coverage of the tea parties. The post about the one on Saturday is linked after the summary, and includes a lot of information on those behind the "movement".
P.S. In case anyone replies to this, their responses will almost assuredly be ad homs, thereby conceding my points and showing the childish, anti-intellectual nature of libertarians.
I'm waiting for someone to claim that although the protesters *did* fill that much area, they are conservatives so each takes up much more space than a normal person.
So, 35K tops.
Party on!
The Orange Bowl uses stadium seating; public streets don't. So yes, I could easily believe that a capacity Orange Bowl crowd would fill the yellow areas in the picture (especially if the Orange Bowl isn't drawn to scale).
You used to be able to rely on the Park Service numbers as most reliably objective, but they seem to have weenied out on making estimates since the Half Million Man March, which is the actual number they put Farakhan's march at before he threatened to sue them.
For the range to be reported from 35K to 2 million tells me there's a lot of people talking about this who don't know what the fuck they're saying.
Nick is shilling for big minimalist.
I had a view of the marchers from my terrace looking out onto Penn Ave. First sighting of the beginning marchers was around 9:30 a.m. These folks stretched crosswise across 8 lanes + the median lane. They kept on coming until around 11:30. Naw, not 60-70K. Had to be more than a filled-football stadium.
The Orange Bowl uses stadium seating; public streets don't.
And your ass spreads out in a seat, thinner when standing, so I am going with One Billion.
This New York Times story details the history of dishonest and fanciful crowd estimates for concerts on the Great Lawn in Central Park. Interesting stuff. Often security and the promotors just get together and make up a number they're all happy with.
Quit speaking of the Orange Bowl in the present tense. It was torn down already. They are now building a largely publicly financed retractable dome baseball stadium on its former site, for play in 2012. The 7,000 or so (soon-to-be-called) Miami Marlins' fans will have a nice place to stay out of the rain and/or summer broiler soon enough.
Well what's really important is the collective dick size of the protesters. The overwhelming quotient of whiteness plus obesity doesn't bode well.
Stadiums also vary by the steepness of seating. Compare the LA Coliseum or Michigan Stadium to a more modern facility. It is the same thing that happens in arenas (compare the broadly laid out MSG to any more modern facility, which are all much, much steeper).
Stupid methodology all around.
Well, the Orange Bowl (besides being a piece of shit in the middle of a shitty neighborhood) has lateral square footage that also includes the playing field which is almost 56,000 square feet and is not included in seating, obviously. Add any non seating areas like from the end and side lines to the seats, open end where no one sits, press boxes, and the structure itself that surrounds the seating area and it's stupid to even use it for comparison.
The thing that may separate the inauguration and tea party crowds is how close people are willing to stand to each other. One group would seemingly want to get as close to the new president as possible, to take pictures, hear the speeches, or whatever. The tea partiers probably spread out just a tad more because they were there to be one of many, carry signs, and apparently pick up after each other.
Apparently, someone reconstructed it in the heart of Washington, D.C. Just look at that Google image!
Yup, she [Maureen Dowd] said her imagination heard "You lie, boy" so that makes Wilson a racist.
Yes, she wrote that - which if true it would make her a schizophrenic, and would not ipso facto make Wilson a racist. I don't think she thought about that . . .
24AheadDotCom,
a whopping 1% of the U.S. population.
You miss the point - those 300,000 were the ones WILLING to travel to DC for the protest. Any good surveyor would immediately see the implications behind that fact - the Obamanable is truly in deep crap, or at least his unconditional minions in Congress and the Senate and his acting wife, Pelosi.
The stadium is not to scale at all. By my very rough estimate (I used widows paint to cut and past the photo of the field) if it were accurate the distance from the steps of the capitol to the Washington monument is about 4 tenths of a mile longer than it should be (aprox. 28 football fields rather than aprox 21)
Anyone who wants to figure this out in a more accurate fashion or correct any errors, fire away.
I allowed for the possibility that the 300,000 attendees might actually represent 3,000,000 sympathizers throughout the whole U.S.
I would be extremely surprised if it's even that high, especially of those sympathizers knew who was behind the rallies, their goals, and were informed what would happen if they got their way.
The majority of GOPpers support FDRPrograms. Try to take them away and see what happens.
And, if Xenu came down from the skies and made our system Randroid, what would happen next would not be pretty at all. We'd end up with something approaching VZ, which is the opposite of what the TPers want.
I allowed for the possibility that the 300,000 attendees might actually represent 3,000,000 sympathizers throughout the whole U.S.
It may actually represent more than that - considering how people interact with each other and the company they keep - that number may actually represent as much as 30,000,000 sympathizers, not 3,000,000.
Apart from this, you make the mistake of assuming most of these sympathizers are GOPers. There may be the majority (maybe 60%) but the rest were clearly conservative-leaning independents and conservative Democrats, and at least 1/2 the population of the US describe themselves as conservative. That is a huge population.
The majority of GOPpers support FDRPrograms.
This is true. What they may not accept is the creation of even more and bigger FDR-like programs.
I allowed for the possibility that the 300,000 attendees might actually represent 3,000,000 sympathizers throughout the whole U.S.
A ten-to-one sympathizer-protester ratio is so ridiculously low (as a quick comparison of, for example, anti-Iraq War polling numbers to protester numbers would reveal) that it demonstrates you're being deliberately and blatantly dishonest.
Go away, troll.
I think FTG has been hitting Reason's Private Stash.
There's a huge difference between conservative and Randroid, and the TPers are only going after the latter market (even if some don't realize that). The idea that 10% of the country would be open to extremist fiscal conservatism is beyond absurd, it's delusional. The Randroids are fringe even in the LP.
There's also the fact that the TP target market is only a certain economic segment; they're limiting themselves to those who are "TaxedEnoughAlready".
Here's a better metric: the number who marched is about equal to the number of people directly employed by the state of CA.
Good luck, you'll need it, etc. etc.
Lame, very lame. The race card is so overused, give it up.
AMAZING that the racism the left truly harbors under their skin is so close to the surface that they see it everywhere and in everyone. Remarkable that they are so obtuse to the fact that they insult the President by accusing everyone who disagrees with him of racism. Incredible that they cannot see how much that hurts those who suffer the effects of real racism, and helps the actual (as opposed to Dowd's imaginary) racists slip under the radar.
53% of Americans polled by Rasmussen last week disagree with the current proposals for reform of healthcare. Numerous town hall meetings occurred during the August recess and there was a lot of anger among the already over-taxed fellow citizens I like to call Patriotic Americans. I am against further government intrusion, and I am proud that all those people went to peacefully inform Washington DC that we have had enough. It doesn't matter if it was 560,000; 56,000; or 56 (the number of signers of the Declaration). The message is the same. We're sick of your theft and redistributive policies. It's our money; NOT YOURS. Get off us and let us prosper, like the Declaration gives us the right to try to do.
I like to call them severely misinformed Americans.
You learned this from Glenn Beck on Saturday, didn't you? I happened to be watching when he was asking his fellow would-be revolutionaries to find 56 members of Congress to, well essentially organize a coup and bring his vision of what America is supposed to look like back.
If a moral philosophy can be understood by 5 year-olds, it must be true!
The Declaration is not law. The constitution, which gives Congress the right to tax, is, however.
24headDOTCOM,
The idea that 10% of the country would be open to extremist fiscal conservatism is beyond absurd, it's delusional. The Randroids are fringe even in the LP.
Who said anything about "extremist" (whatever that is supposed to mean) fiscal conservatists? Who said the people in the protest were "extreme fiscal conservatives"? You just assumed that they are.
24AheadDotCom...
Your critical thinking cap is broken or it never existed. If it weren't for financial and other logistical concerns the number of people at the protest/rally would have easily be 30 times the actual number that showed up (which we'll probably never know just how many there were).
The Tsunami is coming and all of you Kool-Aid drinkers out there better either up your dosage to end it quick or kick the habit so that your deluded minds can get undrugged enough to survive when it 'hits'.
...good luck!
Tony,
I like to call them severely misinformed Americans.
... compared to you, who is NOT misinformed . . . right, Tony???
The constitution, which gives Congress the right to tax, is, however.
A Constitution that can be amended to correct that mistake, by the way...
The liberals are just like the Japanese in 1941; they grossly under estimate what True Americans feel and think. It is going to be very messy when your bubble burst, when you are seen in the bright light of facts and reality. We total reject your Politically Correct way of life, we feel no Guilt for what true racist like you do. We are Americans and we like our way of life. America, Love it or Leave
AMAZING that the racism the left truly harbors under their skin is so close to the surface that they see it everywhere and in everyone.
It may be a Schizophrenic disorder which libs share - I mean, Maureen Dowd was honest enough to write that she hears voices, telling her people say things they did not say.
MANY PEOPLE TO KICK COMMIE BUTT
I was there. I can tell you that there were hundreds of thousands of people in areas that the map above does not even have as in yellow. The tidal basin area in the middle, that huge area where there is no yellow on the map above, was absolutely packed with patriotic Americans protesting our current government and the road to Marxism that the Far Left, led by Obama, Pelosi and Reid, are following.
Patriots filled the steps all along the water, they filled the pathways and they filled the roads. The only place they weren't was in the water! And that area is much larger than the stadium depicted on the map. That area alone held well over 100,000 people.
The big yellow area just to the left of the Capitol was so tightly packed with people that it was very, very difficult to get thru it. That was where the highest density of the attending protesters was, and my bet is that there were well over a half a million people in that area alone!
We were in the trees to the right of the Botanical Garden all the way at the bottom where the road is. That was the closest empty area we could find, we were all the way at the road and the entire area between us and the Capitol was filled with people. We were so close to the southern fence just next to the road that we hung our signs and banners on the fence. That entire green area below the Capitol and to the right of the Botanical gardens was filled with people . There was well over a 100,00 people in that area alone, and it's not even depicted as being "yellow".
I walked the entire area, it took me almost an hour, and I can tell you that there were tens of thousands of people walking along the roads outside of the yellow areas, in the various buildings using the facilities, and walking to get food from restaurants blocks away during the event. Vendors were not allowed in the area, they were set up near the Washington Monument, and hundreds of people were walking there to get food and water all the time. The line to use the ladies room at the Museum was over an hour long, all day long.
See the road just south of the stadium that was super imposed over the map? Over a 100 port o potties were set up on the green area just south of that road, and the lines there were always long. See the green area to the left of that? It's not in yellow either, but there were tens of thousands of people there enjoying some shade. It was cloudy a lot of the day, but I still got a pretty good sunburn even though I was partly under the trees next to the Botanical Garden.
There were so many people coming into the event, even well after we had all Marched to the Capitol area, that the city shut down several highways. There were bus loads of people who had to get off their buses and walk from the highway to the metro to get into the city, and they just kept coming. I bet you didn't hear about that in the left wing media!
The number that the local ABC station reported was 1.5 MILLION people. The British media has reported that they believe there were 2 MILLION people or more attending, and I agree with them. They have less incentive to lie than our left wing media who love and protect Obama at all costs has.
I was there. I was on a Pennsylvania Avenue that was so packed with people I couldn't even get to Freedom Plaza, that was so packed that the police asked us to start marching an hour early to make room for more people. This was the largest protest ever held at the US Capitol, bar none. If you weren't there, don't even bother trying to argue about it.
I don't think it even matters how many people were there even if just 100 people showed up. Its a protest and worth hearing about!!! One of rights it the ability to protest and if I could have been there on 9/12 I sure would have been, so thanks to all of you that did attend thank you for standing up for those who could not!!!
There were at least two million. If all of them were proudly showing their guns the bad guys would resign. we could have a new government in the morning. Wake up America!! Next time bring your guns!!
Vince D - I was there as well & I agree with everything you just said. It was absolutely amazing!
Okay, Tulpa, now I'm laughing about that comment you made a couple weeks ago in the Big Circ thread. Well played.
I bet 400,000 were more throughout the day. Thing is there were also hundreds of other events nationwide that would more than likely surpass the 1 million mark easily. Being an anti-Statist is not racial either.
lets say there were 100,000 people down there. 80,000 hate that a brotha is president. the other may have issues about spending. i would like to know where these "activists" were when Bush was spending money on two wars with no plan to pay, tax cuts with no plan, and medicare plan d, with no plan to pay for these programs. not to mention the patriot act. which is the biggest gov't intervention in the history of the country. no outcry or tea parties for that. hmmmm? that's why anyone with a brain stem can see its about race. no matter what you people say. we know it. but its ok. we're use to it.
This post is a good example of when multi-linking is a bad thing.
sage, why do you think this is about race? its about overspending, loss of rights and gov't running around with no control.
I could care less about race at this point !
It is so easy for moronic libs to assign racism to EVERYTHING, and so freaking tiresome. Van, are you actually equating spending money to fight a war that terrorists brought to our shores, with spending money to bail out banks and auto companies that have pissed away money by being run into the ground by UNIONS? With a 787Billion dollar "stimulus" that has stimulated nothing but congress' buddy's pockets, and special interest groups like ACORN??? God, grow up.
I agree with Bill Sargeant. These wack libs in Washington must be from another planet! We are AMERICANS and will not be ignored by our Government while slowly succumbing to socialism!!!! Yes! bring your guns next time! If they wont pay attention as we exercise our first amendment rights, they will have to listen when we execute our second amendment rights!!!!!
Sage, For your information, there were people of all races there, black, brown, yellow and of course, including me and I am a Nez Perce, Native American red man. So, don't try playing your assinine race card crap!
Sage,
Really, come on now. Racists? I don't think so. That's just my Native American (yaqui/osage) opinion.
we all know the media is going to downsize the amount of people, just like they inflated the amount at the messiah's inauguration....that's just the nature of the beast. ....http://cooperscopy.blogspot.com/
I hate these progressives. You all aren't even Liberals... You're progressives. Progress used to be a good word until liberals went too far to the left.
The Washington Area Transit Authority keeps records of Metrorail, the subway in DC, ridership. They issued a press release on Monday,Jan. 20, 2009, the day of Obama's inaugural and another the day before crowing about the record ridership. I have emailed them asking for ridership data for Sept. 12, 2009, but they haven't had time to answer yet.
Fox news should ask them for it. Not that the numbers really matter. Obama, his cohorts and congress know the truth, no matter how the spin it.
Liberal also used to be a fine word until it started meaning theft and slavery instead of freedom.
This argument about the numbers is bogus. The number of people who will fit on the National Mall has been subject to grid analysis in the past and they now have a formula that yields accurate numbers (at least down to the hundreds of people attending an event). I don't have the schematic myself, but I'm sure someone does.
it was still more people than the million man marchthe only diffrance was onlo two people had to miss work for the million man march
We are not racists! We are proud patriots. We are from Red States and Blues States. We are from all different walks of life. We are of all colors.
God Bless America!
As opposed to all those Americans who are fake because they disagree with you?
Nope, no racism here!
Reading the hateful liberal comments reminds me that if this were the 1960's and black were marching with martin luther king, they would say things like: The overwhelming quotient of blackness plus obesity doesn't bode well.
There wasn't a watermellon to be had in the whole of Washington that day
No matter what the number actually is, that's a lot of niggers in one area.
Liberals are the racists. Listen to what you are writing. You have held the black man down long enough, you have used race and fear as a way to hold on to the vote. It all shows now. You are scared because conservative are not the racists as you have tried to portray them. Don't act like you give a shit about them and use the race card to control them. We conservatives believe in equal rights and freedoms for everyone. You liberals are the ones that are afraid that the minorities will find this out.
this is for the first comment, you sir, are racist, for even brining race into the picture. Go crawl back under the rock you crawled out from under.
I was there and my gut feeling says there had to be over 100,000. I know this is like guessing how many jelly beans are in the jar, but I think if there really was 1 million people it would have taken us much longer to get out of there when it was over. As it was it cleared out in relatively quick and easy fashion. There were some log jams at the metro station but in 15-20 minutes we were on board and moving happily along.
It was the nicest most polite crowd you could ever imagine. If you happened to bump in to somebody it was "I'm so sorry!" and "Hey no problem brother!". Smiles, courtesy everywhere. Not a foul moment ever. Even standing in line for the Porta-potty was nice!
Let's do this EVERY YEAR!
I don't know what inauguration you attended but it wasn't Obama's if you think there were less people than the yellow portions of your map. I was there and people were packed all the way back past the Washington Monument almost to the street that runs in front of the Lincoln Memorial. That didn't even take into account the people standing in the streets that could not get in after they closed the gates to the lawn. At least don't straight up lie about things just to make your numbers look big.
did any one look at the trash left behind after the inauguration? compare that with the pristine state of d.c after 9/12 now answer this. who cares more about the enviroment?
..we outnumber you,we are the no longer silent majority,we believe in freedom, liberty and God..and the 2nd amendment. All of you that portray us as bigots,racists...have lost already. Its the only thing you have left.Just join us in taking back our country from corruption..from the left and the right..WE are ALL Americans,WE ALL want a government that we can trust to be honest...thats what it boils down to..
Giant Turd. Now thats funny.
Nick at least gives us a starting point....and we get past "tens of thousands".
Incredible. O'Reilly had it at 75,000 tonight. If Fox...and they were there....really believe 70,000...they need to say it. I was there and we started marching 90 minutes ahead of schedule because we needed space. We marched to the capitol and speakers started right away. After 1 hour and 40 minutes we were told from the speaker's stand that the marchers were backed up 12 blocks....walking on an 8 lane road and some spilling over on the side walk. We can't let this go. We need a good number...not this vague "tens of thousands".
You want to work with me, let me know. John Beasley, Ph.D.
You're right, that IS a lot of racists in one place (on a NORMAL day). You've got Robert Bryd (D) who is/was the Grand Wizard of the KKK, van Jones - oops, I guess he left... 🙂
My dad can beat up your dad! Na na na na na naaaa!
I know you are, but what am I?
Is this a Pee Wee Herman episode?
so says some that there was only 100,000 to 250,000 due the math video count the time line of marchers there was at least 3,000,000 if not more more than the nagr. or million minus
or any other thankyou the health-death care so called will only make it worse than it is 936 billion just to get it started i imagen that just cump change to some or should i remind some that alqueda and hamas is the same thing and who gave them money after they started the fight or who pardon them after the uss cole bombing read this is not some idiot i spend most of my time reading the right book and praying for people
Looks like Washington Metro Area Transit Authority posts daily ridership numbers, but they come out about 5 days after the fact. Check here on 9/17 and you should see 9/12's data for rail and bus: http://www.wmata.com/rail/disruption_reports/archived_service_reports.cfm
San Francisco Chronicle showed a big photo of a crowd of 12,000 that attended a music event. But not much on DC event. Remember that there were a number of events across the country. Nobody seems to have totaled those up. Could be two million nationwide. Journalism is a dying trade.
To quote Hillary..."We have the right to protest ANY administration!!!"
why racist? because there is nothing else to explain a crowd of fat crackers protesting a loss of liberty and govt. spending a year after the president that butchered the constitution AND looted the treasury has left office. Yep, the G.O.P. wrote the book on spend-and-repress...oh, and don't forget to kill brown people.
For comparison, the 'Million Man March' in 1995 was estimated to be 850,000 strong (Wikipedia). Kind of makes this protest seem small.
I'm curious about how often protests of protests of various sizes occur. My gut feeling is that this one is nothing special, and considering the major media push for it, it could be a bit of a disappointment.
Two million, Nick. That is the number the right wing blogosphere went with. Two million. One would think that would warrant a notation. And leaders of the right wing blogosphere said ABC was that source for the two million figure, which was a complete fiction.
Fire department estimate is at most 75,000. The 9/12 protest did not even fill up the mall which had two other large rallies plus the usual Washington tourists. How did a protest of 75,000 people become two million? Because there is no limit to conservative lies.
Several independent reports show the rally crowd stopping before third street.
The organizer of the rally both decided to use communist symbolism to advertise the event ("We've been studying and applying the tactics of the left for a long time, and although we despise their bad ideas, they have us beat when it comes to symbolism, activism and dominating the public debate. We can learn from them and co-opt their symbols, some of their messages and even their tactics.") and then made up the lie that ABC News was saying a crowd of two million.
When will the jungle bunnies stop playing the race card every time somebody criticizes their "brotha" ?
3/4 of the posts are debating the attendance record, who cares? It is very difficult to discuss the engineering involved in the draining of a swamp when your up to your rear end with alligators. This statement makes as much sense as to many of the posts. Question! Why were those people there?
The Declaration is not law. The constitution, which gives Congress the right to tax, is, however.
Wrong! The Constitution doesn't give Congress any rights whatsoever - it grants powersto Congress. Rights are retained by the States and the People, and are either recognized or not recognized by the Constitution - not "given" to anyone.
It's not nearly as many racists as showed up for the inaugeration. Most of them voted for Obama because he was black.
Keep throwing the race card you ignorant turd.
Yep, the G.O.P. wrote the book on spend-and-repress...oh, and don't forget to kill brown people.
How I live for the day when all the ignoramuses of the U.S. wake up and realize that RAY NAGIN killed those people in New Orleans by failing to have a plan, and the Governor of Louisiana (BLANCO) finished them off by not contacting the Feds in a timely fashion. They had at least a 48 hour warning to GET OUT. They stayed. Is the National Guard supposed to come in uninvited and say "c'mon" Hell to pay, either way. So get off your racist tirade about New Orleans already. It's tiresome and false.
@Bo Cefus:
Keep throwing the race card you ignorant turd.
I'm just throwing it back in the faces of those who threw it first. They can dish it out, but they sure don't like to take it.
And I'm not as ignorant as the turds who threw it first, mo'f**ker
We were the MILLION MAD MOB MARCH !
I was at the March on Saturday. I have lived in the DC area for 20 years and been to all Inagurations except Obama. I also attended The Victory Parade in '91 celebrating our heroes of Desert Storm. The estimate report of people then was appx. 800,000. There were as many people there for The March on DC. IMHO.
No one was prepared this this amount so they do not want to admit the number. This was obvious when Metro decicded to do repairs that weekend.
However, people took it in sride. All the Metro and DC Officers that I spoke with said this was the calmest crowd they had ever seen.
There were people of all colors, all political parties, and all sexual orientations in attendance and carrying signs.
"Angry Mob?" I think not. The angry mob were the protestors that I had to shield my child from during the 2000 Inaguration of George W. Bush.
Limited Govenment IS Common Sense.
Why is it racist when people care about their country? I wasn't there because I had other commitments but I would of been. I'm concerned about having national healthcare and cap n trade because in the long run thousands of jobs will be lost in the healthcare industry and others. That includes my job as an ultrasound tech. I remember back in 1993 I couldn't find a job because of Hiliary care.
I heard that the University of Illinois did a spatial estimate and came up with the figure of 1.7 million. I am attempting to verify.
This March On Washington was held on the weekend when most people have a day off from work. The Million Man March was held on a weekday and only seven people missed work!
According to the NY Times and the Huffington Post four people attended the rally
Thanks to Glenn Beck and Fox News, the unrepresented silent majority is finally getting it together.
I love it, I'm energized by the great people involved with the tea-party protests, and the possibility that things can really change in Washington.
Lefties bad-mouth this group and downplay the importance of this protest at their own peril.
My husband was there, and has been there for many rallys and compared the crowds. He said there were no more than 35,000 people.
I've been there when there were 100,000 people, and believe me, there were no where near that many people at the tea party rally.
At any rate, I still can't figure out what their agenda was, the message was so confused. Their mission just seems to be to blow off steam, as far as I can tell.

probly a million if you compare the above pic with USA today
If we don't believe our eyes and agree that there is more than "tens of thousands" then what hope do we have of analyzing why these people - many middle aged - came all the way to Washington, D.C.? Truth is a difficult commodity to obtain when you are not interested in searching for it. It is so much easier to accept the mainstream assertions that they are all racists and write them off.
All I want to say is Our new Battle cry is
LAME DUCK 2010
What is the source for the cut-off on the mall? The yellow looks to go to about 8th street but according to Politifact, the Washington DC Fire Department rep Pete Piringer (unofficially) claimed it went to about 3rd street. For those who don't want to google map, that's about to the middle of the imposed stadium.
Are there any pictures/news articles that support it going to 8th street?
I'm calling serious, major league BULLSH!T here. There is NO WAY the orange bowl is to scale is that drawing. That is ridiculour propaganda. I've been to the Captial Building countless times and I've be to football games. That isn't even CLOSE to scale. This picture is an absurd, and clumsily crafted LIE.
I was there. We sat on the grass by the Capitol and they kept coming in from Federal Square for an additional 2 hours. Lets wait for the Elections and I think we will see how many tea partiers there are. Not Racist just because we don't believe in a large govt. just realists.
Upon further review, 3rd street is not even half way to the imposed stadium, I don't think it even makes it to the stadium. If you take the Fire Department's report of it going to 3rd street at face value, this severally truncates the diagram.
Anyone have pictures or reports that suggests otherwise?
I really see no need to exagerate, anything into the tens of thousands is an impressive gathering.
Sorry guys, I've got to eat a little crow here. Actually the orange bowl IS roughly to scale in that map, based on the estimates of the building sizes (of the OB & the Capital) that I was able to find. So I'm wrong there. (Shocking, I know! But it happens!)
I've still got some issue with the estiamted AREA of the crowd and the relative crowd density, based on photos I've seen, so I still don't think 1.5 Million, or 800,000 is at all reasonable, but I'll have to admit that 70-80,000 may in fact be a bit low.
(I may be a liberal, but my credability is worth more to me than scoring partisan points.)
Regardless of the actual size of the crowd the number could easily be multiplied 10-20x over and you MIGHT have a conservative estimate of the number of concerned citizens who would have been there if they could have been...somewhere around 2 - 3 million...The actual numbers will be counted in 2010
Who really cares what Maureen Dowd thinks about anything.
Given that she writes for the NYT, that alone makes her opinion quite irrelevant.
She should try to get a job writing for a real newspaper.
Everytime a left winger, or anyone for that matter, refers to the chosen one as the first african american President, they are making a racist statement. Obama is as much black as he is white and they only refer to him as the first african american President because of the way he looks. If he had lighter skin and straighter hair, like his mother, they wouldn't be referring to him as such. As a result, anytime they start screaming racist, they are simply employing their usual double standard. If any one is racist it is certainly the left much more so than the right.
Considering the field does not contain any of the crowd, can you condense it to show just how much crowd it takes to fill 73,000???? Looks to me like we had 10 times that crowd, what is the matter with you people??? Yes, at least 10 people would have liked to been there for every one that was, BUT that does not mean we are the only ones you have to contend with. Likely, these are the folks who RAISE you food, think about that one.
These people are not racist, i am so sick of that one..when all else fails call everybody a racist. They are Freedom fighters.
Come join our cause!

So we have the liberal operatives that accuse all who oppose the direction of the country of being racist. How simple on all levels.
If only I had the tin-foil hat concession that day.
What a load of hooey. A half million people showed up to protest the Iraq war several times. Look at the good that good. 70,000 guys came to protest - what? - still cant figure it out from the signs - and what good will that do? Zilch. You think it's a movement that amounts to much? Yeah. Um. That's why Obama won by nine million votes and more than a hundred electoral, and why he will win with more than that in three year's time. Get used to him. He's around for eight years, they're going to be naming airports and schools after him all over this country, and you guys will be foaming at the mouth. Democracy sucks when you get creamed in an election, doesn't it?
LOL 'university of i cant remember', just heard that hahahah, seriously glenn beck has mental problems
Sage you're pathetic and have a closed mind, there is something far more serious going on here than racism.
Silly Tea Baggers, lying about protest numbers, submitting fake photos...as Joe Wilson says: You Lie!
The only people who seem to see the president as Black, are Blacks. The more you throw the race card, the more people like me are getting sick of it. Take off your color'ed glasses and realize it's about policy not skin color. Get over yourselves!
I don't get it. There is no racist content that I'm aware of in the 9/12 March. People who are calling the marchers "racist" are just race-baiting, and therefore must be racist themselves. There is no other possible explanation.
Sage, I think your statement that folks who have conviction and are speaking out about what they believe in has NOTHING to do with racism. It's about putting our country back on track.
oh, it's so nice, you gotta see it twice:
"What a load of hooey. A half million people showed up to protest the Iraq war several times. Look at the good that did. 70,000 guys came to protest - what? still can't figure it out from the signs. Never saw so many angry winners. A little freedom of speech in action and you guys go all wobbly.
Given that the comparative number of Metrorail riders year to year for 9/12/09 was 74,851 either a lot of people walked, took buses, or flew or the 70K estimate is pretty good. You simply don't get huge crowds (over 750K) in DC with a lot of Metro riders.
Racism is a cop out to finding a good argument. the republican Head is Michaele Steel (black) comments like urs keep racism alive
Sage - you're pretty ignorant! Oh, wait, now you'll call me a racist! LOL - Leftists = Such losers!
Can anyone tell me how many of this unruly mob were arrested? Whats that? Zero - you mean out of all these ANGRY racists - no one committed a crime? Hmmm - put ten war protesters togther in Times Square - I am sure that at least seven of them would be mornic enough to do something stupid - what's that? Ih right, having been an NYPD police at such a lefty rally a good percentage were arrested. Leftists do not understand the term "Peaceful Assembly" - but the moment someone disagrees with them - we're an angry mob. Get over yourselves! You voted in an idiot - no matter if he was white or black - heck, Carter is a moron - and he's whiter than me!
Those crying racism might want to consider an interesting report from a black blogster which was quoted in the Washington Express (a liberal paper) today:
"The DC Tea Party Protesters aren't the raging racists the media portrays them to be. We were pleasantly surprised at the number of tea party visitors at our booth and the Black Family Reunion Celebration overall."
URL: http://www.blackgirlgrown.com/2009/09/17/lessons-from-ncnws-black-family-reunion/
Incidentally, the aforementioned Black Family Reunion Celebration took place on the Mall between 7th and 14th. This is why that area is so unoccupied in the pictures. It's not that there weren't enough Tea Party protesters to fill that space, but instead because the Black Family Reunion didn't draw well, but their space was reserved, so the overflow Tea Party people spilled out on the side of the Mall.
Before another person here makes a claim that the protesters were all racists, all middle-aged white, all simple-minded without a grasp of the issues, take a look at the pictures at:
http://912dc.dhwritings.com
Cheyanne wrote in one of the messages above, "There were people of all colors, all political parties, and all sexual orientations in attendance and carrying signs." I saw that too, and that comes across in the pictures.
The racist thing is stale now. Obama won by accusing anyone who opposed him of being racist. He got into office with the help of over 47 million white voters. So that argument is garbage. The people are against what Obama turned out to be - a socialist, intent on turning our country into a dictatorship.
I wish I could have been there. They might try to downplay the number of people and dismiss it in the mainstream media, but that many protestors cannot be ignored. May Lord bless America and have mercy on our nation.
I used to be a stay-at-home-mind-my-own-business atheist, but George W. Bush turned me into an evangelical atheist. Now I want to attack religion at every opportunity, and show it up for the destructive force it is in the world.
