Here are some pictures of signs I snapped at yesterday's march on Washington. As noted elsewhere at Reason.com, the signs and messages were virtually all handmade, and many were funny.

Check back tomorrow for a Reason.tv segment on the day's activities.

    “Your mom hates freedom”

    LOL

  2. mediageek   16 years ago

Call me juvenile, but the “Your mom hates freedom” shirt is awesome.

  3. SOFL Hockey Fan   16 years ago

    “Obanumism”….Damn!, why didn’t I think of that?
    LMAO!

  4. Some Guy   16 years ago

I’ve seen way more clever satirical Che shirts than that.

  5. Brett L   16 years ago

    1. I always thought W’s horns would be bigger.

    2. Could the Che imagery please just die? I’m glad people have spoken up against the college-leftist-hipster-hero-worship, but I’d just as soon never see his picture, or the stylization of his picture to tie political enemies to him, ever again.

  6. Nipplemancer   16 years ago

‘your mom hates freedom’ i love it.

  7. Rhywun   16 years ago

Could the Che imagery please just die?

No way. That shit (the ‘pro’ version) is *everywhere*. The more mockery it gets, the better.

  8. Joe M   16 years ago

So, based on those pictures, it looks like about thirty people were at the protest Is that accurate?

  9. hmm   16 years ago

Thirty one. Your mom was there. Hating freedom.

  10. Rhywun   16 years ago

I’ve seen Che tattoos in porn. It really destroys the mood.

  11. Bill   16 years ago

I love the ‘Your mom hates freedom’ t-shirt too. I’m ordering one now: http://tshirtinsurgency.com/your-mom-hates-freedom-t-shirt

  12. Marc   16 years ago

FreedomWatch must have spent a lot of money to get these people to look like that. Clever bastards.

  13. Lester Hunt   16 years ago

My sign would have said “DO YOU EVEN KNOW HOW MUCH A TRILLION IS?”

  14. Anon   16 years ago

Funny, I don’t remember these types of shirts and signs when the Patriot Act was signed or when we began dumping a trillion dollars into Iraq. “Your mom hates freedom” indeed.

  15. Suki   16 years ago

I like the anti-Che imagery. Did this one of Maddox as Pirate Che make it into the big party?

  16. PapayaSF   16 years ago

Lester Hunt: I like “Nobody tell Obama what comes after a trillion.”

  17. Tim Cavanaugh   16 years ago

The “To Serve Man” alien, who I think predates the Telosians, is the highest achievement of TV/movie aliens. All other alien developments have been needless. Alien would have been just as good if the alien had looked like Richard Kiel in “To Serve Man.” E.T., Star Wars, The Thing, I’ll bet even District 9 would all have been just as good if the aliens had looked like Richard Kiel in “To Serve Man.”

  18. James Anderson Merritt   16 years ago

Heh heh heh. Obama as Kanamit. Very nice.

Yes, “The Cage” (original ST pilot featuring the butt-head Talosians of which TC speaks) was filmed in 1964, while “To Serve Man” aired on the Twilight Zone early in 1962, and was probably filmed late in 1961 or very early in 1962.

  19. Too Old I Guess...   16 years ago

This is embarrassing. Could someone explain to this obviously unhip older person what’s funny about “Your mom hates freedom?” (I got all the other signs…)

  20. JB   16 years ago

Here is a sign I would have liked to see:
As a community organizer, how many girls did Obama help sell into sexual slavery?

He said to judge him by the people around him. Van Jones and Acorn show that Obama has been judged, and been found lacking.

  21. Episiarch   16 years ago

The “To Serve Man” alien, who I think predates the Telosians, is the highest achievement of TV/movie aliens.

    Wrong, Tim. Three letters: ALF.

  22. Hazel Meade   16 years ago

I kinda like the one that says “reduce your government footprint”. Makes a nifty and original point.

  23. Paul   16 years ago

My favorite was the ‘slush fund’ sign. Not funny, but just annoyingly to the point and true.

  24. Xeones   16 years ago

The more mockery it gets, the better.

The highest, purest mockery is, of course, trust fund babies shelling out beaucoup bucks for designer Che merchandise because he was, like, a hero, man.

  25. air jordan shoes   16 years ago

Thank you very much. I am wonderring if I can share your article in the bookmarks of society,Then more friends can talk about this problem.

  26. robc   16 years ago

    Too old,

Its in the form of a classic “Your Mom” joke, many of which arent funny. Plus, it has an element of truth to it, considering seniors like their pork (SS, Medicare, new drug benefits, etc, etc).

Um, so its not really funny if explained.

  27. Rich   16 years ago

Could someone explain to this obviously unhip older person what’s funny about “Your mom hates freedom?”

    Ask your mother.

  28. FrBunny   16 years ago

Maybe I thought too much about the Mom T, but I thought it was a snarky response to people claiming your opinions mean that you hate freedom. As in:

Douche: “You’re protesting health care? You must hate freedom!”
Witty, well-groomed blogger: “Your mom hates freedom.”

  29. R C Dean   16 years ago

The best pictures were the ones contrasting the squeaky-clean scene after the Tea Party with the garbage-strewn scene after the inauguration.

  30. JW   16 years ago

RC–Are you saying that the Tea Partiers are neat and fastidious? I don’t think you want to go there.

  31. Neu Mejican   16 years ago

The best pictures were the ones contrasting the squeaky-clean scene after the Tea Party with the garbage-strewn scene after the inauguration.

Were they adjusted for the difference is scale?

    ;^)

  32. Neu Mejican   16 years ago

Just found the “garbage comparison” pics.
Seems they are pictures of the national mall.

iirc, the 9/12 march was not on the national mall, just saying.

  33. Russ 2000   16 years ago

He said to judge him by the people around him. Van Jones and Acorn show that Obama has been judged, and been found lacking.

Was obvious the first time he and Rahm Emmanuel were seen together.

  34. JB   16 years ago

iirc, the 9/12 march was not on the national mall, just saying.

It ended with an hours long rally on the Mall.

Leftists are not only thugs, but pigs as well.

  35. Neu Mejican   16 years ago

    JB,
It ended with an hours long rally on the Mall.

    OK. Thanks for the clarification.

Leftists are not only thugs, but pigs as well.

    Only “leftists” attended the inauguration?
I don’t think that is even close to true.
So, are you saying that among the attenders of the inauguration, only the leftists left their garbage? Again, I don’t think that a realistic assumption.

Maybe you are using the term “leftist” to me “those who ‘left’ their garbage?”
    ;^)

  36. NM copy editor   16 years ago

    “to me” = “to mean”

    Sheesh

  37. Neu Mejican   16 years ago

    JB/RC,

    http://politics.theatlantic.com/2009/09/the_other_912_rally.php

two-thirds of the National Mall was filled by an entirely separate event on Saturday that had nothing to do with protesting the president. September 12 just happened to be the 24th-annual Black Family Reunion, which ran from 7th Street all the way to the Washington Monument.

    FYI.

  38. Neu Mejican   16 years ago

    Also,

Weren’t the trash cans removed during the inauguration? Seems that I remember that. Now, of course, it seems people could have taken their trash home or whatever, but this is just another one of those “my side is prettier, smarter, more well mannered, and well-endowed than those scum that disagree with me” things that bugs the hell out of me and prevents substantive discourse in politics.

  39. !   16 years ago

Leftists are not only thugs, but pigs as well.

It was TEH MAN, man! The pigs throw down the trash after certain rallys to make the good people look bad.

  40. !   16 years ago

Weren’t the trash cans removed during the inauguration?

Yes, they usually do that when a bunch of terrorist supporting Leftists are occupying DC. Just like with those war protestors.

They did not have to do that with the Tea Partiers.

j/k at 1:19pm, but not now

  41. JB   16 years ago

NM, the Tea Party rally was on the front-end of the Mall where they took those pictures.

Sorry, but at this point many of Obama’s supporters are Leftists and that overlaps with the people that voted for him. Sure there were the ignorant and retarded (that includes many of the reason staffers and commenters that voted for him), but the Left came out heavy for Obama.

  42. !   16 years ago

but the Left came out heavy for Obama.

I thought it was everybody but the racists?

  43. Neu Mejican   16 years ago

    JB,

Ok. Of course all this is beside the point. The 130 tons of garbage collected after the inauguration was 130 tons more than should have been, but of course, your picture doesn’t show the 20,000 or so volunteers that helped clean up the mess after the inauguration (and was taken before those volunteers started working), nor does it point out the lack of garbage cans, the difference in the size of the crowd, etc…

The fact that the whole mall was clean on a day with 1 million people there on a day with trash cans while a couple of ounces per person were left after 2 million people showed up on a day with no trash cans may inform why there was a difference in the degree of mess between the two rallies.

Face it. If you are pushing this issue, you are trying to demonize the other side rather than discussing the substantive issues that separate the two sides.

  44. Valhalla   16 years ago

“Your mom” is a sarcastic rejoinder that is derived from the older phrase “your mama.”

It’s like “your mama” for the age of irony. Instead of delivering it in an overtly sarcastic tone, “your mom” is delivered in a dry, deadpan tone. “Mom” just doesn’t have the saucy quality to it that “mama” has.

I’m not sure if having it explained will help you understand why it’s funny, because that is the nature of humor. But believe me, it is funny.

  45. Carlos Tevez   16 years ago

SBABG had a whole bunch of awesome photos up from the demonstration, too. I love the one, “Do I look like an ATM?”

    http://www.sbabg.org/2009/09/13/sbabgs-photos-from-the-huge-9-12-march-on-washington-in-dc/

  46. JB   16 years ago

NM, I think the issue is a bit silly, but the inauguration folks made more of a mess and that seems pretty obvious.

There is a reason they want government doing all things including wiping their asses: they are lazy and won’t do it themselves.

  47. Neu Mejican   16 years ago

    JB,

You’re still doing it. You try to attribute your difference of opinion with them to some sense of your own superiority. You confuse the difference in policy position with a difference in character. Pretty lame.

  48. JB   16 years ago

NM, it comes from all the Lefties I know. And I know tons and nearly every one of them came from families that had more money than mine growing up. They are used to having things handed to them and they think life should be that way.

My policy positions are superior. I’m not sticking a gun in their faces demanding their money. That’s what they are doing to me.
