A Congressional Venceremos Brigade
There are admirable goals behind the Congressional Black Caucus visit to Cuba—ending America's failed embargo policy and lifting all travel restrictions to the communist dictatorship—but it is a shame that those pushing the policy change, like Rep Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) and Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.), are long-standing apologists for the Castro regime. Take, for instance, this CNN interview with Lee, during which the Congresswoman evades a straight-forward question about human rights abuses and lack of democratic institutions on the island.
The Politico reports that "Lee and others heaped praise on Castro, calling him warm and receptive during their discussion."
"It was quite a moment to behold," Lee said, recalling her moments with Castro. "It was almost like listening to an old friend," said Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Il.), adding that he found Castro's home to be modest and Castro's wife to be particularly hospitable. "In my household I told Castro he is known as the ultimate survivor," Rush said.
Rep. Laura Richardson (D-Calif.) told MSNBC that Americans misunderstand Cuba, likely suffering from false consciousness provoked by sinister reports in the capitalist media. "The things I had heard of Fidel, it's almost like you would think he is horrible, he's angry, he would hate America," she said. "But everything I saw and witnessed was completely the opposite to (sic) that."
Rep. Lee, a former acolyte of Maurice Bishop's New Jewel Movement in Grenada, believes that increased trade with Havana might result in a cure for my diabetes. "They found a vaccine for hepatitis B; they're working on some HIV/AIDS vaccines, for meningitis… When you look at the (possiblities for) cancer discoveries, the medicine for diabetes….I was very excited."

What's that old Soviet phrase about "useful idiots" in the West?
Why do the Cuba apologists always bring up medicine?
I'm so sure Cuba is at the cutting edge of HIV vaccine research.
Because it lays the foundation for urging the U.S. to socialize medicine.
Rep. Laura Richardson (D-Calif.) told MSNBC that Americans misunderstand Cuba, likely suffering from false consciousness provoked by sinister reports in the capitalist media.
So Cuba really isn't a man-made Caribbean hell-hole?
Democrats fawning over dictators? Unpossible!
The old saying a stopped clock is right twice a day applies here. Free trade and ending the embargo with Cuba IS a good idea. However, Ms. Lee is a strong contender for most stupid person in Congress, and these days that's quite a distinction, as there is much competition. Our country would be a much better place if there was a basic educational test required for admission to Congress.
Cuba is an anarcho-capitalist utopia, just like Libya. They have anti-gravity flying cars and robot servants.
I looked for a simple solution to this problem and realized that there wasn't one. I then had a template custom made for my needs and was so happy with the outcome.
Longtime Castro stooges still shilling for Castro? Shocking!
"Why do the Cuba apologists always bring up medicine?"
John Derbyshire said it best "wherever there is a boot on someone's face, there is a Western Liberal there to explain how the face has universal literacy and free healthcare." Or something to that effect.
The sad thing is that there really is a "liberal" position. You know the one that says we should be free. The one that mistrusts government police power and but beleives in helping the less fortunate. Sadly, no one believes in that anymore. If they did, they would hate people like Castro.
"Why do the Cuba apologists always bring up medicine?"
Because we should all long for the day when advanced medical care is available to all*.
*party officials and medical tourists
Who's stupider--these politicians or the people that elected them?
Celebrities support Fidel too! Bonus points if you can take the absurdly simple step of figuring out whose name at least that's parodying.
Fidel? He was a really nice guy.
"John Derbyshire said it best "wherever there is a boot on someone's face, there is a Western"
I love John Derbyshire. He responds if you email him. And he's a math guy too.

You don't know what you're talking about. Cuba already has a cure for HIV/AIDS.
I visted Castro once he kept putting me in his ass over and over again. I found him to be a very warm man.
Then his wife served tea. She is such a great hostess.
How can they work on a AIDS vaccine when there are practically no HIV infections in Cuba?
Say? Where'd my left nut go?
"In my household I told Castro he is known as the ultimate survivor," Rush said.
Yeah, he "survived" democratically elected and constitutionally limited American presidents!
Kudos, Fidel! Dictatorship has its perks, you hairy, anus-less dinosaur.
Fuck it. Let's invade Cuba and liberate those poor people. Bet Castro wouldn't expect that one after all these years.
"Why do the Cuba apologists always bring up medicine"
Because Castro's done a lot of work on his Potemkin hospitals, and nobody's done much work to debunk them.

Robot servants of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your boundary limitation programming!

I've got just the invasion point picked out... a little beach called Playa Larga. Playa Giron might work, too.

And what standing does CNN or any members of our government in the USA have to question whether trying to normalize relations with Cuba "condones" their human rights abuses.
The list of abuses by Amnesty Int'l the anchor provides contained things that our government does in the name of national security (torture, imprisonment without charges, intimidation of dissidents) . I don't see CNN pushing the meme that maybe when the USA systemically engages in said abuses we are condoning them as well.
Furthermore, despite Moynihan's assertion, she never evades anything. She is asked a question (do you think that normalizing relations means condoning?) and she explicitly says "NO". Which is true. Treating Cuba the same we we treat for example China would not be condoning Cuba's actions any more than China actions are being condoned.
Why exactly is Cuba being singled out? Don't we have trade and normal relations with China which engages in the exact same human rights abuses?
The whole way that the media and our politicians deal with Cuba stinks of hypocrisy. Apparently, some some human rights abuses are more palatable than others.
I will say though, that the way some of Congressfolk lionize Castro is quite sad. The guy doesn't really deserve to be treated like some kind of legend or hero. He's an asshole dictator who, like many dictators, has kept a hold power in his small country.

I recommend an invasion force, small in the beginning, to land at the Bay of Pigs. I've got some old maps around here somewhere that will surely be of use.

Joe Biden said that trade with Cuba will NOT be normalized. This is only a lifting of the travel restriction. No lifting of the embargo under the Obama administration is to take place. Period.
One of my favorite lines to use on communists/socialists/pro-castro types: There was an entry in Che's diary in which he describes what he does to a man in his camp. (The man might have been a spy, I don't remember.) "I solved the problem with a .38 to his head. Now his possessions are mine."
Murdering cockbite who wanted power, and he decided that Cuba/his other exploits were the best way to get it.
"Oh, but we don't have the right people in charge!"

Why not, Obama wants to be seen as Kennedyesque.
The Bay of Pigs was right near a favorite fishing hole of Fidel's. He knew the area quite well.
Also, the whole hospitals & schools thing is so stupid. Of course totalitarians want hospitals and schools. Sick slaves can't work, and illiterate slaves can't read propaganda.
ev:
I ended the problem giving him a shot with a .32 pistol in the right side of the brain, with exit orifice in the right temporal. He gasped for a little while and was dead. Upon proceeding to remove his belongings I couldn't get off the watch tied by a chain to his belt, and then he told me in a steady voice farther away than fear: Yank it off, boy, what does it matter. I did so and his possessions were now mine.
Well said Chicago Tom. I watched the video and thought WTF is Moynihan talking about. She answers with an unequivocal "no." I have little doubt that she's a moron and an intellectual lightweight, which makes it all the worse that Moynihan can't nail her.
Knee pads, flavored lube, and towels have been issued to Congress recently. The sheer quantity of cock slobbering across the entire world and inter party knob bobbing is going to create a serious increase OCSC (occupational cock suckers cramping). It's a good thing we have national health care on the horizon so they can get the proper care since their salaries are so minimal.
I'm glad they want to end the embargo and if it takes some knob bobbing dipshits. Oh fucking well.
"The list of abuses by Amnesty Int'l the anchor provides contained things that our government does in the name of national security (torture, imprisonment without charges, intimidation of dissidents)."
That hardly means we shouldn't loudly condemn those things when either our government or Cuba's does. And Cuba's government is much higher on the repression scale than our government, by a lot. They're an evil regime. Liberals that provide cover for them (and I say this as a liberal) should be ashamed of themselves.
If it takes apologists to open relations between the countries, then so be it. The anti Castro nutcases on the opposite side of the spectrum sure as fuck haven't helped things much over the decades. Is it really imperative that Castro take a public hand slap by the US in order for policy to be changed?
"Only mirror-universe, CCCP candidate Nixon-with-a-beard could have gone to China!"

Clearly my references to Playa Larga and Playa Giron were far too subtle. I guess I shouldn't make jokes that count on people referring to Wikipedia.
Don't forget to pick up the United Fruit Company boys from the senior's home Paul.
See, I think the Democrats are still pissed off cause they know that Castro was the one who was REALLY behind JFK's assassination.
They just didn't want to start a nuclear war back in '63.
In this context, hepatitis is an excess of hep to the point of inflammation, and these creatures are too late for a vaccine.
I remember back in 2001 when these loathsome pieces of shit made spectacles of themselves in the House by claiming Bush stole the election. They got up to the lectern with their faux outrage and went on and on about how black people had been disenfranchised. Then within a matter of months some of these same fucking hypocrites flew down to Cuba, and praised a man that had never held in election in almost fifty fucking years.
It is absolutely amazing. Whenever there is a jackboot smashing someone's face, there is always some well-heeled liberal commenting how that face gets good healthcare.
I don't really see what's so awful about what's said in the video.

raman, love your noodles!
your spectra are nice, too.
In my household I told Castro he is known as the ultimate survivor," Rush said.
I get the impression that if Cuba were as democratic as the TV Survivor, that son of a bitch would have been voted off the island a long time ago.
"They found a vaccine for hepatitis B."
Umm...when did they do that? We've had that vaccine for 25 years or so. Good job cubanos!
"Clearly my references to Playa Larga and Playa Giron were far too subtle. I guess I shouldn't make jokes that count on people referring to Wikipedia."
I might have been the only one Marc, but I got it.
Sheila Jackson Lee missed this junket?
"The list of abuses by Amnesty Int'l the anchor provides contained things that our government does in the name of national security (torture, imprisonment without charges, intimidation of dissidents)."
Tom you are an ignorant cunt. First, there is a point where difference in quanity becomes a difference in quality. Just because we didn't give KSM an lawyer and beat the fuck out of him doesn't put us on the level of Castro where people are routine sent to prison and tortured purely for political views. If you think that this country is as bad as Cuba, I invite you to defect and shoot your mouth off about Castro the way you do here. I wish you luck in the Cuban prison system.
Further, yes we do trade with China. Maybe we shouldn't. Yes we get rich off of it, but we also end up excusing their behavior because we want to trade with them. Beyond that, trading with China hasn't made China any less repressive. We trade with them by the billions and they still are a horrible regime. Given that, why is there any reason to think that trading with Cuba will make it any better? We trade with lots of horrible countries and our trade with them never seems to make them any better. It is like the Olympics. Remember how everyone said that giving the ChiComs the Olympics would make things freer and make them behave? How is that working out.
There may be good reasons to trade with Cuba and China and places like that. But the idea that trade will make their governments behave better, clearly isn't one of them.
The difference between China and Cuba is that Cuba would be overwhelmed by tourists and American dollars within a year after the embargo was lifted.
"Joe Biden said that trade with Cuba will NOT be normalized. This is only a lifting of the travel restriction. No lifting of the embargo under the Obama administration is to take place. Period."
And if you can't trust the word of the Obama administration, what CAN ya trust? :b
If Cuban medical care is so great, why did Fidel have to go to East Germany for major operations? And what does he do now that the German Democratic Republic no longer exists?
Idi Amin could be a pleasant fellow, too.
