I thought the age of irony was over. Is it back? Huzzah!

  2. JW   17 years ago

It's not necessarily funny because it's true. Actually that just makes it sadder.

  3. idiotface   17 years ago

JW, troof. I recently re-subscribed to reason. Drink?? I haven't seen a Peter Bagge toon in the past couple issues. More Bagge please.

  4. Episiarch   17 years ago

Hey, at least it's spot on. Definitely one of the better ones.

Some interesting visual touches in that last panel.

Making eyes look angry doesn't strike me as all that interesting.

  8. Lane Honda   17 years ago

Would be funnier if the elephant was wearing lipstick. But B+ regardless.

  9. libertarian democrat   17 years ago

I for one am shocked at the quality of cartoons reason allows for the friday funnies.

    I thought quality was a no-no.

  10. jtuf   17 years ago

Republicans lead the opposition to the bailout. Recall Pelowski's speech critizing them for not coming on board.

  11. libertarian democrat   17 years ago

    jtuf,

They did. Good for them. On the other hand, republicans also pushed for it from the executive branch (which is the role Obama is taking, btw).

Which ones? Bush, Cheney, McCain, M. Leader Boehner, M. Whip Blunt, CDMW Cantor....
Since when do Paul, Flake, etc LEAD the GOP? Maybe they SHOULD be put in charge.
Several 'fringe' Ds were also opposed.

It's really interesting, opposition to the bailout was strongest amongst those who opposed FISA, Patriot and Iraq.

  13. PicassoIII   17 years ago

Just so we are clear on how our congress critters voted.

  14. economist   17 years ago

Scott Stantis is pretty good, but Chip Bok is crap.

  15. Geotpf   17 years ago

I propose that Russ Feingold is more of a libertarian than most Republicans in Congress. He voted against the current finacial bailout, the renewal of the assault weapons ban, the Patriot Act, FISA, the Communication Decency Act, and earmarks such as the bridge to nowhere and the Woodstock museum. But, McCain-Feingold ooga booga!

  16. libertarian democrat   17 years ago

    Geotpf,

Russ Feingold is no libertarian. But it's not hard to beat most republicans in that area, so you may well be right.

  17. P Brooks   17 years ago

Republicans are red-tape-cutting free market ideologues. Aren't they?

  18. Shem   17 years ago

This one actually made me chuckle in an "is everyone taking crazy pills?" kind of way. Pretty good. More Stantis, no Bok, please.

  19. Geotpf   17 years ago

I keep bringing Feingold up, because he agres with libertarian thinking more than 99% of Republicans, yet because of one bill he wrote, libertarians consider him the devil.

I suspect a lot of people who claim to be "libertarians" are just "cutmytaxesians".

If the Senate contained 51 Feingolds, it would be a much better place.

  20. Episiarch   17 years ago

yet because of one bill he wrote, libertarians consider him the devil

That one bill took a colossal dump on the First Amendment. Fuck Feingold hard with a chainsaw.

  21. KenK   17 years ago

Maybe the reason the Republicans didn't win is that there weren't any running for office?

The real problem is that no matter who you vote for the Government still gets in.

  22. the innominate one   17 years ago

a solid cartoon by Stantis, stellar by comparison with Bok's typical work

this is funny. I promise not to post it again, but it got deleted last week during the "Friday Funnies" switchover.

  23. R C Dean   17 years ago

I recently re-subscribed to reason. Drink??

No, we drink when someone cancels their subscription. Subscribing calls for the "reverse drink."

  24. zoltan   17 years ago

But it's still drinking right? Right!??!?!

  25. the innominate one   17 years ago

I think "reverse drink" means we should vomit. or urinate. RC, please explain.

  26. Windtell   17 years ago

I vote that the reverse drink is to chug 500ml of Diet Coke.

  27. LarryA   17 years ago

I vote that the reverse drink is to chug 500ml of Diet Coke.

How about two handsfull of salted peanuts?

  28. LarryA   17 years ago

Republicans lead the opposition to the bailout.

The only reason representatives voted against Bailout 1.0 is because they hadn't had time to load the "must pass" package with earmarks. They "corrected" that problem in Bailout 1.1.

The elephant isn't fat enough. Jowls, man. Jowls.

  29. nj   17 years ago

Yeah, that one bill really does suck, but Feingold is pretty awesome. If we want to create a greater libertarian presence in the democratic party, we need a lot more Feingold's.

Gotta hand it to him; voted against Iraq, Patriot, FISA and Bailout.
From a 'What have you done for me lately' perspective, he's better than the Ds as a whole.
Definately NOT a drug warrior like Biden and even shows promise on gun rights.
"YES on prohibiting foreign & UN aid that restricts US gun ownership:"
Unfortunately the '1,3,4,5' liberty minded Ds like him and Kucinich aren't headed for the White House.

  31. T Maz   17 years ago

As I recall McCain-Feingold was signed by Bush the village idiot, and upheld by the incompetent SCOTUS.

Unfortunately this election and recent banking crisis have shown just how shallow the love and understanding of liberty are in this country.
