Election Day Freebie Watch: Part 3
The Krispy Kreme in D.C.'s Dupont Circle was hopping this afternoon, with a line of office workers basking in that "I Voted" glow and the warm, fuzzy feeling that comes with an impending free donut.
The two harried Latinas behind the counter looked like they were rethinking their decision to come to America.
Despite a last minute change of plans which required Starbucks, Krispy Kreme, and others to give free stuff to all comers, not just voters, the Dupont Kripsy was checking for stickers.
In an almost-too-good-to-be-true foreshadowing of the Obama presidency, the donutistas said that they were concerned about running out of the free election-themed donuts. Apparently, when you give something away for free, it's hard to know how much of it to make. They'd resorted to (semi-illegally) demanding to see "I Voted" stickers for the special donuts in order to stretch out the supply. They also said customers weren't as polite as usual. Go figure—when people feel entitled to something, they act as if they value it less. Who could have foreseen such a thing? Oh, wait.

Hayek as a closer? Nice.
Wait a minute ... Didn't Krispy Kreme have a long-standing tradition of giving away a free donut to all comers? I recall them doing that when I lived in NYC and when they opened up here in New Mexico (all gone now, though, dammit)
Those things that Krispy Kreme serves do have a superficial attraction, but they are decidedly not donuts.
Just saying.
There were free donuts at my polling place, but they were all plain. Why bother.
They give you a donut when you're on line waiting to buy donuts.
So the point of the story is that people who wait on a line for more than a few minutes to get a free 60 cent donut are assholes? Anyone could have told you that.
Were they the hottie big-brown-eyed-tiny-waist variety, or did they look like they eat where they work?
It's comforting to know that regardless of the outcome of this election, Guy Montag will still reliably be a douche. Whatta guy.
oh brother, KMW is just reinforcing the horrible stereotypes that people have of libertarians being brain dead automatons unable to reference anything but Ayn Rand and Hayek.
I am proud to say that I have never read any Ayn Rand, Hayek, Bastiat, Rothbard or Mises. I wish all of you juvenielle mouth breathers would get out of your mother's basements and go pick up a copy of something a little more mature.
Ah yes, the immature musings of Hayek and Bastiat.
Fucking amateurs.
Guy,
They were the hot ones, and word has it they can also weld competently.
They were the hot ones, and word has it they can also weld competently.
Then I know wwhere I am going as soon as I get off the plane at Reagan National in a couple of weeks!
I know you don't vote Kathy, but to most Reasonoid libertarians an Obama presidency will usher in a new paradise of peace, prosperity, tolerance, warm feelings, longer orgasms and shorter commutes. The economic insights of Hayek cannot hold a candle to the supreme wisdom of Barrack. If he decrees that there shall be no lines of snitty customers demanding their petty entitlements, then So Shall it Be!
They also said customers weren't as polite as usual. Go figure-when people feel entitled to something, they act as if they value it less. Who could have foreseen such a thing?
haha, glibertarians, time to move to Canada or Mexcio. People are going to follow Obama's lead and become much more impolite.
Actually the various private companies working in a free market system, i.e Starbucks, Krispy Kreme, etc., are fronts for evil ACORN, just trying to get people to vote. ACORN was also behind the Community Reinvestment Act, which recently caused the collapse of global capitalism.
Go figure-when people feel entitled to something, they act as if they value it less. Who could have foreseen such a thing?
Ah yes......what the next 4 years entail.
I think Grampa Simpson hit the nail on the head. Something about not earning it, but being pissed off if it doesn't show up.

BAHAHAHA! What is the matter sweetpea? Does the appreciation of pretty women put you off?
"Go figure-when people feel entitled to something, they act as if they value it less."
What a fucking stupid cliche...oops, I mean, fascinating libertarian insight. Do you feel entitled to respect, dear?
the appreciation of pretty women
BAHAHAHA! What is the matter sweetpea? Does the appreciation of pretty women put you off?
No, it's your particular brand of passive-aggressive, jerky comments about women's appearances that puts me off. If you want to linger on the topic of hot women why don't you go over to Askmen.com or some other equally vapid website. It just gets old, and moreover I don't think women who are working for minimum wage selling greasy bread really need to be critiqued about their appearance on top of their already thankless job.
smacky,
Testy little sensitive gal aren't you? How about you hit the gym so maybe you won't have to envy others so much. But probably not.
Come back after your little cry.
Guy,
I'd bet dollars to donuts that you're a rather unattractive guy, too.
It's not like they're going to come here and read that, smacky.
sage,
That doesn't make Guy Montag's personality any less grating, unfortunately.
I'd bet dollars to donuts that you're a rather unattractive guy, too.
Thank goodness I don't have to 'worry' about you stalking me offline then.
Just wait until the government gives away health care "for free"!
Not that she needs or wants my defense, but as I recall from photos posted some years ago from some reason function or another, smacky isn't exactly in need of hitting the gym or envying others as she was quite attractive. So, contrary to Guy's implication attempting to discredit her argument, I don't think smacky's dislike of, well exactly what I'm doing (commenting on someone's looks), is motivated by personal concerns.
anonymous,
See, you will now get a compliment from her for that, since you commented on her looks in a positive manner, rather than asking if some other chick is attractive.
Lefiti asked:
"Go figure-when people feel entitled to something, they act as if they value it less."
What a fucking stupid cliche...oops, I mean, fascinating libertarian insight. Do you feel entitled to respect, dear?
Isn't respect something to be earned?
Or is it now, like so much else in fairytale land, just another entitlement to be given to everyone?
oh goody, we've gone down the "let's all talk about H+R women and they're hotness" abyss.
time to bail.
smacky worry not: guy is a susan sarandon alt account and is merely researching her next role. hence all the "i'm moving to southeast asia when barry hussein wins" stuff.
not that sarandon went anywhere either, but i guess some rhetorical habits are hard to break.
Lefiti,
Wipe the sugar glaze off your chin and just press on.
See, you will now get a compliment from her for that, since you commented on her looks in a positive manner, rather than asking if some other chick is attractive.
Right, Guy, because your assumption that women are all catty, insecure, and vain is entirely spot on, and not because it's rude and chauvinistic to bring attractiveness into a conversation about anonymous service workers.
Wipe the sugar glaze off your chin and just press on.
Are you sure that's sugar glaze, WLC?
Right, Guy, because your assumption that women are all catty, insecure, and vain is entirely spot on, and not because it's rude and chauvinistic to bring attractiveness into a conversation about anonymous service workers.
Not an assumption about women in general, babydoll. You are the one having a fit about the hottie Hispanic chicks at KK.
