What Would Ike Do?
Unless he slips up later, Obama is doing what he needs to do to control his uhhs. Hopefully that'll be the last of my style commentary.
Obama names the root of the crisis: "A verdict on eight years of economic policy." He's hitting a safe partisan note, counting on everyone to trust the guy with the (D) after his name to right the ship.
McCain, because he's got the (R) after his name, praises the drama of both parties "coming together." "And yes, I went to Washington." But he's miffed that the House Republicans weren't being heard.
OK, more style commentary: McCain looks and sounds 10 million years old. He's trying the Reagan trick of telling stories about great men (whom you can read about in his books!) to make his point.
McCain is conceding a lot of turf here: Hey, he wants to regulate, too! And he retreats more quickly than I thought he would on the "fundamentals" comment, saying, like he does in his ads, that he was talking about "you, the American worker."
Mentioning Tom Coburn sets Obama up to say how friendly he is with Coburn. But Obama pivots the question and talks about "main street" again. I'm stunned that McCain isn't attacking on taxes.
Ah, now we're in the tax policy thicket. Obama sounds a bit like Al Gore in 2000. And it was a mistake for him not to get out of the earmark debate by talking Coburn.
McCain's controlling his irritation at Obama pretty damn well, sticking to Obama votes that he's been attacking on the trail.

McCain has got off to a slow start, (and the Ike story is nice, but misguided. Note that that story only came out years later - you don't anticipate failure publically).
but the "is he afraid I'm couldn't hear him" came off quite well
but the "is he afraid I'm couldn't hear him" came off quite well
Yeah, it was cute, but beating on the moderator is never the best plan unless he's *directly* being an asshole. Lehrer was just doing his job to get it spiced up a little (I think he tried a little too early, but whatever).
Personally I liked his quip about "and I've been around for a little while..."
I have no problem doing style commentary.
That split screen does McCain no good. The fidgeting is one thing, but what's that weird grimmace when he's writing?
LMNOP-
The comment wasn't at the moderator; 'he' was obama
And if he keeps saying "my friends" I'm going to be drunk before 9:30.
The comment wasn't at the moderator; 'he' was obama
"he" was Obama, but that's not who he was taking a shot at. He was (?making fun?) of Lehrer's attempt to get the candidates to talk to one another.
McCain is starting to find his footing
L-
ok I saw it differently
Well, it started slow, but it's heating up. People say McCain can't afford to look angry. I beg to differ. Obama getting unnerved will come as as "uppity negro" to many. If McCain's so-called "anger" comes off as "passion," all the "McNasty" talk will fall to the wayside.
Forget "looking presidential" ... I want a slugfest. The American people deserve some blood and guts, not "bipartisan niceties" in this so-called "debate."
and then he got slapped around on the tax thing
Where the hell is the foreign policy debate we were told we were going to get?
Also, don't think it was a great idea to commit to voting for the bailout package before he read it. Obama got out of that. McCain stumbled.
Obama's doing a decent job of seeming his answering the question, even if energy independence is a chimera
Where the hell is the foreign policy debate we were told we were going to get?
Fucking A that would be way more entertaining.
OK, this is bit of a laundry list for someone who's trying to prioritize.
And it's pretty gedunk to end with 'let's canx stuff that doesn't work and continue with stuff that does.'
McCain has flipped a lot on procurement programs.
And if his talking about the Tanker program
"I'm not dead yet. Really, I'm feeling better."
The tanker will be rebid next spring.
The hatchet/scalpel line was decent, made better by having some examples ready.
And did McCain just kick Obama in the balls with Clinton on nuclear power?
I think both of them are just not very impressive debaters. A good debater takes what the opponent just said and turns it around on them.
"Yes John there should be accountability, and along those lines we should hold your party responsible for their eight years of mismanagement of the country."
Like that.
"Freeze everything except defense and entitlements" - McCain
The two most out-of-control areas of govt.
The ethanol line probably meant Iowa will go Dem for the first time in a while, right?
It's fucking hilarious to hear a presidential candidate say "orgy". Context doesn't fucking matter.
McCain's earmarks comments were bizarre as an answer to the financial mess. Earmarks are bad but surely not the cause of this mess.
Does Welch have to finish his drink?
It was also possibly a bad idea to pimp out Palin right now.
McCain seems more comfortable already with the switch to Iraq.
McCain seems more comfortable already with the switch to Iraq.
True, but this "withdraw with honor victory" crap that he's peddling is a hard sell.
Obama should have just go ahead an cribbed Ron Paul's best line during the Rep primary dates, something like 'we're borrowing money from China to spend in Iraq to get Americans killed'
"The next President of the United States...."
The next President of the United States, if he is unfortunate enough to win, will meet with the joint chiefs, after which he will find a quiet corner and drink himself to death.
Obama gave a good answer on Iraq. I think he should talk about the cost of the war over and over.
dates = debates
McCain has two issues - the surge and earmark reform.
Both pretty insignificant considering everything else.
"'we're borrowing money from China to spend in Iraq to get Americans killed'"
That was a great line
Obama should have just go ahead an cribbed Ron Paul's best line during the Rep primary dates, something like 'we're borrowing money from China to spend in Iraq to get Americans killed'
Would have been smart. Would have been even smarter to pimp him out by giving him credit for the quote and say "heck, because of Ron Paul we know that many good conservatives agree with me on the war, too..."
Obama's on firmer groung with the 'never should have been fought' than the 'missmanaged' train of reasoning. First, it cedes the point of whether it was a good idea. Second, McCain does honestly have a record of saying that the Admin is mucking things up.
McCain loves him some military...I wonder if one of our resident right leaning libertarians would explain how such military worship is libertarian...
McCain is resting a helluva lot on Iraq having "pulled itself together with peace and prosperity blah blah blah". If shit happens in the Green Zone, that's game over man.
Kolohe
Agreed, but I think he gave his most aggressive answer in his litany of "you were wrong about being greeted as liberators, wrong on no history of violence between Sunni and Shiite..."
Barry looks like he is about to cry.
Mullen and Paetreus are not on the same page in many areas; the disagreements are of course muted.
Why don't Democrats ever say something like "the Republicans have had eight years to bring Osama Bin Laden to justice and have failed, we need new leadership to bring him to justice."
MNG-
true, he had a good cadence with that one, and it resonated.
"Barry looks like he is about to cry."
Wow, you can see some interesting things through GOP colored glasses 🙂
Barry looks like he is about to cry.
Methinks you need some work on interpreting them there visual cues, son.
"Barry looks like he is about to cry."
An expert opinion no doubt.
Upon reflection, the tactical reason why Obama can't pimp Ron Paul or his lines is because he is committed to expanding the war in Afghanistan/Pakistan. That doesn't play with Paul's playbook.
Hey Kolohe, I need to give you some props for taking the time to look up all the governor's of the US education. I thought Palin's made her a low scorer on that, but I was too lazy to look up them all, and thank god for industrious folks like yourself! I thought it was fascinating that so many had less than a grad degree (16 I think you noted).
McCain needs to get that blinking shit under control.
LMNOP
Agreed on Paul, but knowing that Paul's supporters were very enthusiastic for him and are very internet savy and well represented there, it would have been smart for Obama to throw a quick props out to RP...
whoa, that 'we should have stayed and finished in afghanistan' cuts out a heck of lot a history.
After the russians left, the Marxist govt in kabul stayed in place for years, much to the surprise of many people. (it took far longer than eastern europe IIRC; it may have even been after Russia itself converted, but that doesn't seem right to me)
McCain's make-up is excellent - although it is so good it is kind of funeral home-ish.
You don't say out loud you will attack Pakistan.
You sing "Bomb Iran" at rallies.
MNG --
I agree, but he'd have to do it more generally. As good as the line was, he can't use it. What he could do is say, simply, that the existence of and success of Ron Paul is a sign that left and right can come together on war issues.
So...where are the Cylon centurions come to waste the crowd, already?
I'm right
Russians left in 1989, gave up all support in '92, but Kabul didn't fall until '96.
So we had Marxists vs the Taliban, which would have given us about the same choices as the Spanish Civil War.
So we had Marxists vs the Taliban, which would have given us about the same choices as the Spanish Civil War.
Well, it's a little different, since in Afghanistan only one of them was a ginormous empire. If it were *simply* a choice between Marxism and Religious Totalitarianism, I'd take Marxism in a heartbeat. However, if one is represented by a nuclear armed empire and the other does not, you either stay the hell out or root for the underdog.
If Obama was good, he could try to make the point that leaving Vietnam could have been the best thing that happened to both us and them, (we could focus on the Soviets, and they could find their own destiny) but it's hard to pull off because of the conventional wisdom on the matter.
Well, it's a little different, since in Afghanistan only one of them was a ginormous empire
I'm talking post '92, when McCain wanted us to 'help' to avert the Taliban takeover.
O for the love of...
If Israel perceived an *existential* threat they would wipe Iran from the pages of history. They would not ask permission or help beforehand.
McCain needs to fucking stop pimping Israel as the excuse du jour for war with Iran.
Iran poses an "existiental threat."
Who knew they were going to drop over Israel volumes of Sartre and Camus!
League of Democracies-
Already exists.
NATO
Our Asian-Pacific partnerships with ROK, Japan, and Aus.
And we need Russia and China on board, that's just how the world works.
(Like Pappy Bush was able to do with GW 1, if he didn't things would have proceeded differently)
Obama did well by pointing out that the Iraq War has strengthened Iran. But he is dithering....
Wow, Obama get out of my head.
McCain is channeling Hagee on Zion, er, Israel.
It's a fundie dog-whistle call.
LMNOP
McCain has to say that kind of thing, not so much for Jewish voters, but Christian Zionists.
Ahme ... Ahmedina ... Ahma ... Fuck it, that guy in Iran!!
(Like Pappy Bush was able to do with GW 1, if he didn't things would have proceeded differently)
Russia's abstention in the security council was crucial (we were worrying about them voting "no"). I remember it being a big enough deal that we were talking about it in 6th grade history/civics class.
The other x-factor was Iran which promised to remain neutral (the smartest move the ever made).
EEK! Fucking learn the name. ACK-me-din-eh-JAHD.
Oh snap, finally Obama said aloud that Ahmadinejad doesn't fucking matter. The ayatollahs matter so much more.
This preconditions stuff is probably lost on most viewers, it seems like a lot of debate over some "inside baseball" stuff
If Ahm, Ameh, Ameh-not-gonna-work-here-anymore ran afould of the clerics he would not be in power.
That seal thing was a dumb line, only geeks who read blogs would even get the joke.
I dunno, MNG. Obama did well with the "we're not inviting them over for tea" line. And he did outline the consequences of not engaging with NK *very well*.
Jesus enough on the sit down with other leaders stuff! I said preconditions, no you said secretary level talks, no I said...Jesus.
I don't honestly know how this Obama-wrapping-himself-in-Bush's-flip-flop thing is going to play.
Good fireworks. If McCain would have just shut up as soon as Leher started talking he would have won that point.
"Your party has had eight years to deal with the grave threats that NK presents to us and our allies and they have failed. It is time for accountability and new leadership to deal with NK."
That's free Obama, go ahead and use it.
In fact, in response to any question I would just reply with "Your party has had eight years to deal with x, and has failed. It is time for accountability for the GOP for that failure and new leadership to deal with X."
Holy flying fucking shit, did he just call Russia a KGB-controlled empire?
MNG,
you are doing better than Barry!
You know, back in the day, the British Empire jsut anglicized every name they came across and didn't try to mangle it by pronouncing it in the native tongue.
And they kicked ass for almost half a millienium.
El,
I think that is "straight talk".
I find it hard to believe that Obama was recommending to the Admin a change in Caucusus policy.
I think the real question about Russia and Georgia is, are you for pushing NATO membership in ways that will make us have troubles with Russia? Because fuck all that tough talk from either of them, I'm glad to not live during a Cold War anymore.
Lieberman!
And they kicked ass for almost half a millienium.
Well, making English the official language of India hasn't hurt their economic development.
Obama has a habit of constantly trying to interrupt McCain when he's talking.
That is very irritating. When it's Obamas turn to talk McCain doesn't interrupt him.
HUMINT is the absolutly hardest thing to do, and it's darn difficult to improve it on a structural basis (which is really the only method available to a president)
I think that is "straight talk".
I'd almost buy that if McCain hadn't ten minutes before quoted Secretary Baker approvingly that you should never FOR FUCK'S SAKE talk straight in foreign policy!
Cause what I want from a president is *not* a guy who has insulted the leader of our primary strategic adversary *before he ever even took fucking office*. That strikes me as antagonistic and stupid.
I will make a bold prediction: partisans from both sides will amazingly declare their candidate fared better than the other guy for the next few days...
I think both guys did average.
"Obama has a habit of constantly trying to interrupt McCain when he's talking."
They've both done it some. I'm amazed that neither has done it more.
Obama did a pretty good job of hitting overarching themes in his terror answer.
SDI != missle defense
And was a factor, but a secondary one with the end of the cold war
I think both guys did average.
I agree. (I think that McCain did more poorly *factually*, with the fibbing and all, but since when has that fucking mattered?)
As far as debates go, this was pretty sedate, and neither candidate either showed skin or gave meat.
After the stronger start, Obama sounds like he's now in retreat. McCain is showing a comprehensive understanding of foreign relations. Whether you like his approach or not is another story. Obama is stuck in react mode to McCain's statements.
Obama retreats to inspirational statements, but is a little light on specifics.
Al Gore needs to council his Padawan not to sigh when exasperated at his opponent's statement.
I agree that they're working for a draw.
Which is an advantage to Obama at this juncture.
Obama is stuck in react mode to McCain's statements.
For the most part I agree, though he did slap McCain around something fierce on "meeting with Iran".
However, with the closing statements, Obama was much stronger (my name comes from someone who thought America was the shit!), with McCain childishly wrapping himself in (veterans/troops/I was a POW!!!)
Fred Barnes just said "I can't think of a soundbite" I got to agree.
Draw.
I give Obama an edge, especially since foreign policy is supposed to be McCain's strong suit. Obama makes a good case on us moving our focus back to Afghanistan and Pakistan where it should have stayed all along.
One nice thought about physics:
If the "infinite number of alternate universes" theory is true, there are universes where, when McCain lied about opposing Bush on torture, alternate versions of me ran out of the audience and hit him in the face with the claw end of a claw hammer.
What truly happy men those alternate versions of me must be tonight.
I think both candidates exceeded expectations.
Not bad.
I think both candidates exceeded expectations.
Hmm. It is a rare occasion when I agree with SIV, but I think there are metrics on which both men did better than usual. No senior moments for McCain, no snoozefest academic answers for Obama.
But I think "exceeds expectations" only applies in the sense that they both assiduously avoided their expected negatives. On the positive side, both candidates were fucking boring.
"OK, more style commentary: McCain looks and sounds 10 million years old"
Your attempts to frame this as Nixon/Kennedy in 1960 are pathetic, Davie.
"OK, more style commentary: McCain looks and sounds 10 million years old"
I just heard Mark Shields say this is the best he has seem McCain in any of the debates. At least he can be honest and objective about his opponent.
But that's why he has a real job, Davie.
I thought McCain performed very badly- maybe this has been mentioned in this thread already, but if not, count McCain's blinks per second. The executive office is won and lost on stuff such as that. He should have watched Reagan's debates a bit more. Reagan really knew how to get away with being older than Christ, and McCain doesn't. Obama was overly condescending, but it pales (no offense intended to Albinos) in comparison to McCain's blinking habit.
On the plus side, this was a historic debate. For the first time in US history an Albino has debated a Negro for the US presidency. It doesn't get much more black and white than that, folks.
That was a bad debate. It got a little better towards the end, but neither of those two did themselves any favors.
Maybe I'm spoiled with John Kerry and Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, but those two are just not good debaters.
No clear victory. Maybe McCain on points?
My old eyes saw it thusly. McCain seemed to answer in more political candidate terms while Obama seemed more thoughtful and honest.
McCain-vague and condescending
Obama-credible with good particulars.
Oh, I thought Lehrer was a pain in the ass.
Lehrer: "Go ahead senator, call him a pussy. I double dog dare ya.
I went back and read this whole thread, and this was the winner:

Actually, Shields has loved him some John McCain for over a decade now. He is a man with a torn soul between an attractive liberal Democratic candidate and his first and only flirtation with the Republican party.

When I got home a while ago I found this thread and read through most of it. I have to say Elemenope was on fire tonight.
As SIV wrote, Mister Nice Guy did better than Barry tonight.
fucking annoying add
Either candidate could have easily won the debate by grimacing less. It's amazing to me that campaigns do such a bad job of prepping their candidates.
If I were prepping McCain I would have said: It's one thing to have had a blinking habit as a youth, but you can't show up at the debate blunk. And blinking _at the podium_ is right out. Yes, Obama has been known to blink, but he blinks socially- you don't, and everyone knows it. Also, be younger and less crotchety. And a bit darker in complexion and hair color, cause you're freaking people out. I wouldn't have believed that being white could be a disadvantage in a Presidential election, particularly against a black man, had I not met you. But you, Sir, are too white.
If I were prepping Obama I would have said: yes, yes, we all know you're a bright young man. That played well when you were at Harvard. It has tended to play less well in presidential debates, historically. Because people hate bright young guys, for the most part, and being black is not necessarily a plus in this regard (jury out on this one, for Obama). But mainly, let McCain talk. Don't make faces.
And we mean the no faces bit- as much as you want to, don't make faces. Why can we never get this through the heads of candidates. It's simple really... Don't. Make. Faces. You're not going to break new ground here and be the first presidential candidate to make faces in a debate who gets loved for it.
How fucking hard is that you moron? Did you entirely miss the 2000 election debates? Oh yeah, you were still in diapers... well, let me tell you a little story about a man named Al and a man named George. Al made faces.. capisce?
The thing is, since presidential debates are about 85% body language, it's really weird to see both candidates fuck the body language up this badly. It's like they keep thinking that their talking points matter. Having claimed that politicians are too focussed on the issues, I must go shower. Repeatedly.
I wouldn't have believed that being white could be a disadvantage in a Presidential election, particularly against a black man, had I not met you. But you, Sir, are too white.
Reminds me of the SNL fake campaign commercial in '88. 'Dukakis' family comes from this Southern European nation (showing Greece on the map), George Bush's family comes from Britain (emphasizing Britain is far to the North of Greece). Dukakis, not as white as George Bush.'
Did I hear the debate correctly? We need the bail-out to protect the Chinese investment?
That's so fucked up.
The thing is, since presidential debates are about 85% body language, it's really weird to see both candidates fuck the body language up this badly.
Like when Palin crushes her left hand fingers with her right hand. I want to tell her, 'stop that! Couric is trained to smell fear in politicians. Oh shit, she is on you like, well, a dog on a kid with a pocket full of lamb chops; whose the pit bull now, Palin? It ain't you!'
"You sing "Bomb Iran" at rallies."
Iran isn't a putative ally .
Did I hear the debate correctly? We need the bail-out to protect the Chinese investment?
That's so fucked up.
Fortunately, I missed the economic portion and caught a big chunk of the foreign policy which was a fairly decent discussion. If I had seen the economic portion, I bet I would be angry as hell right now. Did Obama talk about a fictitious reign of deregulation over the last eight years, and McCain join the celestial chorus chiming in?
"Actually, Shields has loved him some John McCain for over a decade now. He is a man with a torn soul between an attractive liberal Democratic candidate and his first and only flirtation with the Republican party."
Please edit.
Obama needed to cut down the hand raising thing when he wanted to say something. Probably reminded people of the annoying guy in class.
I agree both candidates were meh. I would probably give it to McCain in OT. However, in the grand scheme of things, this means Obama wins. This was McCain's strong suit and McCain was trailing. This is barely going to move the needle.
Perhaps, but I'm pretty sure I heard Obama say we needed to "rebuild the Georgian economy", and considering how badly our economy is going I can't decide if that's funny or just sad.
Please edit.
My copy editor here at Harlequin Romance says that it is fine and it is going on the back jacket.
By the way, I think Obama won the body language war. They had major fuck ups, but McCain looked like he was insulted to share the stage with Obama. Plus, Obama was the one gracious enough to walk over to shake John and Cindy's hand.
Rallies, not Allies, you twit.
Or was that a joke?
Well, that's something completely different.
Nevermind.
Well, humor has advanced in leaps and bounds since then. I have a few basic rules: Funny and offensive is best. If you can't be funny, at least offend. If you can't offend you can resort to pure humor.
But I wonder about Emily.. is it possible that she has invented a new style of humor that is divorced from all previous styles? For instance, if my shoelaces were untied, and I tied them.. might she say.. "oh good, you tied your laces?" Is this the future of comedy? It might be.
I love reading intelligent analysis from a guy who calls himself "ass to mouth".

Fuck Iran. Albert Camus is the *ultimate* existential threat, bitches!
Absent Sisyphus rolling into town on a big fucking enchanted boulder, perhaps the best humor is that which is unintentionally produced by those with the very slightest possession of the quality.
What the fuck would I know, I've been drinking to erase the memory of that debate. Next debate I'm getting high, just to compare the experiences. If I were serious I'd have to do the third debate sober, for a baseline.
Fuck that scientific method shit. You can't be in your right mind and listen to this stuff.
Elemenope:
Bisyphus, not Sysiphus.
Get with the fucking program.
You twit.
Nigger.
That split screen does McCain no good. The fidgeting is one thing, but what's that weird grimmace when he's writing?
That look is usually a sign that one is thinking of drowning puppies, but I really want to be fair to McCain and not extrapolate.
I think both of them are just not very impressive debaters. A good debater takes what the opponent just said and turns it around on them.
"Yes John there should be accountability, and along those lines we should hold your party responsible for their eight years of mismanagement of the country."
MNG -- snappy comeback, but the last two years of extreme fuckupedness may have had something to do with the Democrats controlling Congress.
Bush and the rest of the socialist wing of the Republican party need some help from the socialist wing of the Democratic party to really botch things up royally during times of divided government.
What the fuck would I know, I've been drinking to erase the memory of that debate. Next debate I'm getting high, just to compare the experiences. If I were serious I'd have to do the third debate sober, for a baseline.
LMNOP -- but, given your personality, I'm guessing the third debate will have to be done both drunk and high.
Or you could do what I did, watch about 3 minutes of it, say "Fuck this shit", and go do something -- anything -- else.
prole: actually i would like to see the presidential debates conducted in that fashion. They would first be forced to drink a great deal, and then be administered a large but measured dose of LSD. Then (about 2 hours later) they would be asked to solve a simple puzzle, with the understanding that if they failed their children would be killed.
I just want to be sure that the President is able to deal with a crisis... I figure that after your children have been suspended over a vat of acid while you are tripping on good acid... if you dealt with that, you can probably handle Pakistan having nukes.
I should add that I never trust anyone who hasn't taken massive amounts of LSD. If I wouldn't hire you because you haven't tripped enough, why would I want you to be the President?
