I hated the first part about her family. But I can't stand any of that kind of stuff. She hit her stride and had some good lines. I guess I just don't like political speeches that much. I thought Rudy was great though.

  2. John   17 years ago

She was better Biden though. She is going to kill him in the debates.

  3. G4m3Th30ry   17 years ago

I still wonder how risky the move is?

I mean, if McCain wins, history will say good choice. If he loses, bad choice.

The question should be out of the 10-15 paths he could've taken, he took an unknown. Maybe this is due to McCain's beliefs, maybe as others have speculated disaffected Hilary voters...

All I know, is history will be written as the decision, one way or the other was a determining factor, because we will never contemplate probalistic thinking.

  4. henry   17 years ago

John, you are actually going to watch a Biden-Palen debate?

    Some interesting life you lead....

  5. G4m3Th30ry   17 years ago

    Excuse me - probabilistic thinking

  6. Mike E.   17 years ago

I found her hokey and snotty. More importantly, she did NOT look or sound presidential.

  7. John   17 years ago

    Henry,

Where did I say I was going to watch it? I just said she is going to kill him.

  8. Bill\'s Dog   17 years ago

    "Poised and Confident=Clean and Articulate?"

My, how shallow of you, Miss Katie.

    woof

  9. Seward   17 years ago

    John,

Yeah, and the Patriots were going to kill the Giants. Past performance may not reflect future performance. Etc.

  10. John   17 years ago

The people on MSNBC look visably depressed. I will take that to mean they think it was a good speech. They probably know better than I do.

Isn't it a bit pathetic for the media to whine that she didn't write the speech when like half of the blowhards on TV are former speech writers? Has any politician since Lincoln ever wrote their own speech?

  11. John   17 years ago

    Seward,

Have you ever watched Biden? He is not the Giants or the Patriots, he is the Dolphins. The guy is terrible.

  12. Gilbert Martin   17 years ago

"More importantly, she did NOT look or sound presidential."

    She isn't running for president.

    That slot is already taken.

  13. Gilbert Martin   17 years ago

"Isn't it a bit pathetic for the media to whine that she didn't write the speech when like half of the blowhards on TV are former speech writers? Has any politician since Lincoln ever wrote their own speech?"

You can bet that Obama never wrote any of his own speeches. In fact reading speeches off of a teleprompter is about the only talent he has. When he has to talk and think on his feet, he stumbles all over himself.

  14. Seward   17 years ago

    John,

No, I have not watched Biden. I didn't watch Palin either. I tend to read political speeches (if I look at them at all).

I cannot tell which is worse: Obamamania or Palinmania.

  15. Mike E.   17 years ago

    She isn't running for president.

    That slot is already taken.

But she needs to be able to take the reigns at any time and with McCain's age and health, this becomes more likely.

  16. Hugh Akston   17 years ago

Dismiss it all you like, Bill's Dog. But it was a good point that bears repeating that no one fretted over how Obama's campaigning would affect his adolescent children.

  17. John   17 years ago

    Seward,

I didn't think it was that great of a speech. It had some good lines but I didn't like it. But, I don't like political speeches and would last like 10 seconds as a politician.

I have been watching Biden for a long time on the Sunday Talk Shows. He is a blowhard. He comes accross as arrogant. I can forgive that, but then when you listen to him, he isn't really that smart or have any reason to be arrogant.

  18. The Angry Optimist   17 years ago

It was a great speech, if it had been on paper. To me, Palin seemed like she didn't know what her "hit lines" (that is, the ones that induce applause) and her "filler lines" were. She didn't place the emphasis on the correct places.

  19. Seward   17 years ago

    John,

I think libertarians need to keep in mind that neither major party is likely that interested in the overall philosophy, POV, etc. of libertarians.

  20. Hugh Akston   17 years ago

Let me rephrase before I get misinterpreted. No one rose concerns about Obama's campaign affecting his ability to raise his adolescent kids.

  21. John   17 years ago

"It was a great speech, if it had been on paper. To me, Palin seemed like she didn't know what her "hit lines" (that is, the ones that induce applause) and her "filler lines" were. She didn't place the emphasis on the correct places."

Part of it was that the crowd kept cheering and stepping on her lines. Early in the speech it knocked her off a bit I think. After they finally shut up and she got going I thought her deliver was really good. If she had a deeper, more commanding voice, she would be devistating. Some of the lines were right out of Reagan speechs. But Reagan had that great voice and could just devistate people with it. she doesnt' have that.

  22. John   17 years ago

    Seward.

Most libertarians are nerds like me and want to hear all of the policy stuff and are driven off by the family stuff. Most people in the country want to hear the family stuff.

  23. G4m3Th30ry   17 years ago

    John -

I'm not so sure. I agree with you that I like specifics, but let's understand that even in the short course of time that is four years, facts will change.

Not that they "change" but that overtime the facts either become more clear or more diluted.

Either way, I think you elect the person that views these changes as you might, or as closely as you might.

  24. The Angry Optimist   17 years ago

John - I do agree. There was almost too much applause. The crowd wanted to give the impression that she was doing well regardless if she actually was because they were probably not expecting as much as they got.

The question is: is the speech great, or is it great in the context of the lowered expectations we all had?

  25. Bill\'s Dog   17 years ago

"Dismiss it all you like, Bill's Dog. But it was a good point that bears repeating that no one fretted over how Obama's campaigning would affect his adolescent children."

Nor did I. I think you confuse me with some other dog.

    Double woof.

  26. Snaporaz   17 years ago

Yeah, she certainly doesn't have the polish of the other three, but that didn't stop the current president.

  27. Seitz   17 years ago

You can bet that Obama never wrote any of his own speeches.

Umm, he pretty much writes all of them. Sheesh, have you been living under a goddamn rock?

  28. Buster   17 years ago

"Umm, he pretty much writes all of them. Sheesh, have you been living under a goddamn rock?"

    Time?

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha...oh damn, I just shit myself.

  29. SIV   17 years ago

She knew exactly what she was doing. Brilliant delivery. I am in awe of the sheer raw political talent.Coupled with the character and biography Sarah Palin is now an unstoppable force in American politics.

I only hope she uses her super powers for good.

  30. Dwayne Mayor   17 years ago

Seitz beat me to it. Gilbert is an idiot. It's a well known fact that Obama writes most of his speeches, certainly his best ones. And damn, he can deliver them too. Palin is incapable of doing either.

  31. Dwayne Mayor   17 years ago

SIV, LOL! Great comedy man! Keep up the routine.

Hugh, are you going to pretend that the roles of mother and father are interchangeable? Particularly in the context of our evolutionary and cultural history? Do you think it is sexist for judges to almost invariably reward the mom with the children as a divorce settlement?

  32. G4m3Th30ry   17 years ago

    Dwayne -

Your proof of either... IE - prove to me Obama writes his own and Palin doesn't.

It appears you're projecting you're already understood beliefs, because I seriously doubt your peronal knowledge about either.

FWIW - I'm a decent public speaker, but I would have no problems with someone with better literaly skills helping me.

  33. Other Matt   17 years ago

I cannot tell which is worse: Obamamania or Palinmania.

Obmamamamamamamania, only because he's looking for the driver seat and Palin is an adjunct who has only slightly more validity as a VP due to McCain's age. As I've said, if you really want the lesser evil, McCain is going to be able to accomplish almost nothing due to the Dems whining in the corner. With a mandate for undefined "Change", Obama will be capable of much more evil, and given his extreme efforts to hide the details of his agenda there's probably something to be concerned about there. Barr is probably the candidate of conscience for most, but a lot of people get convinced it's only supposed to be two parties as their attention span is limited.

  34. The Angry Optimist   17 years ago

Do you think it is sexist for judges to almost invariably reward the mom with the children as a divorce settlement?

It's deeper than sexist. It's fucking abhorrent and categorically unfair and discriminatory.

  35. DADIODADDY   17 years ago

sweet smelling as well? I wonder is Obama felling fresh right now?

  36. joe   17 years ago

She showed some talent for speechifying, but she's still very raw. She SOUNDED like someone who SHOUTS INTO THE TELEPHONE. It shows that she's not used to addressing a crowd that size.

Harsh, partisan attack dog is a fine role for a running mate, but because McCain is so awful and she's so cute, she's being squeezed into the role of beloved Dear Leader as well. I'm not sure the same person can play both roles.

  37. Pro Libertate   17 years ago

All we should really be talking about is her ability to act as President of the Senate, the only real job of the VP ?

  38. R C Dean   17 years ago

When he has to talk and think on his feet, he stumbles all over himself.

Obama ad libs like an academic - he's visibly considering all the different ways he could say something, all the possible qualifications, extensions, and tangents of whatever he's about to say. There's no question he's a smart guy, but he's not really an eloquent guy on his feet. Like most academics.

  39. joe   17 years ago

I'm pretty sure that you don't spent a few years as a community organizer, the become a favorite law professor, and a few more years getting elected and re-elected from an urban district in Chicago, without being to speak well extemporaneously.

  40. R C Dean   17 years ago

She SOUNDED like someone who SHOUTS INTO THE TELEPHONE.

All women have a problem talking over crowd noise, as far as I can tell - it sounds screechy. She did better in this speech than she did in her first one - she was screechier over the crowd in the first one.

  41. joe   17 years ago

I thought she was better in the first one.

Maybe it was the better sound system in the hall.

  42. lenore   17 years ago

    Poised? Confident?

To me she sounded arrogant, strident, screechy, all cutsey attack with no substance. A cheerleader for the RNC to laugh and hoot and boo along with.

And all women don't have this problem projecting their voices over crowd noise. Hillary, though, also comes across as strident and screechy, but better educated and more articulate.
