Now It's Time To Say Goodnight…
If there is any sort of spectacle more tedious than political conventions, I don't want to know about it. As the Republican National Convention comes to a close for today, you can give them this much: Fred Thompson and Joe Lieberman, two pols whose intensity levels jigger from nosferatu to comatose, put together as good a set of speeches as anyone could have wanted.
The shadow hanging over all this is what sort of pitch Sarah Palin will put together, but the RNC is off to a better start (I think) than the DNC was. And because of Summer Storm Gustav, it'll be a day shorter, too, which can only help. I cannot imagine that all the pro-war talk will play well with the American population, which soured on the Iraq War way back when. And while McCain may not represent George W. Bush's third term, he's got nothing going on in his own right. McCain-Feingold? Really awful, still.
The Republicans are in a bad place, deservedly so. They've spent too much, gone to war too much, curtailed liberty too much. It's far from clear that anything they can do in the next couple of days can dig them out of there.

We don't want to lose the War.
Fuck the Republicans.
I want to see every single Republican incumbent out on his (/her) ass. The Republican Party should be disbanded and banned.
Fuck the Democrats, too.
"The American People"-
2004 called. They want their campaign strategy back.
Nevertheless, I have no faith in the Democrats' ability to win. McCain wins, leaves after one term, Palin wins in 2012 and 2016 and Dems have no chance until 2020.

Must be wine thirty somewhere. It certainly is here at Casa de las Rocas Grandes, home of the Wine Commonsewer.
Cheers!
But! But! But! He has a hot fundy chick for VP that's supposed to change everything! Isn't it?
" If there is any sort of spectacle more tedious than political conventions . . ."

Our liberty has been curtailed? what the fuck are you typing about? I experience some minor incnvenience at the airport, god damn telemarketers are more of a nusiance...
"...but the RNC is off to a better start (I think) than the DNC was."
After watching the DNC last week and the RNC this week, I can't see how you came to that conclusion.
Thompson and Lieberman were certainly more animated than usual but the only time they could get a rise out of anyone was with an insult.
The RNC - compared to the DNC last week and the RNC in 2004 - is lame and seems half-hearted. There is zero passion compared to their 2004 convention.
They should just show back-to-back seasons of 24 instead of talking. That seems to be their message anyway, and it would be vastly more entertaining.
For somebody whose acting chops are supposed to give him an edge is the speech-delivery department, Thompson sure is a lackluster speaker. He can't read a teleprompter convincingly or muster the illusion of authenticity that makes for an entertaining speech. His L&O character is supposed to be bored and cynical, so that affect works on that show, but it sure doesn't carry over well to making speeches on TV.

AAAAAGGGGGHHHHHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Good one Epi! Uhhh my side...
"Nosferatu to comatose"...NICE.
Thompson's constant, throat-clearing cough was really disturbing...I got to the point where I was not even listening to him, instead waiting for the "uhhmm" before each phrase.
