Wow. Lately I'm beginning to think a broken clock is right more than twice a day. Payne has actually managed to be funny once again.

  2. HughAkston   17 years ago

And spot on, as well. He perfectly caught the true anti-industrial (anti-human) nature of the environmental movement.

    BTW, who are you Unter??

  3. ed   17 years ago

    Combustion is Murder

    Comedy gold.

  4. Untermensch   17 years ago

I'm a PhD student at Indiana University (yes, I know there's something hypocritical about being a libertarian at a state-run school). I'm originally from Alaska.

  5. jtuf   17 years ago

Great comic. Just imagine if all the research funds for global warming models went to solar energy research instead. Alas, it didn't, because environmentalists thought convincing the public they were right was more important than inventing a cost effective way to address their complaints.

  6. jtuf   17 years ago

    Untermensch,

At the PhD level, every program is state funded one way or another. Maybe the LP should hand out pamphlets at seminaries.

  7. dpsc   17 years ago

jtuf: would have been a drop in the bucket anyway. We're not at the point with solar where we could start a Manhattan style project. The best thing we can do is continue to fund material science departments, and they are well funded, because they are useful.

Someday we'll run everything on sun, air, and water. The best way to get there is to drive through.

  8. James Ard   17 years ago

jtuf, the environmentalists worst nightmare is cheap, clean energy. The purpose of the movement isn't to save the planet, it is to keep the people from having the energy that allows us to be free.

  9. Jim Henley   17 years ago

Wow. That cartoon has all the bracing wit of a rubber crutch ON a submarine with screen doors.

  10. stephen the goldberger   17 years ago

    i dont get it

  11. anonymous   17 years ago

What happens when the solar panels use up all of the sun's energy? Then what?!

  12. Episiarch   17 years ago

If only there was a clean, relatively cheap source of energy derived from free neutrons striking other particles. That would kick ass and free us from dirty energy sources such as coal. But that's just a pipe dream.

My decoder ring must be broken because I don't see a secret agenda/conspiracy in everybody's actions/doctrine.

  14. FREE D   17 years ago

    HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!

  15. Naga Sadow   17 years ago

    Episiarch,

Nuclear power? Tsk, tsk. You should know better than to even bring it up. Wouldn't be surprised if you are now on the enviromentalist's extermination list.

  16. Hyman G   17 years ago

If only there was a clean, relatively cheap source of energy derived from free neutrons striking other particles.

    It ain't cheap.

And you know what happens when you try to do it on the cheap?

    Boom, Head Shot.

Did we read a different comic?

  18. Art-P.O.G.   17 years ago

SWDWtLHJ, was it the decoder ring or conspiracy reference? (I can't keep up on all these newfangled rules)

  19. Mark   17 years ago

    It ain't cheap.

    http://www.nucleartourist.com/basics/costs.htm

Comparable to coal without externalities. Oh, wait--

  20. Douglas Fletcher   17 years ago

I once saw Al Gore at a gas station in Bethesda when he was still a junior Senator. I flipped him the bird.*

I wonder if that was the beginning of his environmental consciousness.

    * actually I didn't flip him the bird

  21. Pamento   17 years ago

Isn't this where Rick Barton is supposed to link to some new wave videos for us?

  22. dpsc   17 years ago

APOG: My decoder ring must be broken because I don't see a secret agenda/conspiracy in everybody's actions/doctrine.

You really shouldn't need a decoder ring for this. I've known a lot of the most important figures in the environmental movement since it's inception and I happen to believe that a lot of them are primarily motivated by agendas that they don't disclose directly.

But it's cool with me as long as you refrain, in the future, from making arguments suggesting that the drug warriors, BushCo, the telcos, Mississippi's patholgists, trial lawyers, corporate lawyers, KKK members, Stalinists, Maoists, Nazis, SLA members, etc., might sometimes hold views colored by their beliefs. After all, I'd need a lot of decoder rings to sort that out.

  23. Art-P.O.G.   17 years ago

    Mississippi's patholgists

Nice. I think you get extra credit for this one.

  24. joe   17 years ago

Every once in a while, I see something like this cartoon and thread, like something from another planet, and it reminds me why I come here:

to point and yell "Ha ha!" at the freaks.

    Ha ha, freaks!

  25. J   17 years ago

You know, this was almost close to being funny, which makes it an improvement over 95% of the comics here.

    Still crappy though

  26. dpsc   17 years ago

APOG: Nice. I think you get extra credit for this one.

Cool. I always was a bit of a brown-noser. It's good to be APOG approved.

    so perfect
