Coming Soon: Libertarian Convention Coverage

I'll be in Denver all weekend as the LP selects its 10th presidential nominee, and will be posting updates, photos and the like as regularly as I can. As far as I'm concerned its the only game in town right now, as Hillary Clinton has, sadly, contracted violent dementia.

Hillary Clinton has, sadly, contracted violent dementia.

Uh, no. We all knew this was coming. And it's great! The Convention of the Long Knives is coming, folks, so break out the booze and pull up a chair.

(This is one of the reasons I think McCain is going to win. The Democrats will be bitterly divided and he will be able to slide in to victory through that gaping hole*.)

    * how's that picture in your head?

  2. J sub D   17 years ago

We need a really excitable play by play guy to do an audio simulcast of the libertarian convention. Dick Vitale ot somebody of that ilk.

  3. Brandon   17 years ago

"We need a really excitable play by play guy"

It should totally be Wayne Root. He's a great communicator. Really great with the under 30 crowd.

  4. P Brooks   17 years ago

Don't forget your hard hat, Dave; the Denver cops are going to want a little "batting practice" prior to the Big Game.

And we want to see some good riot footage from the Boulder Mall.

  5. Warren   17 years ago

I'm looking forward to your coverage Dave. I'm expecting lots of YouTubes of people in funny hats.

Now supposing I was feeling a little bored here in sunny Colorado this weekend, the LP convention isn't the sort of thing you can just sorta show up at is it?

  8. creech   17 years ago

mtc: I think you can hang around the lobby, viist the exhibit hall withouta registering.
In the old days there was something like a $10 pass for business sessions, but no longer.

Start a blog. Then show up and ask for a press pass. I dunno if it'll work, but it's worth a try.

  10. ChrisO   17 years ago

Will this definitively answer the question of how many people you can fit in a phone booth?

  11. Rick Barton   17 years ago

    Here's the LP con info:

    http://www.lpconvention.org/register.php

We're really getting prepared for the possible violence here in Denver. "Personal weaponry" and gas mask sales are expected to be brisk....
    Oh yeah, that's the Dem's convention-Never mind.

On Denver talk radio, I promoted the LP convention as the intelligent person's alternative to attending the Dem convention.

  12. Chris Potter   17 years ago

We all knew this was coming. And it's great!

Well, I for one am shocked by this. Not by the fact that she's trying to get the delegates seated, but by the degree of vitriol she's spewing. She's already crossed the point, I think, where she'll never be able to get the nomination if she runs in 2012, and she might even be putting her Senate seat in jeopardy that same year -- not because the GOP has a prayer of winning it, but because the Dems might run a primary candidate against her.

  13. Shane Brady   17 years ago

Can someone find out why a crackpot like Richard C. Hoagland is speaking at the convention?

  14. Brock   17 years ago

Weigle, you weren't clear. Will these photos, updates, and the like be from the LP convention, or just of you and Dondero hot tubbin'?

  15. Citizen Nothing   17 years ago

    Brock,
What makes you think Weigle, Dondero and a hot tub won't BE the LP convention?

  16. P Brooks   17 years ago

Can someone find out why a crackpot like Richard C. Hoagland is speaking at the convention?

    It's the Libertarian covention.

    Silly wabbit.

  17. Orange Line Special   17 years ago

RCH isn't a "crackpot", he's ScienceAdvisor to what some dub "LibertarianRadio".

Since I'm sure Weigel will just mill around and won't ask anyone anything even remotely approaching a DifficultQuestion, he could consider doing something like this. Just kidding!

  18. Chris Potter   17 years ago

A Newsweek article about the LP's possible spoiler status in the fall, including a quote from our own Matt Welch! Unfortunately, they also refer to Ron Paul as "a Republican -- in name, at least."

  19. ChrisO   17 years ago

Political memories are short, and she'll be in a strong position for 2012 if Obama loses, regardless of what she said and did this year. The only strong Democratic opposition would be whoever gets picked for the VP nomination this year, and that person is unlikely to have Hillary's name recognition or "star power" in four years.

My guess is that she concedes at some point next month, but that her dirty tricks operation quietly continues its work and manages to slip a few anonymous packets of interesting information to whoever is running those things on the Republican side...that is if they don't tip off the media to any dirt on their own.

Oh, and senators from non-swing states winning reelection is the only thing that comes close to matching death and taxes in terms of certainty.

  20. P Brooks   17 years ago

Just imagine the four relentless years of "I told you so"s from the Clintonistas after Obama loses. If you thought the last two years of campaigning were hellish...

  21. Orange Line Special   17 years ago

Meanwhile, I've started a Bob Barr Watch.

I know that Weigel will go to bat for me and get my questions answered!

Just kidding about the last sentence again.

  22. Rick Barton   17 years ago

    Hey LoneWacko,

Remember when you supported the Iraq war and Raimondo over at Antiwar.com called you a "war bot" or some such?

(just good natured teasing-and it's true)

  23. Chris Potter   17 years ago

    ChrisO,

You have a point, but remember Nader is pretty much a pariah among most liberals who remember 2000. If there's any reason to believe she hamstrung Obama in the general this year, I think they'd make her pay in 2012.
