Democratic Debate Thread: The Affray in Austin
Another Democratic debate kicks off at 8 p.m. on the newfangled Cable News Network. Expect Hillary Clinton to hit Obama on experience, Obama to promise change, and… well, for basically every argument to echo the arguments of 9 months ago, but do so with meaner adjectives. Drink when you hear the words "Rezko," "ready," "lifted," (the soft version of "plagiarized") and "John Edwards" and you'll black out at 8:43 or so.
Thread away here.

Hillary needs John Kerry-scale debate performance, and while she's good, she's not that good.
And Lord knows, Barack Obama is no George Dubya Bush.
Kerry never recovered after he forgot about Poland.
Son of a bitch, a porn site bought "www.youforgotpoland.com"
That site used to have the funniest mashup video.

He was good at debating? I was still in high school during the last presidential primaries, so didn't have a real reason to pay attention.
dssa
One of them will steal Ron Paul's thunder and bring up the gold standard. Trottted out by somebody who doesn't look like a goofy old coot with a swastika tattoed on his butt, the issue might catch on.
JH,
Even Bush's post-debate spinners were forced to acknowledge that Kerry won all three debates, and had to try to minimize their importance.
I've never seen anything like it. It was like the panzers vs. the cavalry.

I actually think I remember seeing a photoshopped picture of Kerry with a dunce cap with a caption like "Just because I know more worthless trivia than Bush while debating means I should be president" or something just as badly wordy/sour grapes.
Perhaps you should go back to high school and learn how to close a tag.
Amateur. 😉
If they don't scream and yell at each other I'm going to be disappointed.
Off topic, but this is tyhe closest thing to an open thread today. At least until the debate starts.
Here is some important news. I'm a bit surprised it hasn't come up today. I wish I still had need to know access. Aegis was my baby back in the day. Obviously, huge advances are still being made in AAW. The Navy can and does keep capabilities and limitations secrets from the public, so I have to speculate on how far the state of the art has gone in the last 14 years.
Damn, 14 years is a long time. This is the first time I really missed the Navy since I retired.
I'll shut up now.
mmm... baby backs! Thanks J sub... Now I know what I'm doing this weekend. 🙂
Well put, asdfg.
The mortgage doubled in two weeks? I'm gonna go ahead and call bullshit on that.
OK, now, Senator Obama, you do
Ok, now. Senator Obama, you do your stump speech in four minutes.
Even Bush's post-debate spinners were forced to acknowledge that Kerry won all three debates, and had to try to minimize their importance.
Kerry won the first debate the second was a tie and Bush won the third.
As a Democrat partisan I expect you not to see that.
After Bush won the election it is pretty clear that the rest of the county saw it differently then you did.
Here is some video of that missile shoot I brought up.
I know I'm a nerd, but is that cool or what?
I thought the previous ones were bad*, but this is even worse: one of the questioners is Jorge Ramos, an admitted CulturalSeparatist who - despite living here for over a decade - refuses to become a citizen of the U.S.
Yes, that's right: a Mexican citizen is one of CNN's questioners. Let me know when CNN mentions that minor fact.
* Examples of how bad CNN is:

I would love to see a candidate not just go "I'm going to work to ease the embargo" but really let it hang all out there and "I will institute a free trade agreement with Cuba, and unilaterally if I have to."
If the Geordi-esque reversal in political polarity instigated by this move could be harnessed, we would be energy independent.
you could also flood the island with ipods.
Note how Hillary has played the bi-partisan card twice now.
Why is Hillary wearing a neck guard?
swipes at Bush ain't gonna get it done, Lady.
Kerry won the first debate the second was a tie and Bush won the third.
HA HA HA HA HA HAHA HA HAHA HA HAHA HA HAHA HA HAHA HA HAHA HA HAHA HA HAHA HA HAHA HA HA...
Ladies and Gentlemen, joshua corning. The guy who keeps calling me a partisan.
He always sounds hung over during debates.
Damn, Obama wanted to give a specific example of local suffering - which would be a cinch in rust belt Ohio - but obviously could not think of a good example in Texas
Listening to Obama on economics is painful.
I also wondered why she looks like a linebacker? Anyways, I am not a supporter of Bush, but his foreign policy has not been a complete failure like Clinton portrayed it. He has strengthened our ties with India, and he has engaged North Korea with at least a modicum of success. Of course, all of that is mitigated by Iraq, but he has done some good in foreign policy.
Oh good. Two lawyers discussing economic policy. That always works out well.
Mr Revard, you somewhat have a point, but it's still kinda of like the 'other than that, how'd like the play, Mary Todd.'
Barack Obama thinks he's so friggin' slick and masterly that he'd be able to talk the Cubans, Iranians, and North Koreans into doing what he wants. Or, at least, he used to. He seems to be backpedaling a bit.
But why shouldn't he? That guy has been talking people into things his entire life, and he is masterful at it. He talked the Chicago Police into supporting his bill requiring them to videotape the interrogations and confessions of murder suspects. Not that they're Kim Jong-Il, but still, that's pretty slick.
Obama/Clinton: "free trade is a bad idea. We want our resources being used to manufacture socks and sneakers." Uhhhh, no!
masterful. not masterly.
joe, you racist!
This is boring.
Obama: call Hillary a corrupt bitch.
Hillary: Call Obama a stupid newb who sleeps with slumlords.
Go!
China! You're going to Trade Time Out until you cut out the toxic choo-choos!
A trade prosecutor?????
FFS
Um, at best they may be 'houseless,' or at least 'real-estate asset deprived'
But the war on science crack was pretty good.
War on science? Is there anything we're not warring against?
If Hillary gets real desperate do you think she pursues this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVeFVtcdSYY
Somebody get that man a polygraph.
Jorge has an immigration question ...
RACISM!!!
Andrew Revard,
Bush's Africa policy has been better than Clinton's, and his and Rice's diplomacy was well done during the anti-Syrian uprisings in Lebanon.
But who cares? Iraq War.
I wonder if he would have been good at that "humble foreign policy" strategy.
I don't even have to look at that link and I know it is gay sex related.
"Innovation nation?" Is Kanye West writing for MC Hillary Clinton?
holy cow, here comes our favorite solitary crazy's topic
Ladies and Gentlemen, joshua corning. The guy who keeps calling me a partisan.
I voted for Badnarik Joe...you voted for Kerry.
And yes every partisan Democrat says just like you that Kerry won all 3 debates.
That does not change the result of the 2004 election after nearly the whole fucking county watched those three debates and choose the guy who you think lost.
Maybe in your fucked up head you can blame it on Nader or Ohio.
Is there anything we're not warring against?
Wind bag politicians apparently.
Hillary Clinton will raid your home if you don't practice proper American values.
I *love* how John King keeps using the word "manage" when it comes to the economy. "How will you, as president, manage the economy." Color me barfalicious.
You know if I was living the SW, I kinda like the shadows. But I burn pretty easy in the desert sun
I *love* how John King keeps using the word "manage" when it comes to the economy. "How will you, as president, manage the economy." Color me barfalicious.
Yeah, that kind of gives me chills. I was just surprised 'tax break' was in Obama's and Hillary's vocabularies.
"I *love* how John King keeps using the word "manage" when it comes to the economy. "How will you, as president, manage the economy." Color me barfalicious."
It's almost as bad as Clinton talking about "putting people to work."
Well, if I had my druthers, we could back to the 1910's Ellis Island model, where the 'backlog' was about 24 hours, plus an occasional quarrantine period, but I don't think that would get votes these days.
Not only do we have to make sure the US economy is working for the "non-rich," but also we have to make sure the Mexican economy is working for the "non-rich"?
Hilllary almost was able to use the Molly Ivins/ Ann Richards school of bush bashing with her smart way dumb way comment, but kinda missed the mark rhetorically
Am I the only person who is reminded of that one scene in Congo whenever people bring up "smart fencing"?
"Smart fencing". Nice.
Hillary sounds more conservative on immigration than McCain.
Wow--Hillary's bringing out the big words: "Eminent domain."
Too bad it's only going to be used in regard to the fence. (Not that the Feds can do all that much about the real problem, but whatevs.)
Senator Clinton, I can tell you what the locals think about the border fence right now from 3000 nm away.
The people whom own land where the fence will run though hate the idea; the people whom own land next to those people love it.
You want English to be the "official, unifying" language, but not the "official" language, Mrs. Clinton?
I miss Mike Gravel in these things.
My hat's off to everyone watching the debate tonight. You have greater intestinal fortitude than I.
You know, AKAIK the Romans never bothered to learn German (but for that matter the Hellenistic parts of the Empire never bothered to learn Latin, and stuck with Greek)
I'd vote for it, Kolohe. At least, compared to today's system.
A class of people open to persecution by the authorities or their neighbors at any moment, living in our society, is bad for our democracy, our society, and our well-being. The Ellis Island model, at least it didn't have that.
It's a pity McCain locked up the nomination so soon. I looked forward to seeing someone advocate automated machine-gun turrets in an immigration debate.
Paul would respond that the Constitution only allows lynching, of course.
Hillary Clinton must not know that popping your collar is no longer cool.
Addendum: the automated machine gun turrets would be located along the border, of course. My apologies to Mr. Tancredo for leaving out that detail.
What if, after Hillary did her little slam-Obama speech, and Cambell Brown asked, "Senator Obama, would you like to respond?" he'd said:
No. No, I wouldn't. Let's move on, Campbell.
Or as Elmer fudd would say, 'the wounded wahweeors of wahltor weed.'
I like that awkward grin Hillary has.
Or maybe thats Baba Wawa
I came in late, but it sounds like Obama so far is crushing Hillary.
Or as Elmer fudd would say, 'the wounded wahweeors of wahltor weed.'
Or Bawbawa Wahltohs.
I think Obama is so winning this thing.
I wish Obama was either not so likeable, or not so Democratish.
Pretty good Coup Fourr? as they say in Milles Bornes by Obama on the 'plagarism' scandal
But Change you can Xerox I also thought was pretty good, but apparently didn't get much love
Hillary's taking risks, she used the term "youtube". That was shaky ground, kind of like Bush and his "internets".
Adamness... I hear you. Just imagine Ron Paul (minus some undesirable letters) but with Obama's eloquence.
Obama shut the lid on the Deval Patrick scandal.
Hillary, trying to bring it back to life, looked quite unlikable.
If she's tired of health insurance companies, why does she take their money?
Obama did not handle that last bit as good as he could have
I wish they let Rudy in on this debate; he would wipe the floor with all of these clowns.
That is a very good point, Lev Strauss. I think both of these people go on the internet.
I don't think George Bush or Dick Cheney ever "went on the email."
I'll tell you how far Gore was ahead of his time: most lawyers his age write things on legal pads and make their secretaries type them up.
Am I evil if I do not believe everyone is entitled to health-care? Please say no...
Rudolph Guiliani lost debates in Republican Party venues to Ron Paul. Gimme a break.
Government and health care is a scary marriage.
Andrew- no.
Andrew,
Am I evil if I do not believe everyone is entitled to health-care? Please say no...
Did you have anyone particular in mind?
I wish they let Rudy in on this debate; he would wipe the floor with all of these clowns.
"On 9/11, I saw the importance of having healthcare."
"9/11 showed illegal immigration needs to end."
"If teachers didn't teach to a test, 9/11 wouldn't have happened. 9/11."
"Lobbying reform is 9/11 9/11. 9/11, 9/11, Islamofascism 9/11."
Kim Jong-Il, for example.
If Kim Jong-Il can't afford his heart medication, fine, fuck 'im.
Happy, Andrew?
Hillary is scaring the poop out of me right now.
You know normally I hate when candidates don't ATFQ, but in this case it's appropriate because that was such a crappy question
I do not beleive voluntary works?
Way to go Hillary...not
I don't think Clinton's interjection helped her.
And Obama's response won't help him.
Agreed, Kolohe. The CNN people have always strived to get Obama and Clinton to get into meaningless fights (what do you say about what he said you said he said?), and Hillary rose above it.
So we are all children in Hillary's world?
Jorge is one of the worst questioners I've seen in any of these debates. His desire for the spotlight makes Cooper look like Murrow.
Talk about an alley oop question from Jorge. If he stays pro Hillary at least there is an interesting subplot.
Hillary, you were a leader on homeland security? So, you voted to create the DHS, voted for the PATRIOT Act and voted for the War on Iraq? I thought you offered a break from the Bush doctrine?
Come to think of it, Jorge is the Bearded Spock Click n' Learn
I'll tell you how far Gore was ahead of his time: most lawyers his age write things on legal pads and make their secretaries type them up.
joe
Al might do the same thing if he was some kind of a lawyer or something. He is an ex-journalist and an ex-elected official.
Charlie Gibson when he was moderating asked the same question that King just did, but a helluva lot better
That's right, Gore didn't go to law school. Clinton went to law school, Hillary went to law school, Gore dropped out of divinity school.
Why are too many women grabbing Hillary's hands?
Obama gives good speeches, but his debating is terrible. He sounded very out of his element on the C&C issue.
Obama should pull a Price is Right strategy, and promise to begin to bring troops home in 59 days.
How many of the 'A person in town X told me blahblah" anecdotes do you think are true?
Wow, Obama turned the success of the surge to his advantage. And, he's right.
Obama, the last thing Central and South America need is more direct aid from the US. We've been playing that versions of that game since Monroe, and only really started to do good in the 90's where we pretty much left everyone alone and just traded with them
John McCain = Hillary Clinton
Foreign Aid. Chavez hates us because we don't give him enough money? I hope that was just words. That is what makes Obama so dangerous.
How many of the 'A person in town X told me blahblah" anecdotes do you think are true?
A young mother in Idaho told me that, uhhhhh, the personal anecdotes help her, ehhhh, connect with the candidates and see their, uh, their human side.
John McCain = Hillary Clinton + "my friends"
Nice coal ad.
"Our way of life" is going to change. We're not going to be burning frickin' rocks we dig up by blowing up mountains. Why don't we just burn horsh
Lev - Obama's point was that Chavez can be the great humanitarian of central/south America because the Unites States isn't. He'd prefer Chavez be marginalized.
Now that McCain is a perverted old man and all, and corrupt as well, does anybody think their great "friendship" is something more on those trips to Iraq? He could be Vince Foster's substitute.
Obama is easy to listen to, tonally, and easy to look at. Hillary is not. It's not fair or important...it's superficial...just sayin'.
Peter, I distinctly heard language that insinuated more Foreign Aid.
Obama's point was that Chavez can be the great humanitarian of central/south America because the Unites States isn't. He'd prefer Chavez be marginalized.
Which is of course why Obama is against all the trade deals with Central and South America (ok, not Peru, but CAFTA, Columbia, etc. plus outside the region South Korea), and NAFTA too.
Send them money, but for goodness sake don't buy anything from them, apparently.
Should we not let Chavez give aid, and in the process, bankrupt his regime? What we need in Venezuala, is the rise of a Pinochet-esque leader.
There is definitely federal pork in Arizona, just like there is pork in the remaining 49 states, D.C, Puerto Rico, Guam, CNMI, USVI, and CNMI.
It just may not be in the form of earmarks.
damn that should be american samoa for the 2nd CNMI. But CNMI did get a lot of stuff esp in the Abrmoff era
Obama should pull a Price is Right strategy, and promise to begin to bring troops home in 59 days.
He should bid $1 for it.
Definitely a question you want to be the 2nd to respond to
Did Hillary just use her husband's infidelity as an applause line?
Dude is she going to cry again?!
"People ask me, how do you do it"?! Good gosh
Dude is she going to cry again?!
I really hope not, but it looks like she's on her way.
You gotta love this crowd on the most challenging moment question. "Yeah! Woooh! Hooray! Hillary's husband got blown in the White House! She was humiliated on the national stage!"
This is a damn strong ending for Clinton
They cut her off before she cries, but she seems to insist and keep going.... ah, she did not afterall, oh wait... she's about... not they're done. On another day may be.
Pork is for amateurs, real politicians write legislation, with the help of corporations, they hold influential positions on commmittees, have deeper contacts, and hide their money a whole lot better than some of those two bit charlatans like Huck and Giuliani. Their friends and families get consulting jobs, they drift off into lobbying or speaking when they are done. They get paid for more than speaking. McCain is an established national figure, not seeking to become one.
This is a damn strong ending for Clinton
Was anyone watching the people meter on that?
Obama would be stronger than HRC on earmarks, because he does have the Coburn collabaration that made some results.
Clinton just nailed that ending.
HRC stole Paul's line again about borrowing from China to buy oil from Saudi. Did she plagarize?
That ending made me want to puke.
Mo
The Democrats responded to her being attacked so much during her hubs years in office. It did seem a bit much to most non-right wing partisans...
Hmmmmm, Candy Crawley. Erm, I mean Chelsea Clinton.
"Should we not let Chavez give aid, and in the process, bankrupt his regime? What we need in Venezuala, is the rise of a Pinochet-esque leader."
Are you sure that it's not Andrew Retard?
You prefer Pinchet to Chavez?
In Venezula you can walk into an opposition party's hq, with a paper critical of Chavez tucked 'neath your arm and call in to a talk show in the US to criticize Chavez.
Would you like to have tried that under Pinochet?
Why the hate on Chavez, he's the man!
*sips latte with che t-shirt on*
CNN @ 9:00 p.m. EST:
'what are the differences between y'all?'
[almost 1/2 hr of differences, almost exclusively about health care]
CNN @ 9:52 p.m EST:
'there are no significant differences between these two candidates health care plana'
I'd absolutely prefer Pinochet to Chavez.
The play on my last name is hackneyed, but good job, anyways. I do prefer a leader in the vain of Pinochet, Salazar, or even Franco. They may have been more authortarian, but the Chilean, Portugeese, and Spanish economic miracles are difficult to ignore.
I would have said Obama won until Hillary killed that last question. You saw the best (last question) and worst (xerox line) of Hillary tonight. Polls will tell what people remember/care about.
Unless that last line has serious traction I still say Obama wins either Ohio, Texas, or both and buries her march 4th.
CNN @ 9:56 p.m.
'clinton was able to exploit somewhat her differences on health care'
typo-vein*
Dave Weigel was wrong on almost everything.
Clinton was winning on points at the beginning until Obama got a knock down with the plagarism thing. She was then lagging until the very end, but probably overcame the deficit with her closing remarks.
It will really help her if they start replaying that ending in this next news cycle.
Andrew,
Yeah those guys are great, unless you disagree with them. Then it's off to the death camps. But per capita GDP jumps up 20%, so it's worth it. Right? Eggs, omelettes and all that.
Cesar and Revard
Venezula has seen years of straight growth lately. And what's this Spanish and Portugese miracle tied to Franco and Salazar?
But besides that, you would prefer a dictator who allowed no opposition party or elections and enforced that with killing people extrajudicially with a man who nationalized some industries and regulated a few media outlets out of existence? WTF?
Obama is a bit of a Fascist. Endorsed by Daniel Ortega last week. Pretty scary.
I can't see how any Libertarians could support him and still claim to be Libertarians.
That last post was not from me of course
I imagine the author would be the dumbass upthread with the "che" comment.
I have to agree on Obama. As bad as the Hill-thighs is, she's 10 times better than the Malcom X impersonator. He represents pure evil.
Can't see voting McCain, but I hope the Libertarian Party nominates someone worth supporting.
I look at it this way: Clinton represents almost no freedom. She's maybe a 10 or 15 on the freedom scale. Pitiful.
But Obama is near 0. This is a guy who got a 100 score from the National Journal for being the most Socialist member of the Senate.
If it's Obama on the Democrat side, I may even vote McCain.
Well they seem to have the exact same platform except Obama doesn't want to fine citizens for not wanting to be a part of his socialized healthcare plan, but hillary does.
Other things Hillary wants to do:
1. Put a moratorium on house foreclosures for 18 months
2. freeze interest rates for FIVE YEARS
So to claim Obama as being more socialist than her doesn't really ring true to me.
If the dude spoofing handles had a girlfriend, do you think she's be proud of him?
Now hold on: think about the kind of girlfriend he'd have.
23% inflation and liquid gold under them. cmon now MNG.
So, did they both die?
think about what joe's got and compare it to what i got and then ask yourself: what do you think my girl wants?
Obama is easy to listen to, tonally, and easy to look at. Hillary is not. It's not fair or important...it's superficial...just sayin'.
Yeah, she's really hard to look at for right-wing assholes with little tiny cocks. I mean she's a smart, articulate successful woman. What a fucking downer.
Joe I have a very beautiful imaginary girlfriend I'll have you know!
" I mean she's a smart, articulate successful woman."
Riding her husband's coattails and getting a senate seat as a consolation prize is your idea of success?
-jcr
Riding her husband's coattails and getting a senate seat as a consolation prize is your idea of success?
I'm not going to vote for her, and I don't like her, nor am I a Democrat, but that's not really correct. Had she not married someone who eventually became a Governor & then President, she still would have ended up being what most would consider a successful human being.
I just uploaded a video about a part of the debate that no one else has picked up on and everyone else - even CNN's critics - will ignore despite it being rather important.
I found this comment from Clinton interesting:
"I want to stop the health insurance companies from discriminating against people because they're sick. You know, it's unconstitutional to discriminate on the basis of race or gender or ethnic origin or religion, but it's okay to discriminate against sick people and we're gonna end that, because it's time we said, 'no more.'"
What part of the Constitution is she referring to?
Good point voxpo! I think she was referring to 14th amendment. But its pretty scary if a former lawyer and presidential candidate buys into that interpretation of the amendment. I hope she wouldn't appoint judges who think like that, but she would. Sigh! I'm going to go eat my Entenmmanns before Hillary takes 'em away. (ten points if you can guess what clause of the constitution she'll misinterpret to take 'em away!)
it's October now.
"What part of the Constitution is [Hillary] referring to?"
This part:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=GhqnUFPKQAc
Why are too many women grabbing Hillary's hands?
To keep from hitting the floor as they swoon over Obama. 😛
"Change you can Xerox" vs. "change you can stick a fork in"... advantage: Xerox.
Yeah, HRC would be successful, but a senator? Its possible, she is a good politician. But she has shamelessly ridden Bill's legacy to the place she is now. And most infuriatingly she denies it vehemently and calls you sexist if you point it out. But most female leaders get there through nepotism. Its a shame that the person who might be the first female president would be an awful president and would have gotten there on the good will built up by her husband.
I like that awkward grin Hillary has.
In the earmark section of the debate, Hillary referred to the "...wastefulness of tax cuts..."
Now we know whose money it is.
Dem wrote:
Yeah, she's really hard to look at for right-wing assholes with little tiny cocks. I mean she's a smart, articulate successful woman.
I can see why you appreciate her being articulate...
Obama can marry my daughter.
H Clinton is not likeable, but who cares because she would likely govern from the center like B Clinton. The fact that she is so disliked by Republicans would probably mean more of the 1990s magic, where a caustic mix of Newt G and Bill Clinton led to improved welfare, a declining national debt and reduced military expenditures. She won't win, though, and either the more charismatic Obama or somewhat more charismatic McCain will win and be able to exert more power over congress.
Venezula has seen years of straight growth lately.
You can tell by the food shortages.
How many of the 'A person in town X told me blahblah" anecdotes do you think are true?
Only the first one ever told.
If the dude spoofing handles had a girlfriend, do you think she's be proud of him?
Now hold on: think about the kind of girlfriend he'd have.
The retarded 12 year old down the street. Damn you joe for making me think of that.
Welcome to Venezuela, political thug and death squad free since, oh, never mind . . .
http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/info/AMR53/006/2002
He talked the Chicago Police into supporting his bill requiring them to videotape the interrogations and confessions of murder suspects.
The CPD went along with it after Obama conviced them it would increase the police failure rate which would translate into public support for more cops and higher salaries. And they were promised an exemption for being taped in internal questioning about their own murders.
As a life-long Chicagoan, I see a north-side Democrat and a south-side Democrat trying to decide something.
We're all fucked.
That's right, Gore didn't go to law school. Clinton went to law school, Hillary went to law school, Gore dropped out of divinity school.
And Obama dropped from heaven!
Obama should pull a Price is Right strategy, and promise to begin to bring troops home in 59 days.
The actual TPIR strategy is to say "1".
But Ron Paul already used that.
