Ron Paul's House Primary: Pedenmentum!
Roger L. Simon of PajamasMedia has posted a friendly interview with Ron Paul challenger Chris Peden, and it makes for a good read. Here, for example, is Peden's explanation for entering the race.
The very first and foremost [element] was he announced he was running for president. And if you looked on a map, District 22 and District 14 of Texas kind of lap each other and they are intertwined, and CD 22 was the district that Tom DeLay was the Republican representative of for many years. We had an instance in which Tom DeLay resigned and he was on the ballot as the Republic nominee. And we had a special election and we lost that seat to the Democrats.
So, I did not want to see, number one, if Ron Paul was successful or decided to run and go on to something, even a third party — I didn't want the 14th district to have a special election and possibly lose that seat to a Democrat.
How selfless of him! I guess Peden hinted at this in his announcement speech, but he seemed a bit more motivated by Paul failing to vote the Republican line on things: "The new CD 14 needs a fighter not an academic." Also, the story of how DeLay's seat went Democratic is, eh, a bit more complicated… and it doesn't reflect well on Peden.
More on why Peden opposes Paul:
As we began to see him more and more during the presidential debates and some of his positions and stances he took, I began to realize more and more that he didn't really represent this district at all. His traditionally missing votes in the fourth quarter — if you look at his record, it's not just while he's been out for president; he's done that historically. And also, he doesn't really do much. He had 350 bills since January of '97 that he's authored; 6 have made it out of committee and none have ever been passed into law according to reports and records.
Peden simply rejects Paul philosophy as a legislator. OK: That's a fair choice to offer the electorate. If Peden's elected, I suppose CD-14 can expect more funding for NASA, which is Reaganesque if we're talking about the pre-1964 version of Reagan. More on Paul:
His political views are very rarely expressed in his political advertisements, except for vaguely, you know, he's for the Constitution. I don't know of anybody running for office who's running against the Constitution.
Sure, they don't say they are. Also, this simply perplexes me:
He says — and I've never heard him say this, but his policies that he's been talking about would lead you to believe that his followers think Dick Cheney did this war so that he could benefit or profit from the KBR involvement and it would increase his personal wealth. Yet he stumps for the gold standard on a regular basis and all of his personal holdings are in gold or gold mining companies.
This would be relevant if Paul was pushing for an invasion of Switzerland. He is, in fact, not. Meanwhile, I wonder why Republicans don't worry that the Libertarian Party is ready to give Paul its nomination if he's bounced out of Congress. I talked about this with LP Executive Director Shane Cory.
He's eligible for the nomination as long as he's willing to accept the nomination before the convention on Memorial Day weekend. There are really three hurdles, and he can get over them. You need to qualify to be a member of party--which he is. You need to be willing to accept the nomination before convention, and you need to inform the delegates.
Polls suggest that McCain is already in trouble in states like Nevada and Colorado, which have strong Republican pockets of support for Paul. Can he afford Paul on the ballot sucking 3-4 percentage points away from him, making it possible for Obama to carry the states with 48 or 49 percent?

I wonder if Peden has ever written a newsletter.
Basically Peden opposes Paul for all the wrong reasons. Shame where there are so many right reasons to oppose him. But that would require Peden to be a libertarian who opposes the paleoconservative agenda on immigration, church & state, abortion, earmarks, etc. On the other hand the one good thing about Peden is that he's not a wack job when it comes to tinhat conspiracy theories about international bankers, the "NAFTA Superhighway", the "North American Union" and other Bircher fantasies.
I'm not sure it's a safe assumption that votes for an LP-backed Ron Paul would come exclusively, or even mostly, from McCain.
But good post about the Texas race.
Ron Paul running on the LP ticket would be the only thing that would keep me interested in this fucking race.
But would a Paul/Root 08' ticket be good for libertarianism as a whole?
all of his personal holdings are in gold or gold mining companies.
I wish I could say the same.
I know it's about as likely as a Jesus/Vishnu ticket, but McCain/Paul could beat either of the Dems. It's the only way I'd vote McCain anyway...
I know it's about as likely as a Jesus/Vishnu ticket
Very funny galthran.
Way to totally biff the possibility of a joke headline using "Pedent" or "Pedenphile", Dave.
lol?
Chris Peden will get beat like a drum. When you have to claim Ron Paul is pro-abortion to get votes, you're just a pathetic hack.
Don't you mean a Paul/McCain ticket? I suppose a McCain/Paul might work, but wouldn't we all be praying for John's death?
"Can he afford Paul on the ballot sucking 3-4 percent away from him, making it possible for Obama to carry the states with 48 or 49 percent?"
That would be so sweeeet if Ron Paul denied McCain the election in that way.
How is there any conflict with supporting gold standard and having gold holdings? Isn't that a logical investment if you believe gold is a better alternative to paper money?
How is there any conflict with supporting gold standard and having gold holdings? Isn't that a logical investment if you believe gold is a better alternative to paper money?
I think Peden is basically saying Ron Paul is a shill for Big Gold.
This twit appeared on NPR the other night. He stated that he opposed Paul because Paul "does not support the troops." While I realize that it would be wrong to institute the death penalty for stupidity like that, surely making the "failure to be gung-ho on the Iraq war equals failure to support the troops" argument should be enough to disqualify one from holding office. Should be....
I think Paul's right about avoiding a 3rd-party run. He wouldn't win, and he's already built a substantial movement inside of the Republican party. As long as it remains in the Republican party, Republicans have an incentive to make some accommodations to secure their votes. If the movement goes to a 3rd-party, then the Republicans have no reason not to just write-off their votes. And given Paul's new standing in the party, he's likely to have some influence he hasn't had in the past.
Paul "does not support the troops."
and yet, the troops support Ron Paul.
ahhh, the bittersweet taste of poetic justice...
"surely making the "failure to be gung-ho on the Iraq war equals failure to support the troops" argument should be enough to disqualify one from holding office."
Then there would hardly be any Republicans in office.
Way to totally biff the possibility of a joke headline using "Pedent" or "Pedenphile", Dave.
I prefer "Pedenmonium", myself.
And given Paul's new standing in the party, he's likely to have some influence he hasn't had in the past.
Not if he loses his seat.
Don't be a Pedent, Warty.
Republicans have an incentive to make some accommodations to secure their votes.
... we shall see. I'm not seeing it happening with McCain at the top of the ticket in 2008. The Paulites -- not to mention the even larger horde of Huckabees -- are desperate for an alternative to McCain. Hell, 75,000+ people even voted for Romney in the WA primary yesterday.
If a stong 3rd party "conservative"/"libertarian"/"constitutionalist" candidate emerged, I could see him getting 15-20% of the vote in November.
The ensuing four years of Republican meltdown would sure be entertaining...
I might have been able to hold my nose and vote for Huckabee or Romney, but not for Rudy or McCain.
When I asked for the job of PCO, I promised the county party chairman that I would vote Republican no matter who the party nominated.
Looks like I'll be writing in Ron Paul.
In fact, I think I'll create a stencil to put the words "WRITE IN" on all the Ron Paul signs in my neck of the woods.
Historically, Ron has always worried about losing his seat (at least that's what his fundraising letters say) and then he comfortably wins. Should the GOP put a pile of money behind Peden and cost Paul the race this time, then they are acting very foolish. Maybe Ron Paul wouldn't then choose to run as an independent. But a lot of his followers could make things tough for some of the GOP congressmen around the country who are in competitive races. At the margins, 2 or 3% staying home or voting third party could cost the GOP far more than letting Ron Paul keep his seat for another term or two.
Then there would hardly be any Republicans in office.
This is true. I can live with that, especially if we also eliminate the Dems.
I honestly can't tell if the creatures peddling that line are demagouges or just that stupid. Perhaps it's both, and they convince themselves to believe stupid things in the name of securing power. It worked for O'Brien, right?
Paul's Wisconsin numbers: 19,210 votes statewide
compare with Ed Thompsopn's 185,000 as the LP candidate for Governor in 2002, and my 51,000 on a $626 budget as a libertarian Democrat in the Primary v Herb Kohl in '06.
I don't really think Ron Paul has any new found standing in the GOP. They all still hate him. He has said on numerous occassions he won't endorse the eventual winner so the party will further brush him and his supporters aside. That reminds me. I have to change my registration back to LP.
Ben Masel! how are ya, man?
You do realize that at least half of those 185,000 people voting for Ed thought they were voting for Tommy, right?
Anyway, keep on smokin' buddy. Nice to see you roaming around here...
peace
"If a stong 3rd party "conservative"/"libertarian"/"constitutionalist" candidate emerged, I could see him getting 15-20% of the vote in November."
Has anybody heard any scuttlebutt about Barr running on a Libertarian/Constitution ticket? I read somebody mention that at the antiwar.com blog yesterday.
Revised Peden campaign graphic. Up for grabs.
I honestly can't tell if the creatures peddling that line are demagouges or just that stupid. Perhaps it's both, and they convince themselves to believe stupid things in the name of securing power. It worked for O'Brien, right?
You betrayed us, Conan!
Has anybody heard any scuttlebutt about Barr running on a Libertarian/Constitution ticket? I read somebody mention that at the antiwar.com blog yesterday.
Paul/Barr 08'
That seems like some sort of protein supplement...
I guess I could vote for Bob Barr ... even though he was such a prick during MonicaGate.
Better option than that WARoot guy, that's for sure...
Impeach Cheney...Ron Paul gets the Republican ticket by default...period. The McCain warlord can't win anyway.
Those who know say that impeachment of Cheney would take a week at most.
Let's get on with the impeachment!
Do I hear the Kingfish? I think he meant "fallacious".
Is Chris related to libertarians Joe & Dan?
That's the thing that's long bothered me about Ron Paul -- that he's more interested in symbol than substance. I think he could've been a lot more effective along the lines that Mr. Peden stated above.
Let's see... if McCain wins the Republican nomination and Hilliary wins the democratic one then... wouldn't a Third Party for Ron Paul have a good chance at winning the white house?
Either way I will NOT be voting for McCain no matter what... I will be "writing in" Ron Paul. I don't see how there is any other choice.
Peden is that he's not a wack job when it comes to tinhat conspiracy theories about international bankers
To believe that bankers don't accommodate their own mutual (class) interest through the Federal Reserve system before any other interest is accommodated is naive at best (cynical at worst if you are attempting to suppress dissent from the party line).
If I were a cosmo I would also try to be careful not to conflate historical matters that could be construed as conspiratorial with Austrian economic theory on the nature of fractional reserve banking. Many of you, including Postrel, tend to embarass your selves by doing this.
A hell of a time to be defending the status quo, btw. How's that dollar doing ya?
and other Bircher fantasies
The one Bircher I actually somewhat know is a decent fellow and quite racially tolerant. It is part of the NatReview mythos that Buckley drove out the most scurilous elements of the Right, Birchers, Randians, Rothbardians
for mostly racialist matters. Birchers and libertarian Republicans were shown the door because of their opposition to the Vietnam War.
Every bill before congress expands the size of government. I don't know what more you can do to work for smaller government than to keep voting "no".
If a stong 3rd party "conservative"/"libertarian"/"constitutionalist" candidate emerged, I could see him getting 15-20% of the vote in November.
The ensuing four years of Republican meltdown would sure be entertaining...
Yes it would. The Neocons and Social Conservatives have huge lobbies. If Fiscal Conservatives and Libertarians don't cost the Republicans elections they won't have any need to pay attention to them. Or am I just on crazy pills?
Paul shouldn't run third party, act as a libertarian leader and win his seat for Congress. There is still the Newsletter business and he has done more than his part for the movement. There needs to be a Ron Paul candidate, somebody that can take this movement to the next level, growth. Preferably somebody very similar in viewpoints, younger, and more charismatic. Ron is too nice, we need someone more combative. We also need to think past 2008 because it isn't happening. The real emphasis should be on Congress since all those Repub schmucks are leaving.
Damn you, Peden! I thought with the end of the Paul prez campaign the freedom-lover sites would shut the hell up about Ron Paul day and night and go back to talking about...oh, I don't know...maybe freedom or something. But nooooo.....
Chris Peden is a liar.... I called his office to point out mistakes on his website and his rude staff went on and on about Ron Paul being a liberal... I made it very clear a family member lives in Paul's district and that I wanted them to correct there website.. My point? Well, Chris implies he is a Christian yet he bears fales witness?
In closing. Peden has written sevearl postive articles about Ron Paul... Just google them and you will find them.
By the way we are starting to see the seeds of liberty grow as more and more people are claiming they are running as Ron Paul republicans. I won my local GOP char as a Ron Paul republican and the pro Rudy and Mitt crowd voted for me on a local level. I plan to run for mayor in 2009 and expect to do well.
In closing Peden is nothing more then a fake conservative the same kind who sold out our nation to begin with... Just look at his site it's not very differant then Bush's agenda.
One more thing I visited my family when Paul held his recent rally... Ron Paul must have had 800-900 people at his and the very same day at the same center I visted Peden and he had less then 50 people.
I support Ron Paul 100% and if you live in Paul's district you have only one choice who has always treated our nation with respect don't trust Peden who is already lied.
I would like to see the two in a debate... I wonder if Peden is man enough to accept a debate? For that matter I wonder if McCain or Hucakbee would accept a 1:1 debate?
@wmb:
Nafta Superhighways exist in the a constantly fluctuating state between existence and non existence, primarily to aid those that blather on about tinfoil hats when others are pointing out perfectly onerous Pork.
@weigel:
Nice job on the RP newsletters BTW. Over time it comes out to be quite a yellow bit of journalism. Now you seem to offer a different tack WRT Paul in the congressional seat challenge. However, I now know that when *you* are critical of someone I now know to not assume that the article is entirely based on factual reporting. It's more of a highly reasonable seeming thing, slightly laced with facts, that consists mostly of directed and composed, carefully crafted entertainment.
@alan, thank you for being a fair apologist wrt birchers et al.
Not to say there aren't racist birchers lurking in the woodwork, wmb would probably hesitate to say it though if he thought he'd be labelled as bearing a head suited for tinfoil coverage. He'd be out of the *in* cosmotarian crowd after all, and he can't have that now can he? People would ridicule him at his idyllic cutesy Washington CATO parties where everyone is drinking Coors and fine wine out of boxes.
Guilt By Association, and poison pills on hot-button issues by those with vested interests in splitting their opposition into tidy little bickering chunks is what wmb has fallen prey to. In short, he's a tool.

Better option than that WARoot guy, that's for sure...
Anyone heard Root's commercials since he started his campaign? "I'm Wayne Allan Root, WAR!". Subliminal enough?
I hate to say this, but any Republican has about as much chance in getting elected this cycle as a Libertarian do every other election cycle. The average people don't pay attention to the issues the way that we do.
Prepare to see a HUGE voter turnout and a landslide victory for whichever democrat wins the primary.
Ron Paul will never run as a Libertarian again because election laws are stacked against third party candidates.
Ron Paul supporters should stay Republicans and try to rebuild the Republican party. The Republican party should welcome conservative libertarians as well. I'd suggest that Ron Paul Republicans move to the Libertarian party, but election laws ensure that the Libertarian party has a much smaller voice in the national political theater.
After a long internal debate (about a minute or less) I have decided that I will not accept a Vice Presidential offer from McCain. I will, however, entertain conversations from the Ron Paul camp if I don't have to move to DC, unless I'm allowed to carry concealed.
Chris Pedo really loves to teach the Sunday schoolers. He loves being around kids... A LOT. He's a Larry Craig+ type conservative.
Cheers!
You want to know something ironic? The Bircher I mentioned was a journalism and communications major at my college in the early 90's when I attended. His first professional gig out of college was with the Wall Street Journal!
Reason sucks
Would have been nice if Ron Paul had seen this type off support before Super Tuesday and more than half the primaries were done.
Instead Reason choose to smear him.
Good article, but I still feel like puking because it is on Reason.
Way to totally biff the possibility of a joke headline using "Pedent" or "Pedenphile", Dave.
Yeah, "pedenmentum" sounds like something the dermatologist would scrape off a really nasty cyst.
Chris Peden is a neocon tool.
How can someone like that live with themselves?
Has he no conscience?
Josh,
You are right. Many people at Reason ran and hid when the newsletters were excavated. Too bad. Ron Paul coulda been a contender.
I supported Ron Paul's presidential campaign with both monetary contributions and volunteer efforts. I still hold him in high esteem; however, I won't shed any tears if he loses his congressional seat. Why?
Because Paul has proven himself to be utterly incompetent and, therefore, made himself totally irrelevant. More than $20 million was raised for Paul's campaign. Where did it all go? How was it spent? It is clear that it was not effectively or efficiently managed.
Paul is exactly right in his criticisms of government waste, but how did he do in spending the money provided to him by the thousands of grassroots contributors to his campaign? He did no better than any of the spendthrift federal agencies he rightly criticizes. If I recall correctly, he spent more than $1 million per delegate earned. That is beneath contempt, and beyond pathetic.
And then there was the "newsletter controversy." Paul not only had no honest, intelligent, or thoughtful response when the news inevitably broke once again. Instead, he lied and claimed that he "couldn't remember" or "didn't know" who wrote the toxic comments. So much for Dr. No's ballyhooed integrity.
I do hope Paul wins, because it will end all of the clamor for him to become the LP nominee. The LP has enough problems without having to deal with the likely influx of 9/11 truthers, anti-Semites, racists and other cranks and kooks who have been drawn like moths to a flame by Paul's candidacy. That could sink the LP not merely for decades, but permanently.
I have come to the sad conclusion that Paul is a good man, but he is seriously flawed in some significant ways. Those flaws have rightly kept him from being a serious presidential contender. And he will have no one to blame but himself if they cause him to lose his congressional seat.
Andrew Taylor, you are so pathetic. You're upset because you gave some time and money for Ron Paul and he isn't going to be elected our next President, get over it. Ron Paul used your money just fine I'm sure, what he couldn't buy is respect from his party contenders, the Gop itself, and the moguls who own the MSM. If the MSM decides to marginalize and/or ignore you then you don't have a chance. People are sheep for the most part. Be proud of attempting to bring about the change that is necessary rather than sulking over your personal losss and sense of defeat.
Wow, Scott, you are able to heap odium on the heads of those with whom you disagree even "better" than Eric Dondero. That's quite a remarkable achievement. Congratulations on reaching new lows in your chosen field of expertise.
I've posted here numerous times that I never expected Paul to win, so I'm hardly "upset because [I] gave some time and money for Ron Paul and he isn't going to be elected our next President." I'm disappointed and disgusted precisely for the reasons that I outlined in my previous post -- including the fact that he raked in $20 million and achieved almost nothing with it. "Ron Paul REVOLution"? Give me a break!
I would respond to the rest of your comment, but it would likely only exacerbate your irrationality, so I'll not give you further reasons to display your considerable "gift."
Also, if Ron Paul officially drops out of the presidential race, can't he turn around and use the cash collected for his senatorial race?
Given that Ron Paul can't have possibly thought he had a realistic chance at the presidency, was this nothing more than a devious way of raising a hell of a lot of money to defend his congressional seat?
The Paulbots may have to admit they're in the position of the 20-year old college student who wakes up in a Las Vegas whorehouse with his pants around his ankles, an aching head, and missing wallet.
STOP THE PRESSES!!!!!!!
HUGE NEWS BREAKING! This is one all libertarians can unite behind.
The Sac Bee, RedState.com, National Review and others are reporting that California State Senator and libertarian Republican TOM MCLINTOCK is just days away from declaring a run for US Congress.
They're saying that he'd be the instant frontrunner for the John Doolittle seat in CD 4.
This could be the greatest news of the year for ALL LIBERTARIANS.
Actually grumpy, Paul is in a bit of a pickle. If he bows out of the presidential race, he loses a chance for primetime speaking time at the GOP convention yet he really needs to focus on and use his warchest for his congressional race.....Keep your seat or primetime at the Convention? Oh what is a Goldbug to do
Ron Paul has been talking about the issue facing this country for years. He is a man of integrity and is standing up for the people! What this election has taught me is just how corrupt Washington D.C. is and oh, not to mention the morons in the MSM, including FAUX News. We The People need to stand up for ourselves because besides Paul, no else is going to! Ron Paul in Congress or President, we need him to light the way!
If Paul thinks he is going to get a speaking spot at the Republican convention by continuing his quixotic campaign for the presidency, he's more than a poor steward of the millions entrusted to him by his supporters...He's positively delusional.
Pat Buchanan's only appearance when he ran against Bob Dole in 1996 was at the very end of the convention, when he was allowed to come out and wave to the crowd after all of the festivities were largely completed, and as the confetti was falling -- thereby obscuring him from sight of the television viewers.
The notion that Paul is going to get a speaking slot at the McCain convention is about as likely as me getting a speaking slot, and I'm not a Republican, and I'm not running for anything.
Such a pedenstrian article! This idiot has obviously been set up on a pedenstal by the neocons to serve as an impedenment to Ron Paul's congressional chances. But seriously ...
In St. PAUL the national delegates will be faced with a hard choice: do we allow John McCain to be nominated and thereby commit Party suicide? or do we violate the rules and put together a winning Paul/Romney ticket?
The Republican Party is not a government with inviolable laws. It is a private organization with some "rules". One commentator, when reflecting on the Democratic rules allowing only half the number of delegates for states setting their primaries "too early," observed that in a deadlocked convention those rules would likely be subject to suspension. Likewise the rule that "requires" "committed" delegates to vote, at least on the first ballot, for a certain candidate who "won" them, is just as subject to being ignored if it becomes obvious that following that rule to the letter would set up the party not only for certain defeat in the General election, but in all likelihood for permanent extinction.
Paul being on the ticket is what will guarantee a win by bringing along those of his millions of supporters who would otherwise write his name in. And he must occupy the presidential spot in order to be a credible incentive for bringing in Democrat crossovers with his anti-war record and position that far outshines Hillary and Obama.
Romney, though Paul's opposite on foreign policy, is at least pointed in the right direction on domestic issues, and would bring along a lot of his own anti-McCain supporters. Both have their own strengths as debaters, and could easily wipe the floor with Obama and Hillary respectively.
"I do hope Paul wins, because it will end all of the clamor for him to become the LP nominee. The LP has enough problems without having to deal with the likely influx of 9/11 truthers, anti-Semites, racists and other cranks and kooks who have been drawn like moths to a flame by Paul's candidacy. That could sink the LP not merely for decades, but permanently."
You raise a few legitimate points about the good Doctor, but the fear that he would endanger the Libertarian Party's popularity and respectability seems slightly misplaced to me.

You're cute.
The Sac Bee, RedState.com, National Review and others are reporting that California State Senator and libertarian Republican TOM MCLINTOCK is just days away from declaring a run for US Congress.
Hush now, Eric. You'll jinx him.
hello,
i don't know of anybody running for office who's running against the Constitution.
Hell if I were Paul I would enlist Anonymous to take over the convention and let the party begin
I will be voting for Ron Paul.
Paul with a big lead over Peden?

Aren't you guys tired of holding up the signs in the rain yet? The Libertarian Philosophy is fundamentally flawed and will never advance in its pure form. Market Economy...give me break it's flawed to its core! A real visionary would recognize this and introduce Libertarian version 2.0 with progressive ideals instead of trying to turn back the clock. Life is leaving you in the dust and you don't even no it. Ron was completely ineffective in Congress and barely a blip on the radar for President. Regardless of his politics he was a terrible communicator?Has to be the worst public speaker I have ever seen, mumble, bumble, scatter brained with no focus. I mean it was embarrassing to watch and I new exactly what he was talking about. Boys and girls I've done my research so please don't ask me to read the Constitution again.
Why don't you Libertarians support the current Libertarian candidates? The ideals are 99% the same and these guys can give a focused speech and debate correctly. Root is a heck of guy with a great smile and with the funds Ron gets has a better chance. Honorable Ron Paul, again give me a break. What a grand illusion.
All I will say is this: you can be certain that this next president will be assassinated.
I am responding to the fellow Paul supporter who called 9-11 Truthers as "cranks." My friend; I have spent 30 years working with the Intel community. 0-11 was an inside job; you need to review some of the websites. The scores of former CIA, NSA and FBI employees stating such is beyong belief.
The cfr agenda folks of the New World Order and One World Government are ready for the Constitution kill over the next 8 years. Just think of all the civil rights we have lost over the last 8 years.
Pray that God saves the Constitution which hangs by a thread, by helping true patriots find the money to come forth and fight at the ballot box for our precious freedoms.
I joined the Constitution Party.
From Politico:
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0208/8655.html
Ralph Nader announced on NBC's "Meet the Press" that he'll run as a third-party, anti-corporate candidate for president this fall, which would be likely to drain votes from the Democratic nominee and provide a huge boon to Republicans.
Democrats say they will work behind the scenes - and use court challenges, if necessary - to try to thwart his access to ballots.
If anyone is surprised a Brand X Party faction would use legal jiggery-poguery to prevent a third-party infidel from running... well, this just isn't America anymore, let's leave it at that.
Not that I agree with Nader, save on one issue: Nader thinks there should be more than two people in the debates. For that, he has one ounce of my personal respect reserves. But just one ounce. That stuff's hard to come by.
