Ron Paul at CPAC
If anyone was wondering what effect Ron Paul's new hires like Doug Bandow or Daniel McCarthy were having on Ron Paul's campaign, it was on display when he addressed CPAC late yesterday, the last candidate to speak to the grand ballroom before it was cleaned up for a banquet. Paul's speech was the most combative I'd ever heard from him, and the message sent out from his campaign was that it wouldn't be the last. He is not stopping his bid to shore up his House seat. He's going to be in this race as long as the money's flowing. At 10 a.m. today he's speaking at Liberty University, meaning he wants protest votes in the fading GOP race when it goes to Virginia on Tuesday.
The key moments in the speech were harsh statements of his foreign policy and attacks on John McCain. That latter stuff was red meat for this conference. After one subdued mention of McCain's pledge to keep troops in Iraq for a hundred years if needed, Paul said "McCain" had a few troublesome friends. "One of his friends is named… Feingold!" Then a blast against campaign finance reform. "Another of his friends is named… Kennedy!" Then, an attack on immigration reform. "Another of his friends, although he's not in the Senate anymore, is Daschle! Tom Daschle. Working with him on raising taxes, not cutting taxes." All of this got the biggest cheers from the most listless, curious section of the crowd. Kids and middle-aged men who'd had their arms folded for most of the speech started smirking and saying "Yeah!" at every McCain hit.
The rest of the speech had its ropey moments, with a lot, lot, lot of talk about monetary policy in the rhythm we all know and love: "And the dollar's going down, and the solution they say is to print more money, but where is the money coming from, it's coming from China," etc. The foreign policy section sounded like an AntiWar.com essay: concise, raw, ending with Paul saying "Osama bin Laden loves our foreign policy!" But that didn't actually draw boos. The only boos came when Paul said: "Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11! There were no weapons of mass destruction!" You could hear a small tide of jeering from the middle of the room, and Paul's supporters had to start yelling their candidate's name to drown them out.
Thanks to the self-selection of the crowd there was less booing than met John McCain, and the emcee closed out for Paul bragging that the Democrats didn't have such a diversity of opinion in their party. Paul milled around for the better part of 15 minutes as volunteers mulled over their chances in the coming primaries and their odds of poaching Mitt Romney support. (One had gotten a call from a Romney organizer who wanted to come to Paul, just to stick it to McCain.) A constellation of libertarian and paleo stars chatted at the back of the room. Steve Gordon asked them what they thought of Mitt Romney's exit and grabbed some quotes for Third Party Watch:
Former Paul National Field Director Dennis Fusaro said, "Good riddance to bad rubbish."
There will be "lots of heartbroken virgins in Salt Lake City," quipped Attention Deficit Democracy author Jim Bovard.
"[Romney's] wife got tired of him writing so many checks," responded former Congressman Bob Barr. He added, "A lack of substance cannot buy credibility."
It's a bit of a change. A month ago, Paul supporters were hoping on a brokered convention. Now the candidate himself joins them in hoping a smaller field will increase his exposure.

Atleast the delusions of grandeur have been damped down.
I interviewed out at a med school in Augusta, Georgia, Super Tuesday. Augusta is a city of about 500,000, two hours from Atlanta. One doesn't get more deep south than Augusta. The presence of Ron Paul supporters was palpable. The streets were lined-- and I mean lined-- with Ron Paul signs. The highway bridges had large banners hanging from them. And a plane was circling the city carrying a giant banner announcing "Ron Paul President" in professional, printed lettering.
I came home from the interview disappointed in the results, but impressed with the motivation and numbers of active Ron Paul supporters in these little "deep" southern towns. I turned to Reason and Lew Rockwell, only to find the rags full of perjoratives about the warmongering, fascist south.
Not being a southerner, but having lived in Atlanta for the last ten years, I must say I have never seen anything like the level of motivation and enthusiasm displayed by the Ron Paul supporters. Ron Paul has lost this election: laugh about that, and scorn the silly newsletters, but a move is afoot unlike any I have seen in my lifetime.
Good. He needs to be combative. He needs to rip into McCain and remind the GOP what conservatism is. If callouts like this ruin the election for McCain, it's worth every penny I've sent. I want Republicans to pay for electing GW Bush and for not electing Ron Paul. I am an ASSHOLE!
I must say the CPAC speech was perhaps the BEST he has given in his entire public career. He absolutely LACED into McCain--Paul was pissed and his delivery was clear and strong--and the Romney supporters ate it up.
I hope to see more of this!
The only boos came when Paul said: "Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11! There were no weapons of mass destruction!"
Nice to see that simply stating facts can get you booed.
Were they saying "Boo," or "Boo-urns?"
I asked my husband last night if he could see himself voting for McCain. He replied, "I'd vote for Mickey Mouse before I'd vote for John McCain!"
He bought me a Ron Paul bumper sticker, the dear 🙂
Ben,
I was saying Boo-urns.
but a move is afoot unlike any I have seen in my lifetime.
I went to a punk rock show last night, and to my surprise it turned out that the band was touring to raise money for Ron Paul. There was a big Love-olution sign behind the stage, and the only intelligible words that the singer belched were "Ron Paul" and "revolution". Make of that what you will.
...Too bad the show blew goats. Lesson: you should probably disband your band when your guitarist dies of AIDS.
After all of this the media will no go about telling the public that there are only 2 Republican candidates left, McCain and Huckabee. Unfortunately we have such an ignorant public that this will be taken as fact and Ron Paul will continue to be ignored. Voters will continue to show up at polling places and be told that Ron Paul has dropped out of the race.
How I wish America were free...
it IS free. you just wish it wasn't dumb.
A vote for McCain is pretty much a vote for Komrad Clinton.Amnesty Juanito McCAIN WILL NOT unify the Republican party. Lets be relaistic...many republicans want an ACTUAL republican in the white house. Paul is the answer, pure and simple.

Seems That more than one conservative is recognizing that Ron Paul has tapped into a general feeling that may over the long term really impact the conservative moement.
With McCains candidacy looking like a death knell for conservatives, here comes Ron Paul with a gorup of adamant, young, technologically aware followers. Those who see it as a footnote in this election are making a foolish observation.
A good analysis of this written by a non-Paul supporter is Doug Wead's blog on the Mouse that roared
http://dougwead.wordpress.com/2008/02/06/the-mouse-that-roared-why-ron-paul-won-the-election/
"[Romney's] wife got tired of him writing so many checks," responded former Congressman Bob Barr. He added, "A lack of substance cannot buy credibility."
Say, there's a voice we haven't heard from in a while. What's Bob Barr up to these days? Still humping for the LP? What is his current position on the WOD
It hadn't occured to me before: Ron Paul is now the only anti-immigration candidate in the race.
(Feel free to add as many qualifiers as you want to that description, you know what I'm talking about.)
I second that if Paul goes on the attack hard against McCain, by donations will have been worth every penny.

The Media anointed candidate, Senator McCain:
* has the most campaign contributions from media (i.e. news) companies and Wall Street bankers
* had to get a loan floated for his 4th quarter (campaign deficit spending).
* grew up with the privilege of an admiral father and grandfather on navy bases.
* graduated 894th out of 899 at the Naval Academy and lost five jets!
* military donors McCain: $79,597; 413 donors, Paul: $286,764; 1349 donors.
* one of the Charles Keating 5; cost the taxpayer $30 billion dollars and the subsequent failure of the savings and loan business.
* co-author of the McCain-Feingold act to "reform" campaign finance, i.e. protect the Media and Military Industrial Complex anointed against challengers.
* wants amnesty for illegal aliens and hires 'Mexico First' people.
* almost became a Democrat when he didn't get the Republican nod in 2000.
* flip flopped and was against military interventionism in 1994 (Haiti) and 1993 (Somalia)
* committed adultery and left his first wife after she was in an auto accident and became disabled.
* current wife the prospective First Lady adultered with him, was addicted to prescription narcotics and stole hard drugs from a medical charity that she ran.
* has no knowledge of economics.
* sings Bomb Bomb Bomb, Bomb Bomb Iran at any public gathering.
From those quotes, it's nice to see some civility from Paul's noteworthy supporters... oh, wait.
In all reality, it sounds more like a case of "with friends like these...", as they seem to be showing the same sort of lack of tact and decorum that people normally despise in McCain. Hard to get anything out of the establishment when you go after them with sharpened sticks.
Combative is what he needs more of. Ron Paul looked the most presidential yesterday and in command of his issues. He stuck it to McCain and he needs to keep doing it. Give 'em hell, Dr. Paul!
McCain's treachery runs deeper than adultery and Congressional scandals:
Google "Vietnam Veterans Against John McCain."
I bet the Clintons will use this to "swiftboat" him if he does too well...
* flip flopped and was against military interventionism in 1994 (Haiti) and 1993 (Somalia)
Well this one gives him points in my book.
Mr.Weigel,
For clarity, you may want to edit this section. I read it three times before I realized the Feingold reference was to CFR and not Iraq.
CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference) is THE annual event attended by the leading conservatives in the US. At CPAC 2008, Senator Juan McWar was booed. At CPAC 2008, Dr. Ron Paul was cheered. You decide.

He absolutely LACED into McCain
Isn't that just adorable!
"Were they saying 'Boo,' or 'Boo-urns?'"
I believe they were actually saying "Boojum!"
You see, if your snark is a boojum . . .
John McCain wasn't even born in the United States. He was born in the Panama Zone when it was under our control.
If only his mom had given birth off the base we wouldn't need to be discussing his run for President.
You guys need to stop wasting your time booing McCain here. You're preaching to the choir. Go tell the idiots everywhere else, though I have yet to find any website that is actually supporting McCain. The most important point is replace McCain with Ron Paul as the GOP Nominee. I hear most other places despising McCain, and saying that they'd rather have Hillary or Obama than him, completely disregarding Paul. Oh, and screw Huckabee and his closed-mindedness, which he has verified:
"Well, let me ask you, are you one of those narrow-minded Baptists who think only Baptists go to heaven?" Huckabee said, "No, ma'am, actually I'm more narrow than that; I don't think all of the Baptists are going to make it."
Are you serious, Bellingham? If only...
hey that was a great list of mccain stuff, dr. ward! you need post that more places.
are there going to be anymore debates before the primaries are over or was the reagan library one the last? now that romney is gone i'd like to see more of mccain fighting with paul (and huckabee) that would be a fun night.
What it really needs to be, t. j., is just RP and McCain, because we've already seen Obama and Clinton steal the democratic debates completely from Edwards. I would hate for it to happen again to Ron Paul.
Bellingham,
Where did you get the idea that children born to two US citzen parents aren't natural born US citizens, regardless of the place of their birth?
Mrs. McCain could have pushed Johnny out in the middle of Red Square, and it wouldn't mean he isn't a natural born citizen.
It already has happened. Fox refusing to allow Ron Paul in the NH debate was a turning point. Not so much because Paul was shut out, but because he couldn't mount a counter event that upstaged the debate. Hey Faux News, how's that "ignore Paul" position working out for you?
JP,
What a piece of trash group that is that you're promoting. Crappy website, crappy everything.
As far as I could be bothered to delve into what they have, it seems that they've just put together all the public information about McCain's service record, cast a negative light on it, then said, "We defy to Sen McCain to deny these facts!"
The swift boat shenanigans were low, but your guys don't even rise to their level of slander.
it IS free. you just wish it wasn't dumb.
Eh, they amount to same thing really...
"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be."
-- Thomas Jefferson
To bad the gop couldn't see Ron Paul for what he is- the most conservative candidate in the running. His broad support is based on the simple idea of freedom- the same idea our country was founded on. Every other candidate just pushes a bigger more repressive government. They can take their REAL ID and their biometrics and stuff it!!
Sorry, dan, the GOP platform has been replaced with support for the war. We'll get back to you at its conclusion.
With Romney out, I expect Republican voter turnout to diminish. I suspect Paul's percentage of votes will rise and get him solidly into double digits. Washington state tomorrow will show if this hypothesis bears out.
Did someone say "swiftboat"?http://www.gopteaparty.com/
If anyone's interested Ron Lawl is holding a pledge drive for Ron Paul at the Ron Paul Survival Report. http://ronpaulsurvivalreport.blogspot.com/
If we can get 300,000 supporters to pledge $100 he will chip in $100, just like Ron Paul promised to do for Rosa Park's congressional medal.
Good, we need more of this. Paul needs to be more aggressive, and not so gentile and matter of fact about his points (Mr. Nice guy worked for a while), but he needs to pick up some energy and be a little more sarcastic, and get under McCain's skin, push his buttons, have fun with it! After all he is the "good guy", the founding fathers would be proud of him!!) This will do a lot for the message!
To bad the gop couldn't see Ron Paul for what he is- the most conservative candidate in the running. His broad support is based on the simple idea of freedom
Well, which is it?
To Scobby: Just search for McCain, citizen and natural born on the internet and you'll find your answer. As for me...all for Ron and Ron for all!
Ronward for liberty!
Well, which is it?
Heh. Damn your depressing snark.
Paul needs to be more aggressive, and not so gentile
I think we can call an R.C.'z Law on that one.
There will be "lots of heartbroken virgins in Salt Lake City," quipped Attention Deficit Democracy author Jim Bovard.
I don't get it. Can somebody explain this?
Good call R C Dean, sorry about the typo there, meant genteel. Damn spellcheck got me again 🙂
R C has a law?
RC, what's your law?
After all of this the media will no go about telling the public that there are only 2 Republican candidates left, McCain and Huckabee.
The local papers are claiming there is only ONE Republican candidate left. They're saying it's all over, without even waiting to see who the Romney supporters will jump to.
Huck would have to win 83% of the remaining delegates, McCain has to win just 40%. Not mathematically eliminated, but stick a fork in this race. It's done.
Hat tip to our good buddy Karl Rove for the numbers. Poached them right off his white board last night on FoxNews.
Cleaner44 wrote, "After all of this the media will no go about telling the public that there are only 2 Republican candidates left, McCain and Huckabee."
That was my expectation, too, but I was pleasantly surprised to turn on my local news and hear them acknowledge the continuation of both the Huckabee AND Paul campaigns, "way behind in the delegate count," of course.
Are there any other debates scheduled? I'm waiting for McCain to do what he did in previous Senate runs: refuse to debate in events that included all candidates. The Libertarian in his last Senate run had some interesting and worthwhile things to say, but Emperor John would not deign to debate the issues with him. Maybe McCain will be "forced" to debate Huckabee, but I think he will do everything he can not to share a stage with Paul anymore.
joe,
I am the law.
it IS free
The only freedom Americans care about is the freedom to suck cock, smoke crack, and pierce the body part of their choice.
I was a Romney supporter. Since Mitt dropped out, I've been forced by my principles to support Dr. Paul 100%. I will not vote for the lesser of two evils.
Mc Cain is a war mongering facist!
crazy to the bone!
The only tragedy here is he didnt get tortured to death and is a politician at all!!
This so not American
This is no Constitution loving individual
This is a power mad man!!
God pitty us all if he ever gets elected!!!
His record is clear
Mc Cain hates freedom!!
RC, what's your law?
No spill blood?

Oh, if only Ron Paul has got the fire in his belly BEFORE last Tuesday!
The only freedom Americans care about is the freedom to suck cock, smoke crack, and pierce the body part of their choice.
If only that were the case. Also, Americans care about being able to call the FCC hotline and complain they saw a bare titty on TV.
When Paul was asked what departments he would eliminate, I was hoping for something on the lines of, 'there is no place for an FCC in a free society.' No such luck, but still, I would have settled for the IRS.
Blonduxo,
Do you believe everything you read on the internet?
It's been the law of the land since 1790 that "the children of citizens of the United States, that may be born beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens."
That's the from the Naturalization Law of 1790, passed March 26, 1790 by the First Congress of the United States.
Not that I'm a fan of McCain, but let's keep arguments against him in the realm of the real. The "lawyers" who dreamed up the possibility of McCain not being a natural born citizen and therefore ineligible to be president probably go on and on about the fringe on a courtroom flag meaning that it's an admiralty court, and other such nonsense.
"""To bad the gop couldn't see Ron Paul for what he is- the most conservative candidate in the running. His broad support is based on the simple idea of freedom- the same idea our country was founded on."""
For the GOP, freedom is pre-9/11 thinking. Then again, I think they have not really been interested in freedom since they coupled themselves with the Christian right. Organized religion does not support freedom.
I do find it funny (and sad) that the most conservative candidate is being ignored by the republicans. I was saying that the GOP was concerned with one issue, immigration. I must be wrong, if it is true they would support the only anti-immigration republican candidate standing.
"""It's been the law of the land since 1790 that "the children of citizens of the United States, that may be born beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens.""""
How do we get Mexico to pass that law for themselves?
Better yet, why don't we do away with law that allows automatic citizenship from kids born in the US from foreign parents.
Make sure to view the above Liberty Univserity intro and speech. It was awesome!
I'm visiting my sis in Virginia and we toured Monticello yesterday. (Poor girl has been there 3 times in the last year.) As we visited Jefferson's gravesite we both wondered aloud about which direction he was turning.
" ~ {McPain's} current wife the prospective First Lady adultered with him, was addicted to prescription narcotics and stole hard drugs from a medical charity that she ran ~ "
Yeah, but can she deepthroat?
BellinghamCoder: Sorry, that's not true. Had he been born on Mars to already-American parents, he's an American by birth. McCain was. American-born that is. And apparently NOT from Mars.
Danny: Yes, all, it's time to get the Republicans to see McCain for what he really is. From the book reviews, even his own biography should turn Americans off him.
RP supporters must, however, do this with the FACTS, not rants, not ad hominem arguments (petty insults on blogs about intelligence or ignorance), and with fewer CAPS!
Otherwise, all: It's time. Get off the web and sign up as a precinct leader, hold neighborhood meetings, whatever it takes.
highnumber,
The swift boat shenanigans were low, but your guys don't even rise to their level of slander.
What "slander" would that be?
The SBVFT made no charges against Kerry that were shown to be untrue.
It never ceases to amaze me how many liberal memes are accepted hook, line, and sinker by a lot of the commenters here.
I agree with 1st & 2nd: that if Paul goes on the attack hard against McCain, by donations will have been worth every penny.
maybe someday we will simply decide to point to the facts:

David, after watching Dr. Paul's speech at CPAC and reading your article, I ran across the results of the Kansas caucuses. Suddenly, the question many must be asking popped into mind: "Why is Paul still in the race?" The answer is obvious, but it suddenly brought to mind an image for a political cartoon I'd like to see:
A vast swarm of lemmings is galloping headlong up a hill leading to a precipice they cannot see. They are led by McLemming and Huck Lemming, etc. Standing in their path is a tall Ron Paul with Constitution in his hip pocket shouting "GO BACK!!!"
This is truly an amazing time in history as I watch how the American people don,t even have a clue of what is going on with the politricks. I am all for Ron Paul but the political system is already being hijacked by the Corporate Elite and World Bankers. This is a show that they put on for us in cooperation with the Media propaganda, when the next President is Already picked for us. Hillary Clinton(Bilderberg meeting). The Elections are already fixed and it doesn't matter who is the President.
The following was published by Jeane Dixon in the 1970's
Dixon also foresaw the advent of the Antichrist and the False Prophet:
"Satan is now coming into the open to seduce the world and we should be prepared for the inevitable events that are to follow. I have seen that the United States is to play a major role in this development... I have seen a 'government within a government' develop in the US within the last few years... I see this 'government within a government' being controlled and financed by a well-oiled political 'machine' of one of our leading political families. With their eye on the White House, I see them discredit any man who occupies it without their approval, no matter how good his political programs may be.
"They will --- through political intimidation, propaganda, and illegal sixth-column activities --- make every effort to show the nation that only their man, the one who heads their 'machine', has the sole right to occupy the White House. Their campaign is going to cause great harm to our nation both here and abroad.
"I 'see' this group succeed in taking over de facto control of the country. They will give rise to an upheaval in our social structure as never before seen. They will bring about increased social unrest and great discontent. Foreign subversive elements will --- as they did in the 1960s --- infiltrate the unruly factions and cause renewed fighting on the nation's campuses and in racial ghettos
"All of the evil in the masses will be swept toward an unknown frenzy by this 'machine'.
"I 'see' a member of this 'machine' ascend to power in New York City, enforcing new laws and regulations that will affect many households of that great metropolis. [Obviously, the Rockefellers are indicated here]
"The social and religious chaos generated by this political machine throughout the United States will prepare the nation for the coming of the prophet of the Antichrist. This political unit of the East will be the tool of the serpent in delivering the masses to him.
"The False Prophet's domain shall be the intellectual seduction of mankind. It means a mixture of political, philosophical, and religious ideology that will throw the populations of the world into a deep crisis of faith in God... One of his first duties and responsibilities in readying the world for the advent of his 'master' is to manipulate the available propaganda machines. With teaching and propaganda the prophet will cause people not merely to accept the Antichrist but rather to desire him with positive enthusiasm to create the conditions of his coming and to participate in organizing the frightful and terrifying despotism of his World Empire.
"[The seemingly miraculous phenomena he will produce] will not be supernatural or preternatural events but rather prodigies of science and human achievements, but interpreted in such a way as to lead men away from God and toward the worship of the Antichrist... The prophet of the Antichrist and the Antichrist himself will be specific and identifiable persons!"
WOW!
Most of the people voting in America are getting their political information from the Mas Media (TV,newspaper) and not the internet. The Media,The World Bankers and the Politicians running this election soap opera scam are under control by the few corporate elite.
The New World Order is in full effect and Americans will not wake up. In the future when we protest, we will be called terrorists and The Patriot Act, The Military Commission Act will be implemented on the North American Union Citizens. I will Vote Ron Paul but The System already chose Hillary Clinton (Bilderberg)
These are the candidates who are CFR members
Democrat CFR Candidates:
Barack Obama
Hillary Clinton
John Edwards
Chris Dodd
Bill Richardson
Republican CFR Candidates:
Mitt Romney
Rudy Giuliani
John McCain
Fred Thompson
Mike Huckabee is being advised by the Director of the CFR according to a recent statement made by him.
The main, root cause, issues of the 2008 that none of the candidates is talking about (except for Ron Paul) are the following:
1) the united states debt of $9.2 Trillion (FIAT EMPIRE Home Page)
2) the unfunded liabilities totaling $60 Trillion (U.S. Government Accountability Office (U.S. GAO))
3) the monetization of debt (that is, making money out of thin air - Freedom Force International - Welcome)
Unless your candidate talks about these root-cause issues, they are just spouting empty rhetoric.
Please research these issues and the CFR, and how the CFR is selling the US out to the international bankers.
DO SOME RESEARCH AMERICA
and stop being led like a lam to the slaughter. There will become a time when there will be an abomination in desolation and there will be nowhere to hide.
I've heard Ron Paul speak many times and this was his best speech and the impact on the crowd of conservatives at CPAC was far more positive than I expected.
Ron Paul spoke at the FreedomFest conference last year and he has been invited again this year to join our 100 plus speakers and 1,000 plus attendees in Las Vegas on July 10 -12. We must do what we can to get the message of liberty, a return to limited constitutional government and free markets out to the American public. See http://www.freedomfest.com
