Merry Christmas To All…
No Christmas--whether very secular or very solemn--is complete without a nod to the (in)famous 1977 Bing Crosby holiday special featuring David Bowie. Their joint rendition of "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" is the stuff of legend and probably did more to close the generation gap than a thousand encounter sessions.
The phony patter ("…I'm sure glad you came by to work on the pianer today…") between Der Bingle and the Androgynous One--then at the height of his Twiggy Stardust look--is priceless and, if I'm remembering correctly from the Gillespie family room, left both my parents and my siblings thinking that the world had indeed gone splendidly mad. Remember folks, this was manna from heaven in the age of Carter, Son of Sam, global cooling, and the inability of the Americans to win the Little League World Series (if foreign teams were allowed to compete). And that's not even dealing with the omnipresent threat of a conversion to the metric system, which frankly seemed more frightening to me as a math-tard than the possibility of a thermonuclear war.
But the real paydirt from the Crosby special, IMO, is Bowie's rendition of "Heroes" ("It's all in the way you say it," muses Bing by way of intro), which makes everyday feel a little more like Christmas and is viewable here by simply clicking on the image.

Not yet it's not.
Grinch,
You didn't actually want to watch it did you?
Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it, secular or not!!
Now viewable!
Yes, Merry Christmas to the denizens of reason! Thanks for the trolls and flamewars and laughs and enlightening conversation as always. And, of course, many thanks to the writers and editors for putting up with our squabbles. 🙂
2008 is looking to be a great year for libertarian issues and free thinkers, and I'm looking forward to the pissing matches we will surely engage in!
Jesus, is that David Bowie or Jamie Lee Curtis?
Anywhooooz .... Merry Christmas to all.
David Bowie has done enough stellar tunes that he can look as androgynous as he wants to. Also, he's been entrepreneurial since he was like. 18. Respect!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you editors, commenters, and lurkers who comprise this, the most sublime location in the blogosphere.
PEACE LOVE LIBERTY
Merry Christmas MP3
I saw this Bing-Bowie thing when it was first broadcast, and have never watched it since, and you will need to put a few more tranquilizer darts into my hide before I will watch it again.
Here are a couple other musical takes on Christmas...

In So Cal hand made tamales are a Christmas tradition and we managed to score a dozen.
Speaking of tamales, here's surreal Christmas Eve tale....
My nephew has been together with Rafael for several years. As near as we can tell Rafael is the only member of his MORMON/Mexican family that's legal. Tonight, they'll join dozens of family members in San Diego for a traditional Mexican Christmas Eve where everyone stays up until midnight (eating tamales, there's the hook) and then opens gifts (Santa doesn't figure in traditional Mexican Christmas, they stay up because the Wise Men arrived bearing gifts in the middle of the night). I guess it's quite interesting trying to keep the kiddies up that late, even with the promise of presents.
I think the boys are a little nervous although they didn't talk much about it. Prolly because neither Mexicans or Mormons are too fond of gays. 🙂
Merry Christmas
...and of course, no Christmas is complete without hearing from these guys...
Allright, since Barton has invoked YouTube I'm invoking the TWC Twelve Days of Christmas Tuneography
Enjoy (or don't). 🙂
I saw that with my parents the first time it aired, and remember my mother telling nice what a nice voice that Bowie boy had. It did make the world seem a whole lot nicer.
Really, Nick, you were more afraid of the metric system than the Russians? That means in your world there was a difference between the two. In Commerce, Texas, circa 1977, the Soviets were going to invade and impose the metric system. You lived among much more rational people.
I'm going to spend the next hour getting my sons dressed for church.
Oh, and since I can't post family pictures yet, here is my Christmas card to all of you. Feliz Navidad!
Pig, Ahhh, Father Xmas. 🙂
Thanks Karen.

Heh. My grandmother and I got into a row over whether Bowie or Crosby was the better singer...
Well, it's NOT Jamie Kelley. 🙂
Urban Myth? Or Truth?
I always heard that Der Bingle and David Blowie never had met each other before this was shot and never saw each other again.
the Soviets were going to invade and impose the metric system
Well both the Godless Commies and their base ten fellow travelers were soundly defeated.
USA ! USA! USA !
Ha! SIV wins the thread!
Pig,
Whole Christmas album available here as a zip file.

On a slightly unrelated note (since Nick has brought up that grotesque Crosby/Bowie sing-along), I just read that Oscar Peterson has left this world. That's one less merry Christmas for millions of fans...
RIP
It still feels like an adjective to me.
@SIV
Whole Christmas album available here as a zip file.
Um, thanks. But that might be a little bit too much of a good thing. 😉
Enjoy a snowball fight.
NORAD tracks Santa
Apparently they've been ordered to track him to make sure he doesn't try entering this country to work without the proper visa.
Thanks Karen, I put up that video and it reminded me of the old days.
My buddy Paige (NOW AN RP SUPPORTER) worked a Christmas Tree lot one year shortly after we graduated high school and was called upon to deliver a Yuletide Tree to Jose Feliciano's home in Villa Park. More than the excitement of meeting a celebrity, Paige was enthralled with both the caliber and the sheer number of instruments casual strewn about Mr Feliciano's home. Don't think he got his autograph. Course Paige was into Tull in those days. Now he's into bagpipes.
Brian, the government tracks everything else we do, no surprise they're tracking Santa.....
Happy Holidays everyone. 🙂
Oh, come on, TWC. Santa's got a damn fine bunch of reindeer who can pull his sleigh nearly at the speed of light! There's no way even the U.S. government can track him.
Oh, wait. Was that a gov. site? Maybe I'm being too naive...
NP: Proof!

TWC,
I stand corrected.
Cara! Merry Merry!
Aw, you guys are all a bunch of sentimental slobs. If I wasn't such a cheap ol' bastard, I'd send each of ya one those free electronic xmas cards that my ISP makes available.
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL !!!
(TWC: Spicy hot tamales and ice cold Shiner's Beer, dude. Nothing better!)
TWC,
The tamales are a tradition in Mrs Number's family, too! (Her g'ma is of Mexican heritage.)
Two years ago, my wife made me some with chicken and shortening instead of pork and lard. Yummy yum yum!
Merry Christmas, all of ya lousy so and so's!
(Waiting for the Boy to wake up right now...)
We managed to score two dozen tamales this year. I can really get into that tradition!
Speaking of being a math-tard, as a product of 1970's elementary school indoctrination, I had to deal with "New Math" and a different method of teaching it EVERY YEAR. needless to say, myself and many of my classmates were bewildered beyond belief and math just didn't make sense. Once we reached high school, one of our teachers cursed the New Math for turning out so many math illiterates or near-illiterates.
I clicked the link expecting a laugh at the weird juxtaposition. I was surprised to find it...well...quite good, actually.
Wine Commonsewer,
Brilliant list! Also, I don't particularly dig Adam Sandler (at least not his flicks), except for "The Wedding Singer" (of course) and I'm not Jewish either. But I love the Chanukah song!
