Free Willie
A Louisiana trooper has busted Willie Nelson for possession of pot and shrooms. According to the AP, Nelson and four others were issued misdemeanor citations and then released. (Which means my headline doesn't really work, but dammit, I'm using it anyway. It was either that or "The Looziana Law Gon' Getcha, Willie," and I think I'll hang onto that reference until the Shreveport fuzz lock up Jerry Reed.)
Elsewhere in Reason: Willie turns up in our pages with surprising regularity.

No one is free when others are oppressed, Jesse.
Damn, I was hoping I got it in quick enough to get credit. You know, that "thanks to frequent contributor jf" type thing.
Thanks for the frequent good comments, jf.

Maybe we should save that Reed reference for the next time someone like Famous Amos goes nuts at Mardi Gras.
As for Willie, he's not under any danger of jail, is he? I've no clue if his past...indiscretions...have left him with any parole or probation time that's unexpired. Anybody know?
Kevin
There's probably a "Whiskey River never mind" joke to be here too. But somebody else is gonna have to step up and do that since I have to go fix dinner for the family right now.
On the weed again, I just can't wait to get on the weed again...
Wow - shrooms. Isn't he a bit old to be trippin'? Hard for me to imagine him doubled up on the floor in laughter while his friends play with sock puppets.
How about this for the headline: "...and the one in the middle looks like Willie Nelson"
Willie Nelson arrested for pot? Here's a headline: Dog Bites Man!
I liked Willie a lot better back in the days when he looked like Bob Newhart.
I'm surprised that a pound and a half of pot is just a misdemeanor in Louisiana.
On the weed again, I just can't wait to get on the weed again...
That reminds me. Have you guys heard about Mel Gibson's Braveheart 2: On the Woad Again?
You should have used, "Living on the road, my friend, was gonna keep you free and clean."
WILLIE NELSON BUSTED FOR POSSESSION
In other news; Tide rises - then recedes.
A pound and a half of weed and he gets off with a fine? Maybe loserana isn't so bad after all.

Thats pretty cool, I don't smoke but a 1 1/2 sounds like a lot of weed. It used to be even better. Only a few years ago you could drive while drinking (not drunk, but drinking) and the drinking age was 18. You can also drink at the zoo, on the street, at the movies, ect. Before the big oil bust in 1980s there were praticaly no taxes on individuals. Of course they caved in to congress on the drinking age. I think the liberatarian streak in LA is a result of the election system. The wide open primares mean people really have a chance to elect middle of the road canidates.
Hey it's only a pound and a half, that's his personal stash.
i can kinda understand why weed is considered a dangerous drug, but not mushrooms. mushrooms have neither caused any violence (which is debatable with pot because contrary to the peaceful stoner when i used to blaze i got energized and often used to break stuff) nor funded any gangs.
Guess Toby Keith wasn't kidding when he said he wasn't gonna smoke weed with Willie no more...a great tune btw.
You guys think times haven't changed? I know a guy who did four years in the Looziana state pen just for being in a car that had that much weed in the trunk some forty years back.
Jesse,
You also coulda gone with:
"Busted flat in Baton Rouge"
Yeah, I know it's not contextually congruous either. But what the heck, it's just the title.
I'm shocked that a redneck cop, no matter how fascist, WOULD BUST WILLIE NELSON!! I'm still trying to figure that out.
I was telling my wife this morning... at least this was just a misdemeanor. A pound and half (christ, that must've been pure skunk... AAAAAARGH!!) would get anyone else a very long haul in the slammer for "intent to distribute". On one hand, I'm very glad that Willie isn't going to spend the rest of his life in ass-pound lockup. But on the other hand, what of all those poor souls who AREN'T Willie Nelson?
If I may, I request that we all take a moment and bow our heads in rememberance of that pound of half of weed and the three ounces of 'shrooms that were lost.
We're talking about Willie Nelson, so we know for sure that it wasn't ditch. No... I can see it now... fat, juicy buds. No stems. No seeds. You can smell it even through the bag. That rich, earthy smell. And it must've been a beautiful shade of green, perhaps with tiny red hairs--
...I can't go on...
I feel safer already.
Well, 1.5 pounds of pot is a misdemeanor if you are white and the cop likes your music. If you are some black kid, charges may be a bit different...
Of course, this having happened in Louisiana (Motto: Vote for the crook, it's important.) there is every chance that pot didn't make it back to the evidence room.
I say leave the man alone. Willie is very special. He has brought joy to millions and his heart is in the right place. He is an incredible, talented, unique individual. He has done a lot of good for humanity. He is a treasure not some creep fighting for crack turf. Smoke and shrooms have been part of Native American ceremony and religion long before Europeans began their ethnic cleansing of that culture. Willie is entitled to pursue the beliefs and practices of his wounded nation. They were here first and their law should be respected. Yes, he broke American laws. The European cleansers had no regard for native laws or people and murdered them by the hundreds of thousands. May the Great Spirit be with you Willie.
