Leading Politico-Economic Indicator Spells Bad News For Republicans In November

For the last ten years, K Street influence peddlers wouldn't buy a Democratic Hill staffer so much as a sandwich much less give them a job after their public service ended. That's changing, and that's a really bad sign for Republicans this November. Yesterday, the Washington Post reported that K Street lobby shops are now courting Democrats:

Washington lobbying firms, trade associations and corporate offices are moving to hire more well-connected Democrats in response to rising prospects that the opposition party will wrest control of at least one chamber of Congress from Republicans in the November elections.

In what lobbyists are calling a harbinger of possible upheaval on Capitol Hill, many who make a living influencing government have gone from mostly shunning Democrats to aggressively recruiting them as lobbyists over the past six months or so.

And there's more bad news for the Republicans. The Post is reporting today that married women are also abandoning the GOP:

Married women with children, the "security moms" whose concerns about terrorism made them an essential part of Republican victories in 2002 and 2004, are taking flight from GOP politicians this year in ways that appear likely to provide a major boost for Democrats in the midterm elections, according to polls and interviews.

I tried this before, but the server macaques must have been on cigareet break.

I find this utterly unsurprising, but noteworthy, nonetheless. If there is a real political futures market, K Street must certainly be it. I like the idea of legislative gridlock, but I fear Democratic control of the House and/ or Senate won't bring it about, in large part because of Republican "achievements" in the past six years. And then we'll see some really dumb legislation come trundling down the pike.
