A Little Ditty About John and Dan
Former Vice-President Dan Quayle - the one who's no Jack Kennedy - made a brief appearence in today's San Jose Mercury News for walking out on a John Mellencamp concert this weekend. The Cougar had dedicated his rendition of Lyle Lovett's "Walking Tall" (a song from the movie Stuart Little) to "everyone hurt by the policies of the current Bush administration."
Oh I'm so lonely
I'm feeling relatively blue
Oh how I'd love a next to kin or two
Mellencamp and Quayle both got their money's worth from their unhappy arrangement: political publicity for Mellencamp, a la the Dixie Chicks, and "VP goes Hollywood" publicity for Quayle, a la Al Gore.

Dixie Chicks link is dead. Bad HTML stuff. Not that I need to read about them. Just need to fell helpful.
If I were a musician I would not want to see Dan Quayle in my audience. This has nothing to do with politics; it's just that nobody has ever thought "Wow, I'm in the same audience as Dan Quayle! Man, you know I'm rockin' now! Gimme a near-beer; I'm gonna party like it's 1959!"
Well, Mellencamp did say the song was for "everyone hurt by the policies of the current Bush administration." Dan Quayle is certainly not among that number, so he was merely following Mellencamp's instructions.
There was a good story on Deadspin last week (clink my name to see it) about Quayle acting like a doofus at a celebrity golf tournament. Am I the only one who looks back at Dan Quayle and thinks, "No, seriously, how the hell did that happen?"
The Political C-list versus the Entertainment C-list.
Next up, it is Pete Wilson taking on Jon Lovitz.
Maybe it is just me, but I'd be more embarrassed being seen walking IN to a Mellencamp concert, than walking out of one.

Point taken. Quayle's presence may actually have UPPED the coolness factor of the audience. Not that I like him or anything, but to give credit where it's due: Dan Quayle does NOT wear a mullet.

Perhaps. Most of us look back and think, "God, were we ever so young and innocent?"
Yeah, I miss the days where the worst thing you could say about the vice president was that he couldn't spell...
And now done "Team America Style"
Oh I'm so ronery
I'm feering lerativery brue
Oh how I'd rove a next to kin or two

Quayle. That's Bush without the steroids, right?
1) TF wrote what I was thinking.
2) Besides Quayle and me, is there anybody else who _hasn't_ been hurt by the policies of the current Bush administration? There must be a few more of us around.

I bet R Dean Taylor never new how close he became to being more than a one hit wonder. If he had just tapped into a slightly different vibe.
"Indiana Wants Me"
(As recorded by R. Dean Taylor)
Mmmm, mmmm
Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there
Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there
I wish I had you, to talk to
If a man ever needed dyin' he did
No one had the right to say what he said about you
And it's so cold and lonely here without you
Out there the laws are coming
I'm scared and so tired of running
Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there
Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there
I wish I had you, to talk to
It hurts to see the man that I've become
And to know I'll never see the morning sunshine on the land
I'll never see your smiling face, or touch your hand
If just once more I could see
You, our home, and our little baby
Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there
Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there, oh
I wish I had you, to talk to
I hope this letter finds its way to you
Forgive me love for the shame I put you through
And all the tears
Hang on love to the memories of those happy years
Red lights are flashin' around me
Yea love it looks like they found me
Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there
Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there
I wish I had you, to talk to
Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there
("This is the police, you are surrounded, give yourself up")
Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there
("This is the police, give yourself up, you are surrounded")
