A Little Ditty About John and Dan

Former Vice-President Dan Quayle - the one who's no Jack Kennedy - made a brief appearence in today's San Jose Mercury News for walking out on a John Mellencamp concert this weekend. The Cougar had dedicated his rendition of Lyle Lovett's "Walking Tall" (a song from the movie Stuart Little) to "everyone hurt by the policies of the current Bush administration."

Mellencamp and Quayle both got their money's worth from their unhappy arrangement: political publicity for Mellencamp, a la the Dixie Chicks, and "VP goes Hollywood" publicity for Quayle, a la Al Gore.

If I were a musician I would not want to see Dan Quayle in my audience. This has nothing to do with politics; it's just that nobody has ever thought "Wow, I'm in the same audience as Dan Quayle! Man, you know I'm rockin' now! Gimme a near-beer; I'm gonna party like it's 1959!"

Well, Mellencamp did say the song was for "everyone hurt by the policies of the current Bush administration." Dan Quayle is certainly not among that number, so he was merely following Mellencamp's instructions.

There was a good story on Deadspin last week (clink my name to see it) about Quayle acting like a doofus at a celebrity golf tournament. Am I the only one who looks back at Dan Quayle and thinks, "No, seriously, how the hell did that happen?"

Point taken. Quayle's presence may actually have UPPED the coolness factor of the audience. Not that I like him or anything, but to give credit where it's due: Dan Quayle does NOT wear a mullet.
