CNN's account. For 2003 nostalgics, prospective nostalgics about the Libby trial, and collectors of Bush administration misdeeds, a great day indeed.

Except that it's pretty clear that there was no violation of the law in naming Plame as the string-puller who got her pissant husband sent to fuck up the Nigerian investigation.

How is it a "great day" when a manufactured partisan scandal takes over the headlines from very real bipartisan scandals?

  2. Bingo Little   19 years ago

How is it a "great day" when a manufactured partisan scandal takes over the headlines from very real bipartisan scandals?

Because obviously a he-said-she-said "scandal" is a hell of a lot more important than things like, oh I don't know, unchecked spending and legislation in a congress that doesn't exactly follow a very strict interpretation of the constitution.

  3. ChicagoTom   19 years ago

Except that it's pretty clear that there was no violation of the law in naming Plame as the string-puller who got her pissant husband sent to fuck up the Nigerian investigation.

By fucking it up, you mean proving the allegations to be false? He was a piss-ant because he has knowledge and working relationships in the region?

He was a good and logical choice to go...I don't see how the fact that his wife mentioned to a superior that he might be a good candidate for the trip somehow inherently makes him tainted? Why exactly?

And it is not within Ms. Plame's authority to maket the decision who would go to Niger. She made a suggestion, and her superiors thought it was a good idea. Maybe you should save your ire for the actual decision makers instead of the employess who are doing their jobs.

This is, and should be news because a policital attack from the office of the President. They (and you) are trying to use innuendo to discredit his reporting. If you want to dispute facts, go ahead, but to pretend like somehow Wilson was inherently tainted because his wife suggeted him as being qualified for the trip (which he was) merely shows your argument to be nothing more than cheap attacks.

  4. Brian24   19 years ago

Shouldn't the story be that the spokesman for the President stated categorically at the time that Rove had nothing to do with the leak, and that has now turned out to be a bald-faced lie?

  5. R C Dean   19 years ago

Rove didn't have anything to do with the leak. The leak occurred before Novak went to Rove, who merely confirmed what had already been leaked. What, you want Rove to lie to the press and deny that Ms. Plame worked for the CIA? Or would you prefer that he simply stonewall the press, when doing so is not required by law?

Mr. Plame was in no way the logical choice for this investigation (unless having a wife who's an analyst is a qualification for investigating black-market uranium sales) and in fact did a pretty crappy job of it.

What he did do there actually supported the administration's case, although he later lied about this.

How is it possible for people who read the same news I do to have the basic facts so catastrophically wrong?

  6. kevrob   19 years ago

The Prince of Darkness' full column on the subject is available.

"How is it possible for people who read the same news I do to have the basic facts so catastrophically wrong?"

YOU DON'T OWN ME, RC DEAN!

I don't think we've ever even met, but I don't think I would like you very much if we did.

  8. joshua corning   19 years ago

so lets be very clear here...Suddam was trying to get yellow cake and we are bitching about novak, rove plame and wilson...jesus christ.

  9. biologist   19 years ago

Clean Hands and Bingo Little: try a little reading comprehension. Brian said its a great day for the specific listed groups of people: 2003 nostalgics, prospective nostalgics about the Libby trial, and collectors of Bush administration misdeeds. He did not state, and we don't know his opinion from this post, that he thinks this makes for a great day. Maybe so, maybe not.

  10. biologist   19 years ago

by the way, the greatness of the day may be disputable; however, the greatness of the post title is indisputable

  11. Clean Hands   19 years ago

Gee, biologist, I don't recall going after Brian -- I was being critical of those he named; I think that their priorities are pretty screwed-up. How's that for reading comprehension, eh?

  12. Billy Ray   19 years ago

"How is it possible for people who read the same news I do to have the basic facts so catastrophically wrong?"

I wondered about that too, until I realized they were reading the "Huffington Post" and not the "Washington Post", or watching "Countdown with Queef Olbermann" instead of "The News Hour w/Jim (growing ever more partisan by the day) Lehrer" (I can't wait until Ray takes the helm of the News Hour, he's great!).

  13. M. Simon   19 years ago

    Chicago Tom,

Wilson was a pissant because he gave one story to the CIA and another to his favorite newspapers.

Why do you think Kerry dropped Niger Joe from his campaign so abruptly?

  14. M. Simon   19 years ago

Actually Rove fingered Wilson. via "Who is Who".

R.C. as to getting the facts wrong - I think what we have here is proof positive that belief is stronger than reason.

  15. Jon H   19 years ago

    M. Simon writes: "Actually Rove fingered Wilson. via "Who is Who"."

Er, that didn't say his wife worked at CIA. If I read in Who's Who the name of a person's spouse, I don't assume the person works in the CIA.

I hope he used a glove or at least washed his hands afterwards.

  17. biologist   19 years ago

Clean Hands: my reading comprehension is fine, your writing sucks, though
