House Republicans were supposed to vote today on their watered down lobbying reform legislation, but it seems that they can't even muster the votes to pass that.

[Rules Committee Chairman] Rep. David Dreier (R-CA) has just pulled the resolution from consideration, and the House has gone into recess.

If you're holding out hope that the Senate can come up with something better, let Kerry Howley disabuse you of that notion.

I thought that we were of the opinion that Congress being unable to pass laws was a good thing.

The problem is big government breeds corruption. A government that has the reach this one does will naturally have people lining up to curry favors from those who control the levers of power. We don't need more laws we need less government.

Liberty, what breeds corruption is not so much the size of the state, a silly and subjective concept, but the balance of powers within and without it. What we see today are the effects of a one party state.

I agree however, I do wonder how there could ever be any, say, drug law reform without Congress being able to pass laws or repeal old ones. Just keep their hand tied so they can't screw things up even more I guess.

I believe what Liberty4all was referring to when he said "size of government", was its scope/reach/amount of power. Not its literal size.

I don't know if this can all be blamed on Delay's absence. An equally likely explanation is that Delay's absence and the inability of the Republicans to pass legislation are the both the result of the scandals that have wreaked so much damage on the party, legally and politically.
