I'm a Foot Soldier?
So, apparently I'm name checked in an exceedingly silly New York Observer story about "the way that the conservative media machine enlists its young foot soldiers and transforms them into wonder-boy pundits." (Since I turned 27 a few weeks ago, I'd have thought I was safely out of wünderkind territory and well on my way to curmudgeon.) The prime example of this vaguely conspiratorial sounding process is Matt Continetti from The Weekly Standard, who interned at National Review while he was at Columbia, then got a fellowship his first year at the Standard, where his editor helped him get a book contract. The only remotely "machine" sounding part of this is that he got some help at various points from the Collegiate Network (libertarians have the Institute for Humane Studies). Beyond that, the glimpse we get into the secret inner workings of this conservative media cabal consists of the shocking revalation that a right-leaning young journalist would intern at one conservative mag, then get a job at another, and that his editor would help him do a book. Fiendishly clever. Can I get my decoder ring now?
The weirdest thing about the article is that it suggests this is something the right is especially skilled at. We're told:
THERE'S A PERCEPTION IN SOME CIRCLES that the right is much better at reaching out to young people and drawing them into the fold: A progressive-minded college student is lucky to find a job licking envelopes for Greenpeace, but a conservative one might be given his own talk show.
Well, that's an interesting report about what "some circles" perceive, but I'm curious what reason there is to think it's true. The right has IHS and Collegiate Network. The left has Campus Progress. The Observer mentions a handful of 20-something dudes working at right-ish magazines. Do I really need to go through a tedious list of liberal 20-somethings I know in D.C. who are in exactly the same position? As Ross Douthat notes, it's not exactly tough to think of liberal publications where our counterparts cut their teeth and go on to further pundity pursuits. Especially odd, as Ross points out, is that of the five people specifically named, it's really only Ben Domenech who could pass as a "movement conservative." I'll be offered a gig at the Standard exactly one week after Satan opens a ski resort, and Matt's book, which is about GOP corruption, doesn't exactly strike me as Republican cheerleading. Still, it might be fun to put "right-wing foot soldier / wonder boy pundit" on my business card.

Well, you cant spell liberal without conspirocy..., I mean crisis..., what the hell, I can't spell anyway.
The left are the good guys, and the right is evil, what else do you need to know, Julian?
Julian,
You goose-stepping bastard! 🙂 I had no idea that you were a conservative wonderboy pundit. Maybe there's a some subtle hints in your pro-gay adoption articles.
I am as puzzled as ever as to why libertarianism is so commonly associated with "the right" (e.g., "The right has IHS . . ."). The right has always seemed as hostile to liberties as the left to me. But that goes back to my old hobbyhorse that "right" and "left" is an intellectually impoverished way of looking at political issues.

Now we have to add "w?nderkind" to the list on that "Which superhero are you?" quiz.
THERE'S A PERCEPTION IN SOME CIRCLES ... but a conservative one might be given...
Passive phrasing = BULLSHIT ALERT! The also-passive "might (or might not) be given" is just icing on the cake.
No reason at all the read any further.
"right-wing foot soldier"
I sort of had you pegged as more of a bleeding heart liberal.
Brian24,
It's history. Libertarianism as we know it today began as an anti-left, anti-New Deal, anti-liberal movement in the mid-20th Century. While the Democratic Party was the big boy on the block, and all other international affairs issues were subsumed to the Cold :War, lots of seemingly-incogruous movements (right isolationism, libertarianism, business Republicanism, neo-Confederatism, the religous right) made up the right-opposition. It's only with the end of the Cold War and the Southern Strategy realignment that created the current conservative majority that the distinctions between these groups have become more important than the anti-leftism that was each of the central tenet of each ideology (though in different ways).
By "anti-liberal," I am, of course, using the term liberal in its modern sense.
Fuck the left and the right. They're both the enemy of freedom. They sound so much alike, I can't tell them apart half the time.
If anyone is interested in learning about the existence of a leftish faction in the Nazi Party and its elimination, alluded to by the Smoking Penguin above, William Shirer's "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" is a really good source.
As a Wonder-boy Pundit, do you get a cool outfit with a cape? Can we see pictures?
We're not so much foot soldiers as running dogs.

Ah. Nothing quite like leftists gazing at modern politics through a crystal that's about three decades out of date.
Why do I have this mental image of Dr. Evil doing the Macarena...
Libertarianism as we know it today began as an anti-left, anti-New Deal, anti-liberal movement in the mid-20th Century.
Yet conservatism began as an anti-libertarian response to protect monarchy, militarist empire and cheap nationalism.
Sounds quite a lot like the "if you're not with us, you're against us" worldview, doesn't it Joe?

Enough about that. Let's talk about the lack of young conservative wonder-girls.
Actually, I'm a little surprised that the article didn't think to harangue us on that point.

Most people would have drawn certain conclusions about my intent from the phrases "It's history," "mid-20th century" and "the end of the Cold War," but not our mediageek. Imagine that, when describing historic events from decades ago, I describe how conditions were decades ago. Silly me.
metalgrid,
I don't get how your statement about conservatism is relevant, but yes, the banding together of divergent "right" movements was indeed an enemy of my enemy phenomenon. As I mentioned before.
Thanks Joe, I guess that makes sense in some ways. Personally, I have always voted Democrat in my lesser-of-two-evils calculation, largely because during my formative political years in the '80s I found the military-worshipping, morality-legislating ways of the extremist "right" quite scary, while I found the lingering communistic opinions of the extremist "left" more silly and buffoonish.
Joe and SmokingPenguin's posts just point up again how silly the left-right debate is though. Any serious political movement is always made up of many different ideas and groups, some of which are generally incongruous. If religion is right and secularism is left, what are religious liberals? I just think the right-left paradigm obscures more than it enlightens.
I think that Joe's explanation fits well.
"Ah. Nothing quite like leftists gazing at modern politics through a crystal that's about three decades out of date."
...and making it quite clear that the origins of these movements and their subsequent trajectory might be the key to answering the initial question posed by Brian24 at 11:54. Yes Joe, silly you. You brought up history, which by definition is out of date.
I second Kwais' remark.
"Most people would have drawn certain conclusions about my intent from the phrases "It's history," "mid-20th century" and "the end of the Cold War," but not our mediageek. Imagine that, when describing historic events from decades ago, I describe how conditions were decades ago. Silly me."
Joe, believe it or not, I wasn't taking a dig at you. I was taking a dig at Kolhatkar and other leftists who are incapable of distinguishing the epic number of differences between modern Republicans and modern libertarians.
Geeze.

No Capes. Capes are out this year. No Capes.
What worries me the most in this regard is how little either lefties or conservatives (however one defines the term) talk about libertarians or libertarianism. In the larger American political arena, we might as well not exist.
They talk about us?
"What worries me the most in this regard is how little either lefties or conservatives (however one defines the term) talk about libertarians or libertarianism. In the larger American political arena, we might as well not exist."
That's funny; my sense is that (at least among journos and policy types) we're discussed and have a public profile far out of proportion to our actual numbers.
I always figured that the reason young people have more job opportunities as professional right-wingers than as professional left-wingers is because they are more rare there--young left-wingers are a dime a dozen. Same way a black Republican would probably find more political job offers than a black Democrat.

I guess I really meant discussion by and among politicians. Journos and policy types don't make it more than a few miles outside the Beltway.
It's a good question how many small-l's there actually are, since I get the impression many whose beliefs contain a strong dose of libertarian philosophy self-identify with one of the major parties and don't think of themselves as libertarian.
Certainly the stalwarts of both major parties are drifting away from libertarian ideas at an alarming rate. This should open up things for us to enter the discussion in a major way, but it ain't happening.

also, look for Mr. Long's "They Saw it Coming: The 19th-Century Libertarian Critique of Fascism"
they are more rare there--young left-wingers are a dime a dozen. Same way a black Republican would probably find more political job offers than a black Democrat.
Yep. Same basic thing as with Ted Nugent ("hey, look at me! I'm a conservative. With long hair! Weren't expecting THAT, were ya! Huh? Huh!")
Or like David Horowitz ("I used to be a LIBERAL.. so I can give ya all the inside poop about how they opeate, cuz I used to be one!") and the 3-4 other doofy ex-liberals now claiming they've switched teams. Like it gives them greater moral authority that they came to it honestly, as grownups, after some prolonged period of analysis, instead of just being brainwashed into it like the other dopes.
The other unstated premise is this: there are plenty of credentialied conservatives out there. They tend to be experts on economics, or foreign policy (generalizing, i know).
But what the poor cousins of the Right are dying for is ANYTHING resembling anybody with even a hair of real edumucation to support THEIR views; the ones about racism, xenophobia, gay-hating, creationism, heliocentrism, flat-earth-ism, etc. etc. etc. Usually all they get for support are these borderline Koresh types with mail order PhD's who preach to 12-person congregations in trailer parks in rural Kansas. So when they find a person with an actual Bachelor's degree from a college with honest to goodness accreditation, who agrees with anything they say, they trip all over themselves to get that person signed on to some kind of high visibility writing gig.
No one wants a patchouli-wearing unwashed hippie on their TV show. It brings down the ratings, unless they take their clothes off and dance for the solstice.
The "hot librarian" (libertarian?) look, on the other hand, well...
"I was taking a dig at Kolhatkar and other leftists who are incapable of distinguishing the epic number of differences between modern Republicans and modern libertarians."
1. You want to be able to do drugs.
2. But you voted for me anyways!
3. The end!
Muhahahahahaha!
Now, please, I would have utterly ignored libertarians voting for me as well, but I would have done it better.
