Contributing Editor, Institutional InvestorFrom embryonic stem cell research to the fate of Terry Schiavo, science has given us a whole new set of political issues. Politicians are now compelled to have a position on everything from performance enhancing drugs in sports to global warming. In taking these positions, are politicians listening to the scientific community or are they responding to the interest groups essential to their election? Do politicians strike the right balance between the desire for progress and ethical implications of that progress? What role should elected officials and government play in encouraging desirable scientific research? Does science education accurately reflect the scientific consensus? Is science too important to be left to the scientists?

Are y'all ever going to do an NYC event that starts late enough for me to make it from work? Say 730 or 8?
Hey Ron,
I hope you are familiar with Chris Mooney. I saw him on CSPAN over new years. It's true, the Republicans are science douche-bags, but the Dems/left/Chris are every bit as big the asshats in their own way. Come prepared and rip him a new one.
As for Mr. Smith (Warning Warning Danger Will Robinson) I've yet had the misfortune, but somehow I expect he will be just as bad.
After hearing Tom Cruise go off on Adderall, I am for the first time on the doctor's side.
Tom Cruise as your psychopharmacologist is like Hello Kitty as your Superbowl coach.
And speaking of Ron Bailey and science and stuff, when is Liberation Biology coming out in paperback?

Great analogy! Let me add, like Bobby Knight being your grief counselor.
Wow, someone from the Discovery Institute appearing in a debate with Bailey AND Mooney?
Please tell me somone is going to record/broadcast this.
I'm looking forward to the Colts doing really well and playing very nice in the playoffs.
Coach Hello Kitty
I sure hope someone beats the Broncos so that we have a chance to go to the Super Bowl. The other coaches, players, and myself want so very much to watch the big half-time show in person. There's nothing like it in Indianapolis. Just the thought of the Super Bowl half-time show makes this pussy hot.
Coach Hello Kitty
Ok, nufa that. This looks like it's gonna be great! I have confidence that Ron will represent the science sans government intervention position in stellar fashion. Seriously, is it going to be recorded/broadcast? Cuz if not, I might zip out and catch it.
Finally an NYC event I can attend! Sounds like a good discussion.
Perhaps it's gonna be transcribed and printed here? I wanna read how Ron eats the other folks alive.:)
"The Republican War on Science" would be an ideal topic for Reason's Science Correspondant to flog.
Were it not for the inconvenient fact that Global Warming is a main battlefield in that war.
For those of us who are not local DC and cannot make the trip, does anyone know if the discussion will be taped and shown somehwere like CSPAN? I have also heard Mooney speak and have been shocked at the talking pointers who get put up as opposition. I look forward to Ronald Baileys articulate thoughts.
joe,
It seems that global warming is an area where the GOP position tends to be consistent with the scientific evidence, while the GW activists who insist on anthropogenic causes often twist and cherry pick the scientific data.
BTW, most Republicans are more anti the GW activists' agenda than Bush who has made pronouncements that go further in the activist's direction than is warranted by the scientific evidence.
