Gillespie on C-SPAN's 25th Anniversary (Oct. 8 Edition)

|

A week ago last Saturday, I had the distinct honor of appearing on C-SPAN's marathon celebration of its 25th anniversary. Go here for a rundown of other guests.

And go here to hear/see me talk about Phil Donahue's gams, compare William F. Buckley to Phil Rizzuto, and proclaim that my favorite branch of the Kennedy clan are the Dead Kennedys. (Requires RealPlayer. Free download here.)

My favorite email from the appearance:

Mr. Gillespie:

You have the distinction of being the only individual to appear on the C-SPAN call-in anniversary program who looked like he was preparing to wash his car rather than to come before tens of thousands of individuals on an important program. How can someone as intelligent and accomplished as you have no sense of decorum or respect for the audience?

  1. Nick,
I saw your appearance. You did great, but I remember thinking exactly the same think as your email friend.

  2. I didn’t see the program, but the comment makes no sense. You wouldn’t wash your car in a leather jacket, would you?

  3. Clearly, not a Reason reader, that guy.

  4. Because he’s a rebel man, a rebel!

  5. Well, FWIW, as someone who has no sense of decorum and couldn’t care less about C-Span’s audience, I thought you looked just fine Nick.

  6. I hate the Realplayer folk and I refuse to install their software on my system.

  7. Maybe because his points were more important than his fashion. But maybe I’m blinded by my admiration for the man. And his leather jacket.

  8. I hate the Realplayer folk and I refuse to install their software on my system.

    Agreed.

  9. What, no pic?

  10. It’s amazing how many different conspiracy theories get aired in one hour of C-SPAN call-ins.

  11. By the way, is it just me or did that one accented left-wing guy from Texas call in twice?

  12. “The Al-Queda of news magazines.” That’s a new one to me. Nice program, by the way.

  13. “The Al-Queda of news magazines.”

I was gonna comment on that too! …Ha!

  14. I hate the Realplayer folk and I refuse to install their software on my system.

I was going to say you may miss an 1/8 of what you wanna see or so, but I don’t have a leg to stand on there. …I refuse to watch Star Trek reruns until they put Farscape back on the air. …with the original cast.

  15. I didn’t see the program, but the comment makes no sense. You wouldn’t wash your car in a leather jacket, would you?

It was Gillespie sans leather jacket this time, but the “Man in Black” theme was in full effect.

  16. The Man In Black would NEVER wash his car in the leather jacket. It’s just not done. Email Guy was obviously raised by wolves.

  17. This is not a good sign. It means Nick is starting to wear his leather under his clothes.

  18. Uncle Sam: “I hate the Realplayer folk and I refuse to install their software on my system.”

Try “Real Alternative” and optionally the “Tara” (RA/RM) plugin for WinAmp.

Optionally, set-up your browser so it doesn’t automatically play RM/RA files (or .ram and .smil files), then,

since “They” usually hide the file’s real address in a .ram or .smil file (small text files), look at that file and give the address (“rtsp://”, etc.) to “Net Transport” to DL and save, then use “dbPowerAmp+plugin” to convert it to something useful. Google is your friend.

  19. I’m pretty sure that was the same shirt he’s worn to every c-span appearance. It might be the only one he owns.

  20. There is something very impressive about the size/shape and color of your hair.

  21. Yeah, it was great to hear Nick utter the phrase “epistemological conundrum” twice in one hour.

  22. The more Dead Kennedys, the better.

    Stellar job, Nick. Superb speaking.

As for the shirt, that’s secondary. Wear no shirt at all next time, and that would be fine.

  23. the funny thing is that i can run the feed on my linux computer but my newer windows computer at work doesn’t run it…oh wait this isn’t slashdot…what the hell am i talking about

  24. Nick, it’s better when you don’t wear the jacket because this way we can enjoy your lovely arms. We don’t generally get much enjoyment out of either editors or their arms, but you are our greatest hope since Hunter Thompson stopped wearing shorts and knee-socks.

    Love ya–
