Stormy Lunacy
The bozos at "Repent America" are awful, but they only scratch the surface of post-Katrina kookiness. A group called Columbia Christians for Life has circulated an e-mail arguing that the "Hurricane Katrina satellite image looks like a 6-week fetus" and noting that half of Louisiana's abortion clinics are in New Orleans. Obviously, they conclude, God wants us to repent. (Would that make God a clinic bomber?) Amanda Marcotte comments: "Sometimes I think the problem is that huge numbers of people really shouldn't have taken LSD and watched 2001: A Space Odyssey."
On the other end of the spectrum, the Rev. Lewis E. Logan II, a black pastor in Los Angeles, has declared that "it is no a coincidence that it is exactly 50 years from the time of [Emmett Till's] lynching and murder. That it is not a coincidence that the storm's name is a sister. Katrina. For she represents the collective cries of mothers who have lost their sons to the brutality and the murderous grip of this racist white supremacist American culture." Sister Katrina must have been inspired by Saturn devouring his children, since the devastated city was about 70% black.

Well, thanks mondo heaps, Columbia Christians for Life, for setting the abortion-abolitionist movement back another 50 years. If you guys had run the anti-slavery movement, Traci Bingham would be driving me to work every day.
PS: I think someone should start a counter-group to Repent America called Readpenthouse America.
thanks a lot RFJ jr.
One of the weirdest things about mediaphillic disasters is watching the leeches squirm out to attach themselves to it in order to promote their own particular agenda. It doesn't matter what the event is, the politically obsessed will see it as somehow connected to their pet causes.
I have become more and more convinced that politics is far less about pragmatically solving problems and is instead driven by the desire of numerous individuals for attention and status.
Estimated time before Shannon reaches conclusion that hurricanes wouldn't be nearly so devastating if the media didn't give them free publicity: six hours.
I wonder how many idiots just nod along in agreement with the things these people say? Although, if I think too much about it, I get scared.
For those interested in a unique perspective on this whole disaster, I came across this guy's blog yesterday by way of a post on the LRC.com blog:

Just thought I'd pass it along. It's a very interesting read, and in most every way better than the MSM coverage of the catastrophe.
Evolution is not always pretty, David. No, it's a slow and painful process at times. People like that clearly illustrate why humans are probably not the pinnacle of evolution, if one is searching for a rational endpoint.
Everyone has an agenda. Unfortunately, truth is rarely a part of the said agenda.
Smacky,
Maybe they were just poorly designed:). I looked through the Repent America site. It seems that they travel the country to try to incite riots at gay events, then whine about the persecution of Christians when they get arrested. A pitiful bunch.
It's about time, Californicate is next. Wait. Oh yeah...
I suppose that the guy with the Cane & the Sheep (and the big G on his pocket) will eventually get around to smiting those got dam Dykes on Bikes. Just hope he's a little more precise about it than HE was in Nu Awlins.
I swear to God (pun intended).....where do they find these people. And my kids wonder why we don't attend church.
Hate to be obvious here, but has anybody confirmed the whereabouts of Katrina and the Waves?
Jeff P.
Last I heard, they were going down to Liverpool to do nothing all the days of their lives.
I was waiting for a "the good news the MSM isn't telling you about Katrina" joke. Well done.
i think the hurricane looked more like a circular saw blade; acted more like one too. But fetuses have been known to wreck a few lives now and then too.
The Bangles did it better.....
"Hurricane Katrina satellite image looks like a 6-week fetus"
Holy crap, they're right! It does look like an undifferentiated blob!
Katrina landed in the States a few days back, and brought the Waves with her: Haven't you seen the pictures of New Orleans? Prior to that, they were touring the North Atlantic but cancelled the Florida stop.
Also, if we're going to engage in lunatic mystical interpretations of the weather: anyone think this is a clear sign that Bush has lost the Mandate of Heaven?
Every state that got hit voted for Bush. Twice. Coincidence? 😉

Ha!
Well said.
People like that clearly illustrate why humans are probably not the pinnacle of evolution, if one is searching for a rational endpoint.
Well, the only endpoints to evolution are extinctions. 🙂
The Digital Warfighter blog does bring up an interesting question: How much money is made by people providing "solutions" to "problems" that are largely a fabrication of the media. I'm reminded of the "Black Hawk Down" incident in Somalia. Not that the starvation and oppression there wasn't real, but that it had been going on for decades until Newsweek had a slow newsweek and made a big deal out of it. The next thing ya know....
All of America will throw itself into helping the victims of Katrina, potentially to a far greater amount than is needed, with all the corrisponding waste.
For the good news the MSM isn't telling you about Katrina, go here.
I think you missed the point of digitalwarfighter's posting. When he says it's not so bad, he is being sarcastic; he's mocking the spin-doctoring of the Rumsfeld gang.
By the way (and this is not a joke)...as if we didn't have enough bad news, Fats Domino is missing...
God apparently doesn't like black pianists who write songs made popular by Pat Boone.
Lunacy from Christians on the Left and the Right. La,la, la I'm an atheist now, la, la, la. Actually maybe I'll convert to something fuzzy with UFOs, like Eckanakar or Urantia.
Every state that got hit voted for Bush. Twice. Coincidence?
joe - Are you suggesting all states that voted for Bush twice are going to have something bad happen? I better leave Virginia now...

What on Earth made you think I missed the point?
...or was that directed at wsdave?
Perhaps I missed the sarcasm, but I still stand by my point. I "lived" through the Mount Saint Helens eruption in the 80's and it was nowhere near as bad as it was made out to be. I was also in Seattle for "the big one" earthquake about 5 years back, and I remember seeing pictures and video of a hugh crack down the middle of the street on almost every news service. It turns out (and I saw it personally, since I lived there) that the crack was about 2.5 inches wide, but by sticking the camera really close, they could make a non-event seem important.
News services are DYING for news, so everything gets blown out of proportion. Just ask Natalie Holloway. A missing person in another country (not like that EVER happens), that the news won't let go because there is no news to replace it, and they have to report SOMETHING, or it's just dead air.
Hate to be obvious here, but has anybody confirmed the whereabouts of Katrina and the Waves?
LOL (with proper wryness). I was congratulating myself for my self-restraint in not posting the lyrics "The roof is leaking and the wind is howling"* on the thread where "Phil Collins" is holding forth.
*From Phil's "Face Value" album.
These sort of moronic statements by religious freaks, etc. anger me to no end. What a bunch of useless fucks.
BTW, I found out that my parents survived the hurricane.
BTW, I found out that my parents survived the hurricane.
That is good news. I was wondering if anyone had a personal stake there.
Smacky, evolution is rational, but it's not teleological. It has no end point and will continue in an unpredictable fashion until life on the planet ends.

One of our local radio talk hosts spoke at length today about relief efforts, using Randy Newman's poignant Louisiana 1927
as a bumper. Great piece of music, and I was impressed that the guy even knew of it.
Yeah, I've been singing that one off and on all day. Dad plays it on piano a lot...kind of depressing to think that the piano is probably under water now.
Update: Some good news, finally: They found Fats Domino, and he's OK.
(Again, this is not a joke)
