Fin Fan Fight
I'm not taking sides in the controversy over shark fin soup at Hong Kong Disneyland, but I will say this: It's refreshing to see Disney critics accused of "cultural imperialism."

Jacob, your Kirby monster reference does not go unnoticed.
Shark fin soup is distasteful, disrespectful, wasteful and just plain wrong. So is Disneyland. Why is this news?

"Shark fin soup is distasteful, disrespectful, wasteful and just plain wrong. So is Disneyland."
What's distasteful, disrespectful, wasteful, and wrong about either of those?
Please, sir - can I have more of the distasteful, disrespectful, wasteful and just plain wrong soup?
I found shark fin soup to be quite good. The shark fin itself doesn't really add much flavor, as I recall - its there more for texture and thickening.
I think its "wasteful" because the rest of the shark is generally not eaten (by us, anyway). I think shark fin soup is (or used to be) kind of a conspicuous consumption/status item.
Not that there's anything wrong with that!
What do the British do with the rest of the ox when they whip up a batch of oxtail soup?
I suppose they give the now-tailess and pissed-off oxen a wide berth.
This reminds me of a Bernie Wrightson horror story from about 30 years ago. A fellow has a taste for frogs legs. Somehow he crosses a line and the now-legless frogs come wheeling in on tiny little frog dollies to have their revenge: man leg soup (or some other recipe). The last panel has the man wheeling around on his dolly.
It may sound ridiculous now, but to 10-year-old me, it made an impression. Anyway, it's less ridiculous than the Roddy Piper movie "Hell Comes to Frogtown".
"Hell Comes to Frogtown." Great film. Except for the exploding chastity codpiece. That freaked me out.
R.C.- it is quite good indeed. Are you sure they don't eat the rest of the shark? Why would they catch whole new sharks to make shark steaks? Maybe different type of shark?

Especially wasteful because shark steaks are delicious with a little lemon juice. Although they became difficult to find because of mercury concerns.
I've read that in some cases, fisherman catch the shark, slice off the fin used for the soup, and then dump the still-living (but wounded and swimming-impaired) shark into the water). Now that strikes me as wasteful and cruel.
Of course, the core of the problem is that sharks swimming around in the ocean are an unowned resource ...
PS: I've seen "Hell Comes to Frogtown" more than once.
By "water" above, I meant they dump the crippled shark back into the ocean. Not that they dumped the whole thing into the soup.

Ooooh! I'm famished! Maybe a little plum and chilli pepper marinade... OOOhhhh!
I marinade my shark steaks in lime juice and oriental chili sauce. Then I broil them and serve with spinach and couscous.
It is truly a feast for the gods!
Shark can be a little tough and stringy, but the flavor is great. A marinade is a must.
