Via Radley Balko we get a link to a report on Senate hearings organized by Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) to give a forum to anti-porn crusaders. The hysterical headline: "Addiction to porn destroying lives, Senate told."

  1. Lane   20 years ago

    Mmm, Aurora Snow...

  2. Rick Barton   20 years ago

    Your tax dollars at work.

  3. Mark Borok   20 years ago

Screw pornography. When is congress going to do something about my addiction to political weblogs?

  4. David   20 years ago

Yes, with the country at war, Iran developing nuclear weapons, our borders as porous as a sieve, and innumerable other problems, it is good to know that Congress has plenty of time to waste holding hearings on the dangers of porn. Since addiction to porn is supposedly "destroying lives," I wonder how long it will be before trial lawyers start suing porn companies for massive sums. Hmm, I don't remember any warning labels about addiction on those porn sites I visited earlier. I think I've got a case!

  5. raymond   20 years ago

Some of his middle-age male friends limit their time alone in hotel rooms to avoid the temptation of graphic pay-per-view movies, Brownback said.

I can't contain my glee at that statement. It's a seed-crystal for satire.

But [James B. Weaver, a Virginia Tech professor who studies the impact of pornography] pointed to studies that show prolonged use of pornography leads to "sexual callousness, the erosion of family values and diminished sexual satisfaction."

And hairy palms. And blindness. And...

    I keep laughing. Sorry.

  6. Morat   20 years ago

I wouldn't laugh. These idiots have a mandate, remember?

It's amazing how the party of "small government" doesn't feel like small government when it comes to other people's dicks, doesn't it?

  7. King Dong   20 years ago

"It's amazing how the party of "small government" doesn't feel like small government when it comes to other people's dicks, doesn't it?"

Hold it there, Morat, did you accidentally answer your own question?

  8. Jason Bourne   20 years ago

Hmm, time to order some more porn so I can continue to destroy my life. 🙂

You just got to love that Senator's name - "Brownback." 🙂

  9. Mo   20 years ago

I wonder how much SprectaVision tax payers are paying for for our Reps and Senators.

Things that make you go ... hmmmm.

  10. Jason Bourne   20 years ago

But he acknowledged the First Amendment right to free speech has limited congressional efforts.

And it pisses him off I guess. Damn First Amendment. 🙂

Weaver acknowledged that research "directly assessing the impact of pornography addiction on families and communities is rather limited."

But they'd like to enforce their agenda anyway. Why does this sound strikingly familiar to the anti-GMO crowd's logic?

But he pointed to studies that show prolonged use of pornography leads to "sexual callousness, the erosion of family values and diminished sexual satisfaction."

Ahh, he just said that they don't have much in the way of research, but now he's making definitive claims?

Judith Reisman, a vocal critic of the Kinsey Institute and the field of sexology, suggested Congress require police officers to gather evidence of pornography at crime scenes to further research.

Which would have, of course, no scientific value at all; talk about poor randomization. 🙂

  11. Lowdog   20 years ago

Hell, the more sex I get, the more I want to watch porn and vice-versa. And you better believe that includes more, ahem, satisfaction. 🙂

  12. Jason Bourne   20 years ago

    Lowdog,

No! We must throw you jail, otherwise you will destroy your life! 🙂

  13. Lowdog   20 years ago

But isn't it my choice if I want to destroy my life or not? Oh wait, we live in the good ol' puritanical US of A.

But to answer Julian's original question - Aurora Snow is destroying my life by not coming over to my house in some sexy lingerie and, well, you know. 😉

  14. Ruthless   20 years ago

Paging Natalie "under my skin" in the blog ad at the right.

  15. deron   20 years ago

Is Aurora Snow Destroying Your Life?

Well she wasn't until a few minutes ago.

  16. deron   20 years ago

All better, she means nothing to me now.

  17. King Dong   20 years ago

    Two minutes???!!!

  18. Stevo Darkly   20 years ago

But he pointed to studies that show prolonged use of pornography leads to "sexual callousness,

I've experienced chafing and raw skin, but I haven't actually built up any callouses ... oh.

  19. King Dong   20 years ago

    Which cums first:
    callousness or callouses?

  20. thoreau   20 years ago

There's no problem so intractable that it can't be solved by a little bit of government regulation. I have complete confidence that the Republicans will soon have the porn problem under control.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go smoke something so I can say that with a straight face.

  21. Nathan   20 years ago

Porn hasn't destroyed my life, but it has destroyed a few of my gym socks.

  22. formerly King Dong   20 years ago

    SOCKS!!!??
    I relinquish my crown.

  23. Matt   20 years ago

    Brownback?

Is that like a Rusty Trombone or more like a Cleveland Steamer?

  24. Lewis   20 years ago

The one thing about those christians conservatives is if first you don't succeed, try 20 more times and then bring in the RICO law.

Maybe Sen. Brownback can admend the Patriot Act to include Obsceno-terrorism and blaspho-terrorism.

  25. Dan   20 years ago

Oh wait, we live in the good ol' puritanical US of A.

It could be worse; we could be Canadians.

  26. J   20 years ago

A senate hearing about indecency? Paging the ghost of Frank Zappa....And bring John Denver with you.

  27. metalgrid   20 years ago

It could be worse; we could be Canadians.

One of these days we won't be able to say that.

Never overestimate the average American - average being what you see on Jerry Springer.

  28. martin   20 years ago

    Stevo Darkly:
    Big ROFL !!!
Hell, I still can't see the keyboard, I'm laughing so hard!

  29. Mo   20 years ago

Is Aurora Snow Destroying Your Life?

    I wish she was.

  30. geronimo   20 years ago

Who or what is Aurora Snow?

  31. Mo   20 years ago

    geronimo,
She is a lovely actress that performs in interpretive art. She usually provides interpretations of the act of coitus and the female orgasm. Sometimes she brings another lovely friend to help with her craft.

(Wow, it's kinda fun to make porn sound legit.)

  32. Lowdog   20 years ago

Dan - of course it could be worse, that's not the point I was trying to make. But I'm sure you're aware of that already.

    Yes, callouses, brilliant!

And Nathan, what the fuck about your gym socks?!?

  33. Sarnath   20 years ago

(Wow, it's kinda fun to make porn sound legit.)

That's a pretty good start for some sort of doctoral thesis.

  34. Sarnath   20 years ago

Sounds like a good start for some sort of doctoral thesis. Just imagine the research involved!

  35. Nathan   20 years ago

    Lowdog

Not to be too graphic, but to paraphrase an old Bill Hicks bit (God bless that maniac):

"You think your child is special because one out of 200 million sperm connected? Gee, what are the fuckin' odds? You know what that means? That means I have wiped entire civilizations off my chest with a gray gym sock. I've tossed universes in my underpants. While napping. That is special."

  36. Jason Bourne   20 years ago

Radical feminists and religious conservatives activate! Form of a fascist!

  37. Lowdog   20 years ago

Well gee, Nathan, I coulda guessed I suppose.

But thanks for the visual. 😉

  38. Lowdog   20 years ago

Nathan my man, that is a disturbing visual, but I like it. Thanks for sharing! 😉

  39. geronimo   20 years ago

She is a lovely actress that performs in interpretive art. She usually provides interpretations of the act of coitus and the female orgasm.

    Thank you.

Though how she could ever destroy my life is beyond me. Ruin my dinner, definitely. But destroy my life? Naaah.

  40. X   20 years ago

This analysis of the porn hoopla was funny as hell: http://hammeroftruth.com/2004/11/19/senate-told-porn-as-addictive-as-heroin/

  41. Wild Pegasus   20 years ago

My, but she's a skinny and homely little thing. Her smile is positively Steve Forbesish.

    - Josh

  42. Jason Bourne   20 years ago

Hmm, so when is Rick Santorum going to start jabbering on about gay porn, man on dog porn, etc.? 🙂

  43. Wise Old Fart   20 years ago

You know, people can form addictive/compulsive behaviors around practically anything. As Borok pointed out, some people are addicted to blogs--and talk radio, too. Hell, I know several formerly sane people who have turned rather loony and anti-social from prolonged listening to Rush and "Dr." Laura, or from reading nothing but Atrios and Daily Kos. It's way past time for the government to crack down on these life-destroying blowhards! They're far more dangerous to the polity than any porn starlet could ever be.

  44. Larry A   20 years ago

"Addiction to porn destroying lives, Senate told."

Heaven forfend. Destroying lives is the Senate's job.

  45. Rick Barton   20 years ago

Good one, Larry A. Too true. They might get a little better next session though with, on average, some smaller spenders coming in and bigger spenders departing.

  46. Drooling Richard   20 years ago

"Of course, that would deny a lot of prissy legislators the tough job of looking at all those terrible pictures of SEX!..."

    Amy,

You raise an interesting point about porn. Unlike cocaine or alcohol, there is no objective scientific laboratory test to determine whether or not the substance, porn, is present. The legislators will have to examine the material with their own eyes. Of course the good Senators from Kansas would be outfitted with an erection meter first.

  47. Ruthless   20 years ago

    geronimo,
What kind of out-of-touch savage are you?

    And, "ruin your dinner"?

What if she WERE your "dinner"?

    Have you never licked Santorum?

  48. Senator geronimo Rosybottom   20 years ago

You just got to love that Senator's name - "Brownback."

I am heartened by the fact that an outspoken Christian conservative senator is working hand in hand (so to speak) with a member (so to speak) of the bin Layden family.

Layden called for billboards and bus ads warning people to avoid pornography, strip clubs and prostitutes.

    An effective slogan:

If thine eye offend thee, pluck it out.

Together, the Bushes, the Brownbacks and the bin Laydens are giving new direction to the US.

re: Ruthless's comment: Eww. On all counts. Retro satana! Get thee behind me, Satan!

    (But only if you're cute.)

  49. Graham   20 years ago

Aurora Snow? Im not really into gonzo bukakke.
I watched that show Pornocopia on HBO ( 6 episode series, fridays at 11pm) and I never realized how ugly some of these girls are. I mean I used to think jenna Haze was hot, but half these girls look like Goblins. Still, one day I think I will go to World Modelling and become a male pornstar (sraight mind you)

  50. Jim Walsh   20 years ago

Brownback is such a horses's ass; I can't believe the Republican Liberty Coalition rates him as highly as they do. So much for the RLC...

  51. pdf   20 years ago

Aurora's a lot cuter in person. So's Nikita Denise. Jesse Jane looks like a cartoon goldfish in person, though.

  52. Kerry Voter   20 years ago

Sure, libertarians, whine about it now, when you could have done something about it this month. You voted these psychopath moralistic oxpuckers into office in an unholy reliance with the Dominionist Xians. I hope you enjoy living under the Taliban. Enjoy your tax cuts.

  53. M. Simon   20 years ago

Wag the dick is the Republicans favorite game.

Ed Meese and the pornography commission.

  54. M. Simon   20 years ago

The real fear is man on dogma porn.

    Or women playing with sax.

Wait till they find out Louis Armstrong was blowing a horn.

It is well past time to outlaw 76 trombones.
