The Fat Years
German Finance Minister Hans Eichel says fat people should be taxed more to cover the growing costs of government-funded healthcare. The German Chamber of Doctors agrees that obesity-related illnesses are driving up healthcare spending. But they say Eichel's proposal would be impossible to implement. Instead of taxing people based on their weight, they propose a special tax on foods that contain sugar, animal fats, salt and alcohol.
