Some preliminary fact-checks from last night's tussle can be found at Cheney favorite FactCheck.org, CNN, The Associated Press, The Washington Post, ProgressiveTrail.org (against Bush), and Bush/Cheney '04 (against Senator Kennedy). Please suggest others in the comments, partisan or no. This kind of instantaneous B.S.-detecting is, of course, one of the many welcome benefits of our Information Boom, though not everyone is thrilled.

The NPR show On The Media (http://www.wnyc.org/onthemedia/) purports to do fact-checking on campaign ads at times, and I expect they're doing some of the same with the debates; at the very least, I'm sure they're doing some analysis of the other analyzers.
But for those not familiar with the show, I offer this warning/invitation: if you want to have your stereotypes of NPR as a bunch of smug, elitist liberals reinforced, listen to a few episodes of On The Media. They're pretty painfully partisan at times - not quite Daniel Shore partisan, but not exactly middle of the road either.

Didn't Bush make some sort of reference to Kennedy (when he meant to say Kerry) during the debate?

In one pre-game show I saw, John Kerry was referred to as "Senator Kennedy" and "Al Gore."

On the Media should be more like FOX News Watch... by far the best and least partisan show on Fox News. All they have to do is have an ideologically-balanced panel arguing things out. FOX News Watch has in Jim Pinkerton even something approximating a libertarian.

On the Media's reporters all have clear biases to the left. I used to listen to the show religiously, but it seems to have really spun out of control this election year, and listening doesn't seem to have much purpose now other than hearing the talking points of the Birkenstock crowd. Two of my favorite bits they did: 1) When Bush's poll numbers spiked after the RNC, they felt the need to have a segment on how poll numbers don't really mean anything and how statistically Kerry could still be ahead. Meanwhile for the first time one of the candidates was taking a statistical lead. Curious timing, NPR. 2) The week of the Reagan funeral, they did about 10 segments on how much Reagan sucked, their way of fact-checking the media at the time apparently. Then at the end, they made a 10-second, serious suggestion that maybe he should be on Mt. Rushmore or the $20 bill simply because he was such a towering figure. Didn't seem exactly heartfelt at that particular moment.

Back to the topic at hand, this is the kind of stuff journalists should be doing. In fact, the moderators should do it right during the debate. Just as long as they keep checking facts, and not opinions. For example, if we get Lou Dobbs "correcting" the president on free trade being good, or Sean Hannity "correcting" Kerry on embryonic stem cell research being worthwhile, we're in bad shape.
