Is Flying Fighter Jets a Gateway to Smoking Pot?
H&R reader Thoreau (Not His Real Name) notes that Texas Air National Guard documents released last week included a Joe Fridayesque press release that declared "George Bush is one member of the younger generation who doesn't get his kicks from pot or hashish or speed. Oh, he gets high, all right, but not from narcotics."
The president, of course, has all but admitted using illegal drugs by 1) refusing to discuss the matter while 2) acknowledging that he was once "young and irresponsible" and 3) urging baby boomer role models to lie about their own drug use, saying (in a 1998 Newsweek interview), "I think it's important for leaders, and parents, not to send mixed signals. I don't want some kid saying, 'Well, Governor Bush tried it.'" But maybe it wasn't until after he was suspended from flying that he found a less dangerous and cheaper way to get his kicks.

I am SO disillusioned to find out thoreau is not his real name!! 🙂
I thought thoreau was a woman. Tell me all my fantasizing wasn't in vain.
Sorry, pigwiggle. I've referred to my wife many times on this forum. Unless you had THAT kind of fantasy.... 🙂
Personally, even though I couldn't care less what Bush was doing or not doing or smoking or snorting in the 1970's, I couldn't help but laugh when I saw something referring to him as a model of clean living in the 1970's. I mean, talk about irony! That's why I passed on the article.
No way. Flying a figher jet is a gateway to taking speeed.
Hey, that's a good idea!
Summon the pizz-ipe, minions!!
(...and a fighter jet if we have one of those around here, too)
Thoreau: great pull; very amusing
Sullum: thanx for stepping on the buzz with your tendentious anti-Bush screedism.
Why has Reason gotten so much less amusing?
i worked on F-102`s in the early 60's they have a PRT ( pilot relief tube) in the cockpit that resembles a modern day bong pipe. Maybe he was backwashing through the PRT.
Hydroman, ever know or even hear of one of those jet jockeys walking away from flying? Every one I knew just loved it and would pay good money to keep flying.
I would be curious how many Guard pilots skipped their physicals in 1972.
Why has Reason gotten so much less amusing?
So go shake each other's dicks at NR or something.
Can't please all the people, all the time and all that garbage.

Y'all keep measureing the man with the wrong yardstick and then wonder why he don't fit in the box. He ain't the creature yew imagine. Remove the veil, open your eyes wide and behold a man. Yew ain't seen one of them before, have ya?
Bushie, did you mean to sound like Old Wizard Whateley from "The Dunwich Horror"?
"He ain't the creature yew imagine" indeed!
According to the Kitty Kelly book, George Senior was doing some serious skirt chasing the whole family was aware of.
Has anyone alligned day-by-day diaries/ accounts to see if Dubya could have been despondent over troubles on his home front?
Was he deeply disappointed he wasn't accepted into the law school of his choice?
Why didn't he take the steenking physical?
Oh, God, Ruthless, I was just starting to take you (somewhat) seriously, then you mention Kitty Kelly's book! Actually, wait... wait...
You don't want to be taken seriously! Silly me.
According to Kitty Kelley...
Might be a good way to start a work of fiction, I suppose.
Frankly, I don't want a president who never took a toke, never had nasty illicit sex, or one who is a 'true believer'. 🙂
Is Flying Fighter Jets a Gateway to Smoking Pot?
No, it is a gateway to methamphetamine.
As some people have hinted, every commercial and military cockpit in the country is equiped with amphetamine in order to fight sleepiness (not an FDA approved use, by the way). Speed and downers ("go" and "no-go") are also supposedly given before and after most extended military bombing runs.
It's comforting to know that those people spraying weed killer on foreign opium and coca fields are more hopped up than anyone down below.
Bush and the Republicans are about Values (by V values). No drugs, no pre-marital sex. Just send the kiddies off to war (kill or be killed).
Good old American Values.
And they keep getting elected???

I believe the stories about Bush's drug use have been around for years. True, false or exagerrated I haven't a clue. Also we know we was a big boozer and quit 18 years ago. Yup, the finger points to him being a fuck up in his younger days. All would be fine with me except that Bush is definiely plugged into the born-again family values thing which has no tolerence for such behavior......I'm getting a big whiff of hypocracy here. Unfortunately the American public likes to think it's leaders have backgrounds like Snow White (actually she is the coke dealer in my hood)....which serves the purpose of mental comfort food. When it comes to politicians having something less than a pristine background I have trouble deciding where to focus my annoyance...because the whole mindset of the politician is the product of the larger society.
If all this guy did was a line of coke I wouldn't care, either. It is the sum total of this guy's background, drunk and sober, that paints a picture of a privileged, arrogant hypocrite who's been given a free ride because of his last name.
