It's (Yawn) Edwards
In another sign that this presidential race will be conventional and boring whenever it actually gets underway, John Kerry has picked John Edwards as his running mate. Here's the AP report.
And, courtesy of the Republican National Committee (and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette), here's an embarrassing statement from Kerry's stepson:
"I was very pro-[North Carolina Sen. John] Edwards in the spring … But now I think we may need someone with stronger credentials on foreign policy."
That story is here.

Edwards has to be the best choice...I was kinda HOPING he would pick someone else.
I hate that smarmy, mealy-mouthed little pissant.
A while back some blogger wrote that Edwards reminded him of Uriah Heep. That captures it perfectly.
As for my alternative, I don't have one. It's telling that of all the Democratic primary candidates, the only one I find remotely likeable is Al Sharpton--and he's a total slimeball.
That being said, I'll probably vote Kerry if it looks close enough in Arkansas. The Bush gang scare the shit out of me.
(Yawn)
Really, I'm going back to sleep.
Looking at old footage on TV of these guys flashing their toothy grins at each other, I get the feeling that they hate each other. This campaign is shaping up to have all the sincerity and camaraderie of a Fleetwood Mac reunion.
So who should Kerry have chosen? Edwards seems like the best choice all around. (Charismatic, young, Southerner, has some name recognition from the primaries, career as a trial lawyer will probably let him top Cheney in the VP debates, etc.) Of course, Kerry will *still* lose, but this might help hold Bush's margin of victory under 5%.
It is sad that, in an era when the Republicans don't even attempt to mask their contempt for civil liberties or give some remotely rational explanation for their actions, that this is the best the Dems can come up with. Every blogger and poster seems to have no problem spotting the glut of obvious flaws and false pretenses wielded by the current administration, this should be a slam-dunk.
Nope. Apparently adherence to facts is anathema to most Dems. Liberals used to make the corrupt and hopeless landscape of 2 party politics fun, but they can't even muster that anymore.
I think Clark might have been a smarter pick. I was thinking he would pick Vilsack.
Jeff wrote: "It is sad that . . . this is the best the Dems can come up with."
And I repeat: Who should Kerry have chosen?
(I have no love for Kerry, and I have no plan to vote for him, but I'm really tired of this trend towards sneering at someone else's decision on a matter without explaining what the better choice was.)
ADDENDUM: The parenthetical above is directed at the public in general and is not intended as an ad hominem attack on Jeff.
Sorry, I was still typing my rant when Dave posted.
Evan Bayh has the potential to be a potent Dem candidate. He speaks well, has a face for TV, and polls very well in the midwest.
I kinda thought this might be an opportunity to groom him.
Bayh wasn't going to be palatable to Democratic interest groups. Edwards is.
The pick was a lot about boosting black turnout in the fall (Edwards is pretty good at that), making some additional Southern and border states competitive for the Dems (he speaks the language), and infusing some charisma into a boring Kerry campaign. Works on those levels. It also helps the Democratic campaign to retake the Senate by shoring up five Democrat-held seats in the South.
Edwards is somewhat more hawkish than Kerry, by the way, so those who think the ticket will win to the extent it runs against the war in Iraq are likely to be disappointed.
He should have picked Mary Landrieu, merely because she's kinda cute. 🙂
John Hood:
I can see that, but I kind of had this idea that the ultimate form that NotBush would take would be nostalgia for Clinton. I think Bayh gets them Clintonite centrist cred if that is where they were going to go.
What would concern me if I were a Dem is that the apparent idea is to let Kerry stand on his own.
John, very insightful about the Senate. Evidence of how optimistic the Dems have become, and this in a year that, because of retirements, is especially tilted against them.
Jack: I agree with you. The answer to your question is "nobody." There isn't a Dem with a decent speaking voice and passable stage presence capable of taking even broad shots at the OBVIOUS target the GOP has held up.
I'm not criticizing the choice, just pointing out that a generation of liberals pretending reality doesn't exist and preaching rampant bullshit have made themselves impotent.
The one thing that I'll remember this era for: After shrieking that Reagan, Bush Sr, Gingrich were totalitarian theocratic madmen (and actually putting up a good fight) "Liberalism" becomes ineffectual when faced with a REAL totalitarian theocratic madman.
So Sleepy picked Dopey as his running mate? The only question is what will the reporters and pundits on the presidential election beat obsess over to relieve their boredom now that the veep pick is done?
"I was very pro-Edwards in the spring ... But now I think we may need someone with stronger credentials on foreign policy."
Yeah, because if we get someone in there with out enough foreign policy experiance, they might start a needless war or something...
Of course, Kerry and Edwards both sport such extreme big spending, big government voting records and new advocacies, that they can make even Bush look good!...but alas, we don't have to waste our votes for president on any of those power mad folks.
We have someone who loves liberty and has an appropriate reverence for our constitution that we may vote for! http://www.badnarik.org/
The GOP congress did the American people a great service when in put the clamps on Clinton's expansive (and expensive) agenda. A very encouraging development now is that many Republicans in congress are coming to the realization that they will have to do the same with Bush.
It's depressing that in many aspects, there is just not much difference in the agendas of Kerry and Bush. The same is NOT true of the GOP and Dems in congress though. The Dems tend to vote for much bigger government. And, ALL of the most frugal members are Republicans. Check it out and verify at the non-partisan: http://www.ntu.org/main/
The NTU is on the side of liberty.
Kerry could have surprised everyone with any pick that wasn't Edwards or Gephardt. Even if he picked his own Dan Quayle, he'd have sent a message that his candidacy wouldn't be business as usual.
Jacques Chirac.
A proven vote buyer! Edwards is an ultra big spender. He consistently earns "F"s from the NTU for his loose with the purse ways.

HERE IS SOMETHING WE CAN DO TO WORK FOR SMALLER GOVERNMENT IN THE ELECTION:
Even though the GOP members and candidates for congress tend to be for much less government then their Dem counterparts, not ALL of them are worth voting for. Some are RINOS, and might as well be Dems.
Today I received a letter from "The Club For Growth", a group that helps elect candidates who support economic growth through limited government and lower taxes. It fights both the Dems and the RINOS. http://www.clubforgrowth.org/ 1-800-687-2582
It's now free to join! You just have to consider contributing $50 or more to at least two Club for Growth recommended candidates.
