The first (as far as I know) mobile phone virus—benign so far—has been released by "an international group specialising in creating viruses which try to show 'that no technology is reliable and safe from their attacks'." It apparently spreads via bluetooth.

Sheesh, now we'll all have to sign up our phones for a "do not infect" list.

Oh, man, it was bad enough for Jack Bauer when LA was threatened by a virus that causes severe hemorhaging. But if LA is threatened by a cell phone virus, that will REALLY ruin his day! 🙂

Of course, like most of the latest viruses, the vulnerability exploited is in the stupid user module.

    http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/cabir.shtml

Cabir replicates over bluetooth connections and arrives to phone messaging inbox as caribe.sis file what contains the worm. When user clicks the caribe.sis and chooses to install the SIS file the worm activates and starts looking for new devices to infect over bluetooth.

Please note that Caribe worm can reach only mobile phones that support bluetooth, have bluetooth switched on, and are in discoverable mode.

The virus doesn't spread automatically. To infect your phone, you would have to accept a connection, assent to a data transfer, and agree to install the virus. In other words, you'd have to be the kind of fool who executes strange email attachments. It's not like a new security hole has been discovered in cellular phone software.

So there's an international group that has nothing better to do but screw with people. Let's start another international group that captures these people and locks them up for long periods of time.

It wasn't released, it was emailed to Symantec - significant difference

    It apparently spreads via bluetooth.
