Via Defensetech comes news of artist Steve Kurtz, whose biotech-themed pieces have won wide acclaim. When his wife died suddenly of heart failures, police officers called to the scene were suspicious of his equipment: Kurtz found himself not only a widower, but the subject of a counterterrorism investigation.

Bunsen burners, petri dishes and test tubes are grounds for arrest now? I'm glad these laws weren't in place back when I played with my childhood chemistry set.

So you are admitting you've had terrorist tendencies since childhood. Stay where you are; a responder will be with you shortly.

If you're not an artist, you have nothing to fear.

As P.J. O'Rourke pointed out "Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys."

Much like the Iraq military prison scandal, this should lead to terminations of those responsible. Only fearing for their careers will keep these jack-booted thugs in check.

If police found test tubes and Bunsen burners in my neighbor's home I hope there would be an investigation.

<Wait! Wait!> On the order of:

"Sir, what do you do with this chemistry equipment?"

"I use it in my art."

"Please tell me about your art."

"Well, in this room are a couple of examples you can look at, and it's being shown in this museum and that art gallery."

"Cool. Sir, can we be of further assistance?"

How to sum this up eloquently and with precision? Ah yes: fucking bullshit.
